I like you ! This exchange of ideas was incredible, I live in the city of são Paulo, but Brasil is incredible different from north to South, I hope your experiences here in Brasil were good.
My 1st trip to Brazil is this coming in March , My first stop is Salvador Bahia i will be staying there for 2 months ,Then on to staying in Rio for 2 months For My last 2 months i will stay in Sao Paulo , While i am in Sao Paulo for the last of my Visa i will Fly to see Manaus for a week My trip date can't come fast enough. I have been learning Brazilian Portuguese with a tutor for the past 5 months trying to prepare for traveling in the areas where The languages i can speak comfortably are English ,Spanish or German speakers will be difficault to find .
Nice plan ! I speak bare minimum Portuguese and everything is Hakuna matata lol. You’ll find some English and especially they will understand Spanish in the places you are going

When any non Brazilian thinks of carnival they think of Rio lol. Or Salvador if they know a little more. I’ve lived in Brasil for close to a year. In the south. Middle. And now north east. I had never heard of Olinda carnival until I came to the north.

But isnt fortaleza really dangerous??? I plan to move to Brazil soon and I'm planning to get married to a Brazilian girl, but I think it's quote unquote undiscovered because it's much harder to even visit there now. You need a visa and the language is different and in order to do anything you need a cpf number. There is a big learning curve even just a visit. It's not like Medellin

First let be realistic not about what he saying about the people and cost except. Airbnb your going to get luck to get one bedroom apartment for at least $650 dollars. So saying $500 dollars is a joke. Try $1,000 dollars as a good life if you want to be a player $2,000 dollar a month. That if you don’t have a $1,000 a month Airbnb. This is in Fortaleza
ALL of the northeast is NOT the same, you have to be specific. SALVADOR gets a lot of tourism but it's not the safest city, beaches aren't very good in town. Very active and friendly place MACEIO has the prettiest beaches in Brasil, they look like the Bahamas. Also has a lot of decent restaurants. Not much going on there otherwise, mostly safe on the beach RECIFE is very mixed. Is mostly safe but has bad areas too away from the beach. Some areas are very ugly near downtown and the airport. BoaVista Mall area is great for cheap food. Has many excellent cheap and expensive restaurants of all kinds, more than many other cities. You have very rich and dirt poor living next to each other. I remember seeing a bright yellow Porsche 911 in the beach area and another guy digging through the trash in front of him. The rich are the most arrogant priks you will ever meet even towards Americans. Lived there for years JOAO PESSOA is one of the best cities in Brasil. lived there for 3 years. Mostly very safe, nice beaches, good restaurants. I'd say it's #2 city in Br NATAL and FORTALEZA have nice beaches but highly dangerous. Your guys didn't mention why. Some years ago a major drug lord who was in prison in the south of BR Porto Alegre was transferred to a prison in Fortaleza. All of his crimminal drug gang buddies followed. Ever since both cities have been dangerous. I met a retired Army guy in Recife who left Natal beacuse it was too unsafe - car jacking, gun robberies etc. Let me comment about the south; CURITIBA, FLORIANOPOLIS -#1 city in Br, JOINVILLE. The south is like living in Europe, founded by Germans, Italians and eastern Europeans. Lot of great cities. VERY safe any time of day. You will find more people down here that speak english than any other city in BR. They are very friendly too especially towards Americans. The beaches never get warm enough for ME to swim in the south and has a cool winter, some areas get some snow. BIG negative for me ONE MORE THING - PORTO ALEGRE IS VERY DANGEROUS, they have a gun mentality there, lots of drug dealers. My BR friend was shot and killed by robbers as he was coming home. Thousands of people in Florianopolis left Porto Alegre to live here, my building is full of them. The people in the outlying areas ; Novo Petropolis, Caixas do Sul, Gramado, Garibaldi, Bento Goncalves, Canela are very nice and these towns are safe. Lot of wineries #1 city in Br, The trade offs are that you will have tons more friends in places like Florianopolis mostly because more speak english and the population is highly educated but not arrogant. My problem is the cold water on all the beaches, unless you are from Argentina, you can't swim in it. The other thing is that the restaurants suck. They mainly live on pizza, the churrascos r$80 PP ($30) are 2X more expensive than the north and not as good. The meats they serve are tough garbage and horrible. Very few por kilo or chinese restaurants. THE NORTH on the other hand you'll have a lot less friends because you really don't have much in common with them and they don't speak english The beaches are wonderful and the water is HOT, you can go swimming all year. Great area for boating too. BUT you will find 10X cheaper and better restaurants in cities like Recife that the south does not have. You can do churrasco for r$49 ($10)PP or get a large plate of Yaksoba for r$15 ($3), coxinhas $1, Pastels $1
He was on point on a lot of things, but 200 bucks is pretty hard, even for a poor Brazilian. Also, 2k a month is already balling, living like a king. 5k is next level shit.
200 was a little iffy to me too. but dude has lived a long time in the NE. plus is very connected with the favelas. and I know for a fact, many people in the favelas live on less then 300 a month. of course, a gringo, it would be impossible. 2k a month is not balling amigo (subjective). spent last 5 months in JP. visited 15ish properties (to buy). if you airbnb, for sure spending 1000 a month for a ballin spot. 1k for food, activities, shopping, is not as much as you think anymore in brasil. personally, even without having to pay for housing, I was spending around 2k a month. but was living and doing whatever i wanted whenever. but even that, i was shopping maybe once a week for clothes, etc. I think 3 / 3.5 k in 2023 in the NE is the sweet spot. after that, it doesn't really matter anymore besides buying luxury items

Just so you have an idea: My place, a furnished 2-bed, 2-bath on the 19th floor with beach views, costs $540 a month, inclusive of bills, even fast speed internet. The building offers amenities like a gym, pool, and a 24-hour doorman. I spend $200-$250 monthly on groceries and $200-$300 (3 meals a day) on dining out (15 + times a month) and I’m not talking about Prato Feitos. My energy bill stays under $40, despite having recording equipment/studio at the crib. I take monthly trips to beach towns ($150-$250 each). Weekly outings cost $200-$300. I spend $22 on Netflix/Spotify, $100 on miscellaneous items, $60 on gas for my car, and $150 on health insurance. I travel within Brazil four times a year, once a year internationally, because I live part-time in Medellin, Colombia. I spend around 1400 to 2000 a month. Also, this is for both my girl and I. I kinda consider that ballin’. lol. The fact the I live here makes life cheaper when compared to a tourist.

Its a shame & embarrassing that Brazil is infested with high crime rate corruption & poverty in spite of being an oil producing country (Petrobras) & so rich in natural resources they say Philippines is a poor corrupt country but Manila's slums pale in comparison to Rio's immense favelas
