The food of northern China is comfort food at its finest-greasy, salty, and very hearty.
Dishes include deep-fried dough sticks, pork buns, and noodles with fermented bean paste. But why is the food so heavy? One of the reasons is the weather.
This is the 11th episode of our 13-part series on Chinese food called Eat China. In the next episode, we’ll go on a food tour of Beijing and hit up three restaurants you have to try.

Clarissa, you and the Goldthread team tell a tale of China, its history and people that is easy on the ears. Your collective resources and knowledge is astounding given the immensity of China. A feature on how you pull it off logistically and financially might help boost your support. Best wishes.

It's interesting that she doesn't use standard Mandarin pronunciation since she does not have an accent. She drops the h so shan becomes San a lot of people talk like that but I just found it surprising.

I guess she’s from southern china. It’s a little curious to see northeastern dishes being pronounced without the mandatory hard “sh/ch” and erhua typical of northern Chinese accent though.

Always wondered about the diet from these Chinese from the northern provinces of China because when I see these Chinese visit the USA these Chinese seem to have more tall height people then us white Americans and on average taller then us white Americans. Read comments from Americans and Europeans as well saying that when they visited regions in northern China saying that they felt shorter there then in their own country because of all the tall people that they have seen in northern China. Read comments from Chinese that visited Europe saying that they feel taller in Europe then back at home in China with the exception of the Netherlands and some other regions in Europe like in the Scandinavians countries and in northern regions of Germany. A majority of Europe is noticeably shorter on average then the Netherlands, the Scandinavian countries and the northern regions of Germany. The northern Chinese will notice White Americans for the most part are shorter then the Chinese as well. White American men have 6'0" men but most of us are under 5'10" and 5'7" or shorter white American men aren't that rare but fairly common so therefore us white Americans are short when compared to you northern Chinese by a very noticeable difference. Funny because the Asians in Chinatown Philadelphia are noticeably shorter on average then white Americans but these Chinese aren't Han but other ethnic minorities like the Hmong and many Asians living in Chinatown Philadelphia aren't even Chinese but from southeast Asia or the pacific Island.

ive heard that plastic pollution has contaminated the sea salt supplies. obviously it depends where the salt(s) were harvested, but i think globally the quality has tapered off, unfortunately. the good news is mined salts pretty much remain the same and kind of are ancient sea salts, though really thats like saying barrels of oil are vegan...true but pretty far from practically meaning anything

there are several things you should not consume. the first is black bean sauce, the second is noodles because it is heavy on wheat, or gluten. the third is duck, you should not consume meat like that. Maybe a steak once in a while.
