One BIG problem with a Russian attack on Svalbard - especially by sea, is that the Russian Northern Fleet is based in Murmansk..... a city that is supplied by only ONE ROAD. The ONLY way to reach there is a single road that is within EASY striking distance of Finland, which, of course, is now a NATO ally, and, along with Sweden and Norway, have been allied together as part of the Nordic Defence Cooperation. Between the 3 countries, Russia would have an EXTREMELY difficult time.
@TheMalcolmPowder
@TheMalcolmPowder 4 месяца назад
That single road supplying Murmansk is likely why more Arctic military bases are being re-equipped, re-opened afresh, and also why there is the expansion of an ice-breaker fleet, to improve that logistic. Russia obviously wants to control the Arctic region. Remember also, the Arctic, as a region, while still vast, is much smaller than maps suggest, so distances from those other military bases to Svalbard and everywhere in the Arctic, are less.

Invading Norway from the north is very difficult. Tanks go well on Finmarksvidda, but after that there are mountains and more mountains with lots of bridges. There are no railways in the north. You have to go all the way down to roughly the middle of Norway to find railway tracks. If the Russians were to attack Norway, I would probably think that they would attack us with missiles. Invading with infantry is unlikely because that would probably have been suicide. Bridges will be blown up and it would be very easy to take out columns of infantry when there is only one main road.

They might have the bigger number, but even the Germans found out during WW2 how difficult Norway was to hold. The topography can remind you of Afghanistan. There's a lot of mountains, valleys, caves etc etc which makes it perfect for guerrilla warfare for someone who knows the terrain. There are a lot of choke points where the Norwegian Army already have plans in place to blow up bridges etc should such a scenario happen. Many bridges in Norway, especially in the north, are constructed with small hollowed out rooms for explosives in certain designated places. Besides, as a NATO nation they wouldn't have stood a chance anyway.

The fact that Norway flipped the table in ww2 to the matter of its hard to hold, over to, its hard to flee, as 500.000 germans or so were trapped in Norway so they could not bolster the eastern front. Comparing Norway to Afghanistan is an understatemen. Afghanistan is more hilly than mountainous compared to Norways over 50% landmass being over 60% curvature. And crossing a fjord is much harder than crossing a wide river. Russia would struggle to get far simply due to most of the northern roads are connected by ferries, so just stopping them would halt their entire advance.

....and when and what, during WW2, did the Germans find out "how difficult Norway was to hold". It seem like you have ideas of history that no one else have heard about.... With the two single exceptions of Narvik (April to June 1940) ....where they were vastly outnumbered in men and materiel.... they lost Narvik but than given back the control after a few days when the allied forces left and Norway capitulated.... ....then at the end of 1944 (October) where the Soviet Army pushed the Germans out of Kirkenes / Varanger. So the reality is that the Germans was not much challenged during their 5 years of occupation of Norway.....and did not find out anything of how "hard" it was...... @@oblivionnokk3531 The only thing which is hard here is to figure out where you have you "info" from. There were never 500 000 German soldiers standing in Norway.... the normal estimate is of around 400 000. Your story about that the German troops tried "to flee" Norway ...and were "trapped" ....would be a new one for historians. Until the very few last weeks before Germany's fall there were nothing that "trapped" them or blocked them from "fleeing" from Norway. You also say that the German soldiers standing in Norway were prevented from "bolstering the eastern front." Again you have your own version of history. The reality was that the majority of the Germans standing in Norway came from the eastern front. They had been there fighting since the summer of 1941. You must be aware of that the eastern front was much more than the front in central-Europe. That same front stretched all the way north into the Arctic to the Barent's sea. The two areas the Germans were stationed were the Murmansk / Litsa front and the other one was together with the Finns on the Karelia front. Kirkenes was a base for around 160 000 Germans who tried to take Murmansk ....which was Soviet union's only ice free port of highest importance due to all the supplies they got on ships from the allied. Without the port and the supplies the outcome of WW2 would have been different. Hence it was very much a part of "the east front". People in Kirkenes very much experienced that they lived at the front since it was the most bombed place in Europe....only after Malta.... Just in order to survive they lived in the maze of tunnels at the iron ore mine at nearby Bjørnevatn. Finland had not been invaded by Germans but they had invited them to join them in order to take land inside Soviet ....but when the Finns, in the latter part of the war, saw that the Germans were on the losing end they asked the around 200 000 German troops to leave Finland ....and the eastern front.... and many of them ended up in Norway. Another reason for many German soldiers were standing in Norway (not trapped) were the ever so often random bombing (done by the Brits) along the coast of Norway in order to make the Germans to believe that an allied invasion into Norway could happen at any time. Strategically was Norway important for control of the North Atlantic and the control of the iron ore shipped out from Narvik. Hence there had to be a significant presents of German troops in Norway....which has nothing with being "trapped". Your ideas of how difficult it is to invade Norway....didn't work out during WW2....so it is only in theory it will work. You base your theory on that the Norwegian military is "much more prepared...." nowadays... To be better prepared than in 1940 should not be difficult ...since it was close to zero. The reality is that the Norwegian military is still not well prepared ....that's why the budget has been significantly increased in order to be better prepared at some point in the future... Finally you need some help with geography. What you call "northern roads are connected with ferries". Well....there are only one north-south road connecting northern Norway....it's named E6....and there are only one ferry ....

More brigades will be established, which means more soldiers. More air defense around the country, more tanks, new submarines coming. Kongsberg and Nammo factories producing weapon systems, missiles and ammo around the clock, even though some of this will be sent to Ukraine. Yeah go ahead and try to attack our Nordic brothers. Finland surely has nothing to say about it. Especially since all the attacking forces and logistics have to pass through a single road, on a narrow and long slice of Russian land, vulnerable to artillery from the Finnish side of the border. Surely the attacking force, and the Russian naval base won't be cut off by Finnish artillery, guerillas, and anti-vehicle mines spread all over that single road they would need to use. And we all know Russia's navy is the biggest embarrassment known to man, in the history of human naval forces. There is just no way Russia could escalate a conflict with Norway, and come out on top.

Seems like sensationalistic clickbait. Yes, the northern areas are strategically important and will be even more important with a more open Arctic ocean. No, Russia is very likely not preparing for a massive war with Norway. I am sure they have plans and have worked on scenarios, which they probably have for all their neighbors. But their military is tied up in Ukraine for the foreseeable future. And it would be suicide for Russia to try anything like that since Norway, Sweden, and Finland all are NATO members. The ONLY exception I can see is that Russia MAY try something on a small scale in Svalbard to see how NATO responds, and then either pull out quickly (if NATO takes action) or continue to see how far they can go before NATO takes action.
@MsSquirl00
@MsSquirl00 4 месяца назад
Its not clickbait. Everyone thought the same thing with Ukraine and look how that turned out. Only saving face for Ruzzia was that Ukraine is not NATO. Yet ... As always, Ruzzia will push the envelope as far as they can get, putting in place any and many strategic plans. Am sure Putler is waiting for the results of US elections this fall to determine how he proceeds further. He might test the waters at some point to measure NATO responses. If his propaganda machine is again effective in getting trump back in, trump WILL pull out of NATO and most likely side with Ruzzia. At that point, Ruzzia will have little fear of NATO.

Or you can take ships and boats for transport, but due to drone warfare and missiles, ships are terrible. And small boats can easily be sunk from hidden terrain. and the freezing water isnt nice to swim in. The conquer part is incredibly hard, and thats ignoring LOGISTICS which is a whole other hell hole. Even if they did capture, nobody here is really pro-Russian, norway enjoys freedom. Their point is to get away with as much as possible in secret and when caught, to cry wolf for their benefit. Of course BLAMING NATO/West. There is no logical reason for Russia to invade Svalbard if the motive was the natural resources. First of all we don't know if there are large amounts of oil and gas there. But we know the the russians have found large amounts of gas in the same region. However these resources have been too difficult the extract because of the harsh environments. Besides that, the time window for fossile fuels is running out. The most important natural resourses on Svalbard is the fishing resource on the ocean around the islands. And it has an important strategic location for NATO. This means that NATO will never accept that Russia takes control over Svalbard.

This solves the huge logistics problem we previously had since there were som major choking points on the rail and road network in northern Norway. Now Scandinavia are practical speaking one country when it comes to defence and a attack with any significant results are almost impossible. Russia may be able to take parts of land close to its borders, but they will not be able to hold it so what is the point? Russia doesn’t need to invade Norway, they only need to make sure Svalbard don't have any military bases. There is no trust between those arctic neighbors in these days and we may go back to the old days whEn gunpower can have some sense of argument....

Lived in Donbass watched the gas war to unfold. 10 years later nobody even knows why it started. Everyone is too deep in russian gas money. Germany is bright example.

If Russia threatens the peaceful people of Norway, they will see a very swift & over whelming response from NATO, period. Their broken ass military would experience a an utter feeling of inferiority.

Fighting that far north of the Arctic Circle would be really difficult. BTW, there is nothing, natural resource wise, that Russia already has in spades so a war over these resources doesn’t make sense. PS - Talking points in Russia doesn’t equate to a war.

It can also make sense to attack for resources you've already got, to guarantee access to a larger share of the world market, for pricegouging reasons.

One thing is not mentioned, but is why NATO would react, is that Kongsberg Gruppen, who produce alot of things, NATO war machines use in Air, Land and Sea, is directly connected to Svalbard, and that satelite station, they would not want to end up in Russian hands.

One note, Norwegians do not take it kindly if any nation invades them.. They are still very angry at how Nazi germany dared invade them in 1940. They have not forgot how Sweden tried to invade them in 1800 century, and still have a little grudge to Denmark that they actually ruled over them (but on their conditions) up to 1814. So even without NATO it would be a very bad idea for Russia, and US would not take it kindly with a Russian occupation of Svalbard as it would be seen as a direct threat to US security. So, no, will not happen.

FYI, for all, I did a bit of Googling a while back about Incogni and discovered that Delete Me is better but slightly more pricey. However it specifically looks for your data first, instead of just sending out blanket remove request to all data brokers, even if they don't have your data _yet..._ (but now do thanks to Incogni's request). However, if you're outside America, Delete Me's even better, as it's got versions for a bunch of different individual countries. I'm Australian and looked at Incogni as it was being advertised everywhere, but it's not that good with our local laws. Google your own country and data broker removal. Then, decide for yourself.
