Bob decides that the best way to eliminate poverty is by just giving everyone more money. If the government prints more currency, then everyone will be rich, right?

There's an urban legend about how a man in 1920s Germany took a wheelbarrow full of cash to the bank to make a deposit. Left the wheelbarrow outside the bank while he went inside to fetch a teller. When he came back the wheelbarrow was gone... But the pile of cash was still there.

The best explaination I've seen about inflation is from the cartoon show Clarence with the one episode where the whole school got obsessessed with "Clarence dollars", using it as their own currency to exchange stuff like food and toys and even fighting over it. They fixed this problem by printing so many more "Clarence dollars" and gave it to everyone. Having everyone have so many Clarence dollars, it actually felt very worthless to them and they can't exchange it for sh1t anymore because the kids wanting to sell stuff can't accept more Clarence dollars because they already have so many. They all instantly gave up on the Clarence dollars and went back to normal. And the best part about this is that the Clarence dollars are pretty much just paper with drawings on it that is practically worthless, just like actual currency.
@hippopilot6750
@hippopilot6750 Год назад
That was a good show. I was put off at first due to the art but it really did some neat stuff. Another funnily educational show is teen titans go, they had dedicated episodes on being a landlord and rent, the gold standard and other oddly specific dealings.

@@MalekitGJ So damned if we do and damned if we don't? Hmm. Paper currency is bad because of its inflationary tendency, but currency in the form of precious metals is bad because it's hard to transport. If only there was a way to guarantee the value of the paper currency so that you could have both an easy to transport currency and it be resistant to inflation. Then everyone would benefit. Except for the people who print the stuff but they can hang. Maybe, just maybe, a paper currency could be backed by gold. We could call it the Gixon. Gold Nixon. Wait. No. Nixon sounds like the name of someone who would make a really dumb decision; like stealing tapes or ruining a currency. Oh! I know. The Gollard. Gold. Dollar. Gollard.

Stephan Stefanus Actually the Nazis didn’t really get rich they basically just exited a depression along the end gate of it and started seizing and milking every non-party system for that effect: see in 1933 when hitler disbanded all non-Nazi charities and in 1934 when he seized wage controls and labor as well as having to have licenses to buy anything We can see this come back to bite them in the ass a bit later as the men power they sacrificed for the war didn’t equal that of which they locked at labor camps and the seizure of property in other lands This is shown in more detail in meim kamf as hitler believed the zero sum Fallacy and said Germany needed more soil for agriculture... so whenever he took over didn’t need any industry unless it was for the war Also as for food the Nazis prioritized their people over others and in meim kamf hitler stayed everyone else would starve before germany did... guess who’s willing to sell anything of high value for breakfast when starving? As for earlier years it basically had a bounce back and everyone was kinda tense about Hitler’s Germany: so even if Germany did get stable it was Hitler’s economic fallacies and the end of days prophecies he beloved in that forced him to go to war and expand Germany

Need we bring up Hungary where hyperinflation was so out of hand that they had over a 200% DAILY hyperinflation rate. As Business Insider said about it, something that cost 379 Pengo, their currency, in September of 1945 would cost 1 trillion trillion Pengo by July 22, 1946. That’s a 1 followed by 18 zeroes, an inflation rate of 2.638 QUADRILLION PERCENT! This is why you don’t print money en masse. Hungary ruined the currency in a single year.

Most companies already give their own employees as much as they can, increasing the cost of labor only means more people go unemployed as companies can't afford to keep them, putting them in a scenario worse than before. It was a quiet night in Pennsylvania. Pitch black sky, covered in many shining stars stood stoically above the small highway that led from the small towns on the outskirts of Pittsburgh to the main city. The highway was almost completely empty, with no car to ride on it, for it was already a late hour. Except for one small orange family car. It was driven by Ron. He was accompanied by his beautiful wife Sarah, and in the backseat, their good friend Bob babysat their six-months old child. Ron and Sarah went out to the movies that day, and they paid Ron's college roommate Bob to take care of their baby while they are in the theatre. "Bob, are you watching the baby?", asked Sarah, unsure about Bob's professionality. She believed that Bob was a lazy person who couldn't do his job right; hence she was worried. "Of course", replied Bob, feeling a bit insulted. "That's what you're paying me for." Sarah's baby was oddly curious for their young age. By some miracle, they could speak semi-coherent sentences and already showed interest in the great, weird world around them. They were interested in why Bob is being "paid" for taking care of them; even though they didn't know what is the use of those funny papers everyone calls "money". They never saw a true transaction before. "Mama, dada", they asked their parents. "Why Bob need money?" Ron, slightly tired and frustrated because of the long way home, replied kind of laconically, while also remembering his time at college with Bob: "Because Bob never acquired marketable skills and money doesn't grow on trees." "You majored in performing arts, Ron!", exclaimed Bob, once again insulted by Ron's bashing of him. The baby has now realized that people need money to survive, but yet, they were still too young to realize that money had to be earned. For them, money was just a funny paper that people need and can be given. "Why not just print more money? Then Bob can have some more.", the baby said. Ron's eyes were closing of need to sleep. He tried desperately to focus on the road, so his family can get safely to their home. It would be hard for even a fully awake and energized man to see in front of the car; it was dim moon and their headlights were the only source of light. But then, his tired eyes quickly opened wide, as he saw something that truly horrified him. His good friend Seamus, whom he also met in college, suddenly appeared. He was highly interested in computer animation and economics, and identified as a libertarian. It would usually be funny when Bob would fail at understanding economics, and Seamus would appear out of nowhere. But now, it was not fun at all. He stood right in the middle of the road, not realizing he is in deadly danger. "Actually...", Seamus began speaking, peacefully like he was talking in a park. Ron was sweating profoundly, and he suddenly steered the wheel and pressed the brake furiously so he would not hit Seamus. Everyone in the car screamed terrified. But it was already too late. Seamus was hit by the car, and the car steered too far left and hit the fence. ... Bob woke up a minute later. His entire world was upside down. The car hit the fence so hard it flipped and landed on its roof. Shards of broken glass were lying around everywhere. "Jesus Christ...", Bob exclaimed while rubbing his painful head. When he pulled his hand back, he found blood and a piece of glass on it; several glass shards must have hit him in the bed. His pupils widened, as he questioned himself: "Is the baby okay?" He turned to the baby, terrified of the worst, only to find out that it was only bruised and crying. Ron and Sarah, on the other hand, unfortunately, died. There already was no hope for them. "Oh God...", screamed Bob, as he picked up the baby from the children's seat and went out of the car. The smell of smoke and gasoline indicated that the car is on fire; they had to escape the car if they were to survive. "Don't worry", Bob settled the baby. "Everything is okay." Bob walked out of the car, baby in hand. Now the baby was settled, but Bob wasn't. He fully understood the weight of the situation. Then he took out the phone and called 911, reporting a car accident on the highway from Philadeplhia to Saint Louis. An ambulance and a firefighter team were on their way to the place. Bob tried to walk in circles, hoping that that would ease his mind. Then he heard a familiar voice whisper: "Bob..." "Seamus!", Bob exclaimed in anger. He ran towards Seamus, who was lying immobile on the ground. Tire marks were visible on him and he had several hard injuries. He still was strong enough to talk to Bob, though. Bob was furious at him. He blamed him for the accident that happened. "Seamus! Do you have any idea what you have done?" "Calm down, Bob", whispered Seamus with a weak voice. "CALM DOWN?", screamed Bob, now truly furious at Seamus. "If it wasn't for you, Seamus, we would all go home and continue with our lives! But no, Seamus, you just had to appear out of nowhere to give us one more of your pointless economic lectures noone cares about. And you just HAD to appear in the middle of a highway! Do you realize that because of you and your selfish need to teach us about economic, Sarah and Ron are fucking dead, and this baby right here is now a fucking orphan? DO YOU UNDERSTAND, SEAMUS? THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!" "Actually...", started Seamus, but then a frown ran upon his face, as he realized. "...actually, yes. It's my fault." "I'm glad you realize", bashed Bob. "But it's too late now, Seamus." "I understand, Bob.", smiled Seamus. Then he pulled out his wallet and gave it to Bob. "Here. It should be enough money to pay for the medical services." Bob inspected the wallet, and then noticed something strange. "But there is only enough money for one medical procedure", Bob asked. "I know, Bob.", Seamus said. A tear ran down his eyes. "After all, do you really think I can survive this accident?" ... Time went by. Bob endured a successful operation in which all of his injuries were treated. Because he was in a hospital, he could not attend to the funeral of his friends. This was a time when Bob was confused. Before, he would have a stale way of life. He would be unemployed, believe in socialism, and his only events in the days that went by were Seamus lecturing him on basic economics. But now, he was the father of Ron and Sarah's baby. He walked out of the hospital, holding the baby. "Alright little guy", he said to them. "I am going to take care of you." Bob was a great father. He found a job so he could take care of the baby, and then, when he gained enough capital, he made his own taco stand. He took great inspiration from his friends; Seamus, Sarah, and the people he met in his adventure in the future. He wanted to be a better father than his father was.The baby called him "Uncle Bob" and they loved Bob. Bob taught the child how to ride a bike, tie their shoes, and many other life skills. He was always there for his new child. Even on Mother's day, he would appear in the school with a wig, just so his son would be happy. But he still couldn't get rid of the memories of the accident. After some time, he turned to alcoholism and denial. ... The child, now 9, woke up in the middle of the night, frightened by some normal nightmare children usually have. They walked quietly over to Bob's room, saying: "Uncle Bob, I can't sleep!". But Bob wasn't in his room. Then the child heard some voices from the kitchen. They walked over to the kitchen, scared. The light was turned on. What he saw was.. incredibly strange. Bob was standing in there, talking to seemingly noone. "But Seamus, central planning is good!", he exclaimed out of nowhere. Then a few seconds passed, and he said "C'mon, Seamus, stop lecturing me on economics!" "Uncle Bob?", the child asked, and Bob's eyes widened in horror. He turned around, only to see his child frightened by his weird behaviour. "Why are you talking to nobody, Uncle Bob? And why are you reffering to Seamus?" Bob knew the game was over. The child could no longer be lied to. It finally was time to tell them the truth. "Ben, come.", Bob said, sadder than ever. "You know how we haven't seen your mom and your dad for so long?" "Yes, Uncle Bob, I thought that was strange too." "Well, Ben... They are not coming back." And then Bob told the child, now named Ben, everything. "So, Mom and Dad died?", asked Ben. "Yes, Ben.", sighed Bob. "I tried to protect you from that fact for so long, but I guess that there really was no point in that." It was all quiet for a moment, and then Ben broke the silence. Not by crying, not by cursing, not by blaming Bob, but by saying: "My Mom and Dad aren't dead." "But, Ben", Bob said. "They are, I just said it." "No, Uncle Bob, they aren't.", Ben said back. Then he smiled and hugged Bob. "YOU are the best Mom and Dad ever. Especially considering you were trying so hard to be both all the time." "Thank you, Ben!", thanked Bob. Now he finally felt rid of the emptiness that he felt all the time. "Y'know, Ben, without you, I would still be the same troglodyte as I was back then when Seamus lectured us all about capitalism, Sarah sold lemonade, and Ron studied performing arts. Thank you for being such a good child."

There are many tools to reduce inflation over time (Germany is doing much better than it was way back when obviously) Requiring banks to hold higher % of their assets as cash, and to lend a lower percentage Raise interest rates on loans to banks to above market levels Raising taxes (Le gasp! Evil) Reduce government spending (obviously) lower production of currency Sell assets Increase goods production Etc. Etc. Basically: anything which reduces money supply/the pressure which requires it There are things which happen out of the government's control. Like abandoning a past currency. Taking Zimbabwe as an example: it's currency imploded. People started doing business with the US dollar.
@FEEonline
@FEEonline 5 лет назад
In addition to what some others said above (ie. removing currency from the system intentionally), it's actually the case that in societies where you have stable currencies, you generally tend to have gradual *deflation*. As the quantity of money remains the same, but the amount of goods & services increases over time as people create more stuff, start more businesses, build more factories, etc., you end up with more stuff chasing fewer dollars and thus prices come down. That said, before we rush into thinking this would be awesome..... it can also be dangerous if done too quickly. Hyper-deflation would mean that people's investments and savings weren't worth anything and they would lose piles of money on long term assets. This is a bit of what happened when the housing market crashed. Lots of people's homes were suddenly worth way less than they thought they would be, and so they had very expensive assets they couldn't sell without taking a huge loss. We don't generally want that either.
