Every time I beat one compulsion like fear of germs. A new version of Ocd happens. From checking to sorting to overthinking.

In my experience, OCD comes from not feeling safe or clean. Working on finding connection with other people, getting physically stronger, and trying to learn new things has really helped. In addition, prepare for anxiety that comes with not checking or doing your rituals. You will have to endure that until your brain gets used to your new habits.

I was with NOCD therapy for a couple years and who I saw was amazing. Really helped challenge me and deal with being uncomfortable. Unfortunately, my insurance wouldn't cover the cost of therapy, and even had a hard time with finding insurance that was accepted by them. Which the out-of-pocket cost was outrageously high, especially for myself, so I don't think I'll be able to see them anymore but if you have Insurance, or can afford the out-of-pocket cost, then I think it's a really great place for therapy. I also agree about the medication part. I've been on two types of medication for OCD one being anafronil and the other is fluvoximine. But like you said I've never really been able to like physically tell if they're making a difference. I don't really feel like oh the medication's working I can feel it in my body. But I know it hasn't made me worse so I kinda look at it as you said just working in the background and I also know that For me, medication won't make all of my OCD problems go away. For me therapy, especially ERP has been the biggest key to recovery

I try to do 20 min a day of mindfulness meditation. It is difficult because of the OCD and anxiety, yet also super helpful... practicing to be still for 20 min and observing thoughts and feelings, not easy, feels impossible, but in a weird way it works. I like the mindfulness workbook called 30 Days to Reduce Anxiety by Harper Daniels, and the Tao Te Ching.

Meds never really worked for me, placebo effect mostly. ERP is the ultimate solution, because only fear that fuels OCD. If you face your fears, they are not fears anymore. No fear, no OCD.

@@aneesh3039 I don't like to say anything like this to a fellow OCD person, but you are an idiot. OCD is the most managable of all mental illness and you can live a 95% OCD-free life even without medication. If you CHOOSE stop doing compulsions, you win. Fear and anxiety are symptoms of OCD, and they are not the real enemy. I had debilitating periods and suicidal thoughts too for years, but I live a happy life now. OCD not disappeared, I only changed my reactions to the thoughts. If I could do it, anyone can, you too. Please don't encourage others to give up just because you gave up.

whoever says I can't recover, they are the ones who stop the treatment halfway, you have to use all the means until you find the medicine that suits you, if you have suffered from ocd for 10-15 years, the duration of the treatment will also be long, remember that those who have deep ocd must take medicine because this disorder is caused by the disruption of hormones in the brain Also, keep an eye on the medical updates on OCD, new drugs may be available to help you recover faster

If I think about it, I guess I had OCD as long as I can think back. I got the full program of it, but I managed to live with it so far. I can't stop brooding over unwelcoming thoughts in my head, which go around in loops, doing ritual behaviour, being frightened shitless of certain situations, aggressive outbreaks, depression. I don't say that it's always easy, but so far, I managed to "cheat" myself through life. I just live with it. Regardless of ocd, I still have times of happiness and joy in my life Through watching this, I learned that ocd is the name for this freakyness in my head and that I'm not the only one like this.

I always had a really hard time adjusting to medication. They would even start me out on half of the lowest dosage and I would still have horrible side effects that I couldn't deal with. Ended up trying 7 medications that didn't work. I'm currently just doing ERP without being medicated right now. I've definitely seen some results but it's not always linear. But overall I feel better than I used to and hope that I can continue getting better

My OCD is linked to agoraphobia, if I stay home, I barely notice it. But it's when I venture out, even a mile away from home, it gets louder and anxiety gets more intense. Mine is somatic related, I start to fear my breath and getting stuck too far from home. My compulsion is trying to avoid the sensation. I'm still trying to figure out how to feel safe anywhere and not have the breathing creep in. It is almost like a fear I will suffocate.

As a fellow person with OCD, my recommendation is finding a therapist that specializes in OCD. They are going to understand and not judge. It’s a scary step but completely worth it. You really can do this, it’s a rough road at first, but if you have OCD you already know what rough is and you’re resilient.

As an OCD sufferer, I naturally think a lot, and here's one conclusion I've reached: I see OCD as a disorder that affects my sense of self. I feel like my identity and self are changed when I don't engage in compulsions or when I break the routine. Maybe that's why when OCD gets bad, people often experience Derealization. Now, 'self' itself is an elusive concept as it could have so many meanings. By 'self', I am referring to the 'Experience of Self'. Maybe the part of the brain that formulates and regulates 'self' is responsible. Now, this is not my field of expertise, but I like thinking about philosophy and forming theories about science and psychology. What are your thoughts?

I was really hellbent and successfully got myself through ERP therapy during 2019. However, my job drastically changed last year causing me a lot of anxiety, uncertainty, and depression which also made me relapse back into my compulsive behaviors and thoughts. I feel like Sisyphus, and my boulder rolled back down the mountain again 🤬

Touch the things you don't want to touch and don't wash. Wipe your hands on your pants, if needed. Act chill and cool physically. Say, "Whatever.." and then do it again and again. You can do this. I know people that haven't had therapy and have the strength in them to lean in to the threats. Start by watching the videos and then go do the things you avoid.
