Any story line now is horrible.. almost like you can picture a bunch of college kids who don’t care about the game sitting at a table with Starbucks trying to come up with a story when the deadline is the next day
I think this doesn't just apply to Racing Games, but old games in general. The main factor is that they were designed from the ground up to be sold AS A COMPLETE PRODUCT. Whereas now they are more interested in selling buggy "Bag of bones" where they add the meat later...through paid DLC's, Battle Passes, and other Live Service BS.
Without having seen the video. An important point about why old games were better is that they were made for a specific audience, rather than for the masses like today's games.
Issue with AAA games in general is, they became so expensive developers are simply not allowed to take chances, and are forced to take the safest, broadest approach possible. End result is watered down experience "for everyone"
Fun Fact about adding Cars: The Cars that you want for Need For Speed are added to Hot Wheels Unleashed, the ones you want for Unleashed are added to The Crew Motorfest, The ones you want for Motorfest are in Gran Turismo 7 and the Ones you want for GT7 are in Forza Horizon 5. Horizon add lots of cars but should reduce it now if they will give Horizon 6 for this year.
I love that all racing games, all the some many times racing games I've ever played, about that graphics,The Cars,Enviroment,,Story, and Background scene, just only that
Facts. Matter of fact, I’m literally on the process of taking time off A9, and spending time in Motorsport 4 to finish up the career. It’s fun going back to my Toyota Aygo, Ford Ka, and my R3 tuned Yaris. It made more memories and progress.
I just could not agree more. Every point hits the exact point on what went wrong with the racing genre. At least NFS tries to cater to everyone, but then again, it is falling prey to the kids. At this point, indie racing games are the way to go that actually hits all the points that you mentioned here.
need for speed most wanted had such a simple yet fun and engaging storyline, which is better than any modern racing game storyline. hopefully ea and bandai namco (tdusc) keep this tradition alive.
That’s true, it was the story that keeps us engaged and makes us want to finish the game. That’s why Forza’s lack of story is the reason why I only play for a little before getting bored and exiting the game.
Old (rubbish but fun) cars I want to see in FH. Vauxhall Nova. Honda Accord. Renault 6 (with the dash gearstick). Ford Capri. Rover 400 (with the Honda engine) and Hillman Hunter.
What kept me playing nfs most wanted 2005 and nfs heat was that the cop chases were so fun and engaging and really intense but nfs unbound have dumbed down the cops where there too easy to outrun and it's because little timmy dosent want "harder" cops as he will rage quit the game.
Your Question with Point One is actually Directly answered by Point Two! You see, the Rise of the Festival Racer is not so much the Developers who are Scared of making anything but Super Happy Festival Racers now, many would probably still like to make "Street" Racers like Criterion (To be Honest however, as EA has had 5 Self Admitted Flops (and Games companies *hate* admitting to Flops, because it *sinks* the Share Prices when they do!!) in a Row with NFS Now, I think they may even Demand that either Criterion or Stellar or Codemasters make a Super Happy Festival Racer for the Next Game just to see if it actually Sells! because "the streets" just ain't Shipping enough Units to make NFS Profitable! ) , it is actually because the Car Companies are *Literally Forcing* them to make Super Happy Festival Racers, as some Companies actually *will not license* , for fears of PR Image Damage in China, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, (Markets where, back in the High Days of Street Racers, Western Games of any kind were actually *illegal* do not Forget, so they didn't need to worry as much as they do now that Certain, Specific, Games are Legal in those Markets) etc, to Open World Games anymore *unless* the Game is a Super Happy Festival Racer! Basically, it is becoming "Festival Racer or Bust" Simply because more and more Car Companies will not License to a Game unless it is a Festival Racer or a Closed Circuit Racer, or something that will not Damage their PR Images with things such as Police Chases or Gritty Storylines or anything else that is "Undesirable" or even *Taboo* in the Strict, yet Vital, Asian and Muddle Eastern Markets! EA will openly admit they have had a Nightmare getting Licenses for Unbound, with Several companies "Refusing to even answer the Phone" to them! So Point Two answers Point One for You. Again, Ferrari , like any Sensible Brand, wants to Protect their PR Images in China, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, and some other Nations, and guess what, Car Customization of any Kind is *Illegal* in those three Countries! Toyota, I think, may have changed their Policy, they are appearing in Western Open World Games again, and in Street themed Games in their own Native Japan, but I note all of the Games they have come back to do not have Police Chases, so I wonder if Toyota Possibly has a Renault Style "No Police Chases" Policy in Place for their License now. Microsoft only cares about Gamepass and Sony only Cares about PS Now, that means they need to aim almost Exclusively at New Players, and the Easiest way to Attract them is with Amazing, Photorealistic, PC Style Graphics, so the "Graphics or Bust" Focus is very much Driven by the Console Manufacturers (who have Final Say on if a Third Party Game appears on their System or not, its why Third Party Games like Motorfest have as many issues with "Graphics or bust" as First Party Games like Horizon or Gran Turismo) , because it is the Easiest way to Attract New Players to Pump up the "Engagement Metrics" on the Subscription Gaming Systems from which they now make the Lions Share of their Profit. Indeed, Attention Spans are Plummeting! Even I am having trouble Focusing for more than Five Minutes at a Time now, that is Probably the Fact I am rapidly Approaching Middle Age more than anything, but it could also be "RU-vid-itus" as well. Indeed, Gamepass does not help either as you have so many Games, back when you had to Buy a Game, at £100 a Game, it was One, maybe Two Games a Year, Tops! so you had to eke them out, now for £40 a Year, you have Thousands of Games... that is no good for Player Retention nor for Player Attention Spans I have to admit, FH3 and on have been somewhat Ruined by this "the Game starts *after* the closing Credits" as it just feels....Pointless.. But, I also do not see a Game where You Start off in a Clapped out old Corrado doing well on Gamepass at all, and Gamepass is all Microsoft cares about! I am not a Fan of Stories in Racing Games, they get in the way, and to be Honest, I find all the Non Stop "Smack" and Animosity (A Bit is OK, but it is Non Stop in the Old Games, and that causes some *Bad* Memories to Surface... and My Mental Health fails very Rapidly Indeed when those Memories Surface so it is best I do not cause them to do so!) to be Utterly offensive and Extremely Depressing, it makes me turn Old Racing Games off! I am actually glad that the Non Stop "Smack" has gone, because it is a Total Turn off for me now, its a Game Breaker, I have never liked it, and now I am used to not having to worry about it, I hate it intensely when it does turn up! With Forza not having Story anymore, it is not so much as the Snowflakes getting Offended (as they get offended by Cheeseburgers! it is Impossible not of Offend them, even FH5 of all Games has caused Offense for some of them because of the Spanglish...although Actually, that is Genuinely Offensive so I am with them on that for once!) it is more a Cost thing, You see, Microsoft has Indeed Mandated that Forza is Family Friendly, they made a PEGI 3 Age Rating Mandatory for all Future Forza Games in 2019 under the "Forza Safe Space" Corporate Policy, but, FH2, even after the 2018 Rewrite to the Video Standards Act that Governs the PEGI Ratings, is only a Re-Render on Ashley (she would need a Higher-Cut Top for the New Rules) away from Keeping its PEGI 3 Rating, yet, Proper Story, Proper Characters, Proper Cutscenes, and 3 Rated to this day with a Re-Render on One Character! So it is more Microsoft probably just not allowing PGG to go to the Expense (as it does limit the Games Profitability) of Hiring a Proper Screenwriter to Write Proper Characters, Proper Voice Actors to Voice them, and a Studio to Animate Proper Cutscenes to show the Characters off! they could still do Proper Characters and Cutscenes in a Nice, Inoffensive, Family Friendly, PEGI 3 Rated Game , FH2 Proves that, its just it is very Expensive to do so, and that Expense is Probably more than Microsoft wants to go to. Back to Point one, a Story like the Crew 1's would be *taboo* in Asia and the Muddle East, and would cause massive PR Image Damage for the Car Companies, so it is most Likely the Car Companies who are *Forbidding* Games from having Stories like TC1's Again. Again, the "No Effort, Maximum Profit" is not so much the Developers, I am sure they would love to Continue all the Early Ambition and Effort for the Later Games, but the Publishers, the Less Effort, and the Less Ambition the Game has, and the More Corporate, Soulless and Recycled the Game is, the Cheaper it is to make, and the Bigger the Profit Margins, and the Wall Street Investors are Demanding 150% Return on Investment, Minimal, so the Profit Margins have to be Massive, so the Game needs to be as Cheap to make as Possible, so the Publishers are basically *Forcing* the Games to be as Cheap, Soulless, Corporate and Recycled, with no Ambition or Effort, as Possible! as it makes the Games Extremely Cheap to make and allows them, the Publishers, to Maximise the Profit Margins and keep the Wall Street Suits happy with massive Returns on Investment Ratios! The Developers are as Passionate as ever, it is the *Publishers* who are making everything Corporate so as to maximise their Profit Margins! You are Right on "Profit over Effort" being the Focus, but it is the *Publishers* who are Behind that, not the Developers. Wrong Target there man!! Again, Offline is going because the Console Makers Charge for Online, so by Forcing Online, they make more Money! its about their Profits! Cutscenes, again, Publisher Greed, Cutscenes cost a lot of Money to Animate, so by Dropping them the Game becomes Cheaper to make and, thus, more Profitable for the Publisher, Interior Modification is again due to Car Companies not Permitting Customization on their Cars so as to Protect their Public Relations Images in Markets where Car Customization of *any* kind is *Strictly illegal* like China, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia etc, and Indicators have gone the way of the Dodo because there just is not enough Buttons available on an Xbox Controller to Implement them without "Context Sensitive" controls that are a Pain to use! Again, all MS and Sony Care about is Gamepass and PS Now, as we know, most Car Guys are Older, as I said, I am danger close to Middle Aged these days, and we Prefer to Own our Games, not good for the Gamepass/PS Now Metrics, which all all MS and Sony care about, most Casuals however just see £100! "I ain't paying that! not when I can get 1000 Games for £40 with Gamepass", so they Aim at the Casuals because they are what Drive the Gamepass Metrics, which generate the Lions Share of Microsofts Profits. Again, with Cars, firstly, a Lot of the Car Companies do not want their Cheaper/Everyday Cars in Games anymore, because it makes the Brand look "Cheap" which Damages their PR Images, so it is very Difficult to get Licenses for the Everyday Cars, its why they are vanishing even from NFS, getting VW to Licence a MkIV 1.9TDI would be Mission: Impossible, because it would make their Brand look Cheap and Damage their PR Image, a MK IV R32 however makes the Brand look Prestigious, and it Improves their PR Image, so they are more willing to License, we also have the Publisher issue as well, you see, on the Rare Occasion Forza *does* add a Relatable, Everyday, Car into the Playlist, the Gamepass Metrics absolutely Nosedive for that Week, so Microsoft is not going to want many Everyday Cars, because it causes a Drop in the Gamepass Metrics, so there is Publisher Pressure to add a lot of Hypercars, because they Generate the best Gamepass Metrics. I hope that Explains it all! Peace Man.
Solar Crown sounds like a lost cause at this point being an online only experience. How many years until we can no longer play the damn game like what Ubisoft is doing to The Crew 1? I wish I never even bought Motorfest.
I think, although I could be wrong, the current Rules at Toyota might be "No Police Chases" , as, if we look, all the Games they have returned to.., including a couple of full on *Street* Games in their Native Japan, none of them contain Police Chases.. This is also inline with Several other Car Brands, such as Renault (Ivory Tower giving the Name Drop there) who also have "No Police Chases" Rules in their Licensing Deals now, so that, *if* (as I said, I could be wrong here!) that is the Case, would Write NFS off pretty Permanently unless they also chase the Trend and go Festival Racer.
@@simeonyves5940 Nah, that is wrong. Police chasing is not the reason for Toyota's absence in NFS Unbound because during the final battle of the Fast 9 film, a custom orange Toyota GR Supra A90 was chased by police cars along with other certain cool custom cars. If Toyota is against racing video games featuring police chasing as this company lets its certain cars appear in movies featuring police chasing, Toyota would be hypocrites. Hypocrisy is a problem and not an answer. Yeah, the real reason for Toyota's absence in NFS Unbound is that developers of Criterion Games didn't re-find the way to work together with the Toyota company.
@af9740 Hmm, it could be the "Pfft, Nerds" tweet from NFS's Official Account that could be the Issue then, as Insults, even in Jest, are Absolutely "N Word Level Offensive" In Japanese Culture, so there is a Chance that TOMOCO Japan may, Possibly, not want to work with EA outside of Certain Sports Licenses (like WRC) where they do not have much a Choice? Again, due to the Business World having fully Fallen to NDA Culture, None of us will ever know outside of TOMOCO and EA what is really going on. At the End of the Day, I do not really care, Unbound is the Kind of Game I *Absolutely Cannot Stand* and I am not going to play it, I was just trying to work out a Logical Reason for Toyotas odd Behaviour.
7:40 This video describes the current state of the racing game segment perfectly ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-syPxMG-o0as.html THERE IS NO PASSION THERE IS NO VISION THERE IS NO AGGRESSION
So in summary, it was more because of developers afraid of change, car manufacturers getting unusually strict, short attention lifespan, lack of identity and priority, graphics priority, mass audience targeting, no storyline because everyone just getting soft these days and can't even take a roast into them.... In the end, our society is devolving, and so does racing games
When it comes to the classic need for speed games the ones 1990s need for speed was all about the high end cars like lamborghinis the story came in the 2000s but I say this it does seem that most newer racing games don't care about car guys it's all about how money they can make off of the game and makeing the games easy for casual gamers to play you cam make more money
Bro you're wrong about Toyota in NFS. Its not the street racing aspect is making Toyota not in NFS because lets be honest in FH5 theres still street racing, its not like whole mexico is closed for the festival those are still public roads you drive on there and Toyota has no problem with that.
It could Possibly be a "No Police Chases" Policy on Toyotas Part, there are Several Other Manufacturers who have those (Ivory Tower even Namedropped one, Renault) , and if we look at the Games Toyota have Returned to... they do not have Police Chases, I could be wrong, but, that would potentially explain a Lot!
@@simeonyves5940No, that's wrong. Also UI was much cooler, more unique and was another element of the games art style/identity. I feel many modern games don't have good UI, at least aesthetically speaking.
I used to spend a lot of time playing midnight club, TDU, TDU2 and the old need for speed games because they were fun and enjoyable and I have made so many memories from those games but nowadays I get bored playing modern games as the are soulless and not very interesting and yes the graphics are stunning but I feel that developers nowadays don't really care about us OG players as they only seem to care about casual players and 12 year olds ( apologies to any casual players and 12 year olds reading this but it's true ) and that's why I don't really play many racing games nowadays
Well, Toyota is featured in certain modern street racing games like Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 6RR and Initial D The Arcade and modern street racing anime like MF Ghost, meaning that illegal street racing is not the reason for Toyota's absence in NFS Unbound. I think that the real reason for Toyota's absence in NFS Unbound is because of time constraints. And the real reason for Toyota's absence in NFS Payback and NFS Heat is because of its exclusivity deal with Japanese racing games in 2017-2019.
well, both wagan midnight and Initial D didn't have any police chase, so what i think is Toyota is fine with their cars featured in street racing, but they don't want any cops in it.
I am Not a real car guy but I totally agree with you... I mean i can't tell that a sound doesn't match the car but i think that graphics isn't that important, but the storyline Is foundamental and I want to drift With a fuk1ng Ford Ka
Ew no. I don't want no econoboxes in my racing game. I play racing games to customize and drive dream cars such as sports cars, supercars, hypercars, and luxury cars, not those senior citizen cars I see on the street everyday and can afford.
Every racing game always has the same over done cars too. Its always a 1969 Camaro and 1970 Chevelle. What racing game ever has a 68 Camaro or a 69 Chevelle? Drives me nuts!!! Forza should have a lot more individual years and multiple trim packages for the cars.
Yuwan its a false belief that street racing stops toyota licensing its gran turismo its believed that gt has an exclusive license with toyota thats why the gr86 and mk5 supra took so long to come to racing games
old racing games are better since back then 10 years ago the genre was still new so none knew what to do so they just decided to make a racing game in there minds todays racing games are just a copy after another
Its more the Car Companies not wanting their Cars to be Customized because their Cars being seen to be Customizable is causing them PR Damage in Countries where Car Customization is Strictly illegal.
I think the fh physics downgraded, my favorite physics were fh2 physics, in fh5 it is too easy to drive fast and to stunt, same for interior high speed camera , in old games the wheel was so good at high speed, it was just better than now, (I'm french and I'm not very good in english)
NFS Hot Pursuit 2, Blur, Driver San Francisco, NFS Most Wanted also Test Drive Unlimited 2 are the last racing games I have played before I stopped playing Racing games. New one I have played is NFS Payback after that all of them are boring also Forza, I never touched Forza I hate it, I hate it ,I hate it. The Crew is million times better than Forza.
Man, I miss when there was a game for every aspect for the racing game genre instead of "Its Horizon with a different name." Devs be copying each other, like its homework. It's like Ubisoft IVT asked for T10s homework and they said *Sure, but change ever so slightly. So it doesn't seem like you copied* . I wouldn't be exited if TDUSC is _another stupid festival racer_ because, tbh, FESTIVAL RACERS MUST STAY IN FORZA. NFS should try to balance the art of great storytelling and building a connection with the cars you will use. Sort of like with heat. Speaking of heat, that game reminds me of a very wrong point about racing games. The "RaCiNg GaMeS dOnT nEeD a StOrY" argument. Depending on what game it is, They either do or do not need a story. For example, having a story in a burnout would be dumb and not having a story in a NFS game would be another NFS No limits.
