its because of US' unhealthy obsession with brands. They don't say "my phone" they say "my iPhone", not MMA, but UFC EDIT: a better example is the whole “green vs blue text bubble” and calling someone poor because they don’t have an iPhone.

The smaller divisions had champions in other things, you had Olympic Gold Medalist, BJJ World Champions, Golden Gloves Champions, etc. And DJ mainly fought dudes his size or bigger his entire career. Unlike Jones who in LHW was full of people with shoddy backgrounds and his most notable wins made their names in the lower Weight classes. The only notable win he's had that was legit was DC and he popped for PEDs after his second fight anyways. DJ > JBJ

From someone who used to go to the IFL,fights at the casino, then the Bellator, king of the Cage and loved “PrideFC best” .elite XC and WEC.It’s so amazing how the UFC has become the primary organization that people that don’t follow any others tag personify the sport. It’s like someone said. People don’t say oh do you like NFL people say no do you like football?

MMA is not a walk in the park obviously, but they tend to retire pretty well in decent condition. At least compared to boxers who are clinically braindead, and even American Football players, who hobble around.

Not a single human being labels the premier league as equal to the turkish süper lig. And noone in their right mind would say becoming ufc champion is just as easy as becoming PFL champion. There's a reason why the UFC champions are all 27+. Because when a fighter is so good that he can make it to the top of the UFC with only 15 fights, noone wants to fight him

@majorramsay55 naw you have different opinions. You said..."despite being considered equal". There are rankings for the football leagues in the world. Top leagues are EPL/ la Liga/ bundesliga/Serie a and even within these, none are looked at as "equal".

Its not just popularity. UFC is the _founder_ of western mma. Dana White was in the room when the first mma rules were being written. Since then, its led the charge into making mma mainstream. Bellator, PFL, ONE - none of those guys ever had a Conor McGregor, or a Ronda Rousey, or a Brock Lesnar. UFC paved the way for every other promotion and is _still_ paving new ground for them. Mma is popular now, but if UFC were to disappear, every other promotion would be boned. I am not convinced any of them have the quality, competition, or captial to carry mma the way UFC is right now.

DM is one of the absolute undisputed GOATS of the sport. Superb striker with both hands and feet and a superb grappler as well. Such a polished athlete as well as being down to earth and humble.
I respect bellator fightzrs so much because they were the only one to come to little clubs to teach us stuff here in france , once some got to UFC , they didn't came no more.

Not just more popular. It's bigger, better and more popular by a huge margin. In football/soccer the english premier league is better and more popular but there're 3-4 leagues that can compete with them when it comes to getting the best players. In mma if ufc want someone they'll get it. It's a monopoly.

I agree with this but it’s also the most popular American company in fighting. It’s like telling someone you play professional football their first question would prolly be “did you play in the NFL”, and prolly not the XFL or USFL.
The common understanding of skill level is so frustrating. A UFC champion. Any UFC champion is a monster, an animal, a complete and utter machine. DJs right tho, they just say "oh you must be good". Good!? Understatement of the century.
Its actually interesting how the UFC was able to position themselves as a brand in the super shady business of fighting. It has its pros and cons. As a business, the UFC can outlast its own fighters in a way. Unlike all the tons of promotions that come and go. The closest thing i can imagine that compares when it comes to fighting its HBO, but they stick mostly to boxing.
Comparing Bellator and PFL to the UFC is like comparing the XFL to the NFL, Macdonald's to fine dining, current MCU to phases 1-3, Mexican tap water to Evian etc.
It's really not, but that's how the market sees it. XFL consists of players that literally speaking tried and couldn't make it in the NFL. There is no pipeline that makes a world class fighter fighting in the UFC inevitable. There is no UFC draft.
It’s like NFL vs arena football. Sometimes you find some studs in there that move up but everybody only cares about the big boys. Similar thing with pro wrestling

I started watching Bellator as a kid with my dad can’t say I’m like a crazy fan or anything but I do really enjoy watching fights or hosting or attending a viewing party that being said I don’t care about any fighting organization like I do the ufc I couldn’t tell you why but I respect it more and end up paying them the most attention by far
Well the main reason for that is UFC became known for mma. Bellator and pfl arent recognized as much because the ufc is mainstream and not alot of people talk about the pfl or bellator
Whenever someone asks me what is the difference between MMA and the UFC, I say it is the same difference between soccer and the UEFA champions league, or football and the NFL. One is a sport, the other is the major promotion for the sport. Simple enough yet for some reason some people don't realize it. It is probably the only case of people knowing about a promotion for a sport, but not understanding what the sport is.
It's entirely logical, mma is such a young sport and many forget that, it'll evolve and I really wanna see ufc knocked off the helm, because of their business practices, but unlikely at this point

Some people may think it sounds bad but as bad as it sounds, it's also a good thing because the first thing that comes to people's minds is the UFC which is exactly what the media wants to have happen, if you see a fighter and your first thought is UFC just like if I say what's the first thing that comes to mind when I say NHL and you say McDavid, Crosby or Ovi that's a good thing showing association to a sport
