Why outlawing cannabis was a HUGE mistake

We've used cannabis for tens of thousands of years. Not just to get high but also to make textiles, paper, medicine and much more. We then outlawed it for decades - only to realize the stuff is pretty good at helping fight climate change. So get ready for the cannabis comeback.

We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world - and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

Yes but you might want to re-check your records on amount of water to produce a shirt made of cotton? I think that value maybe has an extra zero added when it shouldn't? That's excessive and who ever is producing cotton and consuming that quantity of water to do so...... All they are doing is donating water to the clouds so it can rain in some other land other than where the cotton is growing? The cotton didn't consume 3000L to make a shirt, that's for sure! Maybe 300, but even then only a small percentage is absorbed by the cotton plant. The biggest costs associated with cotton is the millions of dollars spent on height gradienting the land so that flood inundation techniques can be employed to water the crop. In areas of high rainfall they tend to use water storage reservoirs (in Australia we call them turkey nest dams). The water is free because it's captured and stored. It's not consumed it's contributed back as evaporated water somewhere else? And somewhere else is watering something different...... And their water is that takes a huge dump to be stored for cotton farming? If you dig even the slightest hole in a cotton paddock you'll likely get shot immediately on the spot! You've just created a depression and that is going to cause big problems! Lol

My great-grandfather made a lot of things from hemp using different parts of the plant - baskets, ropes, rags, sacks, door mats, even an air filter! And that was a century ago. For the record, the hemp plant he used had very different characteristics from "ganja". It's a separate species (Cannabis ruderalis maybe, but I'm not sure). It got banned a long time ago, not because people were misusing it, but because narrow-minded and/or vile-tempered politicians did not want the general populace to have access to such a versatile plant. It allowed people to be independent and self-sufficient in many aspects of their daily lives. And that's something Big Brother does not like.

In addition, the CO2 is permanently bonded within the fiber that is used for anything from textiles, to paper and as a building material. In my country, Sierra Leone, many young men have made a living growing cannabis for a lucrative trade in banned substance. This has had an immense impact on food crops production not only in terms of diminishing numbers in crop production but also in terms of costs for hired labour. These young men use fertilizers, and today constitute a small minority of farmers who can afford the extortionist prices of 50 kg bags of 15-15-15, 20-20-0 or urea in the parallel market. A Chang in policy will immediately allow youth and older farmers diversify not only production but also processing for local and export markets. What a REVOLUTION that would be in our impoverished rural communities. Eliminating corrupt police injustices could be a huge added bonus.

In Eswatini (Swaziland), the Opium and Habit forming Drugs Act of 1921 is a piece of legislation introduced by the British to criminalize the plant because they feared that it would destroy their cotton industry. It is not true that the plant is inefficient in contrast to trees in terms of the production of paper. Moreover, in about the same year or so in the USA, a car was built entirely out of hemp which they saw as a threat. Indigenous people the world over have used and are very knowledgeable about the plant compared to Europeans to be very frank. It boils down to economics at the end of the day.

This is a very informative piece. I love the open and factual approach to the topic of Cannabis. It is become more and more clear that the criminalisation of the plant and focus on the abuse of the recreational aspect was intentional. If we are honest with one another, it is the players in sectors like the Pharmaceutical as well as Textile industries that championed the policies which led to how it is perceived today. We need to overcome decades of mental conditioning and social engineering that ensured it is shunned. With more insights and detailed research as well as demonstrated benefits of the plant, I believe the process of unlearning is well underway. Cannabis stands to do the world a whole lot of good in the long run. And just to point out; the use of Cannabis as a recreational substance is alright. It is when it is overused (abused) that it becomes harmful. Infact, ANYTHING that is overused is harmful to the person using it. I believe that eventually hemp use in all its ramifications will be widespread as more research looks into its potential benefits, many of which have already been proven.😊

Now make industrial hemp that is also high in THC. Now use the plant for material and the flower for smoking

I know you mention that building regulations can be slow to update, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes soon. So many people are already aware of how much emissions come from our buildings and homes so they want to update this. In addition, studies are starting to come out which show that our current trajectory with building improvements isn’t enough to achieve net zero. I was reading one on the UK’s housing policies just the other day. The big reason for the miss is that we need to update EXISTING housing stock. So I could see hemp insulation being fast tracked for approval very soon. Maybe I’m just a wishful thinker though…

It's an amazing plant given it's unique properties for insulation and building. It's long overdue to change building codes to go for sustainable futures for homes and buildings. Looks like I am going to look for the hemp insulation, see if it's available here. Politics be damned, if it's both incredibly strong, useful and absorbs CO2 many times that of lumber, it's beyond incomprehensible that we're not using it.

Not understanding how to use hemp for the greater good was the mistake. Great story. :)

I always thought it was strange that some people call it a drug when i can clearly see it is a plant. I can even point to it for them and pull a leaf off of it. Plant. Not drug. Plant.

Thanks for another great video. It definitely hints at the unimaginable potential of Hemp in the future, based on the interesting figures shared in the video. Based on 2022 assumptions we are forecasting the global market valuation of Hemp at $4B with opportunities to reach around ~$170B. That is a huge 'aha-moment," for the visionaries. Imagine, the numerous amount of business opportunities that are created, this will could be a mini-circular economy start-up scene taking root. What if, Hemp could be the ball that sets in motion our green future?
