Pagan Min is not like other far cry villains or like other Villains in general and that's because he is so hard to hate as a Villain and far easier to love as a good guy or as someone who is a protagonist. But why is this why is it that a ruthless dictator is somehow easy to like and not very hard to understand as a person. So join me so we can dive into Pegan as a character and why is so easy to love and so hard to hate!

Min isn’t supposed to be the villain. Simple. He’s an indirect antagonist. Sabal and Amita are supposed to be the “villains”.
@poisonpawn6452
@poisonpawn6452 10 дней назад
@@thomaskilroy4573 That's true. You can see that in how they treat you. Amita treats you with disdain from the start (and especially after you burn the drug fields). Sabal is kinder, but straight up uses you. Doesn't care if you live or die, only about your results.

As well as genuine growth and concern for a country that blinded itself to worshiping a British explorer and her unmentioned ex husband. Pegan saw many of the opportunities the Kyrat people can push forward, but their one-eyed leaders were pushing for illegal and possible proxy-wars from other neighboring countries they simply couldn't win. This is like watching the GATE anime with the Tokyo siege scene where the Ancient-Roman copies get chewed up by Cold War weaponry!?!

The thing with Amita and Sabal and the fact that the power goes to their heads doesn't really change anything about Pagan as a character and he is still responsible for far worse stuff than them... We can say that Amita and Sabal is a product to Pagans tyranny over a long time and the Golden Path as a whole are still clearly the "right side" and mostly consist of civillains trying be free from opressers just like in far cry 3, far cry 4 and far cry 6... Don't really get this thing with Pagan that he is a "lesser evil" just because he is not evil towards the player or because Amita and Sabal becomes bad aswell at the very end... He is literally straight up and purposely evil to everyone but Ajay and doesn't value any human life who is not Ajay. He is the most evil antagonist of the franchise because he is knowingly evil and clearly takes joyment in being ruthless. He never tries to justify or explain anything what he does, completely self motivated and he consciously enjoys being evil.

I always liked how this game doesnt have Good guys VS Bad guys. Pagan Min is the legitimate ruler of the Kingdom of Kyrat. He's authoritarian, despotic and a bit psychotic, yes, but I can hardly call him the bad guy when compared to the Golden Path. Then you have the Golden Path, who do use slaves and the drug trade and launch terrorist attacks (due to them attacking the legitimate ruler and royal army) and do not shy away from executing civilians. Both sides are doing the same horrid things they accuse the other of doing. I'd say Pagan is the best option, as he is seemingly trying to modernize and improve Kyrat which is practically centuries behind in development and living standards. The Golden Path is actively trying to reverse that and no matter which side you pick it's either a religious dictatorship under a child figurehead that executes hundreds of civilians, OR, an authoritarian dictatorship that uses child slavery to force them in to drug fields turning Kyrat into a narco state. Neither side caring about Ajay, just using him as a figurehead during the civil war due his father starting it. Atleast Pagan actually cares about you and even intends to hand Kyrat over to you. (Which is a good idea, rebels would rally behind Ajay due to his father, and loyalists would follow him since he's now been legitimized as King)
@Aerophina

The others treat you like a tool, Pagan treats you like family the entire game even when you’re actively killing his people. This game needed a proper playthrough where you side with Pagan. There is no happy ending except if we the players had agency to make our own decision.

It just goes to show HE is the one extending olive branches, but the Golden Path are the ones slapping those away. So, Pagan acts accordingly. But, if you want to be cynical, the only reason he's nice to you is not only because of you being the son of the woman he loved, but because if you take his side, it delegitimizes the Golden Path if the old leader's own son refuses to continue the conflict.

also you had the background of Ishwari wrong. Mohan was a former Royal Army soldier, but after the first Kyrati civil war, he created the Golden Path - the name from one of Ishwari's dreams of her and Mohan on a golden path. Pagan arrived from Hong Kong as a triad, and worked with Mohan to install a distant relative of the former royal family but Pagan murdered the relative and took the throne for himself. Mohan went to war against Pagan and Ishwari wanted to help so he sent her with Ajay to spy on Pagan. She and Pagan fell in love and had a child, and he took Ajay as a son. Mohan was enraged, so he killed Lakshmani, and then tried killing Ishwari and Ajay. She killed Mohan in self-defense then fled because she could have been discovered to originally be a spy and destroy her life with Pagan, or be assassinated by the Golden Path. Her fleeing to the US was to protect Ajay.

You blew my mind. I never thought about the bus section like that before. By the end of the game, we see why The Golden Path are...not quite what they seem (small wonder given the leaders themselves even fight each other) and you pointing out they are the reason Ajay nearly perishes in the bus, as well as the people that actually do perish there thanks to them, really makes one think. I found Pagan Min an entertaining villain, but over the years, I progressively began to like him the more I learn about him and how different he is from other FarCry villains, let alone villains in general, largely thanks to his relationship with Ajay's mother. You wouldn't think something so simple would make such a fascinating villain, yet here we are.

I thought the two rebels in the bus were simply running away rather than opening fire. But the reason why he violently kills the guard at the beginning is because he was afraid that he accidentally murdered his beloved stepson.

I really liked Farcry 4... that said, I couldn't beat it. Not because I lost interest so much as I did not like any of the options the game provided. I legit just wanted to leave and not help anyone when you reach the choice moment between Sabal and Amita, and in a way by just turning the game off and stop playing, I did. lol

As a military dictator king, Pagan was deeply balanced and aware of the extremism in his region. His measures to control it were calculated and regulated. He shows love for a child of his lost love and deepest enemy (Mohan). And he does his best to shield him from the turbulent politics and violence of his small rogue nation state. All to allow Ajay spread Ishwari’s ashes respectfully. He’s without question the only Far Cry villain that isn’t actually evil. Pagan is just a deeply somber pragmatic leader of a chaotic region doing his best to keep it all together.

On a random note, a lot of stories show an East Asian character falling in love with a Caucasian character. This is the first series to show an East Asian character in love with a south Asian character, which is significant given historical colorism and post colonial racism towards darker skinned people.

not gonna lie. from the 3 different paths Farcry 4 can go through. Pagan's path is the least bad one. With Amita you witness how the ruler of tevyat got replaced... but nothing about the regine really changed... there is a argument for it being even worse than it used to be. With Sabal you witness a crazed preacher cutting down anyone who disagrees with the simple idea of rejecting his religion. With Pagan... atleast you have the chance to stop a small rebelion from becoming a large national disaster.

Vaas was broken, and driven mad by the weird, dark shamanic rituals of his sister, and the war above all else culture of the islands. Just like Jason ends up being throughout the game. Dude lost his mind, and Hoyt and his financiers exploited that, and used him to their own ends just as his sister used Jason to her's. So far as favorites go, I've gotta go with Pagan. Dude's just too fun for me to hate.

Pagan Min is hard to hate because he loves you, and even as you kill his generals, dismantle his army and destroy his kingdom, he still love you. And it's really hard to hate back someone who *unconditionally* loves you. And it doesn't help that, in the end, you realize you only truly had to pick between two dictators, who used you to meet their goal and are now ready to discard you now that your usefulness is passed. It's really a bitter ending, because of I were to pick a dictator, I would've at least picked one who loves me.

Honestly, just the fact that Min comes back to the dinner table after like 10-15 minutes when you're supposed to escape, triggering the secret ending, and that he does so unarmed and relaxed, shows the trust he has in Ajay. That scene on it's own tells us so much about Min it's kind of a crime you didn't talk about it more.

I know Pagan Min is suppose to be a the main villain of the game but I don't think he does anything systemically bad. Yes people are tortured and killed in battle but you can say that about any of them. It was Sabal who began executing people. It was Amita who began kidnapping kids for labor. Yes Pagan stole gold but that's not executing or kidnapping.

He's really not, he stabbed a guy in the spine with a fork and then expected you to sit there and wait after making an incredibly threatening parting of "Enjoy the food, *I'll be right back."* Yeah, I'd book it out of there as well, and found it *incredibly* easy to hate him up until the point I sent him tumbling down the mountain in a flaming helicopter. I always think cults are crazy until i remember how even the most superficial charisma can make people drop to their knees in worship. Amita is by far the most evil, but I view Sabal and Min as the same.

Pagan Min doesn't love Ajay. Pagan Min LOVES Ajay's Mother THROUGH Ajay. Ajay is The Thing he has of Her, and he would do anything to Protect it.. even Handing Over The Kingdom to him (Ajay). That was The Whole Point of/to The Confrontation/Secret Ending (which in My Head Canon, is The REAL Ending).. where He Leaves (with or without) you after you Return The Ashes. He wanted an Heir. Even if it wasn't his Blood. In The End.. I think Ajay's Mother still Loved Min. I think she was just Traumatized by The Whole Thing, and couldn't be around Him because he may have Reminded her of your Dead Sister. Which I undoubtedly think he understands.. but he had No One to Emotionally Hold on to. Which is what I think led to his Psychological Collapse. 😅 Switching gear.. The Thing about Father was, he was a Prophet. The Psychedelic Drugs inadvertently gave him The Gift of Foresight; and him being "Human" (American). He sought Out to save Humanity The Best/Only Way he knew how.. through Violence. In The End (The Post-Apocalyptic Sequel), he learned that he was Wrong (about The Violent Route).. but it was too Late. His Flock has all become too Comfortable to Resorting to Violence.. and his Actions had Even Taken The Life of his Son. So he is Left with Nothin' but Regret.
