Why Palpatine Didn't Allow Grievous to Duel Anakin During the Clone Wars 

If the two had met prior to RoTS, Grievous would always be wondering why Anakin wasn't older and Anakin would be wondering why Grievous wasn't taller everytime they fought.

The fact that Palpatine held Grievous in such high regard, and yet Grievous failed over and over again during TCW to defeat Kenobi, should have caused Palpatine to respect Kenobi a lot more than he did at that point. IMO, underestimating Kenobi was one of Palps’ fatal flaws in the prequel era.

The meta reason is the “I thought you’d be taller” line from episode 3. And how Dave Filoni didn’t want to retcon it during the Clone Wars so did everything he could to keep Grevious and Anakin from encountering each other in the show.

I love how my boy Obiwan had rivalry with Vader, Maul, and Grievous, they could not take him down. Obiwan is definitely my favorite Star Wars character.

The reality is that GL had Anikan say "You're shorter than I expected", and because that line implied that they hadn't met beforehand, it would be written that Anikan could only ever "just miss" Grievous.

When I was a kid watching 2003 Clone Wars, the interaction between Anakin, Obi wan, Mace, and Palpatine talking about General Grievous, when it focused on Anakin I took it as it implied Grievous gave Anakin his scar.

Even though they never canonically met, I still like the fact that they still have interaction voice lines in Battlefront 2

A clash between two of the angriest and fiercest lightsaber duelists in all of Star Wars would be epic to see; but despite my confidence in Anakin, I think Grievous could succeed in killing him. This is mainly do to the fact that Grievous' fighting style revolves around countering aggression with aggression, literally mimicking the moveset of his opponent, and tearing them apart. The only conceivable way I could see Anakin winning is if he used his massive power in the Force to crush Grievous, or by going against his nature by fighting defensively like Obi-Wan. Considering Obi-Wan being the undisputed master of Form III, the all defensive form, is what made him the only Jedi who could take Grievous in a straight up duel, Anakin would have had to at least fight half as well on the defensive as Obi-Wan to beat Grievous. Yeah, the Dark Side would have made him stronger, but Grievous would have been able to turn all that added aggression against him.

Grievous relies on his opponent being intimidated. It keeps them from having a clear connection to the Force. Anakin fears many things, but all of them have to do with harm to others, not himself. This is a rare situation where Anakin’s overwhelming arrogance would work to his advantage. Anakin would be absolutely free to draw on the Force on a fight, and with Form V lightsaber Mastery, Grievous would find it difficult to keep Skywalker on his backfoot; Anakin would always be able to swing back hard if Grievous got the upper hand. Grievous miiight be able to win in an ambush, but in a fair fight, Anakin would pull off the win.

I wish they’d use grievous more in the new canon. His backstory and how he became this monster is tragic.

I also think that Palpatine also knew that Anakin was an “Act first, speak later” type of person, especially closer to the end of the war. Anakin never hesitated to kill a direct threat, and General Grievous was definitely a direct threat. Had Anakin engaged Grievous, most likely the cyborg general would be either completely incapacitated and captured, or killed (which IMO he would choose to do first). Palpatine couldn’t have this, as he said when Grievous actually was captured in the Clone Wars by the Gungans, because he was a key role in the whole war that Palpatine controlled. Had he lost Grievous too soon, everything could’ve fallen apart. There wouldn’t be another like Grievous to replace him with either, unlike with Dooku. Having the two meet both had negative outcomes, with either Anakin dying or Grievous dying, both ruining his whole plan. I also just love how we have all of this speculation because of one throw-away line in the movie, its pretty great.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Grievious laugh a bunch of times. May have been and ironic evil laugh but he did laugh… but I get the whole” he doesn’t breathe, he doesn’t laugh” thing sounds pretty badass and menacing.

On one hand Anakin is impulsive in a fight and a bad match for Grievous that trained to exploit imbalance in Jedi. On the other, Anakin never shies away from copious usage of Force abilities such as Push or Crush, which Grievous doesn't have a countermeasure against and always retreats from.

This video totally sums up why Legends Grevious was the bomb. I mean General Grievous is still my favorite Star Wars character. However his canon self is a laughing stock compared to his Legends self. I honestly would love a Disney+ Grevious series going over his ore cyborg self and his introduction into the clone wars. Honestly of they remade his 1st appearance from the 2003 animated series; that would be a dream come true. Also a live action Disney+ series going over the Invasion of Couresult and napping of Palatine by Grevious.

I think Anakin would win. Grevious is used to his opponents fearing his and always being on the defensive and always on the back foot, while skywalker who is the opposite and his form 5 is defensive with rebounding powerful offense which grevious wouldn’t know how to handle cause he never faced anyone like that. Just like kenobi, kenobi wasn’t scared and went at grevious, as well as kit fisto, kit went at grevious making him look bad. Anakin would win.

He had no force sensitivity and was trained by Dooku, who Anakin (after getting angry) destroyed in 15 seconds. It took a single Force Push from Kenobi to send Grievous into the ceiling lmao

Imagine if these 2 ever met on the battlefield... Gracious woulda shredded Skywalker... OR... There'd been dead Cyborg parts strung out all over the place and very likely as both pulled out all the stops HAD both decided they was gonna fight it out to the death... That they'd literally kill each other in a mix of both. Grevious was SO lethal to Jedi think even Mace an Yoda woulda understood an even deemed it required to do whatever was needed to best him had it come down to it.. seeing as Mace woulda understood from personal experience an even had to do such measures himself.. Anakin did it anyways an though mentioning himself how bad he erred all he got was a pretty much "meh, Dooku had it coming." From Kenobi an apparently all the other Jedi had any said anything at all... Showing how Mace tried an almost did same to Palpatine there's for sure EXCEPTIONS the Old Republic Council DID reserve in a class of threats so uniquely dangerous they had to be brought to Justice one way or the other regardless of the means

Volume is terrible.

Plot hole, Wizards can levitate sunk spacecraft from the depths of their graves, yet can’t lift a robot or even crush their heart? . Also, why can’t Anakin just use the force to keep him alive, clearly he can manipulate the organic functions of others… it’s like the Wizard from Dr. Strange that broke his back, just wizarded his legs back to working.

No, Grievous was used to keep Obi Wan away so that Palpatine could work on converting Anakin without Obi Wan's influence because if there was anyone who could keep Anakin from turning to the dark side it was Obi Wan.

Honestly, I think that Anakin would have won. Grevious constantly lost to countless padawan in the clone wars.

I think Anakin would win. Grievous’ greatest strength against Jedi is his ability to create doubt and fear but Anakin is reckless and arrogant to the point where this wouldn’t be effective against him. It’s why Mace would curbstomp Grievous too.

I believe Grievous would be no match for Anakin, if they fought during RoTS. When he tapped into the dark side to fight his enemies, there were few at that time who could handle him. He is The Chosen One, after all. Anakin would definetely crush Grievous.

Because of one line in the movies. And General Grievous did cross paths with Anakin in canon. In clone wars Anakin was unconscious but grievous was not.

i feel like Anakin would have shredded grievous, because we all saw how easily Obi Wan sliced off his hand and how Kit Fisto sliced his legs off. Anakin has lightning fast reflexes and would have sliced off multiple hands at once before finishing grievous off.

One of the reasons Obi-Wan was chosen to face Grievous was due his his defensive Form III fighting style. The Jedi always said that he had completely mastered that form, and that’s why he was chosen, because he could easily defend against Grievous’s 4 arms, and multiple lightsabers. Anakin used form 5, which opposite to Obi-Wan’s, was allot more aggressive. If Anakin faced off against Grievous, I doubt he’d have the defensive skills to blocks Grievous’s multiple attacks. Now I’m not saying that Anakin can’t defend, it’s just he’s specialised more in physical, and aggressive attacks, and his defensive skills are nowhere near Obi-Wan’s, because Obi-Wan had truly mastered Form III. I just don’t think that Anakin would have the defensive skills to parry Grievous’s 4 lightsaber’s. The only attribute that could turn the tide, and give Anakin the win is the fact that Anakin can use the force, and Grievous can’t.

If Anakin and Grievous ever did meet, I think their interactions would go something like this: Grievous: You must be Kenboi's apprentice? Such a shame. Anakin: And you must be Droid Army General. Time to cut you down to size. I would have sincerely enjoyed a match between them two although Grievous is focused on overwhelming and speed whilst Anakin is focused on strength and overpowering

I think we overthink many of these things, it might just be the fact that it should make sense in order to their meeting in the original movie to be the first meeting they have and thats it, then again, by overthinking its very cool that Dooku himself was just way better in mind games to push Anakin. Grevious would just be into fighting legit

I believe that General Grievous had become more of a machine than a man upon his cyborgization, thus his sheer cruelty was far too much for any Force sensitive living being to be able to either confront or handle. Even the chosen one Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader would circum to Grievous' intense battle tactics.

Yeah grivous sometimes appears weak only because kenobi with his extreme mastery of soresu is a counter for him.

I think General Grievous would had won he had Obi Wan beat in their duel the only reason Obi Wan won is because of a gun and because the general got a little bit cocky like almost every opponent he fought in the prequels the only reason he was able to beat them is because the got cocky except for Count Dukko who basically destroy him on both duels but anyway i think the general would have beaten Anakin in a duel it wasn't until he became Darth Vader that he became a more calculated duelists then i think he would have beaten the general

One thing I don't understand about Grievous is why stop at 4 arms? why not 6? or 8 for that matter? 10? 12? the arms he could have had, the dangerous he would have been.

For Grievous being such a "Monster" as you say he is clearly beaten a lot and not very powerfull. I would have thought its because Anakin would have killed him with ease and palpy ofc needed Grievous for the Clone wars.

Because grevious was a smart and cunning warrior and anakins brashness and irrational thinking wouldve costed him his life. This exact disadvantage is the exact thing grevious wants and looks for while fighting. That is how he defeated durge and assaj ventress before becoming general. He finds the tiniest weakness and exploits it to the fullest of his ability.

It's because George wrote it like they met for the first time at the start of EP III before considering Grievous would be a central character in CW, they never meet face to face in the show.

Anakin would beat Grievous if they ever fought. But if they met too early in the war Anakin would have decimated him when Grievous was still needed or Grievous would have survived, learned from the fight, and become unbeatable and Grievous did have to eventually be destroyed.
