If you want to read well, you should read a lot. If you want to write without mistakes, you should write every day. If you want to "know" language, you should communicate. The Idea is very simple, isn't it? Simplest is the best.

I've been using this lovely channel to learn English as my second language. I know that I won't be totally perfect when I'll try to express myself in a foreign language. That's normal. Everyday I'll learn something different and the most important thing is, don't give up of learning other language.

Hi teacher! I agree 100% with you. Most of the English language I learnt was by my own and when I housed a girl from Sweden in my home (Uruguay), who was fluent in English because she was studying in the USA before she arrived here and as a result I improved my English skills. When she left I started to learn English in an Institute (B2 level) in which I was doing it great at first, but gradually I started to decline my ability not only to speak but also with other stuff related to the learning process. I wish she had stayed a bit longer…

Hi Teacher! In my opinion in this cases, it happens because the people simply don’t care about your story to be there trying to speak another language. I arrived at Sydney almost 3 months ago and last week I had my worst experience until now. I was transferred from Brazil to Sydney by my company and since I received a notice I started working harder in my English skills and I was already studying before it. But last week one colleague laughed at my face when I was trying to explain one thing about the job. He’s a native speaker and in his country. I’m from another country trying to communicate. Obviously I need to improve and fast and probably I need to be more prepared, but sometimes people simply will put you down but we need to overcome this situation!

Motivation is the best thing a student can bring to class, motivation is the key to move forward, doesn't matter how hard the work is when motivation is on, so, when you hear that someone can destroy your motivation in just a few seconds, well, you cannot say that that person is a teacher, teachers create great things, teachers encourage students to keep pushing, teachers help students move forward, teachers care about his/hers students, someone who understands what students need to move from something to something else, is a great teacher, but someone who, apart from that, knows how to do it, well, I call them excellent teachers.

I am a student. and I have been learning English for three years just with the destination to pass the exam and get high scores. actually I hate English with learning the extremely boring grammar stuff. however, after I finished my high school, when I transformed my opinion to paly with this language I found that I am really grateful for the period I was getting this boring fundamentals. because it gave me the basic to go around with English. so, you should realize that it's just a beginning for a language after you finished your grammar. and just play with, establish the connect of your life to this language you like.

I'm preparing myself to enter university (in a translation course) and I reached the level I got by myself. This last year I've been attending a course which tipically follows the structure of a teaching book and workbook. I always hated to follow that structure because sometimes it seems useless and a waste of time. Fortunately my teacher (sometimes) breaks that structure and when he does I end up having the most interesting class. So I fully aggree with what you've said. I'm angry too. I hope I make a difference someday. Keep shouting!

I totally agree. The teacher should sympathize, but that rarely happens. Often they're non native speakers themselves and their only way of teaching is by textbook, grammar rules. They learned that way and can't teach in a different one. Including you only learn "proper" English or whatever language, not one single idiom fitting for every day' s use.😢

Imagine that there are always people, especially teachers, who instead of stimulating, motivating, cultivating enthusiasm are always focused on mistakes, limitations, destroy the student's confidence. Hi teacher. I feel very encouraged by your attitude. Especially when you talked about learning English to communicate. And you're absolutely right. It's about the learner's self esteem. I don't feel comfortable speaking with my native accent. But being a non speaker, a gap of decades without the opportunity to speak English, having reached a certain age etc. it won't disappear. Probably I'd feel better by just being fluent. My reading is much better than my speaking, for I can't practice. Fluency is one thing, pronunciation another. When I'm hearing foreigners speaking m y native language, it isn't all about fluency, that doesn't feel right, but the wrong pronunciation, that irritates me and distracts me. I' m grateful for subtitles on RU-vid, but they sometimes they're gibberish. Of course understanding depends on the accents being used. American accents are probably easier than British ones. So my goal isn't sounding like a native speaker anymore, but neutral speaking. Is it possible to reach that goal ? Greetings from Germany 😅

I've lost a lot of my time at school. In a classic school. That's why my 12 year old son does not go there. We learn at home. Yes, we learn together: me and he, everything, always and everywhere. We're experimenting. It seems to me that home education is slowly changing the classic school, for the better. At least in Poland. I’ve been working as a teacher since 2005 and I really love my job, which is not giving my students all done, instead, I help them through the learning process. Most of the time I ask them not to open their books, but close them! Books sometimes are jails, so we don’t think, we just repeat what someone has already thought. (Sorry, my English is just a work in progress!)

I agree with you. Absolutely. What you are saying is about practical common sense and meaningful experience when learning a foreign language. The guy asking the first question was unnecessarily exposed to some metalanguage. Terms, definitions, concepts etc to talk about the language; not to talk or use the language itself. This is quite a common problem which you can observe in "advanced" level classes where some considerable number of teachers think that talking about language means using the language. Nope. As an experienced non-native teacher of English, I can confidently say that's not the case Knowing all the rules, explanations, grammar charts, even the long lists of vocabulary will not make your English much better. Unless you use the language by listening, speaking, reading and writing; it will soon fade away. Unless you interact with other (native/non-native) speakers/users of English, the rules you have learned, the exercises you have done will not make sense. And learning necessary grammar rules, and some basic vocabulary is only some small part of acquiring a language. The biggest part of language learning is to practice it in a meaningful context. This could be a work environment, or an educational environment where you actually need to use the language in any form, written or spoken in order to interact with others. The question in the second post is also about learning independently and gaining confidence. The problem here is that becoming aware of the fact that native speakers sometimes, unfortunately, tend to intimidate the non-native speakers by just speaking fast and/or using unfamiliar idioms or phrases. I had this horrible experience quite a few times, but they didn't my destroy my confidence at all; on the contrary, I started to believe that I had to practice more and more to gain native-like proficiency. But at the same time, I sadly learned that there might be some native-speakers out there who are ready to intimidate you by their naturally acquired mother language. I know this is unfair, but it is a fact. Sad but true. I learned English by myself. Well, almost myself. I went to a modest language school quite briefly but then I had to get a full time job for a living. Then, I started to study independently whenever I found time. I really believed that I could learn some English just enough to survive by studying on my own. And I still believe so. I read books, first simplified versions of English classics. Then I got less simplified ones. I listened to them as well. There were audio cassettes accompanying the books. (I am talking about the late 1980s) Whenever I saw one in a bookstore, I bought them. I had a collection of audio books with texts and I can't remember how many times I listened to them, and read them. I also did some grammar exercises. The only grammar book I had was "English Grammar in Use" by Raymond Murphy. I also had a dictionary, "Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary" which I am still using :) One day, while I was enjoying a new book that I'd bought from a second-hand book store, a friend of mine came to me and said, if I could read that book, I should go to college and study English literature. First I thought he was kidding. But he wasn't. He said the book I was reading wasn't simplified, it was just a collection of short stories of which language was relatively simpler compared to the other works in English literature. (The book was "Modern Short Stories", which I still recommend to my students) Then I realized that I was at a higher level of English proficiency than I thought. Later, I decided to go to college, passed all the exams, and studied English language and literature. Now I've been teaching English to students at a university in Istanbul for many years. When I enter the classroom for the first time with a new group of learners, I always emphasize that learning is a personal experience and only thing they need is guidance on their way to proficiency. They need to have the necessary skills to gain their confidence and independency for learning and using English. It is also true that language learning is not like learning an academic subject like geography or history. It is a set of skills that can only be gained by practice. However, as with many things in todays marketing world, unfortunately, language learning has also been extremely commercialized as a business sector to make profit. That's why, learner autonomy is not promoted or supported so that the business can make money off of *dependent* learners. What a shame!

Wow, Christian, you are charming and it's not easy to refute your arguments two things I picked up from your talk, The first is there are few teachers that motivate students to learn "to learn", the second is and I agree that the important thing is to communicate no to learn grammar rules. if is thought how to appear a language from the start and then the grammarians write rules for their use seems something orthopedic, my doubt is, do you recommend learning a language without study rules? I think that basic rules and a good teacher are important to accelerate the learning of a language. Oh, How I would like to hear from you!!!! Anyway, millions of thanks for your teachings.

And I'm about to be 34 now, as you can see I can use this tool. God damn the boring grammar rules. I've been studying English, without a teacher, or a course. Hello. My name is uğur (which means luck). I want to say something about language learning. Actually my English is not good. Because of the education system of my country. After about nine years of education, my English is really bad. It was even worse. The school gave me almost nothing. With watching movies, chatting with people on the internet, playing games (especially role playing games), I improved my English. Still I can't speak. I can only understand if someone speaks slowly. So I realized that the only way to learn a language is speaking and listening, communicating. Not memorizing grammar rules. Because when we communicate, the brain does itself. It memorizes the all of we need. That's what it made for.

Wow! I really enjoyed this video. And you made a completely amazing point "Language is not an academic subject, it's a tool of communication". I sometimes feel what those guys on the Redit had experienced. I've felt discouraged to learning language and at that time i was thinking that i couldn't make it. But, then I watched a Ted Talk speech about language, and the lessons in the speech were really different compared to what i learn at school. I got my motivation back.
