Why Planes Don't Fly Over Himalayas

Wouldn't it be amazing to see the tallest mountain on the planet from an airplane window? Just imagine yourself nestled in your seat, sipping on a coffee and admiring that snow covered mountain peak! The only problem is that planes don’t fly over Mount Everest, or the Himalayan range, for that matter. But why?
Let's imagine a scheduled commercial flight that decides to fly over the Himalayas. At first, the flight is going smoothly: the plane reaches its usual cruising altitude of 35,000 feet and is traveling at a speed of about 550 miles per hour. Soon, the pilots see a range of tall mountains straight ahead, with one peak standing out among the rest. It's the world-famous Everest - the highest mountain above sea level on the whole planet! The pilots realize they shouldn't have been so careless! Because that's when everything goes awry!

The most dangerous airports in the world 😱

- There are only 8 pilots in the world who can land here 5:18
- Right on the shore of the ocean 5:41
- When the runway is constantly covered with ice 6:24
- When the main street intersects the runway 7:10
- When a public beach is located right before the runway 7:48
#himalayas #whyplanes #brightside
SUMMARY:
- There isn't as much oxygen in your mask as you might think. It usually lasts for no more than 15 to 20 minutes. The pilots must make the plane drop down to 10,000 feet, where the passengers will be able to breathe without using oxygen masks. But... the plane is still flying over the Himalayas, and there’s no way it could drop so low!
- One of the reasons planes have such an impressive cruising altitude is that it lets pilots have some "room for error." It means that if something goes wrong, the captain can glide the aircraft while trying to fix the problem.
- Kathmandu can deal with a jet, but this airport has only one runway and doesn't have an instrumental landing system.
- Winds moving over mountain ranges at high speeds create so-called "mountain waves" which can turn any ride into a rough one.
- The turbulence there is so bad that it's almost impossible for commercial airplanes to fly over that region.
- The Lukla Airport in Nepal is one of the world's trickiest. Pilots find it extremely difficult to land there because the airport is nestled between high mountains.
- In Toncontin Airport in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, planes must make a lightning-fast 45-degree bank turn during the descent. -
- There are only 8 pilots in the world who are qualified to land at Paro Airport in Bhutan, Himalayan Mountains.
- Landing at the airport on the Portuguese island, Madeira, remains one of the most treacherous feats in aviation, even after its runway was renovated. The thing is that the landing strip of this airport is located right on the shore of the ocean, between steep cliffs.
- The runway of Narsarsuaq Airport, in Greenland, is constantly covered with ice.
- There is one feature that sets Gibraltar International Airport apart and makes it totally unique: the main street of that area, Winston Churchill Avenue, intersects the runway!
- If you ever go to St. Maarten Island in the Caribbean, you're likely to be completely smitten with its Princess Juliana Airport. It's one of the most famous airports in the world, thanks to a public beach located right before the runway!

Actually, an international flight from the west coast of the USA to Nepal flew over the Himalaya -- more precisely the Lhasa to Kathamandu leg. It's a common route and the views are jaw-dropping. Additionally, on almost every day of the year, sightseeing flights depart f rom Kathmandu that offer up-close views of Everest and the stretch of skyscraping Himalaya between Kathmandu and Everest before returning to Kathmandu.

@chhimidorji8846
@chhimidorji8846 4 года назад
Yes sir, Drukair doesn't fly over the ranges, rather parallel track along its southern foothills. To fly over the ranges, Oxygen requirements and special training procedures need to proven to the Aviation Authorities prior approving such flights. In the winter months, crossing the range can cause severe to extreme turbulence due to mountain waves and eddies!

I think the name of this video must be "Why to avoid the flights over Himalayas" as there are companies who do fly over. I was using planes a lot even 4 times per day sometimes as it was needed for my job and never was afraid but after that time when I returned with Lufthansa from Hong Kong and went into horrible turbulence and it was the flight over Himalayas! After that time I have panic even when I have to think about going by plane. Now is 13 years that I can't fly just because that flight. I am totally agree that if it is possible avoid taking the flight over Himalayas except if you are turbulence fan.

My turbulence story: My family was flying to Denver for a ski trip and we were hit with bad turbulence. We’d drop 15 to 20 feet in some cases. I was a bit of a joker and had my hands up and yelled WEEEE like I was on a roller coaster. My brother beside and everyone on else on the plane didn’t appreciate it. P.s. I’m wasted right now so no promise that everything is concise... or correct...

Well, there is nothing whatsoever you can do with turbulence as a passenger. Why not just enjoy it? It should help others relax and reduce your own stress levels! I remember being on a horrible flight where it dropped several times, people were crying and screaming. I simply carried on reading my book. Determined to distract myself from what was going on. When we landed, several people were traumatised, whereas because I had kept my mind distracted, just thought of it as a normal flight.
@James-cu9ul

Dropping 15-20 feet is nothing. I talked to a pilot who told me, on one occasion, the plane he was flying dropped 15,000 feet in three jolts. Bam Bam BAM! The first was 6000, the next 6000, the next 3000. He said the plane kept right on flying with no problem. Yikes. THAT'S something to be glad not to experience.

Two things. There are flights between Kathmandu and Lhasa and second you can still get a glimpse of very tall mountains on regular flights in Nepal as well as India as they routinely fly alongside them. However, most flights take a southernly or northernly route and avoid the Himalayas. I was on a Lhasa to Kathmandu flight and the experience was amazing.

From a Kathmandu to Paro, Bhutan flight you can spot Mt.Everest and planes do fly over icy mountains not over Everest though. But only captain level officers are permitted to fly planes on this route. They don't below the mountain but beside it. And when I say beside again it's actually far but visible.

Some planes do fly over the Himalayas, and they are equipped with extra oxygen tanks beneath the cabin to accommodate for sudden decompression.

"There are no mountains around Gibraltar Int. Airport"... Yeah, maybe if you're blind, since the very name Gibraltar comes from the 1400 ft mountain right beside the airport, the turbulence of which often makes landings impossible!

The Delhi to Guwahati route (pick an A seat) lets you see, the Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri, Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga and several other 7000m+ Bhutan peaks. I have photographed all these pics from an airplane window. On the Srinagar to Leh route (pick an F seat) lets you see Gasherbrum II, Broad Peak and even K2 on a very clear day. I have photographed them all. So yes, no planes fly over the Himalayas because there are no airports near that vicinity. So no need for planes to fly over them.

6:10 You forgot to mention to most important detail. The whole airport sits on a slope ravaged usually by heavy cross winds. Pilots need special certification to land at that airport.

Before I watched this video: because the Himalayas are full of mountains including the tallest one (Mount Everest) and if an emergency landing is required, the plane would just crash land possibly killing everyone on board. Also if the plane loses pressure, the plane would have to go down to 10,000 feet. The Himalayas are taller than that on average meaning that if this happened, then all passengers would lose consciousness after 15 minutes even if they are wearing oxygen masks. There are also no airports or runways for this reason aswell
@spdaltid

If depressurisation occurs over high terrain, the aircraft can follow a pre-determined escape route to an area which will enable further descent to a safe altitude. Fitting extra 02 bottles can allow an extended time period of 30+mins. Example: Air route B346 crosses the Himalayas just west of Kangchenjunga which is the 3rd highest mountain on Earth....
