We Never Want To See Our Planting Wilting. Its drastic, its dramatic, and it feels like they are at deaths door. And while they most certainly can be, all is not lost. Wilting is a common life strategy by plants. A physiological response to losing more water than they can uptake to replace it.
In today's quickie we'll look a the causes of wilting, plus we'll bring a couple plants back from the brink to show you just how reversible it is, if caught early enough!
It feels just like yesterday I started this series. Garden Quickies are hyper-focused 2 minute videos that tackle the most pressing growing questions of the day. I've compiled an entire playlist of them here, check it out!: • Garden Quickies

My garden is in containers. Cucumber plant was wilting even being watered twice a day. It's been upper 90's for weeks. I placed a short garden chair in front of it to reduce the afternoon sun hitting the container itself but the chair still allows the leaves to get the sun. Hasnt wilted since 😁

I’ve had the same exact issue. We splurged and bought shade cloth.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms

Hi, if the water isn't taking and its in a pot or container, try watering from below. Let the plant soak for 2-4 hours and really absorb all it can. That way you also aren't flushing out nutrients and goodness. :-)

@basilbaby7678
@basilbaby7678 2 года назад
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms, our plants are faced towards our house, so we bought cheap siding clips to hook the cloth grommets to. That way we can just roll the cloth down and over the plants, when the sun and heat are too much. We anchor the excess to the ground with small pavers, or decent sized rocks. I’ve seen a few YT videos, and blogs about the various ways you can drape, or tent shade cloth. Many people use cattle stakes, but if I had the room…I’d choose to make a wire tunnel arch, or something tall and arched. Different ideas, for different needs.

I do agree with some of this..but I don't feel it addressed the issue fully. Wilting isn't always a bad thing nor is it always a sign a plant needs water. Plants have adapted to wilt in order to reduce water loss in high temps. These plants will typically perk back up when the sun goes down or by morning. If that hasn't occurred...THEN I would consider providing water.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms

Yup, and they can also wilt when there is TOO MUCH water and temps that are cool. Only so much I can cover in 2 minutes...

I live in north FL. Out of 7 tomato plants I've had 3 die in spite of my best efforts to save them and 2 more have collapsed and are barely hanging in. Our garlic plants have disappeared.We have had such extreme heat since May that it looks like a losing battle. We water them and spray the plants but I will be fortunate if I get 6 tomatoes out if the entire garden. I planted them from seed and they were 3 feet tall when the heat got them. I didn't have this problem last year. So discouraging.
@yellowbird5411
@yellowbird5411 2 года назад
It seems that many people are having this problem this summer. A new phenomenon that some say are due to the increased radiation plants are getting from the sun right now. Some plants are affected, while others are not. One day they are fine and the next day they are not, regardless of how much you water. Even trees, especially fruit trees, seem to be hit hard, with almost overnight yellowing of the leaves. A few videos are addressing this right now on RU-vid. Whole corn crops are being decimated. One term that was put out was "flash drought," where the sun's intensity is killing plants from the top down quickly. I had to move my container plants into the shade/partial shade, as everything was drooping badly by 10am. I knew it wasn't lack of water, as I would feel the soil and it was moist. I looked up shade cloths for bigger areas and found they make different percentages of shade cloth, one of the most popular is 80%. Attached with bungee cords they let the air through, so they don't tear loose. They are a tad pricey, but they are probably worth it as they can be used season after season. Perhaps regular fabric could also be used, but it might pull loose. So disappointing.

I just saw one of many flowers on my eggplant dropped today. The UV rays have been super high here.....even made me sick for a few days whilst I was eagerly tending my garden & pulling thistles. I'm going to start watering all my plants through the plastic bottles that are close by & about 5" buried below the soil. I've been top watering them & we had a good rain last wknd. I'm thinking it's just been too dry to penetrate the soil. Also, I love how you just get into business with no ums & ohs. It's so common these days & I often query if the vlogger even realizes how much time is wasted. Have a blessed rest of your day & week. Cheers, ~ Covah
