For today's review we're looking at Doom's PS1 port, know as Playstation Doom or PSX Doom and developed in 1995 by Midway Games, which is far more than a simple straight port of the PC original, containing both The Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 in one package, but is it any good?

It's amazing how much a change in audio direction can completely alter the feel of a game. Seeing Doom without that iconic soundtrack is very unsettling.

That and the lighting. Plus worse graphics somehow make it more spooky as you have harder time seeing creatures coming from you from dark corridors 🙈 I love PSX Doom, it's different but it's a great addition. Like having Doom but with sourcream instead of regular BBQ sauce

It was a great port except for a few flaws - slower enemies and projectiles than the PC namely, nightmare mode even without re spawning monsters is left out, the archvile could have been included in a few maps where it's mostly only them [due to memory constraints].

I've been playing Doom since 1995 and was active on the doom online community and modding scene throughout all of the early 2000's and I have to admit, I only recently bought Doom on Playstation and dear lord did I think Doom couldn't get any better. I grew up playing playstation but never thought of getting Doom since I already had it on PC. I never thought there would be any differences, but man was I completely wrong. Played it on game pass for the first time in decades recently and had a good time with it, just out of curiosity I then hooked up the PS1 version which I've had for a very long time to see the differences, I was expecting to find just some dated control layout and low res graphics but what I got absolutely haunted me. the feeling of loneliness and isolation and spookiness of the PS1 version compared to the game pass version is chilling, the PS1 version feels like a Sci fi horror game like dead space where the game pass version feels like a disco shooting gallery on Mars, the difference a soundtrack can make (as well as dated control layout and low res visuals)

Hell Gate is a consequence of the Ps1 Doom being a port of the Jaugar Doom with the bosses readded. Tower Of Babel (console) is exclusive to PS1 and Saturn due to that. Saturn Doom is a port of PS1. Its also why Thy Flesh Consumed Onwards Levels tend to be more similair to PC.

The tried and true "Jaguar Version". I love this version! The pros definitely outweigh the cons of cutdown levels and a few final bosses taken out. I'd like to believe there has to be a custom .wad out there that is full PC version, but with the PSX's ambient lighting. Be that as it may, this definitely holds a place in my heart of MUST HAVE Playstation 1 games along with Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot and Twisted Metal 2. Didn't know about a password generator! That's cool! For curiosities sake, the password system is compatible across both the PSX and Saturn version of the games. i.e. play through playstation at home, jot done the password, go to your friend's house and continue on his SEGA Saturn.

This is the Doom I grew up on, and was amazed at how the original (played on the XB1) felt almost "happy-go-lucky" with the original soundtrack I wasn't aware until I played the original how much story there was because of the missing tidbits of story and some missing levels, nor how relatively smoothly it ran With all that said, the PS1 version is a darker form of the game thanks to the soundtrack and SFX in my opinion, and I love both equally, PS1 Doom is scary and fun, Original Doom is exciting and fun. Thanks for an interesting video!

@@eightcoins4401 Yes, Jaguar Doom code, and its edited-down mapset, found their way into many ports back in the day. I think a big reason the Doom 2 portion of Playstation Doom doesn't stand out well is because the horror feel of Playstation Doom doesn't work as well with Doom 2's maps. Doom 1's maps are more cramped and have innately scarier environments, what with you being in a moon's abandoned space station, then in another moon's space station that is being taken over by hell, and then you go into hell itself, which gets amplified with Playstation Doom's music, sounds, the colored lighting, and the fire sky in the hell levels. Doom 2 on the other hand has larger and more action-based maps that take place in just drab environments that don't mesh well with the horror feel, while Doom 2's hell levels don't really feel like you're in hell for the most part, especially with them not getting the fire sky (and also not having The Spirit World and The Living End, the two most hell-like maps in Doom 2). Another issue is that due to the Playstation's RAM limitations, each map could only have a limited variety of enemies, with more complicated enemies taking up more of that "variety space". This didn't really affect the Ultimate Doom maps, as the Doom 1 bestiary (aside from the Cyberdemon and Mastermind) were simpler and so they could use all the enemies the original maps did while having room to throw in a Doom 2 enemy or two. Much of Doom 2 maps however were designed containing a wide assortment of its expanded and more complicated bestiary, so in the transition to Playstation Doom the enemy variety had to be significantly pared down in most maps, thus making the maps feel more like direct downgrades and overall not playing as well since those maps were designed with having those now-missing enemies in mind. For example the original Monster Condo contained every enemy within the game except for Cacodemon, the Cyberdemon, and Mastermind, but in the transition to Playstation Doom, in addition to the obvious loss of the Archvile, the map lost its Chaingunners, its Pain Elementals, its Arachnotrons, its Baron, and the Mancubi you pointed out in the video. Playstation Doom tried to compensate by putting more Shotgunners, Pinkies, Lost Souls, Hell Knights, and a few Nightmare Spectres in the map, but they of course don't live up to the gameplay and challenge offered by the original enemy placement.
@Vakantscull
@Vakantscull 3 года назад
Couldn't agree more! I know I didn't make too big a deal out of it but as a Doom veteran, there were a few enemy replacements that felt as though they cheapened the challenge and overall experience, and they were almost always replaced with hell knights. Monster Condo is one example but the worst in my mind is Perfect Hatred, replacing the Plasma/Baron ambush AND the Cyberdemon with HKs. I understand the trick behind the Cyberdemon and that it isn't really a challenge as such, but telefragging a hell knight isn't nearly as satisfying

I would have liked to have seen this version with affine texture mapping and the necessary subdivisions that the PS1 used to hide its warping artifacts. The Atari Jaguar version, the first console port, used the affine technique, owing to the insistence of John Carmack, who unfortunately was more concerned with preserving the PC versions' clarity than maintaining a high frame rate. Every port that followed--minus the SNES, which had a proprietary engine, and Doom 64, which had much better rendering--had the same issue, which is why nearly every port struggled in terms of frame rate.
@Vakantscull
@Vakantscull 3 года назад
I always thought it was the Saturn version that John Carmack vetoed the hardware acceleration in favour of software rendering, either way I totally agree it would have been nice to see how a faster and smoother (if a little uglier) version would have held up :)

they need to rerelease these on PS4/5. they've done Twisted Metal, RR4 and other great PS1 games but never these. (plus Critical Depth please) I still have my original boxed copies complete with the cheats written on little cards & tucked inside. If you've never played them it's well worth it..the lighting & atmosphere are really unearthly. even when I finally played the PC Doom games I still think these PS1 versions are my favourites..😊🐹

First video I’ve watched of yours and it’s amazing! You have a new subscriber. I got PS1 Doom in January, 1996. I’d previously played the first Doom on my cousin’s 486 that played the sound effects but not the music. So when I played this version, I noticed the lighting changes but just assumed that this music was the same as the PC version. To me, Doom is a horror action game and Aubrey Hodges’ soundtrack just fits. I don’t have a PC so I’m hoping they had the PS1 Doom to the add-ons for PS4 Doom or even release it on its own. I’d buy it instantly.

it's....different, depends on how adaptable you are to pre analogue console fps games, mechanics wise I'd say its more balanced than pc doom, but then I have caught some flack for praising it on its own merits from certain die hard fans.

I honestly don't way which version of Doom I experienced first (I know it wasn't since we didn't have one), but we (my brothers and I) had an N64 and a PlayStation. I want to say it was on N64, but could be wrong. Either way, based on the Quake video I'm really curious now how the graphics compare from the PC to the port.
@Vakantscull

its actually surprising how little was lost graphically from the pc version, of course the image is never going to be as sharp as on pc, but for a comparison I do have a stream playlist where I'm going through the whole doom series which started with the first game :)

Bit late in the game here, but you mention it runs slower, however, like me, I bet you're playing the PAL version, which simply slows the game down to 50fps (or maybe even 25), whereas the NTSC version runs it at 60fps (or possibly 30). Playing the NTSC version on an emulator feels a lot smoother, it's also possible to run the PAL version at NTSC frame rates in emulators or by using some magic software on FreeMcBoot on a PS2 (which the name escapes me at the moment)

Doom 2 monsters and weapons is enough to make me try PS1 doom, but knowing weapons carry over between episodes takes it to a must play. To this day I struggle in the early stages of episode 2 as I claw my inventory back up to what it was. But episode 3 and 4 are slogs that my patience never wins over so I've not finished them without cheats. - Sweaty Rob (on his personal account)

I recently played the original PC versions of D1 & D2 for the first time and although I loved them, I just couldn't get into the soundtrack and the somewhat comical monster sounds. Doesn't fit the mood and very repetitive. I am however a little biased towards ambient music in general though. I'm currently playing PSX Doom CE for PC and I'm having a blast with it! The visuals are stunning, the gameplay is fast and smooth and there's tons of options and features to mess with.

My dear good sir, those passwords don't represent your actual stats pretty much unless you leave the level with full health, armor and ammo since they all get rounded UPWARDS if necessary to reach a certain pre-set value it goes to. Thus immediately password loading when getting into a new map may give the player a slight advantage. There's a FAQ online for more infos. And then there's PS1 Final Doom, which uses these exact same passwords...
@Vakantscull
@Vakantscull 2 года назад
well it was either generate the password based on the stats I finished the last playable level with (which felt like the fairest option over using one provided by gamefaqs that would give me even more of an advantage) or just not play anymore of Doom 1 because it wouldn't load, but thanks for the information on the deeper mechanics of the password system. Also, I don't own Final Doom on PS1 and don't really plan on getting it because of how much is apparently missing from it, so seems pointless when I've got the full experience on PC.
@PSXDRIVERPLAYERBSTH
@PSXDRIVERPLAYERBSTH 2 года назад
Recently got the PS1 Final Doom and yeah, have to say it's a bit lacking, but the PS1 mouse support with that was interesting, but it imitates the original MS-DOS experience with one a bit too much. Except that one can get any function to any mouse key in PS1 side. There's this one major annoyance - the back side of the European box gives you the impression that the disc contains 32 + 32 levels (since it says "It's Doom with two new 32-level stories"), when really, is only 30 levels. To say it like the stats screen would over at PC side, "BACK COVER SUCKS".

It’s been a minute since I played ps doom. But the only way I played it was link up with a friend co op. Wasn’t doom and doom 2 mixed in with each other that way? I vaguely remember having the super shotgun on doom one levels. Something like 54 stages consecutively?
@Vakantscull

yup, playstation doom had Doom 1 & 2 packaged in, though, and even though they added Doom 2 enemies in the first games levels the super shotgun was only found near the end in a secret level unless you used cheats :)
