The PC games people actually play may not require a GPU upgrade, given that they are on average 10 years old.

@@CallMeTeciHonestly, as someone who can definitely afford a high-end PC with a few months worth of savings, no? My backlog is full of years old games I've never gotten around to experiencing, and for most modern releases I find that a console is generally good enough. The ratio of how costly the upgrade would be compared to how much of a better experience it would present is so hilariously high I'd rather save that money towards something genuinely useful.

@@CallMeTeci People think everyone obligatorily wants to play the latest, biggest, AAA game and max it out , but most people don't. Most people play a lot more casually, they already have their old favorites, that are not demanding. Like, even handhelds sell for a reason. They aren't all cheap. Why would they do that if everyone could just go buy a shiny 80 series or 90 card? Everyone wants that right? A whole lot people only play FPS, maybe genshin, rocket league, Overwatch, WoW,FF14, Helldivers etc. These are very popular games. But don't require any major GPU to splurge on. You couldn't squeeze out more performance if you wanted to beyond a very monetarily reasonable point. 90% of people probably don't even think about 4k.

Buying flagship is overrated and always has been. People do it for bragging rights and usually over period of time it’s better value to buy mid end/higher mid end and upgrade sooner. Unless nvidia will change the scheme, which is a possibility. Then look at people who got 3090, 2 years later equaled by 4070S for 599€. - 2080Ti equaled by RTX 3060Ti for half price - 1080Ti was an exception and still due to DLSS you can say down the line it was equaled by RTX 2070 - 980Ti was equaled by 1070 for half price Going by this standard there is no chance that 5080 will not at least equal 4090 for a lot lower price. Going by old standard 5070 should come close to 4090. I rarely upgrade the platform, gone from Intel 4770K to Ryzen 2600 and then 5600. But instead buy GPU more often, actually every gen to sell the GPU while it’s still worth something. So RTX 770, gtx 970, gtx 1060 6GB, RTX 2080, RTX 3060Ti, RTX 4070. The upgrade cost me usually 100-300€ every 2 year. Instead of shelling out the whole amount for new pc every time. When I got 2600 I did not expect to still be running AM4 and here we are Ryzen 5600 will still be good for me until AM5 will become more affordable! Heck maybe even until AM6. This should last me for a while, meanwhile when I hit 4090 performance with next generation of 80 cards of GPU I am debating even upgrading ever again. As this will let me play 4K 100fps.

Well, lots of them do it's just that that middle ground are also the people who buy all their games on pre-order at full price with bonuses and pay for cosmetics. Yeah the vast majority of people really don't care to dump thousands of $$$ to run Alan Wake 2 at 1080p. I'm included in that group. Of my pc won't be able to run it, I'm not gonna run out and finance a $1500 pc just to play the latest handful of games I can't run. If I can't run it, oh well. I'm not very well off financially, I get by. But just barely, constantly on the verge of poverty and I'm sure I'm the more common case in the US over the people who have the money to dump into a brand new flagship GPU ever year. If game companies want to make money, they'll make sure their games run on the old hardware, that's the majority. If they don't care about sales, then by all means keep pumping out Alan Wake 2 games with minimum specs being $1200 in hardware.

The problem is that the 1% of people who can afford high end rigs far outweigh the 99% who don't put as much money into the hobby thus creating more profit for companies. If you play at 1080p you don't need an expensive card. The RX 6700 XT is years old at this point. It's available for cheap and the RX 6750 XT is a refresh of the same card and it's also cheap. When you adjust for inflation the RX 6700 XT is similar in price to the GTX 1660 Super when it released. It was a bad card at release and had bad 1% lows ie RDR2 had 50 FPS dips in Valentine and St. Dennis. At the end of the day everything you typed is an excuse to not spend money. At a low res at you are you don't need to break the bank to play games at acceptable frame rates. When I played Alan Wake 2 I had an RX 6700 XT and used FSR at Balanced and it ran very well and was a fantastic experience. Now is the time for people to upgrade if they haven't yet. That door swings both ways. Enthusiasts that care about high end hardware and performance also don't care about archaic 1080p. I haven't been on 1080p for over a decade. Then you have to account that most people don't upgrade their display that often, as well as the fact that many laptops even sold _today_ are still 1080p, and laptops take up a huge chunk of PC sales. Then you also have to account for the "most popular" games have a lot of their popularity because they're _FREE_ and that might be all they can afford. Obviously that gamer isn't the target market for new GPUs to begin with. Pretty much every statistic when it comes to gaming and gaming hardware needs an asterisk next to it depending on if they're an enthusiast, laptop user, budget, and choice of game. 3060 is horrible card, that only 16% more powerful than 2060, 4060, the most hated card is 18% faster than 3060, and perfom near to 3060ti(actually 4060 is a lot more closer to 3060ti than to 3060), 3060ti also has 8gb vram but still a lot faster than 3060. 3060 perform like 2060 super(that means it's vram isn't helping it, and 8gb vram card like 2060 super still perform that same as 3060, even though 3060 has more vram- cause more vram of 3060 doesn't help it get more fps, and when 3060 utilize more than 8gb vram it still gets unplayable fps). In 99% scenarios 3060ti is a lot faster than 3060, and therefore the 4060 that performs almost the same as 3060ti, is in 99% scenarios a lot faster than 3060. Also 4060 has frame generation, something that can double your performance. Bye bye 3060.

Follows the meme of "Buys a 4090, mainly plays 10+ year old games". The group I raid with in FFXIV two bought 3090s, but mostly played older games and FFXIV. Hell I bought a 7900 XTX last year and mostly player older games. It isn't that none of us play newer games on our PCs, the games we are interested in aren't the big AAA junk that mostly gets released now. When reviewing new GPUs, you need to push them to their limits. Otherwise it would be the older games and easy to run esports titles. It is fun to see Rainbow Six Siege getting over 600 FPS, doesn't mean much of anything honestly. I think GPU reviews are great for showing what *can* be done and are good for the information they provide. I think they mean more at the low end through mid range stuff, whatever that means now.

The best thing about using a 4090 to play old games is that you get nice smooth performance with a flat frametime graph, high fps even after maxing out the graphics and the fans barely even spin since it's so much more efficient and powerful than older cards. I had a 2060 it honestly detracted from my immersion when playing games because it was so loud and so hot, reviewers don't really talk about that stuff but going from that to what I have now has been well worth it, and if I feel like playing AAA stuff I know my PC won't struggle.

I changed my 970 to 4070 mainly beacuse I started video editing as a hobby. And first games I played with this card was some undemanding indie games. If it was not for video editing I would go with 3060 12gb for sure. Most of this new demanding games are either fast action games I don't play or mainstream games that are for me much less fun than games I played 15 years ago.

Influencers are a little out of touch due to all the free samples they get. $400-800 "mid-range" is insane and that is why no one cares about GPU's anymore. If it plays most popular games that's enough for most people as money doesn't grow on trees and gaming is a want and not a need.

That seems to be the sheeple perspective. Let me ask you a question, if a vehicle is greatly improved over the previous year, should it be expected to stay the same price? Daniel Owen did a video on this how the 4090 was only $100 over the 3090 and yet produced a 60% increase in raster performance (completely subtracting any additional features engineers had to develop like FG), yet sheeple said "over priced!". The only legitimate argument was the original 4080 at $1200 being that it had less than 60% of the CUDA cores, tensor cores, and RT cores of the 4090, yet was 75% of the price. This was eventually corrected with the 4080 S which completely balanced the adjustment with the 4090 correctly. Problem with GPUs is, everyone wants improvements without any price increases. It is simply not realistic in any other area to expect more for the same price. If they add 60% more to a vehicle, you are going to pay for it. It isn't free

Our whole financial system is really built around us wanting the "latest and greatest". We would like to think that we are not influenced or affected by internet media. We would like to believe that we are in control, but in most cases we are exploited and influenced by marketing tactics. We could actually just stop consuming new tech and be happy with what we have. I mean, there's objectively SO many fantastic games on the market today that we could easily keep ourselves occupied for the rest of our lives if we wanted to, but the whole consumerism apparatus within our capitalistic system make us believe that we always need to chase the "next big thing". Keep in mind that the US isn't really representative of the rest of the world due to how much purchasing power people have. Sure, living can be REALLY expensive there, but consumption in comparison is relatively cheap. In most other places it's the other way around, living is cheap but consumption is expensive (or everything is just super expensive). With that being said there's a whole hardware industry in China which caters to less fortunate markets where they create brand new "legacy motherboards" and selling them as a kit with re-purposed CPUs and memory modules. I bought a brand new B75 motherboard that had a modern 4x nvme slot (which didn't exist at the time), a Core i5 3570 and 16GB DDR3 for 58$. I added a GTX1060, a 512GB nvme I had laying around. This became my partners "brand new" gaming rig. :) It's running Manjaro (Linux) and the whole desktop experience feels (dare I say it?) snappier than most modern powerful Windows setups due to how incredibly efficient the OS is. The gaming performance is more than enough to play the games she enjoys to play (like The Sims 4, Tetris Effect, Stardew Valley, Overcooked 2, Ultimate Chicken Horse, Retro emulation etc.) She would never be able to tell a difference between her computer and a modern rig either. It's functional, it does everything she needs it too, and I promise you, she will keep this machine for 10+ years if nothing drastically happen to legacy CPU compatibility in Linux.

One suggestion, highly moddable games, mods can greatly up the requirements of a title. Where without mods the title might cap at 1440p textures but a mod might push it to 4k textures. Not just pushing textures but but improving the AI. After even a few mods will almost double the requirements of an older title. If not triple with things added like more post processing effects not even present otherwise. Bethesda titles are big for that. Cities Skylines isn't new, but even unmodded can really hammer requirements once you get a larger city going and again with the mods pushing those higher.

You should also take into account, that most people are still on 1080p screens, and you don't need a lot for that(they also don't use RT) this means a 3060 ti & 3070 will completely blast through 1080p and will be no problem for 3060 4060 even a 2060 is fine if you use DLSS Q with optimized settings. Also in the most played games chart are mostly MP games, cause heavy AAA SP games will be played only once after you finish the campaign, that's it and you won't play again soon, whereas MP games like Helldivers 2 or CS 2 or WZ are meant to be played as a live service, and you won't be bored that easily, cause it's not the same.

He doesn't play any new games, he doesn't care about modern hardware or upgrades, and he definitely doesn't care about raytracing. That PC plays all his games at 120fps amazingly. The most intensive games he plays are older games like Quake Champions and The Old Republic. Works for him and he's perfectly content. I have a close friend that has a Macbook for his school and professional work and a GTX 1050 Ti and i5-7400 for his gaming and editing. And guess what? He doesn't care. He can play Helldivers, Lethal Company, and Minecraft perfectly on that computer. My personal PC has a Ryzen 5 5700x and an RX 6600. I don't play new games. I do minimal video editing and digital art, and it works perfectly for me. Moral of the story: most people are content with what they have. Lots or people still play older games because most of the best games to ever play are already out and are probably very easy to run. Computer components are expensive and with how bad the economy is and the price of housing, there are definitely a lot better things to do with your money, and if you can save a couple bucks by playing older games with your friends or keeping that old socket 1151 PC for a little longer then by all means do it. It's a similar situation with cars. Most people don't care if their car is 6 months old or 6 years old as long as it gets them to the store. When a new model comes out with 30 more horsepower they don't care about buying it as long as what they have works fine. Although you could argue this is exactly _why_ AMD, Nvidia, and Intel need to court the enthusiast. Not only do we buy the most hardware and upgrade the most often, but when the average Joe that only replaces his PC every 10 years finally _does_ need new hardware they come to us for our recommendation, and that's been a _big_ part of what's given Ryzen a foothold in the CPU market, while Radeon hasn't done nearly as much to pull market share away from Nvidia.

At this point, it'a basically like getting all bent out of shape that your commuter car from 2023 has a top speed of 150 mph instead of 160 mph like the latest 2024 commuter car. If you build a PC system to achieve a certain high performance & quality threshold at any given resolution from the get-go, as long as you keep playing that resolution your PC won't become obsolete. My 2019 1080p PC still plays everything fine at 1080p today. My 2024 1440p PC will keep playing everything fine at 1440p for as long as I decide to keep it or until the hardware is no longer supported by drivers/software.

To be fair, the counts from LAN centers needs to be factored in because it is about how many people are playing with the specs of gaming rig, not the amount of people owning it so I personally thinks that it is totally relevant. And I also wanted to add in with why reviews should be done with a newer game, I would argue that the gamer would really wanna know the specs of their rig to target the in game performance they are looking for, the games might not be that popular now, but you will never know that it could be a Steam sales away or a sudden resurgence of interest from their favourite streamers streaming the game (like it is with Monster Hunter World) or maybe a new update/DLC/expansion release. And I definitely agree with most of the commenters that are saying that "I can play all my games at 120+ fps @ FHD with my 3060/3060 Ti", I believe that most of their game are most probably old (but still way more enjoyable than most new games) or targeting esports performance. Of course we don't want $400 8GB cards in 2024 but that segment of the market is so well serviced that realistically neither AMD or Nvidia can move the needle down there. I was rocking 1080p and a 3060 before that. I don’t really care about these newer single player games but wanted to future proof my setup so I don’t need to upgrade anymore

I do still play the new thing from time to time so i guess I need it, but like for years i just played Dead By Daylight and that games not demanding. Now it's Helldivers 2, which i feel you do need at least a mid end PC to enjoy. Not surprised though that the most popular ones are all MP games with years of service behind them. But like I wanna play STALKER later this year, and I bought DD2. I'd say my PC is around $1500, and i built it myself. I can't imagine buying a prebuilt ones price.

Old games are still fun to play. I still play Freespace 2, 25 years on. I still play Command & Conquer 3, over a decade on. I still play Borderlands 2, 9 years on. Yes, I have a RTX 4090 and it allows me to play them at 4k with everything cranked to the highest levels. But I think you're missing something: market segmentation (or, as Newzoo calls them, gaming-related target group). Single player vs multiple player. And, more subtly, co-op vs competitive. The more graphically gorgeous games (e.g. Elden Ring) tend to be single player. Perhaps this is also a wake-up call for you: who is your target audience? Beyond that, I would be very interested in seeing you discuss the statistics with Newzoo in such a way that your students (mid-teens if memory serves) - and thus we your viewers - can understand.

sometimes the reality are something that are not in the "spotlight". i saw some people talk how going forward developer will stop making PC games or not porting their games to PC because new hardware like GPU are getting more and more expensive. it will be the dead of PC gaming. or how thing like with 8GB VRAM you will be stuck at low setting only in a year or two even at 1080p. they see games like hogwarts or TLOU and see them use bajillion of VRAM and assume every game (including indie games) will be that demanding going forward. and yet here we are. i haven't seen yet where games that cannot start at all because it only have 8GB VRAM.

I think a good addon to this is yes, most people don't play the most demanding games but most of those cards can still play the most demanding games even if at lower graphical settings. I have a 2060 super and play everything I want including new games but as long as the games I play regularly perform well I am willing to have sacrifices in the very demanding games I don't play too often. This video kind of makes it seem like people with those GPUs don't play demanding games but they most likely do just not as much as other, more popular games.

resolution matters. most ppl are on 1080p displays, which a low end budget card will handle pretty much anything at that resolution. owners of big bad cards with hefty price tags are primarily going to be running 4k or high refresh 1440p displays, which require more brute force to handle all those pixels.

i think there is a level of people looking to buy a gpu and building their own pc are more likely to be specifically looking to do something relativley demading with it. The audience for individual gpus are pretty enthusiast in that respect. One thing that a lot of games in the top 10 list have in common is that the people playing them on pc often don't have a strong sense of what their hardware even is. Like minecraft, roblox, fortnite, league of legends, valorant, these are games that people will just play on computers they arlready own, they aren't games that necessarily require a dedicated gaming rig and so although a lot of people are playing them, they might not necessarily be represnatative of the gpu consumer base at least during the shopping experinece. Afterwards is a different story, personally i know a lot of people who buy a gaming pc to play the lastest games only to spend most of their time playing these older established titles. Whole lot of expensive gaming rigs out there almost exclusivley playing minecraft

There are also much more people than we think who don't upgrade for a long time, few of my friends had GPUs like 1060 and 1070 up until 2024. 40 series cards come in lower in charts because Steam is not as saturated with newer cards yet as it is with older

8:52 I actually don't think that makes sense, and your video here proved it. Buying the latest graphics technology is expensive, the latest games are far and few, only some will require current gen graphics to run smoothly, and even that's a stretch as I was thinking Cyberpunk 2077 which is not a new game anymore and I beat that game between 2 PCs that I had a RTX 2080 on one and a GTX 1660 Ti on another. The latter played just fine without RT, ultra 1080p getting average 45 fps. There are games like A Plague Tale Requiem that very hardware tasking as my ARC A770 struggled to get 50-60 fps at 1440p very high. , but then again a ARC A770 is like a 2070 Super in performance, so again not really necessary to have the latest GPU. Some new games like WWE 2K24 will work just fine on GPU tech from 2018 since its not moving the goal post of tech requirement on the console side making sure they keep PS4/Xbox One in the loop with PS5/XSX release, so these titles will be underwhelming on PC hardware. My 2019 built Ryzen 7 3700X paired with a RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary tuned is still my standard bearer for game compatibility at 1080p, I can still run any game I throw at it, albeit I did find myself running out of VRAM when it came to games like The Last of Us Part 2, Diablo 3 & Horizon Forbidden West at 1080p, but remarkably the games do not crash and instead just dulls down the textures.

I upgraded for those reasons: 1 My card was noisy 2 I saved for 2 years to have vision or aero gpu from gigabyte 3 I wanted more vram because I use rtx and dlss and I was actually reaching the limits in some of my games. Then I upgraded to a 4060ti 16g despite it’s a terrible value, because the 4070 was too expensive for me and was overkill for 1080p. Ofc we all want a 4090, but actually the 60 serie keeps being more popular because it’s decent enough and most people have other things to pay. Also having a big card and not using its full potential is a waste of precious resources. (It’s better to buy according to our needs and change later if the needs change)

I've been saying this for a few years now, upper midrange - high-end GPUs only make sense if you either play VR games or do other things than gaming with your GPU that benefit from more performance. (I mean yeah 4k, but I'm the kinda guy who always prefers 1440p with more fps over 4k). So these charts makes total sense. Most games don't need a crazy high end GPU and most people overspend when they build a PC. After all you can still totally enjoy most single player games with mid quality and stable 30fps. Meaning, the point where you really "have to" upgrade your GPU because a game won't even start or barely run at all is way way down the line.

I had a 1060 (Had it since December 2016) until January this year and upgraded to a 4070 Super. I didn't feel the need for a GPU that powerful but I wanted something that will last me a good while. If I had the 1060 for so long then the 4070 Super should hopefully last me at least as long. I have a 1080p 240hz monitor. I used DLDSR with DLSS if available to get a much sharper/cleaner image. In 5 years, my 4070S will be a 1080p card anyway. With the way games are advancing in graphics where software ray tracing might be the new Raster and Path tracing might be the new ray tracing... I do not expect current GPUs to last as long before feeling aged. Going with high end is not worth it. Ultra settings in most cases are not worth it. Buy something affordable for you right now. Then in roughly 3 years, try to sell it to claw some of that money back and hopefully you have saved up enough to buy the same tier GPU but latest gen. That is what I am going to do. Gonna skip the RTX 5000 series and wait for RTX 6000 to see if selling my GPU and buying a 6070 will be worth it

The reason why these unimpressive gpus are so prevalent is because a ton of people buy prebuilt systems and the prebuilders load them up with the gpus no one will buy off the shelf. Then the people who bought those systems never open the pc and just end up playing the games they are able to play on those systems. Making those games the most played.
