In the last of three videos, Literary Agents Jessica Faust and James McGowan are discussion why publishing takes so long, from querying, to selling your book, to production. Today: PUBLISHING & PRODUCTION.
****
Jessica Faust’s love for books is what first brought her to open BookEnds Literary Agency. It is her desire to be an advocate for all authors that pushed her to create her blog, the BookEnds RU-vid channel and to maintain a vibrant presence on Twitter.
Jessica is proud to have grown BookEnds to an agency that represents authors of all genres for children and adults, allowing her to reach more readers and help more authors and illustrators achieve their dreams.

Since interning at BookEnds as an undergrad in the summer of 2015, James has (basically) never left. He's just continuously level-up-ed inside of BookEnds. Now he is the Literary Assistant and Social Media Manager for the team. He’s been a reader since his mom gave him the first A Series of Unfortunate Events book and ordered the sequels regularly through Scholastic book orders.
James is currently growing his own list and is actively seeking submissions in adult literary and upmarket fiction, mystery, thrillers, and suspense. He is also actively building his picture book list.

Loved this - seeking even more info on the specifics of picture book publishing. Mixed in with the adult timeline I found it a little confusing but overall very helpful

Can you guys do a video on illustrations in middle grade novels? At what point do you mention you'd like illustrations? Who do you even bring it up to?

Wow. Now I know why I had to wait ages and ages for Pegasus to get back to me. And then day before yesterday everything exploded into action. I got an e-mail middle of the night with a publication date. The 29th of this actual month. September '22. (Pteridophyta 1, Abducted) Uff. And now I rush around like a headless chicken to get my webpage, newsletter and author's brand going. Ups. Is being an author always that chaotic? I think I really need an agent. Hi there, Naomi. Gotta some space still for a Fantasy novel about a grey witch? Adult female readers? I'll send you my query for that book when I've shoved it through Critique Circle. It's a different one from above said published one. Hope we're going to make a deal. See you.

these days it is impressive when a book gets published. the amount of work that has to go into it is truly daunting. that said I have found a number of books on shelves with simple writing mistakes that some how slipped through. as an author patients is your friend. Be thorough, you might catch something they missed because some publishers are way over worked if your editor has more than ten projects on their desk take the time to double check everything never try to rush the process. It never looks good for you to get a book on the shelf in 6 months if the book has not been properly edited and checked. Your fans will notice and point out mistakes. For instance in one of my favorite book series. I found where lose and loose were some how mixed up over looked repeatedly through the whole book and some how got through the editing process. The author was a friend of mine and we tease him about it constantly. Getting a line editor of your own and having beta readers can help reduce the amount of revisions you may have to do before you ever send in your query. love the video. once again bookends is providing tons of useful information. keep it going I cant wait to see what you cover next. hope you al have a great day.

I try to keep track of how I kill off characters (knife, poison, etc), but it's nice to know someone will be double-checking the evil method(s). TWO QUESTIONS: 1) Re: 'Illustrations' in WF: If you want an illustration of a map of the book's "world" at the beginning of the book (not a fantasy world, more like a revised "real" world), is that something to discuss w/an agent before submission? 2) Why do you have to wait so long before you can announce a book sale? Tx, again. These videos are priceless.

Thi is definitely something you and your agent will discuss with your editor. Also, it depends on the publisher, sometimes it's before a contract, sometimes it's after the contract, sometimes we'll hold the announcement while foreign and audio deals stack up then announce all at once! If you're writing a picture book, it's after the illustrator is chosen.

Question: what happens when during the initial edits with the editor, the writer and editor disagree about a change, major or minor? Is the writer simply at the mercy of the editor and whatever wholesale changes they may suggest? I assume an editor will have liked the book enough as it came in to not say “hey, love your manuscript, but we’re going to rewrite from page 1 into something completely different.”

Many of these discussions can happen before the sale is final, but also these things usually work themselves out. If they do not, your agent can step in and you both can figure things out together be it editorially or contractually.

Wow, that’s a long process. I had thought that picture books would take less time to publish in some ways because they are much shorter than other types of books. In the case of an author-illustrator, doing their own illustrations, could this potentially speed up the whole process, especially if they have already done a lot of the work on their illustrations, before submission?
@BookEndsLiterary
@BookEndsLiterary 3 года назад
It could potentially speed up the process, but it does depend on their schedule, and when the publisher slots the book in their schedule. Truth is picture books are typically bought on a two year schedule, regardless of author-illustrator

Geez, the process sounds like torture. I guess it explains why even career authors release so few books each year... although I imagine the process must be faster for self-publishing?
@BookEndsLiterary
@BookEndsLiterary 3 года назад
Sure, it may definitely be faster, but it is also without the team of professionals to do things for you! Self-publishing is all on you

I have a question. I had a very well-known agent interested in my book, he asked me to do some revisions, which I did, and then he shopped it around without signing me... Which I found kind of weird. He wasn't able to sell it and that ended any contact he had with me. Is this a common way to do things?
@BookEndsLiterary
@BookEndsLiterary 3 года назад
Absolutely not. Typically there is some sort of agreement put into place to protect you from this, and then you should be regularly communicated with and updated on the status of your project. There should also be something (your agency agreement) that outlines how you'd terminate said working arrangement.
