About Us:
We are a homeschool and homesteading family of 6 that farms our 1 acre permaculture organic acre in WA State. We are currently building off grid on our new 20 acre homestead in North Idaho. We garden, seed save, raise meat rabbits, raise chickens, process our own meat, save our own seed, can, bake, and do just about everything that we can ourselves to achieve a self sufficient and debt free life for our family.

My oldest child is allergic to chicken, when I found out that rabbit meat can be substituted for chicken in recipes, I started exploring this! Thank you for this video!
@AndreAndPetya

interesting, blood type B and AB are not suppose to eat chicken as the lectins (proteins) in chicken meat react with the person's blood antigens or immune system. Is your child by any chance any of these blood type groups?

I’m a vegan and I just made this same comment on another thread. Homesteaders live with a high degree of integrity imho. I’ve only seen one other vegan make a comment on this video though, and it was admittedly crazy. But I think most ethical vegans would prefer homesteading over factory farming. But maybe I’m biased 🤷‍♂️
@GoodSimpleLiving

Thank you for saying so, it's important to us. I will argue all day that our 1 animal a day for our family paired with our homegrown and hand picked vegetation is kinder to the environment, and kills less small animals than any vegan diet where they buy from the store.

There is a channel that is no longer active (it’s still up though) that was dedicated to educating others mostly on raising meat rabbits. The channel had to stop because the creator and his family were receiving death threats for posting the videos. It’s a shame that we as a society have become so privileged to the degree that common sense, common courtesy, and common knowledge are a rarity. As for those that bash you because of their believes, I’m glad you addressed their concerns. Especially in such a manner that doesn’t stir the emotional pot. It’s fact based and well presented. I look forward to the rest of the videos you have for us. This channel has easily become a source of critical thought provoking processes that are serving on my journey to become as self sustainable as possible.

don't forget, someone has to slaughter the animals. you may not be prepared for that. let me suggest something: buy a live chicken. take it home. slaughter it. eat it. if you just can't do that, don't get into rabbits. one way to slaughter chickens: tie their feet to a wire so they're hanging upside down. slice their necks, let the blood drain out. i think it's a good way because they can't run away. if you just chop his head off, they run all over the place for minutes.

All well said. Rabbit meat is a staple here. Using chicken broth in recipes takes care of the fat issue. The only other thing I can think of to add is the benefits of putting a worm bed under static cages. Worms will make use of the manure and urine to exponentially magnify the potential of the "waste". Reminds me of the time my parents took us (my brothers & I) back to "the old country" (Mexico) when we were teens back in the 70's. Just so happens that my dad's friend (also Mexican but from a small/mid sized city) had also come down & brought his only child (boy about 6-7yrs old). We are from a small rural farming community so ofc you'd be hard put to find ANY processed foods in those days. A very popular thing here in Mexico is to drink freshly drawn raw milk w/chocolate, sugar & a tiny amount of alcohol (to kill the bacteria). Anyway this child saw this & went ape-sht because all he'd ever known was milk in a plastic jug & totally refused to drink it claiming milk came from jugs not cows (face plant). His parents had to go all the way to Guadalajara City to buy enough processed milk for the month they'd be staying here LOL.

A farmer here in Vermont was processing about 400 NZ whites a month for local restaurants. I had gone to see him about a breeding pair but instead came home with a couple of hundred hides which he was just going to bury out in pasture because they were not worth his time and or trouble to process or bale. I used the hides to teach myself to tan hides. I did watch him process the rabbits which he could do in about 40 seconds per once he got his rhythm. Thanks the video was informative. No point in doing it myself since it would just be me eating the rabbits. My wife wouldnt eat them if she knew it was rabbit. I don't suffer such sentiment eaven though she does have a pet mini-rex whose nails I trim. Best of luck though.

Great presentation on raising "Meat" rabbits. There are many breeds of rabbits to raise including those that are better for meat production and those which are better for hair production. My favorite rabbit I've raised was New Zealand Whites for meat. When we moved to Sand Hollow Homestead we sold over 200 rabbits, with 40 working does. I had a large building for maintaining the rabbits and I sold the rabbit manure in feed bags for $3.00. I've fried breaded chicken and fried breaded chicken and folks could not tell the difference, but claimed the "chicken" was tender and great! :) I organized Meat Rabbit Growers Association of Idaho and maintained it for years until we moved. I did have lot's of articles to help folks with their rabbits, with pictures and detail. Now, I've retired from rabbits and only have a few chickens and ducks. If I rebuild a carport frame building I may start over with the intent to just raise meat for my family and not a pedigreed rabbit business. I look forward to all your videos and rabbits will be one of my favorite to follow! Thanks for sharing and educating homesteaders on the benefits of raising rabbits!

The cute factor was/is the biggest problem. Now everyone understands (hopefully). I was eating rabbit growing up (both side grandparents came from Germany and Sweden) and I loved it. And you are correct, 2 does and 1 buck can produce a lot of babies. I give my does 1 month pregnant, 3 months off preg (rest period), thus making a rotating litter every-other-month (when needed). I agree 100% with everything you are saying about raising rabbits for sustainable meat, especially with possible environmental extremes, warming or cooling, both are possible in the upcoming decades. The things that a cow will provide that humans need for long term survival is not protein but cholesteral, which is in every cell in the human body and fat, both of which keep the human brain functioning correctly.

Real farmers eat what they produce because they know where it comes from; no "cute factor, no mystery and no hype about staged cruelty from nut-bar vegans and animal rights people. With the exception of a few who pretend to be farmers and ranchers and treat their livestock poorly including unnatural growth chemicals, Real Farmers treat their animals like the valuable asset that they are and feed them on unsprayed, chemical-free grass. Too much toxic GMO corn and other grains are used to finish cows and other animals harming the food supply. Anyone who farms or gardens ought to know, well-rotted manure is fine for food gardens or fields (because winter slows the process, where we live a minimum of 2 years composting is necessary). Using it even close to "fresh" risks toxic contamination as you stated. We use the solid form of composted manure and top-dress generously every 2 years. After doing this for over 15 years, our garden and our hay fields are always heavy producing and the soil/turf is way better than those around us. We've never been sick and neither have any of our horses or cows. As far as "starvation" from rabbits goes, I agree that it is true IF all you were to eat was just the meat. You should also use the brain and other organs including the cleaned intestines as sausage casings (or mini chitlins - yumm)and not waste them. About the only things I do not use are the feet and eyes. Even the bones are used. They have added nutrients and fat necessary for good health. Couple that with a bunch of fresh or home-canned greens and you won't have to concern yourself with starvation. As with venison, I prepare the meat with a bit of lard or saved bacon fat for certain dishes. I am the proud son of european immigrants. We raised and ate rabbits and horse we got from an honest-to-goodness butcher. Locally raised was the norm back then and needs to be again. If you raise them on feed you've grown when possible, or get them from someone who does, not only do you have quality, unpoisoned food, but you have a stronger local economy and greater food security.

@Good Simple Living And Homesteading , As with other meats and especially wild meats , it depends upon what they have been eating. A squirrel from a pine forest just may taste like pine. I have a large very fat looking squirrel that runs up and down the oak tree in my backyard. It has been eating mostly acorns. Every now and then I wonder how it would taste in a squirrel stew ? But then , I also enjoy watching it run up and down my oak tree. And I put some chicken on the grill instead.

Hi there, I have never vaccinated our stock, and never had issues.if kept in a clean environment you shouldn't have any issues either. I wouldn't mess with wild rabbits. They carry disease and parasites, and tend to be extra lean. There are great domestic breeds, and a buck and doe quickly turn into 12!

You mean the health breakdown of wild rabbit? I do know they are mostly muscle, and the meat is darker, tougher, and leaner. The domestics are fattier, and the texture is softer. The rabbit starvation came from eating the wild hares.
@lenordvaughan5036

It is very unlikely that you would ever be able to keep while rabbits alive in a cage. I have on a couple of occasions gotten very young while rabbits and raised them on a bottle. Eventually, when they get about half grown, they will beat themselves to death trying to escape. They are very different from tame rabbits. In my opinion, they taste much better than tame rabbits. Although, I really like tame rabbits also. (I fried a large swamp rabbit and a tame rabbit at the same time. I could tell the difference in a taste test and I liked the swamp rabbit better.)

I raised meat rabbits for a few years. I enjoyed the meat a great deal. I was surprised in your video that you didn't mention rabbit liver. For those who do not know, rabbit liver has got to be the tastiest liver I have ever eaten. And given the animal's comparative size to a chicken, it's liver is at least twice the size of chicken liver, but more tender and sweeter. It is wonderful sauteed with onions and some brown gravy then served over rice. When I was raising them I usually mixed in the hearts and kidneys with the livers. DELISH! Another thing I liked to do was cut up small chunks of rear leg meat and batter fry them. I called them "bunny bites". My goal is to retire in a couple more years and get a small piece of land in the mountains and raise rabbits once again, along with a few chickens and a decent sized garden. The homestead lifestyle feels more natural to me and that's the way I want to live.

Thanks for the video! We raise rabbit meat for ourselves and to sell locally. Since we are a teaching farm, we also try to educate the public on why rabbit is a great add to their diet. We usually get 1 of 3 comments: 1. "I tried rabbit as a kid after I went hunting with my grandpa many years ago; it was tough and gamey", 2. "Rabbit is too expensive for me; that's what rich people eat", and 3. "I had a pet rabbit once and couldn't think of eating one". We can explain #1 and #2, but #3 is a hard sell. Raised rabbit meat is tasty, tender, and affordable (we sell for only $5/lb). And for a homesteader, you don't need a lot of freezer space since you are only processing one litter at a time, versus an entire pig or cow. We find rabbits are so much cheaper to raise than chickens, and unlike cornish cross, they don't die unexpectedly. Best wishes!

During WWII, my dad's family lived on a small family farm outside Chula Vista CA, the raised chickens and rabbits, and the neighbors raised the goats, cows and others grew the veggies. As you said, back in the 40's & 50's, that's how things were done back then! I fondly remember going to grandpa's place, until he sold it in the late 60's, and when it was dinner time, and the fry pan was full, just like your kids say, "is it chicken or rabbit?"...
