What is the Bhagavad Gita and what is its message? Why should we read it today? This video is a non-technical introduction to this singular classic of Indian literature and key text of the Hindu Tradition.

The Gita's whole message to me is "Intentions are our responsibility, results are God's." This gives a Meister Eckhart level of detachment, inner peace, and ultimately Enlightenment, Nirvana, Heaven.

As Vivekananda said about good and evil, "Use the gold chain to loosen the iron chain so you can unhook it, then throw away both and be free."

'Jnana' is pronounced as 'Nyaana' and not jaana

Thank you! Very helpful, both to me and other visitors here. I'll correct this in future.

That last slide is not true, we can act without any choice or thought, just watching it happen, completely free from all of life. As Nisargadatta said, the body for him is no longer a prison, he can come and go, his actions have nothing to do with him and they are all perfect for the good of all since love is his nature. He does not need to babysit the body or its actions. It is rare though.

@@labyrinthsideas Glad to help. I enjoy your videos so much and learn a great deal. On this one I couldn't watch you since I found the above issue a bit disconcerting. Of course, I did the obvious and didn't watch the images, just listened - but I thought I'd pass the info along to you.

@neil6477 good, yes, I’m glad the audio itself was listenable! I’ll be moving to a new studio soon, actually, so hopefully issues like this will be rarer. Nice to connect here!

I find the moral framework of the Gita highly problematic. You touched on why in your "If: Rudyard Kipling" video. Is the highest good is to do ones duty, thats varies highly from person, time and place, as evidenced by both the Nationalist and the Imperialist drawing inspiration or some level of justification from the same source. A moral system which is largely detached from considerations of the fruits of our actions is a dangerous thing indeed. It is the institutionalization of the mindset many Nazi's had that they were "just doing their job." Indeed, I almost hesistate to call it a moral system at all. It is more like the substitution of personal moral agency to the will of a state, an ideology or an ideal which supercedes it. I am by no means an expert. I'm certain there's more depth to it, but as I said, I think the moral philosophy of the Gita is highly problematic.

Actually no ,what Gita say is opposite , If Nazi people know that they are doing wrong and it kills them inside to do wrong things told by the gov. ,they should without any thought of consequences do what is right. It is about fearlessly waging war againsts you sufferings and limitations without thinking about material gains ,or gains which a doomed society attributes as nice ( like killing jews). If you know what is right ,guided by your suffering( not your pain but deep very deep suffering). You should work for that any cost without thinking of consequeces. Only if few hundred could do that, Nazism would have been self terminated by germans rather than alies.

I think it should be clarified that, what results shouldnt be thought of are the calculations you make about results , self delusional calculations, calculations supported by societal affirmations. Instead the moment of act either increases your suffering or reduces it, and that should be your compass about how to act. I can think of it like , if an guy goes to gym for 10 years not only his body transforms but content of his character also transforms, it means all discrete actions transforms you , even 1 simple action has transformed your character very minutely. Now what is suggested is to concentrate upon each action ,each moment depending upon suffering. Killing a person will also hurts you from inside ,if you are sensitive enough to notice rather than being submerged in pleasure or are ignorant .
