Ricky’s death hit hard because, he was a 17 year old. Not only that he was a father !! Not to mention, on the verge of graduating High School and going to college because he passed his SAT’s !!

Also, notice that Trey kept looking back and in front, plus he said to Ricky that hey should stay together. Trey clearly had his survival skills operating, which probably saved his life. Ricky was too naive to the danger around him, and paid the ultimate price.

Ricky simply wasn’t “built like that” he was coddled so much by his mom and honestly didn’t know anything about street life because Dough Boy was always there to stand up for him. Edit: Colors would be a great movie to cover 😏😉

Brenda: yes, please do a deep dive on her. Her attitude and emotions towards both brothers should be analyzed. Furious: remember, he is a real estate man. He already knew the what’s up and what was about to happen with the gentrification of the neighborhood. Also he may have received his house because that was all the money that was allowed with his military benefits, so that’s what he got.

It also shows how young these guys are. They're kids. They can't even think straight under the diress of Ricky being shot. Their first instinct should've been to throw him in the car and drive him to the hospital or call an ambulance. They threw him in the car and took his corpse home because home is our comfort our safe-haven where nothing can go wrong. In doing so, his mother, girlfriend, and son are now traumatized having seen his dead blood soaked body on the couch. It's all so sad.

I always wondered what this story would’ve been like if Tre never moved in with his father. Tre was the one who convinced Ricky to go to the strip where the altercation happened. If Tre never moved in with his father, there could’ve been a chance that Ricky could’ve made it out of the hood. Either college or the army.
@antoniobarnes694

I don’t think the answer is necessarily leaving the hood. You have to change the mind set and mentality of the people. Because even if the same people went to a different and better neighborhood they’d just drag it down with the same mind mentality in fact it happens all the time to good areas. Other races come into our communities and make a Fortune the Chinese the middle easterns the white man all these people coming in making money off our people. If we could convince our own to build in the hood and support each other it and take care of what we have it might not even be the hood anymore but it’ll be our community

@43:17...Obviously BNTH gets compared to M2S because they're the first two modern hood movies depicting gang life and they're both undeniable classics. HOWEVER, I think BNTH is in a class of its own. Menace was more romantic, focusing more on the individual character's personalities and styles. BNTH's main character was the hood itself, focusing on the trajectories set in motion by the interplay between the hood and the household (nature vs. nurture).

That scene with Ricky and Trey running from those blood gangbangers always gets me angry. Every time I watch that scene and Ricky tells Trey "they aren't going to do anything they're just showing out" I'm like then WTF are you running from then? It makes NO SENSE to me. Ricky grew up in that blood affiliated neighborhood. He should definitely be aware of the surroundings he grew up around especially having a brother like doughboy. You can't say he was innocent and sheltered because he was a teen dad so that's ruled out. The scarfing down of the ice cream scratching off that ticket and peeing had me heated. LOL His life was in great danger and he was so easily distracted. I personally think he just wasn't too bright. I mean after all he did get just 710 on his SATs. It's funny you mentioned Jessie Jackson. I grew up in South Central LA. I'll never forget when he came to my elementary school in 84, gave a speech and had the whole school chanting "I Am Somebody!" Didn't realize how powerful that was at the time. As for Ricky, I always felt like he wasn't too bright, but he didn't deserve to die. We had high hopes of him making it out the hood and it's just devastating when he doesn't. 😢 I lost my cousin in a driveby. I wanted to get out after that and I did when I left for college. If Doughboy was the older brother the fight is understandable. Even though Ricky was the athlete, Dough was the oldest and apparently the toughest of the two, and the older brother is usually the leader of the siblings so the younger one looks up to them and might not always be mentally prepared to fight with the older brother. Another reason why Dough got slapped, their mother also knew he was the tougher one.

The death of ricky hits hard cause nobody was expecting it to be ricky. He was expected to make it out. Ricky took things for granted cause it was always someone to take up for him from his mother to doughboy. Doughboy had a love hate for his brother. He loved him but also hated him cause of how ricky was treated like the golden boy by his mother and dough was treated like the black sheep. Doughboy was in shock but also cause of how he grew up seeing death at a young age kinda harden him. So seeing ricky laid out dead to him was like seeing what might have been an everyday thing in the hood. I think they rationalized taking him home was better than leaving him out in the middle of the hood waiting for the ambulance and the corner to pick him up. ( which could take a while) The mother was gonna blame doughboy no matter. She always blamed him cause he was the one who was supposed to protect ricky. (Sn: i think how she treated them had something to do with their dads cause i believe it was said in the flim; i could be wrong, that she loved ricky’s dad and wasnt in love with doughboys)

The actor that portrayed the character "Knucklehead #2" that shot Ricky got addicted to playing a killer and became a murderer in real life. Lloyd Avery II (the actor's name) ended up in prison and was murdered by his cell mate Kevin Roby in a satanic ritual.

You guys hit some really good points especially on the military. The military gave me direction and focus. Plus education (Bachelors/multiple tech schools, and certifications for free), experience, pension, 401K, and multiple homes and I really did travel all over world. Was it hard? Yes but I'm retiring soon. I remember people laughing and saying black men shouldn't join the military but I lived in Detroit. So I feel you guys on this.

Wow, yall are hitting some good points on this. One I wish I would have known you can join the Coast Gard cause that's military and you work in beach towns. Second, soo much of this breakdown shows soo many of the horrible issues we as blacks do to each other. IDGAF Brenda was a crap ass mom, my mom sold everything she had and got me out the hood soon as I got in trouble the first time. Second, how the hell his baby mama start cooking shit without all the ingredients, if I'm making my wife dinner, I buy all the fixings first thing in the morning. Also Doe boy was jealous, Ricky had in house 🐈 plus a future. Another thing dude really got killed because he bumped into someone and didn't say "excuse me sir." That's the most pathetic part. You can break down every detail but a simple "excuse me brother I didn't mean to walk into you." That would have saved his life. That's fucking pathetic that he died over ego by people that got killed over ego and really Doe boy was the only pure soul in the movie. He was a product of his environment trying to be the best man he could.
@Jaliseemo
@Jaliseemo 6 месяцев назад
I think Ricky’s death showed that you can become a product of your environment even if you are not involved in the gang life. We all wanted better for him. We almost expected doughboy to be killed because of his behavior but Ricky just wanted to play football and get out the hood.

They took his body home because at the beginning of the movie when. Trey was younger they went to go see a dead body. That was just laying there for days. They took him home so he won't just be laying in the street for hours add a bit of shock

The military discussion was Interesting from a different perspective. I'm from norfolk va, where one of the largest naval bases are located. Everyone here is connected to the military. So when a person decides to join the military here it's looked at no different than college. I always wondered what it's like in non military towns' opinions on the military.

Ricky: Ricky story is always a sad story to kids in the hood. The what if and regrets are always . For Ricky, I never thought about the after effects of what if he would have survived. But we know what would’ve happened… he would’ve ended up like Lil Chris. If he wouldn’t of went to the store and saw his ACT scores were high enough, and went on to play ball, we already saw the outcome of that in another movie that you’ve guys done a deep dive on, The Best Man. That’s how Rick‘s life supposed to have turned out. But like y’all said, unfortunately, the first shot ended Ricky’s career, and the second shot ended his life. 😢😢😢😢

There's a marked difference between being an athlete and having hands. Ricky was a high-level athlete and football player, true enough. The problem is that Doughboy had been fighting since they were kids and likely fought often to keep his manhood in the pen. That and the lifting Doughboy was doing in prison helped make up for the disparity between Doughboy and Ricky in terms of athleticism. Add to that the fact that Doughboy's style allows for knowing everything about finishing a fight quickly, and the edge easily goes to Doughboy.

Yes , I think pointing out Doughboys demise shows the cycle of violence . The whole premise of the movie

52:23 Doughboy's death was inevitable. Ferris was a blood, it's implied that Doughboy is either a crip or a crip affiliate. It was a matter of time that someone would retaliate for killing Ferris crew. Doughboy said it himself in that last conversation with Tre, that someone may come back to smoke him.

I have the exact same reaction when I see it. He was on his way out, and some genuine bs took him out. It's hard to see, even on screen, the REALITY that so many of us have witnessed or even experienced. My brother was killed at 16yo by his "friend " (pistol to his head) over a girl.
