Back in high school, we used to do the beep test in PE once per year. Everyone hated it, but I loved it. A bunch of kids skipped school knowing it was beep test day, and the next day in PE again they got sent to another class to do it with them, no getting out of it. While I had done it the day before, I asked if I could join in again. On this second day in a row, I actually got my PB for the beep test. Lines up with what you're saying here.

No wonder, I ran half a mile the other day with easy effort, rested up, massaged etc, thought I was rested up nicely etc, next run I do I couldn't even do half the distance without stopping, I'm like wth happened? Ty for this video.

You're a modern day super hero. I think your information can really save people's running. I was intuitively implementing this idea over the last few months coming back from my last race. I stopped myself from red-lining too much in training. I think people stiffen their bodies too much by training too hard and it leads to injury. It's hard to get the ego in check and run appropriate mileage and slow down sessions to appropriate paces. Too easy to want to run the workouts faster every week!

Yes there's a balance, and some stiffness is good (helps running economy, elasticity etc.) but then it can become restricting.

Finally, the method behind the madness. I've been prepping for races all wrong, because while the faster runners do what you described, doing strides and hill sprints the day before a race, they never articulated WHY. I figured that madness was for super fit, super fast runners, not sloths like me, so I did the opposite. Thank you so much for the information. This horse is drinking from your trough. Wow, weird... 😆

I've had an absolute superb ordinary long run today: had breakfast, ran right before lunch and did some short activation excercises before starting (desk job is killing to start running cold). Brilliant feeling. The little things outside of the actual running really do matter.

Been running for 35 years, when I was younger 400m, now in my +45 days marathons. And I just learned about soft and hard muscles. Now I completely understand why I felt so good after some training and so rubbish before a race (too easy running on grass). Thanks for sharing this insight! Great video!

This is berilliant! I don't know how to express my gratitude! I have recently started doing Yuga and my first race after that was a disaster! I really didn't notice what was going on and a lot of people I consulted with said I was overtraining. But, this kept happening. I was huffing and puffing at more and more sessions... it was so frustrating untill I took a deeper look at my training diary. Every training session that was followed by a Yoga session felt terrible! I still wasn't really sure if Yoga was the culprit until I came accross this video. Thank you so much again. I will definitely implement this in my next race.

I always do my warm up before my training runs. The harder the run the more I do warm up and stretching. I normally would do a mile easy run warm up, then stretch, then begin the process. But yeah, those heavy legs sensation is very disappointing feeling. The first time I had that feeling I was so confused, that’s when I realized I was over training and not recovering! I've been running for a little less than 2 years with long breaks in between and finally started to be more passionate with running since the last 4 months. I've only been able to run a little over 10K and this has been a big problem of mine; always feeling sluggish before the long run day and ending up finishing the run sooner than planned or feeling terrible and exhausted during the duration of the run while feeling fine on other days. I guess I try to rest a little too much before d-day. Now I'm finally enlightened why this happens😂 Great video!

Appreciate the info so much Stephen. I have a couple of questions about the strides and hill strides though: a) when would you recommend doing strides alongside a run - would it be on easier/steady days? - and are these strides like 100m, turn round, 100m etc or are they more incorporated into the run? And b), how long should the hill strides be and how steep should the hill be? Thanks😀

You guys must sprint instead of that useless slow running. Endurance should never be the goal. So many people focus on endurance training because they are to weak and unhealthy to do the real stuff (speed, power and strengh). Indeed training with speed, power and strength will make us fit, healthy, smart, keep us young and sexy and full of confidence. Most of you already know this of course. But we also know what not to eat... Taking action is the first and most important step.

I worry about using pseudoscience words like hard and soft muscles. It would also be wise to mention that muscle activation is about the neural connections to the muscles, not the muscle fibre itself. No offense, your videos are entertaining but you take a fair old leap from reality in trying to explain this stuff.
