This is some BULLSHIT. As a straight dude who originally got forced into watching Drag Race with my girl and ended up actually loving it, I can't belive people are STILL not welcoming Ru and all his work. The guy is an amazing, heart warming person who kicks down doors for others who need it. Ru should be as mainstream as they come, he is in my eyes anyway :) He made me see drag in a whole new light, he changed how I think and made me more accepting, his voice needs to be heard.
"If you can't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?" has been my mantra for years, specially going through depression. Thank you, Rupaul
Vinícius Ferreira I've battled those demons since middle school n highschool and early 20's to the point where it was just too much... but u learn that the only way u will be happy is by first accepting yourself the way u are and loving yourself and get the strength to go on in life... u may think u are worthless but no one is... everyone matters ... that spiritual strength is what we all need... cause life is hard and we all grow up eventually...
As a straight female, Ru Paul is my role model. She has forever changed the way society views drag and without her, myself and I'm sure many others wouldn't have discovered the wild and wonderful world that is drag. Thank you Ru for changing lives across not only America but the world ❤️
I completely agree. I can't say that I grew into the woman I am today had I not watched the show or implemented the strength and confidence these queens have.
Rupaul has been the biggest source of inspiration for me in the last couple of years, with his drag queens and music I owe so much to mama ru. Thank you for your positivity and influence. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way 💖
+Kasen Tyler Yes? Hell, I can get inspired by a god damn painting or a movie, so why couldn't I, or anyone really, get inspired and influeced by a person who is being their true self and sharing nothing but happiness and positive vibes around them!
I dont really want drag race to go mainstream.. I feel like the more mainstream something is, the more people knock it down. Things like justin beiber, one direction, and some tv shows on mtv etc are so mainstream that people get tired off seeing them and slowly begin to dislike them. Drag race is a postitive place for people that I see as family to feel like themselves. I feel like going mainstream would destroy that somewhat
Agree, I've seen it with k-pop. And it sucks for me, been into k-pop for almost 8 years now. And it went down the hill and I don't like it at all now. Fans are crazy, idols try to impress west culture and way too many fan wars. I hope Drag race stays there where it is.
You make an excellent point, Holly. I agree with you 100%! I also feel that people will turn drag queens into the newest marketing scheme and try to profit off the artistry of the craft of drag. I can see networks like TLC grasping on to it, and exploiting talented queens for their own profit. Drag is an art, and must be treated as such. Sometimes the best art is found underground, where it will be protected.
First of all, people should never be referred to as "it." That's incredibly dehumanizing. Second, in gay, and especially in drag culture, it's generally okay to call a man "her/she" even when they're not in drag
He's too busy mentoring others to have time to do his own makeup. Besides when one is as fabulous as Mama RU you can pay some one to do it for you. When first taking one the persona of RuPaul he probably did all his own makeup and made all his costumes. Its hard to clothe a man that tall in women's clothing. Just saying...maybe that's why the contestants on the show have to make their costumes? I've never actually seen the show I refuse to pay a cable company to be entertained, when the internet does it for a fraction of the price.
+Antonio Kinsey Yeah, but that doesn't mean people "accept" drag queens that much. Ru has plenty of supporters such as myself, but let's not forget hardcore zealots who keep making LGBTs' lives a true nightmare. Those people are probably the ones who make him feel like he'll never be "mainstream" and accepted by "everyone". There are also plenty of trans women who feel insulted by cross dressers and drag queens, which adds a whole new layer of problematic situations to the drag community. So yeah, the art of drag, while strongly appreciated, is also hated by many.
Teddie Sage Good point. It made me think of The Vagina Monologues that was cancelled in some parts because it was deemed not inclusive of transgender women.
Drag race IS mainstream in the sense it is a household name and everybody who is in touch with pop culture is likely to have heard of it- but what RuPaul is trying to say is that HE will never be fully mainstream as LGBT community still is not the norm.. And when it does become normal and completely accepted only then will drag race become truly mainstream
Until Ru mentioned it I hadnt really thought about it but hes right, how come Ellen who's openly gay has NEVER had him on her show? It doesnt make any sense...
+DualGrey Well, I mean, it sorta does, unfortunately.... think about all the people who watch Ellen. Would they prefer to hear Ellen and Ru actually seriously discussing drag, or would they want jokes about it? .....Well, we know Mama Ru wouldn't go on just to get joked about. And, like you said. She's never been on, has she? So, I guess we know why.
Ally M Yeah I guess it makes sense, especially considering what a terrible interviewer Ellen is. When Joan Rivers had her show she had Ru and many other queens and didnt talk down to them and that was years ago!
Because Ellen's show appeals to a broader and often more conservative audience. But she's doing just as much good for America as a popular gay celebrity as RuPaul has, just in different ways. Every gay celebrity represents the community in their own individual way.
+DualGrey Until Ru mentioned it I hadnt really thought about it but hes right, how come Ellen who's openly gay has NEVER had him on her show? It doesnt make any sense... what was their a scheduling issue? please te;; me some one else got that
***** Yeah but like, Ellen has all kinds of weird shit on her show. Celebrity guests from every genre imaginable, little kids doing random stuff, you name it. There's literally no chance that she only has guests who specifically work for things that are her own "interests" when she's had such a hugely wide variety of guests. No one likes EVERY genre of television and movie... that's the definition of "favorites" and "interests". Everything can't be your favorite.
today's makeup looks and trends the highlighting and contouring, cut creases, bold brows, overdrawn lips, dramatic fake lashes = all originated from drag makeup hunty!
He should just go for it, step a toe in the water and experience something out of his comfort zone, might learn something new about himself in the best ways possible.
Why would You say that did you hear Ellen say she never would invite Ru on no! Then it is Ru reaching out to calm on main stream to make him even more $$$$. It is Hollywood. As too Logo Ru shows is ug has been Logo needs some real programing on for the LGBT community he's all the past hits are great but we need real shows series, programs!
+Joey C Its not that she would never invite him but from the way Ru says it implies that she has asked for RuPaul the Queen to come on but only if she can make fun at Ru's expense. While I do hope that's not the case with these two... if it is then I'm pretty disappointed in Ellen. I should have been more clear in my original post. ^_^ Also I agree they need more real programming on LOGO. An HD channel option wouldn't hurt either yikes. lol
I don't think that's what he meant at all. I think he's saying that for mainstream media, anything that is very different from the norm tends to be made fun of. He's not saying Ellen would do that, it's just a major TV show part of mainstream media.
xXMustPlayGamesXx That does make sense! And surely Ellen's hands are still tied by the network who'd rather keep the mainstream viewers happy and not get their jimmies rustled! ~_^
Ellen has all types of people on her show. I have never seen Ru invite Ellen on his show. Sure it works both ways. Besides, RuPaul is the famous persona, so it makes sense that is how he/she would appear on Ellen.
_So Ellen would let the Kardashian/Jenner clan come on her talk show but she want invite Rupaul?_ *C* harisma *U* niqueness *N* erve *T* alent _That's all_♥♥♥
It's all about the viewers and ratings. Who do you think they'd wanna see more, RuPaul or Kim K? Who do you think would get more ratings? Who do you think gets more attention?
Good interview, but I think the fact that the correspondent mentioned that was uncomfortable really reinforces Ru's point about drag as a culture having to be the butt of a joke to be in mainstream media.
A while back I was really sad and I wouldn't talk to anyone and I just hid in my room. I could tell people were getting worried about me but I didn't know I was sad. The day I saw rupauls drag race, and I wasn't sad anymore. Rupaul was a huge inspiration to me and he got me to be happy again. I was amazed about what he had accomplished even when some people (a lot of people) may not accept him or understand his work. Whenever I'm confused or scared I just think: "What would rupaul do". Without him, I would still be in the same place as before. Basiaclly I'm saying that I agree completely. Excuse my spelling and grammar lol
Drag is such a huge and influential part of the lgbt community, and Drag Race has not only brought so many in the lgbt community together but people from all walks of life and cultures are fans of the show and have reached a new level of understanding and respect for lgbt people. With all the anti-bullying of gay youth speeches and preaching of acceptance Ellen does on her show, it surprises me that RuPaul could only be on Ellen, who's a lesbian herself that's had her own struggles with people and Hollywood not accepting her, if he were MADE FUN OF. Hypocrite! I've lost a few levels of respect for her. The fact that she refuses to acknowledge RuPaul and all the positivity and success that has come from his show speaks volumes.
Well said, I truly hope Ellen didn't say anything like that to Ru. I think Ru brought it up to make a point....hasn't been interviewed on Ellen, who's a huge part of mainstream LGBTQ. I would hope if Ru went on Ellen it would be more of a 'I love and admire you' instead of making fun. Maybe the focus could be on the self help spirituality of MamaRu. If I was a host that would be my focus, I'd be putting that gorgeous bitch on a pedestal and talking Ru up to people who have no idea what they're missing.
me too, but I've always been a 'fag hag' growing up my mom's best friend was a gorgeous ebony enchantress drag queen. so it just feels like part of who I am. I came to terms a long time ago that my 'alternative look' is MY drag!
Ellen only cares if you're a "respectable" gay by societies standards. Drag crosses those boundaries and makes people uncomfortable. Sad, because Ellen could help transcend those boundaries... but she won't because she's fake.
I am a heterosexual female who has become a Drag Queen enthusiast..I love the variety it's like watching Lucy Ball, Carol Burnnet, Flip Wilson, and Vaudeville all rolled into one.... I love What RuPaul brings to everything he does... It's not only entertaining but also up to date and informative. And he does it with humility and empathy. I love the art of Drag...and yes it's an art...not everyone is cut out to do it, no matter how enthusiastically they are about what they do. Look forward to seeing more of your Girls RuPaul.
+Cathleen Walls Same here. I love watching all his shows and I like that through watching WowPresents on RU-vid all manner of videos pertaining to the history of the community come up on my suggestion list. I've never had a problem with how others love or live but it is good to know the struggles so you can be more prepared for the assholes of this world. One of the things I'm most happy about is that I raised my children to be accepting and now that they are adults they show me everyday how well they learned what I taught them.
I'm so glad to hear that. Most people aren't capable of teaching their children to be more accepting of diversity in others.. they haven't yet learned it themselves.... :)
Funny,Tyler Perry can get interviews for doing drag (Madea) on Ellen, why not RuPaul? They both entertain. Drag is drag. Back in Shakespeare time, men played women rolls in plays.
I'm just a regular straight girl and I love Rupaul I came upon this show while channel surfing I was bored and just couldn't find anything to watch. I've always loved art and fashion, I love pageants and competition shows. when I turned the channel I remember seeing these gorgeous girls modeling and I thought "wow gorgeous!" and started watching it( It was Rupaul's Drag Race Season 3) there was Raja,Carmen Carrerra, Alexis Mateo, Mariah, and my fave miss Yara Sofia I was so impressed when I found out they were all guys because I grew up in a Christian household and my parents were pastors so I never knew much about drag but my dad never spoke ill about anybody so I never felt any certain way about gays or anything like that I've always just loved people no matter what.. any way my point is I've been hooked on this show since, have gone back and watch the past seasons and have seen every season since. I love how talented and creative and fabulous these ladies are I love getting to see the human side of them and learning more about the LGBT community in general! I wish people were less judgemental and would put their differences aside we are all different and beautiful because of it..much Iove for mama Ru and all the Queens!
+Steven Cramsie oooo ouch. To far dude to far. There's a difference between reading or throwing shade and being a flat out bitch and you just crossed it my friend lol
RuPaul is such an inspiration to all. Yes, even us straight gals. Such charisma and honesty. I've learned a lot about make up application too. Thank you Ru for continuing to open doors. You are an amazing human being. Now please drag me out! That would be a dream come true!
I really thought I understood US TV, but I guess I don't; if Ru was in the UK he'd be on Primetime of any or all of our main channels; he could do family stuff or late night TV, whatever he wanted, US TV people really can be big douche bags! Although you could say it makes it more fun that he's not on mainstream TV, so it's still OK I suppose ;-)
I saw this on the news the other night and I couldn't believe what I was seeing (mostly cause I was smoking that happy grass) but Ru on ABC News... I felt a little bipolar. I was smiling and crying at the same damn time. 😂Lol. Tears of joy! One day soon we will see Ru, and maybe his girls too, on Ellen, or either Jimmy late night shows. Then you know you made it when you hit SNL, but in my eyes Ru's always been NUMBER 1 ;) #RuPaul #1 💕🍭💋
I'm a transexual woman, I make videos on here and I do NOT feel insulted by drag queens at all. In fact I LOVE drag queens!! The glamour, the artistry behind it and the amount of guys it takes to get on that stage and out on a show...I applaud them!!! I'm secure enough in myself as a woman to not feel insulted by gorgeous drag queens and Naomi smells killer legs for days!!! We are a community and if we can't support each other....well it's just a sad way to divide us when we should be strong and showing as much love and support for others as we would have them do unto us. #LiveOUTLoud #OneLove
I hear lots of people using Shade this and shade that... mostly on RU-vid but hey let's not forget where its from guys... give credit where credit is due... RuPaul... u girl... keep working momma... Sashay ... U... Stay
XxiKarlosxX xoxo Sweetie, RuPaul did not invent the term Shade. That term comes from the underground of Ballrooms in New York. Which is where she got it from.
Drag race is pretty mainstream not going to lie, literally 90% of people I know watch it 😂 I even use it as an ice breaker when I meet people in clubs but asking them who their favourite winner is
The straight world seeing it as a novelty and not taking it seriously doesn't mean...no straight people like the show lol. I mean something very different.
I don't know how to feel about the comments RuPaul made about Ellen. It's fucked up she wouldn't support what he does. I hope that mama Ru will become more and more bigger
+MegaSayitlikeitis Ikr years ago Ellen was a guest on Ru's Vh1 talk show, Ru even filmed one those funny little intro bits Ellen used for her sitcom (the first one) an yet Ru has never been invited to be a guest on Ellen's show. So weird an I am a huge Ellen fan too, and of RuPaul. Oh well, Ellen doesn't owe Ru anything but it'd be pretty cool to see him an Ellen chat but whatevs. I feel like now that its Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show he'd have Ru on, cuz Jimmy seems like so much more of an open-minded kind of guy than Leno (not saying that Leno isn't but uknowhatImean)
She owes him a lot. He and many others have paved the way for the acceptance of lgbt people in mainstream culture. The least she could do is pay homage.
+Pickled Pussy Allen spreads herself so so thin on her show if she were to have ru there she would just blow alin out of the water with her presence alone. ru would kill alin 😂 like I'm talking she'd literally blow her top off 😂😂
Anthony DeVeaux Well that is mainly used by white gays. Not trying to devalue black culture but at this point, black and gay culture in the US are very closely intertwined and specifically for gay culture, I dont see a reason to exclude people from it considering that we've been excluded from society all our lives.
I understand mama Ru I remember when I was figuring out my sexuality ( I'm Asexual ). I was reading about it and looking up some videos and all that so I stumbled on a video of David Jay (he's the founder and webmaster of the Asexual Visibility and Education Network) he was in the view talking about Asexuality and they were making fun of it the whole time.
@@EmmyV2002 Being indifferent about it for yourself doesn't mean you don't care about the topic. I don't mind being referred to as he/she/they because I'm totally indifferent about it. At the same time, totally respect if someone asks me to use a certain one for them.
RuPaul is one of the most amazing humans alive right now. I love his genuineness, love, and fierceness. Yas! If there were more people like him, a lot of us would have more drive and confidence 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
RuPaul, I have been blessed just recently to watch Nelsons videos ( not all of them but I'm working on it ) I grew up seeing you on TV and it's been kinda surreal finding Nelsons videos and now seeing how far you have come. He would be so incredibly proud of you.
I love you Rupaul!!! I search the interweb for all your interviews and show clips since I sadly don't have your channel on tv. I still try to watch you as much as I can!
All of RuPaul's famous quotes; (I KNOW I'M MISSING SOME BUT THERE ARE LIKE 10 SEASONS I CAN'T NAME ALL THE THINGS SHE'S EVER SAID!) "You got shemail" "Good luck, and don't fuck it up." "Gentlemen, start your engines, and may the best woman win!" "The winner of RuPaul's drag race will receive a one-year supply of Anastasia Beverly Hills cosmetics, and a cash prize of $100,000" "Condragulations, you are the winner of this week's challenge." "I'm sorry, my dear, but you are up for elimination." "So, just between us squirrel friends, what do you think?" "The time has come, for you to lip sync for your life!" "And remember, if you can't love yourself, how in the hell are gonna love somebody else? Can I get an Amen in here?" "Alright, now let the music play!"
Here we are five years later, and while I don't know how exactly Ru would define mainstream "acceptance", I feel like the show has accomplished much more in that regard than he expected back then.
It's so eye-opening for me because I'm a 45 year old straight mother of 2 kids. And I'm a welder in a shipyard full of men, and even though I'm heterosexual I get looked down on due to my gender. I'm constantly defending my sexuality from narrow minded people. I started talking to the women in my industry who were lesbian...just to get another perspective on life and found that I have been missing out on a fantastic, educated and beautiful group of people. And felt a bit of shame for not having a more open heart and mind all these years. Although I'm still straight...I have a diverse group of friends now and have a deep respect for the gay community in general. And to top it off, Ru Pauls Drag Race is one of my favorite shows.
Drag Race and Rupaul as a brand and personality are well integrated into the mainstream. There's nothing subversive or niche about either anymore. Not sure who Rupaul thinks she's kidding. He's absolutely correct though that (after stamping on the LGBT community) straight people like to adopt all the gay and drag slang and culture when it seems suddenly edgy and cool to do so.
+James George you're so right. It seems every few years, the non-oppressed majority have "brand new" trends never before seen, like how last year, a brand new "in-thing" was for white women to wear the dashiki. It's disgusting.
Since I was a kid I never knew that that beautiful woman was RuPaul. My mom told me. Since 2011 I've been a fan. I love Rupaul's Drag Race and EVERY contestant entered. Im rewatching the season's now as we speak. 😍💙💗💚💗💙😍
Even though I feel its a shame that it isn't being picked up by the mainstream, on the other hand I feel drag will and should always be something underground because that's what makes it so special and keeps it special for the people that truly love and enjoy it.
I'm 16 and I love Ru, I've heard his name growing up many times and my friend started watching the show in the middle school and when I would come over we'd watch it and now I love it so much
I think a lot of people are missing the point of what Ru's said. I don't think mainstream media doesn't want him, I think he wants to stray away from it because mainstream media twists and contorts wonderful things into mediocre ones and Drag Race deserves better than that.
I get so used to seeing Ru with the larger than life personalities on the show that I forget how huge his own personality actually is. This sounds like a read but I 100% do not mean it in a negative way
I've been a fan of RuPaul for years and I always wondered why she wasn't more popular an why I've seen almost no interviews of her. When she says that all these talk show hosts are likely to only make fun and make a joke out what she does, I completely understand now. And she's right. That's exactly what they would do. Every single one of them. Maybe not Wendy Williams. She's in Drag herself.
