Ridley himself and the writer, can't recall the name, plus contributions by Russell, they wrote it day by day as they were literally filming in the meanwhile. Sounds absurd but it's actually what happened.

The original script was pitched as a satire of the contemporary entertainment industry told through the lens of Ancient Rome. The only people who like satire about Hollywood, are Hollywood. Thank God Ridley and Russell sacked the original writer and made the Studio and Producers see sense!
