The CCP has never truly been friends with the Russian Federation. Their decades long animosity towards the US and the west made them allies of "convenience." at times. That relationship has always been fragile at best.

I live in China and bargaining/haggling is a sport out here. Ofcoooooourse they are going to now use their leverage to squeeze Russia on insanely low gas prices... this is the downside of being subservient to the Chinese gov. Its the same out here when negotiating contracts or even buying at the market... they will absolutely do whatever they can to get the lowest price possible. Its not seen as shady, its seen as clever. These guys are not "friends"... they have a common enemy and China has Russia right where they want them.. as a vassal state.

China has their grievances and they want a position to dictate, not to submit. Russia is the same. Unfortunately for Russia, it is too weak to resist China. Had Putin been more interested in building his country, no one would have complained. But now he chose war and this happened.

Think about BRICS. Brazil just wants an independent foreign policy free from US influence, Russia fears Chinese economic dominance, India and China have active border disputes claiming the lives of soldiers in both countries in recent years, and South Africa is too preoccupied with internal problems to do much of anything. BRICS is clear demonstration that countries don't have friends, they have interests.

I am Czech-Viet and in Vietnam, a lot of people still think that Russia "will help Vietnam" against China and dismissed the theory that China is the senior partner of Russia. They seem unable to understand that Russia is not equal to China considering the "no-limit partnership" is actually only favouring China, meaning Russia will support China even more to keep itself afloat. Where is Russia when China invaded Vietnam in 1979, 1984, 1988 and now?

If a small state like Ukraine can waltz into sovereign Russian territory without getting nuked, why not China which is far superior militarily? Siberian oil is there for the taking. It's only a matter of time before economic conveniences end and strategic interests begin. This friendship is Molotov-Ribbentrop 2.0. The Russians are at war on the wrong part of their border.

I kinda guessed this was the case. While the two are enemies of the west, China is more of an economic and industrial player than Russia. So they don't want to jeopardise that.

I'm gonna give you guys a literary and historical lesson. Traditionally, in china, what the west calls friends is referred to as brothers, 兄弟. The word for friend, meanwhile, is 朋友--the 朋 meaning to symbolise the stringed up coins that was the most common currency in ancient China. So yeah. Friends are transactional in china.

You don't need to sign friendship treaties with countries you're friends with. So many dumb people commenting a 'friendship treaty' is akin to NATO. 🤣 That's a defence treaty, my guys. You might want to look it up, it's kind of a big deal if you live in the west.

As someone who spent over a month in china 2 months ago I will say that the Chinese public overwhelmingly have a positive opinion on Russia. I can’t speak for the CPC of course but Russian shops and even in their military museums have a section showing their relationship with Russia is clear that the public is much more with Russia than the government is.

In Central Asia, we have a clear resentment of Russia and China due to the devastation they left on us. But if we have to choose who is going to do business, we would choose China. This said a lot about Russia's status.

China's economy has been struggling for the last few years, as I keep hearing from my relatives in Shanghai. There is quite a bit of discontent in the society due to the hardship, unemployed youth. Beijing doesn't need Moscow to cause them more headaches right now, like getting more chinese companies sanctioned.

Russia has this thing called "allergy in anything but bullying". I grew up in an area with many refugees from central asia and some of eastern Europe and many of them ended up returning back and getting involved with politics and they all have to say the same thing about Russia. "They dont want to have diplomatic relationship, they want to have the total control". This became prevalent when the invasion started and i started looking in foreign media on how they were reporting the invasion. Kazakhi media for example were mentioning both western and russian propaganda frequently and in many cases they were sympathetic to Ukrainians.

Russia and China haven't really been "allies" since the Sino-Soviet split during the Cold War. It's been more of a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" situation since then. But even that's seemingly on the line

It apparently wasn't a very good strategy for Putin to throw away Russia's biggest, closest and most reliable customer and then go to Xi begging and pleading and saying, "Please, please help me. I've got a vast amount of extra natural gas to unload and nobody to sell it to and I'm desperate to aell it because i really, really need money for a stupid war that I started in Ukraine. If I lose this war I will have destroyed Russia in the process and made myself the laughingstock of the world". Hardly a strong bargaining position for Putin. And he chose to put himself in that position.

The Chinese can hold a grudge for a very, very long time. Remember Russia annexed a large part of Chinese territory in the north east. Recently, a new Chinese map claimed this territory as part of China, not Russia. China does not consider Russia a friend, merely an ally of convenience.

China will not risk an economic backlash to stand by Russia. The "limitless friendship" will only last as long as the perks overweigh the drawbacks.

Is it at all shocking? They're both expansionist powers, of course their "friendship" would be short lived. This isn't even mentioning how starkly different the cultures are, their histories, their languages, their interests etc. They couldn't be more different. There's a reason why western alliances tend to last longer: cultural homogeneity. The further east an alliance goes, the more tenuous the alliance is. Countries like the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Canada for instance will likely be friends for the foreseeable future thanks to a shared culture and history.

Friends don't need to have the same view on everything nor one need to sacrifice everything for the other side. BRICS nations are all players from same level. They negotiate and make deals from their own nation's interest. It may sound weird to the West. The West accustom to US as the leader and dictate and force other "allies" to act in a particular way, even if the action is against their own national interest.

I think anyone with half a brain could ascertain that China's relationship to Russia is "transactional". Every nation's relationship with another nation is transactional.

With China building solar power plants and EVs, their need for gas in decreasing. China is also exporting EVs globally. That decreases the need for gas as a global commodity. In short, China is actively taking actions on a global stage that will permanently reduce Russian power.

China is big enough not to need friends. And there are still major unresolved border issues - China wants outer Manchuria back, which includes all of the Amur region, and also wants to reincorporate outer Mongolia, which has been in the Russian orbit since the 1920s.

You missed racism in USSR quite early on that made them hostile to China

I doubt they have fallen out but they certainly have different goals and interests. China and Russia will inevitably have a relationship, as they both see themselves in opposition to the West. But the issue is, whether Russia (i.e., Putin) can accept that they are essentially supine to China now. Putin still seems to think Russia is a power on par with China, and that's simply not the case. Either way, ultimately, China will gain more control over Russia's resources and its future.

I hope they work things out, I really hate seeing friends fight 😕

I heard one old story that when China invaded Vietnam in 1979, the Vietnamese hoped that their military pact with the Soviet Union signed years earler would mean the Soviets would fight China. But after a month, nothing happened and the Soviets did not intervene. Now I understand what kind of nation Russia has been for centuries. No wonder why they have no problem allying with China.
