80 years after WW2, Russia's continuing population woes can be blamed mostly on government policy. When your nation is corrupt and authoritarian, it is tough for a young family to want to have children. Russia continues to needlessly threaten its neighbors and suffer sanctions. Its state owned/oligarch controlled industries enjoy so much protectionism that the common man can't compete. Jobs and wages stagnate or shrink and then who can afford kids?
Yeah, other countries suffered similar or worse destruction as a result of WW2 - e.g., Poland, Germany, China - and have long since recovered to a far greater extent. People can't keep blaming Russia's woes on 'the scars of WW2.' It's an excuse some Russians use to avoid accepting that their biggest problem is having terrible governments for over a century.
@@markzucker5893 Less than a century. The government of the USSR was normal, the population was growing. At the time of 1917, the population of the Russian Empire was 160 million people. The population of the USSR at the time of 1991 was 285 million people (perhaps even excluding Poland).

Tihi WW1 could’ve been avoidable if Russia chose to wait it out and fully industrialise, but WW2 wasn’t, you’re right. However, if the Russians chose to sit it out instead of fighting Germany in WW1, it would’ve easily won any conflict which came after.
@@TOLML Russia couldn't have waited out ww1, they would have lost too much influence in the balkans to the central powers and France would have lost the war without them(the only reason the uk joined was because germany went through belgium to knock out france quicker so it could focus on russia) thus making letting germany and austria become the dominant powers of europe, and possibly turning out even worse for russia if they decided they wanted the rest of poland.
My grandfather disappeared without a trace in 1941. He was commander of R.W.P.A. (Major - one bar) and was stationed in Dunno, where he was transferred just one week before June 22nd. So, yes, you were lucky - my father didn't know his father, he was just 5 y.o., when war begun.
Anthony Perez To manage it you have to create more residential zones during the death wave, and make sure to keep immigration at a constant pace. Also, put crematoriums or cemeteries everywhere so that everyone doesn't leave a building when a person dies. Also, deathwaves are not accurate in Cities Skylines because of birth dates being ridiculously high in the game, and deaths being ridiculously high as well. My country: Finland is not as east as Russia, but still a neighbour country. The population here is about 5,5 million and isn't rising fast at all. One reason could be the Winter war and Continuation war. The wars were fought against Soviet union in years 1939-1945 and the later struggle to drive Nazies away from Finland. In the Winter War Finnish people were killed around 25 000 and 43 500 lost. In the Continuation War Finnish people were killed 63 200 or lost. It was huge setback to Finland because there were only 3,6 million people in Finland in 1939. Other one is economical struggle.
To be fair, the whole WW2 thing, how they got involved and why they lost so many people DOES stem from tyranny. Stalin's total disregard of human life was a key factor, and economic recovery wasn't a priority after the war either, as teh USSR spent all the money on the bullshit arms race to occupy other nations which they plundered and pillaged for 40 years, but it still wasn't profitable enough, so a net loss to both the USSR and the occupied countries. So yeah, it is absolutely the fault of the USSR's leadership.
I’m Russian. My grandfather was born in 1923 and he is still alive and has a bright mind. He is a veteran of WWII. He was injured during the War. Afterward he became a really successful lawyer. He retired 10 years ago. Almost 65% of territories in Russia are located on Permafrost. Siberia is known for its strongest frost. Yakutsk for example has average temperature in January about - 40 °C, but it is often colder. In Magadan the temperature rises above zero only from May to September, and winds from the Sea of Okhotsk blow all year round. It’s really difficult to live and to survive there. I can’t but agree that our government doesn’t do a great job to support people who live there. Conversely it doesn’t regulate cost of fuel, gas, products, that’s why it’s really expensive to live there. People don’t have really good infrastructure. That’s why they leave their hometown. Someone just tries to survive... The question about population is really complicated. Obviously, it’s not only about cold. People move to other countries, for example. Scientists don’t have money for their discoveries, doctors, teachers are not well paid. Somebody doesn’t want to live in these conditions. Cancer influences a lot. Some of medicines are not registered in Russia, so some patients can’t have innovative medical care (against melanoma, lymphoma). People die in car crashes because of disregard for the speed limit... Russia is really difficult to understand, it has a lot of problems. Our older generation still has fear in the blood because of wars, Stalin, repressions, horrible 90-s, so they are afraid of everything and everybody🤷🏼♀️. However we are welcoming, we have the “wide soul”, despite our pokerfaces or even gloomy appearance☺️. We like guests, holidays, big parties, but our mentality is a bit strange (consequences of USSR, political situation etc). P.s. Moscow and St. Petersburg are not cold. They have really warm summer (25-30 °C) and beautiful winter with snow (-5 - 15 °C).
Gustavo Adolfo It makes sense! At the same time it’s a disputable idea, because climate change can make everything worse:) A lot of territories could be under water🤷🏼♀️ I think government change could help us a lot🤔😬🤫

It's not just the Great Patriotic War - though that is certainly a major factor. The first half of the 20th century was a very bad time for Russia - losses in the First World War were also very substantial, and it was followed by a long and bloody civil war, and then Stalinist policies of rapid industrialisation that took a heavy toll on the rural population. And then World War 2... From 1914 to 1945, merely 31 years - a single generation - Russia had lost countless millions, mostly young men who perished in war - and suffered a major blow to the productivity of the agricultural sector. The empire that had been perhaps the greatest exporter of agricultural products throught the 18-th and 19-th centuries was reduced in the 20th century to a reliance on food imports.
What happened to Russia between 1914 and 1945 was something like what happed to the Holy Roman Empire between 1619-1648. Recovery did not occur until the 19th century. Which is why so many Germans emigrated, including to Russia.
Nah dude, the population losses in the great war were insignificant to alter the population structure, because the population kept growing during wartime. The Russian Empire in the two and a half years lost 2.254.000 dead soldiers and 1.140.000 dead civilians for a total of 3.394.000 dead. The Reds on the other hand in almost four years, lost 8.700.000 dead soldiers and 18.300.000 dead civilians,a total of 27.000.000 dead...and that's the official estimate there are even higher estimates
literally no problem considering how 9 children families seemed to be a norm in russia back in 1950's(looking at my family tree, my great grandfather had 9 children, grandfather had 5, father had 2.....) russia lost more population to people simply not breeding than to war, just like other eu countries

But not in modern times... they lost a lot of their men in wars which is the first reason why they're shrinking.
