Recent years have shown that it is not possible for a manager to simply transpose the style he implemented with one team onto another. Pep Guardiola had serious teething problems in his first term at Manchester City, before investment in the transfer window allowed him to build a squad capable of playing his way effectively. Presently, Maurizio Sarri is experiencing similar issues imposing the football he became renowned for at Napoli in the Premier League with Chelsea.

I, too, find it confusing the suggestion Luiz can't do long balls. The man sometimes takes free kicks for Brazil! Sarri has better players that Conte ever had in his second season when they failed. Conte just didn’t have the players. If we had Conte right now with Loftus Cheek/ anybody but Morata (even Higuain)/ Odoi/ Healthy Barkley/ Kovacic/ Jorginho; it would have been a three legged race for the league. But instead he had Lord Bakayoko/injured Barkley/ Morata/ and Moses.

@@dani__crocs and they did that because Conte's introduction of the 3-4-3 formation had taken most of the title contenders by surprise. Chelsea was on a record winning streak, which came to an end at the hands of Pochettino's Tottenham. After that fixture, pretty much everyone in the upper half of the table had figured out the style, but that streak propelled us across the finish line. The very next season, Chelsea was humiliated in the first match by Burnley. And by that time, Klopp and Pep had streamlined their clubs. So a title run was out of the question. With Pochettino's tight grasp on the Tottenham ship and Jose's second season form, we were out of Top 4 at the end. Even Sarri's playing style gave us the initial momentum, giving a semblance of the three-legged race till October. But the same thing has happened. The player's mentality is certainly to be questioned. The last moments of the ET in the Carabao cup final had shown the disrespect Kepa had shown towards Sarri and Azpilicueta's apparent absence in the entire matter was dishonorable as the man with the armband.

Chelsea's crossing ability in general is shocking, even (or especially) from set pieces. How do you expect to score against a compact 4-5-1 without utilizing the wide areas? Corners fail to clear the first man. Our fullbacks can't cross, our midfielders don't get into the box enough. What's the point of making overlapping run only to pass the ball back 80% of the time? Way too predictable. Recently there have been more crosses, but the quality is still sub-par, to say the least. Btw Liverpool can load the midfield with 3 box-to-box players and still create more chances than Chelsea partly because their fullbacks are so good in offense

@@amoghkashyap2695 Did you not see Sarri asking his fullbacks to cross in that Burnely game? Sarri asking players to cross is one thing but when the players cannot cross what the heck can Sarri do? Go to the field and try to cross the ball himself? Chelsea lacks quality from defense to attack. They do not have players confident and skillful enough to play a dominating possession game. It is so obvious, so blaming Sarri because he is being tasked to implement his expansive playing style in this team is just wrong. Yes he can change the system and do a Conte or Jose, prioritize defense and just counter most of the times. But that is not what Sarri was hired for. I also think the chelsea locker room is a bit of a bunch of snakes, a lot of players wanted to leave for ages, and certainly they are not there for the chelsea project, even though I dont even know how to describe the chelsea project by now. It can be a transition period, but usually that is made by buying players and improving the squad, having a strong stable backbone board which I think chelsea dont have at all. Too shady of a board right now, not the right personnel and they are running the club like they are running a falling business. They need to change their approach. Still believe in Sarri, but i think from the players to the board, the whole structure needs a modification.

@Liam Totally agree. Lack of a PLAN B when shit hits the fan is what Sarri lacks BIG TIME. Pep has atleast five or six ways of playing depending on the oppositions approach. Sarri just uses the same old same old dogshite tacticts against every team. Some times it looks like he only care about that possession stats more than goals and chanches created. Lack of rotation is also a big reason why Chelsea gets countered so damn hard. He just doese the same shit and when he finally succeed he starts braging about how good his tactics are, after about 100 attempts. A premier league team with only a plan A, which doesn't fully work at all, is fucking pathetic. I hope the cancerous board can find some actually good solutions and that the team management board can tell Sarri to have AT LEAST 3 different tactics. Cant play possession football when the opposition sits with 10 men in the box and none of our players can hit a screamer shot from 25+ yards.

Easy answer: the club is an oligarchs plaything and the fans at the club are used to instantaneous success. That success used to be achievable with a blank checkbook in the early 2000s and even up through the early 2010s but clubs have caught on and adapted to the new landscape and so they’re back on relatively level terms. You can talk about tactics all you want but the reality is that the biggest signing they’ve made since Sarris arrival (pulisic) was not even on his radar as a player and was more or less dropped on him because the Chelsea marketing team can sell his jerseys in the US. This alone explains a lot if you unpack it. Man U is experiencing a similar problem. Business became a large part of the sport when abramovich bought the league title along with the club after his takeover. Since then, many clubs have lost sight of the fact that the business strategy of a club fits in with a larger ethos that the club espouses. Chelsea never really had a culture to speak of, at least not one that created winning teams. So apart from the money there didn’t exist the building blocks of a title winning club. Once the playing field was leveled, these problems reappeared. A coach as ideologically specific as sarri must be given freedom to choose players specifically for his needs so he can adapt. Instead, he’s received almost 0 support from the club and is crucified for not being able to realize HIS vision with THEIR players. I’m an arsenal fan and even I can see that Chelsea are throwing away a great coach because they’re used to buying ready-made success and not building something that becomes sustainably successful.

Chelsea most definitely DID have a culture to speak of. It's the culture of low racism and cuntery personified by their former captain and the approximately 25 times a season their fans are filmed doing crazy racist shit. Shit club, shit entitled fans happy to be the plaything of a literal mobster, that's the culture at Chelsea. When the checkbook stops buying success, 90% of their plastic fans will switch to supporting City or PSG, the rest will go back to complaining about how they had to sit next to a black person on the Tube.

Also he's very underrated in the technical sense. This myth that we should put Kanté "where he belongs" (when he's been playing CM next to another DM in any other season and was never lone DM) is just counter-productive and won't HELP or benefit the team at all. Think about the team as a whole.

I don't agree with the logic that you need to change your formation to *adapt* . That is not true. U can play the exact same formation every week but you can change the defensive and attacking structure and tactics within it because a formation has literally no consequence on a teams style of play. Thiago Motta defined it best saying that these numbers are misleading. The problem is that sarri doesn't change the attacking as well as defensive structure or even alter it which means. That like Mourinho said, they are easy to analyse and create plans for. The space between the centre-half and the fullback (particularly on the left but also right) has been an issue since the second game of the season as pointed out. The biggest problem for me is the fact that jorginho is literally having to make almost everyone In the team into puppets and instruct them. When he is manmarked(which also was tried at Napoli) the other players have not yet acquired the understanding of the system to adjust accordingly and instigate build up like Allan would at Napoli. The issue of the quality of the centre half's is a great spot as they don't have the multi dimensional capacity of Koulibaily who would also help build up. The pressing is also clearly very faulty and they because of the fact that they dont have the physical capability in the forwards to be able to press with the right intensity regularly to win the ball and the tactics aren't perhaps helping solve this issue. Great video guys!!!

We need patience and he needs to adapt. Teams have clearly figured Jorginho out but, have we really done much to address that? Most top European teams use at around 3-4 formations. Have we switched from a 4-3-3 structure at all this season? His refusal to rotate this season has left Christensen looking like a shadow of his former self and with two starting defenders who constantly make mistakes and play the team into pressure when they're not being headless chickens. Kante looks absolutely ragged and look at that, he's off injured. Chelsea have massively talented youth coming through, but are any of them going to get a shot? Ask Napoli fans, Sarri is notorious for never turning to youth unless he has no choice. Yes it's the first season, no one was expecting a title, but Sarri has time and time again made poor tactical decisions and shouldn't be let off with just a pat on the wrist. He needs to improve for the sake of this team.

YET another season with Alonshit at LB, If I where Eden now I would probably contemplating committing suicide. Its fucking awful the players we have at the squad and the board has a bunch of dicks stuck right up their asses. The team needs a WHOLE new look. Sell a bunch of players and rebuild, but buy players that suits this style of football and not because they are popular or have a big reputation. The problem with Chelsea struggling to break down opposition sitting deep has been present for the last 5 years. If you look back they have dropped points agianst weak opposition every season. This is a problem in Chelsea, that ALSO Sarri´s system has struggled to find a solution for. The later part of your analysis seems valid. That the midfield 3 fails to stay compact, resulting in easy transition againts them. But as someone else meantioned in an earlier comment, the breakdown against City, is probably more of a mental, rather than a tactical. Usually when they conceed, it is because they bring a lot of players forward because they struggle to break down the low block and getting caught on the counter.

izzojunior He has too be rigid if he wants to implement this complete 360 overhaul of Chelsea. We've been a defensive, counter-attacking orientated team for years, and in order to transition he needs to be rigid. The predictability is due to the players not performing as well as they should or players who haven't adapted yet. He's also to blame because he doesn't make in-game switches that effect the game but if Plan A isn't working well enough how the hell do u expect them to have a plan B. This video tells me only two things. Signings, and mentality. His style can work but we need smart signings in crucial positions. Players with the right mentality and technical ability too, not Bakayokos and Zapacostas. We need players who are willing to push for a starting position. Such a shame that city look like signing Bruno Fernandes to add to the excellent Bernardo Silva. These are two great players with superb attitudes. First upgrade the full back positions. Bring back Reece James, challenge him to dislodge Azpi. Then somehow coach Emerson and Alonso to become better players for his system. Then get fast paced wingers who are willing to make runs in behind the defence. Not just stand and hope to dribble past a packed defence like Willian and Hazard do. Also get someone with the technical ability to play in Jorginhos position when he needs to rest. He is not a machine. Last and most controversial I would love us to try for Cavani. He is the best at making these intelligent runs in behind the defence that we sorely need to look more threatening in our attacks. 🙏

We can't cross the ball since we hit the first man everytime, long balls are provided by Jorginho and David Luiz, David Luiz stopped crossing because he is lost most of the time while Jorginho's crosses are good but no seems to know how to finish with his crosses

And no the players work well with conte or mourinho system then bad transfer window and player power happened (again) not because the manager systems and how can you say failed when we won 2 league titles, efl and fa cup. yes we CAN most of moratas goals in his first season was from long ball on counter and crosses but again its not sarriball.

Vyze 30 it's failure when you cannot perform anywhere near what You've achieved. 15/16 we had the quality and depth to challenge and win but we did we do? Finish 10th. Under Conte winning the league was easy because he had no European competition and premier league had no idea how to play against a back three. The season after that came a reality check everyone did their homework and knew how to beat Conte's system and where did we finish 5th And started playing sufferball during that season. Call it sufferball or whatever. You cannot play attacking football if you do not know how to move without the ball FULLSTOP. City play a billion sideways and backwards passes but they know how to get the ball in the net, we don't. It looks boring and meaningless if you don't know how to move without the ball. Morata goals came from long balls yes but we cannot provide him that every game. Which is why he left us. He knew this team is clueless most games, and so did Conte which is why he gave up on this team quickly. Our style of play is random. We didn't play Conte's football nor did we play Mourinho football, I don't know how to explain it but this team never succeeded playing a certain type of football. Our attack always relied on individual brilliance no tactical planning or team effort. Diego Costa, Hazard, Willian and Pedro had the chemistry to help eachother out and cause problems to opponent's defence. Once Costa was left, no striker was able to fit in perfectly with the team, because of their unorganized way of attacking hence why Morata, Giroud (until CHO started playing which helped his game alot) and Higuain struggled to score. Even if Conte was backed. This group of players will mess everything up because of their weak mentality.

@@zayedwarsama2817well if u say thats a failure then in your opinion how about sarris system this season? cos i think everyteam already know how to play against us and its only a half maybe more season especially with a squad that much more an upgrade than conte or mourinho season, well prolly not mourinho but its an upgrade from conte squad for sure, and if conte was backed we wont see willian and luiz in the team and for me thats a good thing, cheerio my friend.

Vyze 30 if Conte was here you wouldn't see Hazard, Loftus-cheek, Hudson-odoi and Emerson. Hazard would've left since Conte will stick him as a real striker (instead of a false 9 which is a position Hazard likes to play under Sarri) which will limit him from being effective for the team. Hudson-odoi will be the new Charly musdona and Loftus-cheek would've been wasted playing in a double pivot instead of playing a no.8. and Alonso would still be starting in the team alongside Victor Moses.

Long story short, our current players can’t play sarriball coz they’re selfish on the ball sometimes and don’t listen to sarri SO for us to play a successful sarriball we need new players capable of the play style

Tifo Football: So under Sarri, what players do Chelsea need to sell (and replace them with) in order to be as good or better than City?
@Skepsis0Metal
@Skepsis0Metal 5 лет назад
Almost all of them. Kepa is a very average keeper. He has a similar style to Ederson, but nowhere near as good. We don't have any proper fullbacks like City do. Azpi is getting older and tired because we don't have another RB - he never had the pace or crossing ability to overlap like Kyle Walker. On the left, Emerson shows promise and can improve with training and experience. Alonso is awful defensively since he's a winger not a fullback. Rudi and Christensen are quite solid at CB, though the latter lacks any of the strength required. If Rudi can get better with the ball at his feet I'd be happier. Luiz makes far too many mistakes to be reliable, though his long passing does get us forward when the short passing fails. Jorginho is a whole story of his own. I don't hate him, and he does exactly his job but I don't think that role can work effectively in the Premier League. Serie A is a slower and more carefully/tactically played league which allows passing out of pressure. In England, it's all about the speed and physicality to get forward. RLC and Kante are the rocks in midfield, no complaints for them despite Kante being better suited to a double pivot role in a 4-2-3-1. Kovacic is good technically, but he has no role in Sarri's system so he's never going to shine. Barkley just doesn't have the technical intelligence to suit the system, though he's not a bad player. Willian is nothing but a free kick merchant - defensively awful, slow to make decisions and too selfish to play out wide supporting a number 9. Pedro is world class, but past his prime. Occasionally shows flashes of magic, but its clear he's only got a year left at this level max. Hazard is pretty much the only reason we're in the top half of the table this season, goes without saying. CHO is showing a lot of promise, but needs to improve his situational awareness and overall maturity. He plays like it's a game of FIFA which is great when we need a creative outlet, but leaves us exposed in bigger games. Higuain and Giroud, like Pedro, are both clearly world class but also past their prime. Good strong forwards with their back to goal their link up play is fantastic, but without the end product and stamina to pull out an important goal in the last few minutes they are not very useful.

@DaFluff7 Yeah, I definitely think Kepa has the overhead potential to become one of the best in the league given a couple of seasons, I just don't feel safe with him currently. I think if our back 4 was more reliable, Kepa would have more clean sheets. He's been beaten from outside the box far too many times, so it's on the CBs to close those shots down before they get taken. As a long time fan, I'm willing to take a transfer ban and a couple of years at mid table for Sarri to build a solid squad. Our youth academy is very promising right now, and we have some great prospects on loan deals (Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Kurt Zouma, Trevor Chalobah, Lucas Piazon) plus Pulisic coming next season. I just hope Sarri can use these young guys and mold them into his system, since trying to teach our current old dogs his new tricks just isn't working. The most useful that Jorginho can be is teaching the players the system in the pitch, since he knows it well. I don't think we're winning the PL or UCL in the next 2 years, but long term I'm optimistic

As a Chelsea fan, I admit that we’ve been rough on Sarri. However, Sarri should get another season. With the right funding and time (depending on our impending ban), I think we will perform much better....

The way we defended against city in our 2-0 win and 0-0 draw was our best defense throughout the whole season we should defend more like that but it's not our coach, it's the players some of them need to leave ASAP. We went from fighting for the title to fighting for top 4... sometimes it hard being a chelsea fan after 2 disappointing seasons but TRUST THE PROCESS, klopp and Guardiola both had the same issues in there 1st season and 2nd season they improved. WE ARE CHELSEA AND WE CAN DO THE SAME 💙💙
