I love nyala and how colorful they can get. An elf/satyr race similar to the Pan from the Remnant game series... but as nyala, and more African inspired, would be cool. Euphorbia confinalis and Cyphostemma currorii are also really... really... weird African trees. Oh and don't forget Gardenia thunbergia to feed your elephants :^)
Nyala are amazing :) I had to look up all the plants (Latin is not among the languages I speak :P), though I know them mostly by their Afrikaans names. Gardenia thunbergia is called wildekatjiepiering which translates directly into: wild cat saucer :D
My epic fantasy takes place mainly in a fantastical medieval africa-inspired continent and this has brought up a few things I didn't even think of. Same with your steppe video. Glad I found you! :) I'm surprised we didn't hear anything about the grootslang here!
That’s awesome to hear. Africa is so underrated for fantasy inspiration. The people, the history, the biome, it’s all freaking cool. Can I also recommend my ritual meals video where I talk about the Ethiopian coffee ceremony which is amazing.
@@JustInTimeWorlds I'll take a peak! But that has been one of the cornerstone pieces of my world. Every household does buna withe their family or for guests but things like what sweeteners they use, the kind of cups, extras etc change like fads based on what the ruling clans are seen doing.
I thought you were Swedish living in Finland but quite interesting to hear you lived in South Africa too``. I'll hope to go visit SA one day. Considering the savannas, one of the fantasy continents of my world is partially covered with several savannas, so this came as very helpful and gave me some ideas. Best videos for writers.
I moved from South Africa to Finland and learned Swedish for integration (it’s a dual linguistic country), so I’m a Swedish speaking Finn from Africa 🫣😆
Well I think it would be interesting for a savannah if you have this one piece of land that's perfect immune from droughts or anything like that because it has this Golden Light over it it's called the Golden live
Imagine if ligers were a separate species and could breed naturally in the environment. They have the genes that make male lions big but lack the genes that make lionesses smaller because of their tiger half. They can grow shoulder high to a human.
There actually were ancient lion species that got liger-sized with regularity - the steppe lion (commonly, and deceptively, called the cave lion), _Panthera spelaea_ , and the American lion, _Panthera atrox_ . The latter is commonly cited as the largest cat ever, although recent findings of _P. spelaea_ contest that claim. Either way, it seems males of both species were capable of reaching weights upwards of 400kg. The terrifying part is knowing that our ancestors lived alongside and regularly encountered these beasts. Have to say, a working knowledge of palaeontology is excellent world-building fuel lol
Fire could be the Holy Element for a Highly Advanced Civilization of Human or Human-like People, particularly when it comes to their relationship with risk and reward.
Speaking of grass roots carrying things from their roots got me thinking of the story of Midas having donkey ears, how a tree who's roots touched the words of a man confessing what he knew leading the tree itself to repeat his words. Maybe a setting could involve magic users seeking out sites of old civilizations and communing with the grass, that has been firmly rooted into the ancient structures and bones of the lost people, in order to gain ancient knowledge. Continuing the video, it seems you also came to a similar conclusion with ancient trees lol
What I think would be interesting is to have baboons of Border human line intelligence and they work with humans to survive in the end of their own tribal conflicts
That they would! However I’m also wondering how large weather manipulation would affect the overall environment of the Savannah? Weather systems that are in place are very important for the equilibrium of the environment.
@@ronecotex your original comment and my question actually did provide some world building ideas for my own world. With a Coaltion war of several Savannah based city states against a larger polity that is actively heavily manipulating the weather system to benefit their civilization. Which comes at the expense of the other city states having increased droughts, wild fires and soil erosion due to the other polity. Another idea is that there is a compact of weather manipulation rules and etiquette that several Savannah based societies have to abide by, that way to avoid said war in my first scenario. Both could hold so many stories within that relate to the idea of large scale weather manipulation and it’s impact on not only the environment of the Savannah, but of the civilizations that live there.
What happened to be interesting creature for the setting is something do Stripes like a zebra but it's horns like like a ram it's all black with gold stripes
I got sick of all fantasy humans being some form of medieval European, so I decided the humans in my world are based on savanna cultures of east Africa. It makes more sense to me, since that's where we evolved, right?
Interestingly, there's recent research that has found that Humans likely came from two or more locations, one being Africa. And it makes a lot of sense since the studies are quite detailed. If you're interested try searching up African fantasy books, or mythology, religions, and history and so on. It will help with worldbuilding and for entertainment. There's websites like fantasynamegenerator that you may find useful for character and location names. They have categories for real world subjects and fantasy subjects.
