Why Scania created the legendary Scania V8 engine

This historical film tells the story of why Scania developed the first Scania V8 engine, the DS14, in the 1960s. When the Swedish authorities raised the speed limit and maximum gross weight permitted for heavy trucks, it created the need for a new, more powerful engine. Scania's engineers met that need with the now-legendary 350 horsepower V8 engine. More than half a century later, the Scania V8 remains a powerful tool for the most demanding transport operations. This is where that legend began.

I started driving in the early seventies and within a short while I was on international work...I drove Volvo F89s and Scalia 140s, both great trucks and light years ahead of rest...The Volvos were nice trucks to drive and very comfy for the time, but the Scania was just that step further bigger cab but not as comfortable...I remember parking for the night in Germany at an Autohof Volvo F89 ,so good meal and a few beers and off to bed...Well nature took its course and I woke up to water the horse at about 3am, and got out in just my underpants I knew I wouldn’t be long as I was parked beside a grassy strip...So job done and went to get back in the cab, it was about minus 6c when I pushed the button on the door handle the f#####g thing was frozen solid...Panic stations set in , the thought of going into the Autohof garage section dressed as I was did not appeal🙈...Luckily I thought of the towing pin in the front bumper, I took this out and whacked the button and luckily it opened I had to start the engine to warn the cab and thaw me out🌞...So here we are in 2020 and I still do international work with my own truck now it’s a Volvo FH540 6 Axles with a reefer, although I might get an S650 Scania next time...Thankfully I only work 8 months of the year taking April through July off, I carry Mussels from Ireland to Holland load fruit/vegetables/flowers back to Ireland...5 day week with no stress as it’s an easy run, but not bad for a guy of 68...I did retire but got bored and While I don’t need the money as I’ve good pensions it’s nice to keep active...This film has been enlightening for me and brought back many memories...

I’ve been driving a 1976 Mercedes Benz T2 back in 2008 with a mirrored half synchronised gearbox and trailer for a danish company and it wasn’t without problems. Once I was stopped for some diesel and a break and the S+^*%ing fuel tank just dropped straight to the floor as I was refuelling so I took some cargo straps and mounted the s*^#%ing tank back on the frame of the truck. I don’t like Mercedes but the comfort was top notch. I’ve also had some clutch problems in terms of I was boarding the ferry from Germany to Denmark and the clutch pedal went to the floor and I had to stop and get towed off the ramp and spend the weekend in Germany. I’ve now stopped driving trucks but I miss it the freedom and to see new places and people every day. But you Dermont are a legend hats off to you. I wish the time you could sit down and talked to a fellow trucker over a meal comes back nowadays everything is about stress and to do as many stops as possible in a day.

@airindiana Unless you're only joking, I can still give a short explanation. They put observers in the shed in the back, to inform the people in the truck cabin when a car was about to pass the truck. They counted the number of cars passing by and the time it took to pass the truck, also if the car driving by did so in a dangerous manner. They started a truck once every hour and drove for 300km. The conclusions of the traffic tests were that trucks driving too slow, especially uphill, disturbed the rhytm of the traffic too much and that it would increase traffic safety if the trucks had stronger and better engines. A stronger engine would ensure maintained speed even in slopes. Increased torque also meant the drivers didn't have to shift gears as much. This also helped the traffic rhytm in heavy traffic inside cities. All in all, stronger truck engines with better torque would both ensure better traffic safety and as a bonus create faster hauling missions.

Volvo and Scania are light years ahead of everyone else. The others only think of low Co2 at plain highway while Volvo and Scania (with 700+hp engines) make reliable engines that lasts and can pull you up any hill with a fully loaded 62 ton road train with relative ease. A smaller and less powerful engine will release less dangerous gasses but a 12 or 13L I6 with les than 500hp is just not enough to reliable pull a 62ton (or 64 ton) lumber truck up the hills of smaller gravel roads in the middle of the forest, where I live. You need at least 600hp to make it and to keep a higher average speed. A low power engine will ultimately cause more harm to the environment than a high power engine if they were both to drive the same narrow gravel road with a full load because of slower speeds so the engine is running for way much longer and has to fight way much more to be able to make it up steep hills. Even driving a Volvo FH440 home was a challenge and many times I had to shift down to 2 1/2 to be able to make it up the hills (this truck only weighed 23 tons then and without a trailer) but with a Scania R580, R730 and a Volvo FH540 it as not a problem and they ran smoothly.

Interesting commentary. It's curious now to see that truck speeds were considered to be too low in urban areas, so making them faster would improve safety. When really, the problem was impatient car drivers unable to deal with going slowly due to the truck in front of them. Now we are trying to reduce speeds for all vehicles in urban areas, to make things safer for pedestrians and cyclists. All very interesting.

The Scania V8 was originally designed by Mack and Mack was sharing technology with Scania. Mack wanted the Scania direct injection technology. I prefer 2stroke Detroit Diesels. They were fitted to FTF trucks. We used to have them in the Dutch army, they were used to pull lowloader trailers with Leopard2 tanks as cargo. Because those Detroit Diesels are 2stroke engines they have 2x the nummer of combustions at any given rpm. It makes them sound like they are screaming. DD made them in all kinds of sizes, inline and V block. It's a shame these engines are NOT able to meet modern emissions regulations.

350hp being a huge amount of power for a truck in 1970, modern top of the line Volvo or Scania having 650-750 hp, these things don't even slow down on the average hill with 50 tons. Higher allowed speeds of up to 90 km/h and the introduction of longer and heavier combinations asked for more power, on some roads in Sweden a sort of road trains of up to 32 m (110 ft) in length and a weight of 80 metric tons are allowed, while the standard Swedish extra long combination of 25 m and 60 t has been approved in more European countries now. But even with the heavier weights power is around 10 hp per ton now compared with the 7 hp per ton which was an improvement then. I remember in the early nineties when these East European trucks started flooding the Autobahnen in Germany after the fall of the iron curtain, those were of east European makes like Liaz, Tatra or Roman and those had only 180-200 hp, those trucks slowed down to almost jogging pace on long 5% gradients which caused really dangerous situations, best then was to avoid the right lane completely on climbs with everything being not an underpowered truck.

For example here in South Africa the speed limit is 100kph on the highways, 80kph on the rural/backroads and 40kph in towns (for big rig trucks the speed limit for cars is about 20kph above that). And I love Scania but don't really have any experience with them as my employer doesn't have the funds for Scania trucks my experience is limited to a 1984 Tata that has about 150 hp and I'm not sure of the torque.

Europe wide it is 90kmh as all trucks over 3tonne have tachographs limiting them to 90. But that speed is only permitted on dual carriageways and motorways. 80kph is the norm elsewhere unless signed for 70 and 50 for urban areas..

So the answer is basically they needed higher power, and back then it was impossible to reach with the six cylinder engines. And because above six cylinders, the engine would be too long with inline construction it was ideal to use the V design. Scania wasn't the only one of course, but most of the manufacturers found out how to make a powerful enough I6 engine for the 2000s, but for some reason Scania kept their V8s.

When the Swedes started driving on right side of the road and why does they stopped driving on left side like in GB?
@donkmeister
@donkmeister 4 года назад
Some time in 1967. Everyone had to stop driving at a specific time (I want to say 11pm) and couldn't drive again until an hour later. In that hour, signs were changed/rotated, or in some cases the new signs were uncovered. Why? The two reasons I was told were 1) all the countries Sweden shared a land border with had already changed to driving on the right so it simplified the border crossing and 2) Swedes often bought their cars outside of Sweden (tax? Dunno) so most Swedish cars were already LHD. As anyone who has tried driving an RHD car in Europe or an LHD car in the UK will know, having the steering wheel on the "wrong" side makes overtaking a bit of a challenge. If you have a willing passenger they can take a look for you, or if the situation permits you can look down the nearside of the vehicle before overtaking it, but it's not ideal. So having the steering wheel on the correct side for the side of the road you drive on is safer.

triple driver yup ! It was the v8 mandator engine . When British Leyland was formed , they ditched that engine as it was problematic . The trouble with it was that the main crankshaft bearings weren’t big enough and they were prone to failure . They sold the patents for that engine to Scania , who fitted bigger bearings , and the rest is history !
