Secreting organs are something that is often forgotten in a homemade diet, yet they’re one of the most important components! People new to raw feeding also experience confusion with secreting organs vs muscular organs. I hope this video can clear up that confusion!

There are a lot of RU-vidrs who talk about raw feeding, but you are maybe the only one who goes into so much depth and also never talks down to us or rambles on and on. You get straight to the point and always provide a feel-good, motivating video. I swear I go out to the grocery store every time I see your videos.

Hi! I just discovered your channel today, and practically binged all your videos (I love the cinematography, btw)! They're super informative and helpful. My family is trying to switch our senior dog (lots of skin allergies) from her current diet of a high-end kibble + some cooked muscle/organ meats to a homemade raw/semi-raw diet. We also have a cat that I recently adopted and would eventually love to have on a raw diet (he was a kibble addict, but I've finally transitioned him to wet food after over 2 months!). I'm building a meal plan off your videos, but I was wondering what your opinion on a 80/10/5/5 meal + vegetable puree + canine supplement (dog multivitamin + mineral) diet? I'm a little nervous about adding supplements myself (without a doggy supplement pill)--do you have recommendations on where I can go to find the daily vitamin/mineral intake amounts? So far I've gotten the iodine amounts from a previous video of yours, but am a little lost on the other minerals/vitamins. Thank you!!
@PawsofPrey
@PawsofPrey 3 года назад
Hello! So multivitamins are kind of a scam lol. Not harmful but not a magic pill to just balance an entire meal. If you watched my supplements video and are still a little confused, perfectly rawsome goes over all of the essential nutrients that a dog needs and where it can be sourced from. A lot is already in the bone/muscle meat/organs, but others come from outside fresh whole food sources if you can't feed whole prey (whole prey is balanced on it's own) tinyurl.com/yyotrcj8

@@PawsofPrey Omg that's good to know!! Today is my dog's first day on raw, and she LOVES her meals (she used to have cooked muscle meat + organs with her kibble, but she seems satiated in a new way). I would just keep trying with cutting it up super small or making a puree and mixing it into the food! Cooking does destroy some nutrients but it's better than nothing for sure. Huh, that's strange. That's a hip and joint supplement. Usually given to older dogs but I mean it doesn't seem harmful or anything to give at young ages. Looks like it just contains MSM, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and vitamin C, which are fine to feed with a raw diet.

180 bucks of cheapest meats and organs at the supermarket lasts my 40lb dog 9 months. she regularly fasts about 2 days beteween meals. also sometimes i leave meat out in a zip lock bag until it gets slimy and rotten. this keeps her gut strong and healthy. she is 10 years old and has the looks and playfullness of a puppy.. trust me ,fasting your dog is KEY to keeping it healthy.. dogs should only eat equivilent to the energy they put out. lazy dogs eat less and active dogs eat more.

When a carnivore hunt their prey, which part would they eat first ? Every single carnivore would eat organs first, that's mean their ratio would be more than 10%. Even some of them are only getting organs without muscle meat or bones in one meal when there is a competitor or they eat in packs, the first one to eat would get organs and the last to feed would get what's left ( Bone & Muscle Meat ). I don't believe in 80 / 10 / 10 Organs should be more than 10% Including Heart, Lung, Gizzard, Offal, Tripe and Bit of Bone. Ideally cut the lean muscle meat portion and give heart, lung and gizzard ( i would say because heart, gizzard and lung consider as a muscle meat even tho it's an organ, these 3 should be a must included like liver and per take in that 80 % part ) with offal, tripe and bone instead of giving 80 % of pure lean muscle meat ( because some people really just give 80 % of pure lean muscle meat ). * Offal in here means mixed of other organs like liver, brain, kidney, spleen, pancreas, testicle and tongue.

I have a question, when feeding meat does it has to be grassfed organic? Does fish has to be wildcaught? Do i have to feed kelp everyday?
@PawsofPrey
@PawsofPrey 3 года назад
It's always preferred to be grass fed or organic, but it doesn't have to be! Do the best with what you can find. This goes for fish as well. If you feed wild caught, freeze for 3 weeks. Kelp should be fed daily if you feeding your pet's daily intake. Sometime that number is so small that's not possible, it that case some owners will give a larger dosage that equals what they would need that whole week, therefor only feeding once a week.

This kind of topic can really stress a new comer. I follow the rule so lightly i been able to find more things now. I still hvent found spleen, panc, I did find a goat leg at a asian market and i chopped it up and used it for my dog to clean her teeth. She didnt try to chew it till meat was gone which is when i threw it away. It was pricy 23$ but i got about 6 cuts out of it. So 4 dollars a treat if bought separate which doesn't sound as bad now especially for being raw. And those raw websites r nuts they r way too expensive. I feed 2 dog's with 65$ for 2 weeks and thats not being tight i could spend less if i was tight. They charge 80$ to feed a 55lb dog for 1 week. For rich people if u ask me

It seems like you are really missing the forest for the trees. You are talking about the “essential nutrients” a dog needs, then don’t even mention the three big macros. Proteins, fats, carbs. I’m not saying don’t feed your animal these secreting organs. I have no doubt that they are healthy choices and are a good source of micronutrients. But at the end of the day, it’s the big 3 that count. And these secreting organs are still primarily made of protein and fat. I’m sure the dog will be just fine with or without them.
@PawsofPrey
@PawsofPrey 2 года назад
Protein and fat is abundant in raw diets. Other than keeping them in their ideal percentages, there's really no need to make a video to remind people that that they need to be added in. The reason secreting organs are highlighted is because they provide essential nutrients that their bodies need to function (iron, copper, B vitamins, vitamin A, etc) muscle meats alone are not going to meet their recommended allowances of these nutrients.
@smorgan125
@smorgan125 2 года назад
@@PawsofPrey I seriously doubt that muscle meats alone are not going to meet their recommended portions of these micronutrients. For example, people make the same arguments against the keto/carnivore diet. Yet, I can eat literally just steak for days on end and feel healthy as ever. It's really not that complicated. All of the essential nutrients and vitamins can be found in the meat alone. In a dogs case, the meat and the bone.
@PawsofPrey
@PawsofPrey 2 года назад
@@smorgan125 They unfortunately will not. For example, a diet of beef, pork, and chicken muscle meats will be low in EPA+DHA, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, manganese, iodine, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin B 2, 5, 12, and 9. Many raw feeders (including myself) have made spreadsheets that look at nutrition data of meats, organs, bone, and seafood and compare them to the nutritional needs (established by NRC, AAFCO, and FEDIAF) of a pet per their species, age, sex, and alter status.
@smorgan125
@smorgan125 2 года назад
@@PawsofPrey So how did dogs survive on just kibble then? Does kibble provide a balanced micronutrient profile? I'm not arguing that these secreting organ meats aren't nutritious and beneficial for the dogs. I fully agree that they are. I'm not trying to criticize your work here either as I think you are doing an excellent job explaining the diet. I'm just saying that I think the dog will be perfectly healthy with or without the secreting organs and liver. Obsessing over the micronutrient profile of a dog is what makes this process so intimidating. Beginners should just stick to basics first, making sure the dog is receiving adequate portions of protein and fats. Even a very basic raw food diet is still going to be many times better than the kibble.
@PawsofPrey
@PawsofPrey 2 года назад
@@smorgan125 Kibble is fortified with each essential nutrient if the ingredients in the kibble aren't providing them. Take a look at that long list of nutrients on the bag/can haha. And I get where you coming from. The diet doesn't have to be completely balanced to the very gram every single day of their life, but if certain minerals/vitamins are not being provided to them long-term, heath issues will arise. This was confirmed by clinical trials/studies and are all in the NRC's book "Nutrient Requirements for Cats and Dogs"

@PawsofPrey
@PawsofPrey 3 года назад
The entire body of an animal is essentially safe to feed (under the circumstances that it's an animal raised for human consumption if store bought, or frozen solid for 3 weeks if wild caught). In the wild, wolves and big cats don't leave one part remaining because they know it's unsafe - other than the GI tract of course, which can hold a lot more parasites and bacteria as well as feces. These would probably be my last pick when chosing a secreting organ just because it's more difficult to get and I don't know what it's providing, but it's still worth of feeding for variety's sake.
