I moved from USA WEST COAST about 1 year ago with $20k to Nigeria. I started a transport business, paid rent on a place for 4 years, furnished place, got my business set up , legal docs, licensed and registered and I still have $10k in the bank. I have been living off proceeds from my business every since. Make a solid business plan, live standard but comfortable and remember this is not ABROAD and temper your spending. I live with the locals, I go to the market and I cook every day!!!! It is easy if you really desire change from the fuckery of USA/UK/CANADA. PS: I came here with 5 suitcases!!!

I agree with you Nkem, drop the tourist act when you move to Africa live like a local, cook your own food at home rent a furnished place for your first year in Africa so you can get a good feel of you new surroundings before attempting to buy land or a house.. Best to know someone there in the place you plan to move to, or even better have family or good friends already living there.. Your move to Africa will be as easy or as hard as you make it.. Drop the Usa/Uk/Canada western attitude of Me Me Me Demand Demand Demand. Your new life will be what you make it to be..

Sometime that's how it is ! ... What work is available to pay you enough to have security .. your wages in any job in Africa is generally only a proportion of what the job value is... But of you rent tamd work you will understand the cost of life ! .. work is not always available !!! Hence buy a cheep land and build a cheep house and do Airbnb to begin ! .. try find internet job or design a course and put on eureka or a Coursera and hope for the best ... Plant your food and make as much things by hand as possible and take your time to enjoy !

People can downplay the financial commitment in moving back to Ghana all they want, but I'm glad you are sharing your experiences with great honesty. Like you said, plan, plan, be strategic, take care of the details and above all have some contingencies in place. To be broke while in Africa is not for the faint of hearts. The same thing applies to any country or when people move from the Northeastern states to southern states in the USA. They are drawn to bigger cheaper homes until reality hits them when they find out there are no jobs and what's there pays less inline with the low standards of living. People also move with debt. Wrong strategy. Money is always security no matter where people relocate. Power outages etc. wouldn't bother those who grew up in countries where that's common. They learn to improvise.

The average Ghanaian in Ghana does not have 30k in their account and they live comfortably. But when we move/ travel to Ghana, for some reason; we loose more funds. It is because of friends and family always depending on us to pay for everything and everywhere we go. In 2017, I was only 22 when I traveled to Ghana and stayed for only two months. I lost all of my little savings due to staying with family and being taken advantage of. I will urge those going to Ghana to be READY. However, if you want to move to Ghana, the best thing to do before making the big move, is to buy a house or rent an apartment with 2-5 years advance. Be sure to also have a secured job opportunities or a business that you own. live within your means. I can’t imagine loosing 30k, hmmm.

For me, the advice would be to get newcomers to link up with local folks in order to gradually blend and understand the economy. no it's not. Moving from US/EU to Africa is not simply and your access to various resources could be limited. So here what your missing in you 1-2-3 4: medical unless your job is giving you medical, how do you plan to seek treatment 5: tax , who paying ? do you or employer 6: travel , if an emergency comes up how do to travel? Tickets are pricey fwiw form Africa to any where else. Even intra continental travel is pricey and unreliable unless your on national airline like Ethiopian Air. 7: is the political air stable? how's the gov working ? how the police ? 8: Take all of the things you have right out of your door, you will probably not have these available in Africa and then in limit qty 9: resources can be a struggle listen to her, water/electricity is iffy at best. Don't be surprise if it's out for 1-2hours or 1-2-days. Brown-out are like the normal. 10: transporation to include visa and residence permits , are time consuming 11: if you had kids, what schooling needs do you have? what schooling needs to you have or desire ? 12: if you have special medical needs, again what do you have locally available? doe it meets your need? Will insurance cover it ? 13: opening a bank account, how do you expect your banking needs to work ? 14: if you are working abroad and expect to come back, how do you expect to be paid, any conversion issues if you want to convert to EU or USD I can add more things but those are the few I added that I experience. This lady is ghanian and ran into issues. A foreigner is really going to have issues unless you have a local guide. I think if you are single and young , probably much easier than a married couple or with a family. It is NOT like relocating down the block or around the corner.

And the last two thing to add to my list if you moving to a country where business is not done in your native language , you might want to take some lessons in basic communication. I'm studying Portuguese at this moment so when I go back I hope to have a better grasp in that lingua. And if your American you might want to registered with your local consulate/embassy office or if the consular service are handle in a neighbor country registered with them at that location. Just get a local telephone number and keep it during your stay. Very lovely lady. Towards the end of the video and the question about "what she doesn't like about Ghana" she hit on a very important point. Ghana doesn't have resources for people like unemployment, social security, welfare if the person is in dire need of food and financial assistance this is one of the reasons why so many Africans migrate to western countries because western countries are more generous and many of the African migrants are poor or simply "escaping." I don't see a person leaving the western world to retire in Africa for example, unless they have millions or nearly that amount because if something happens they will receive no assistance whatsoever. I think only 4 countries offer unemployment protections in Africa In Sub-Saharan Africa, Cabo Verde, Mauritius and South Africa offer unemployment protection and those are just recent incentives.

This is one perspective- thanks for sharing. If you're going to Ghana for the very first time and you have no Ghanaian heritage, you will certainly have a different perspective and will need some supports in doing so. I certainly had some level of culture shock the first I visited as a Californian. But my second trip? Things were more familiar. I don't think people should be encouraged to move to Ghana outright. Go and see. It's not an easy place to live if you're accustomed to the comforts of the developed world and if you're not comfortable with the reserved nature of Ghanaians, who are polite but not outwardly friendly or expressive, per se. Nobody just strikes up conversations with you, for instance, especially when they know you're a foreigner.

A honest and eye opening video,the lesson to learn from this is we need more financial discipline. 30k is a lot of money,but without planing and frugality it will be exhausted before you say jack Robinson. Anyone planning on moving to Africa should make sure they buy a house first or at the least lease for whatever duration they intend to stay. Don't stay with family/friends and also I know flexing in Africa is more fun,but control the way you spend when you go out, and also most importantly if possible buy a car or in some cases rent one for the time you are staying, I would rather buy one than rent. And finally have a stead source of income,a job or business. And you will enjoy and avoid issues.

Maybe we should consider other countries than ghana. Ghana isn't the only country in Africa. Furthermore all of us don't even have ancestry there. And then beyond that even if you do. Why limit yourself by where your ancestors traveled. I'm sure if you could speak with your ancestors they would tell you don't limit yourself. Travel everywhere in Africa. Live anywhere in Africa. Your ancestors where travelers that's how they ended up in West Africa from the Great rift Valley. If you think you belong to a certain Tribe. Do your research on your tribes ancestral lands. That territory probably crossed national bordes within Africa because those modern countries didn't exist. Also, don't think just because you in Africa everybody is your friend. Your highest sense of duty is to yourself and its the same for them. You can lose all your savings over paying for everything. And they'll move on to the next African American.

@@NanaAshanti AAs don't have to confine themselves to one place. Have you ever seen Africans who move to the US limiting themselves to one State. Nope, you find them in every state including Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The reason Ghana appears to be the only country that has reached out to "AAs" is because the majority of slaves to the Americas came from the Gold Coast. While other countries in Africa cannot lay claim to that fact, they are equally open to everyone whether it's for relocation, business, tourism, education, careers etc. Its silly for AAs to confine themselves to just one tiny country. Ten years down the line, the result will be an influx and congestion. Modern day motherland is for all of us. Whether you are a Jamaican, Haitian, AA, or African from any part of Africa, You can live anywhere you want as long as you obey the laws of that country and feel safe about living there. There's tons of opportunities in countries like Rwanda, Ethiopia, Uganda, Namibia, Botswana, Tanzania etc. Countries like Kenya and South Africa where you find a very diverse population of foreigners from Europe, Asia, Middle East, America are not cheap but that's where they have wider opportunities, international organizations, good schools, business opportunities, tourism weather etc.

The reason why people move to Ghana and have to go back to the West is because they live as if it is an extended holiday. - Rent in a place like East Legon or other upscale area - Shop only in supermarkets - Visit resorts often to ‘experience’ all Ghana has to offer - Refuse to live like a local to make their money stretch

Ironically, this is "normal" in the West. So i don't think people mean to live above their means. They live like they would in the West and discover after a while, that you can't do that in Ghana unless you are a high earner. Its a learning process.

I am currently invested in an Accra based business. Unfortunately, Ghana, like most African countries, is still developing the infrastructure for a Consumer based Knowledge economy. What that means is that consumer and merchant credit is non-existent for the most part, rudimentary distribution networks, little to no real advertising and marketing activity as we know it in the West, particularly so now with the disruption of the rudimentary Television and Radio infrastructure with the rudimentary Internet. And let's not get into "business structures" and general "transactional intelligence" that business people in the west take for granted, it's not the same understanding or appreciation for the concepts of "limited liability", "fiduciary duty", etc. And I get it. I know for a fact that a Postal, Electrical, Water & Sewage Grid for the whole country would be much more valuable than an Esports Team. However, most Western based entrepreneurs have what I call "liberal arts brains", they need the advanced civic infrastructure that the West has in order to really get their groove on. So for now, Esports is what it has to be.

Very well put. That's why planning in depth is crucial. Living in Africa and thriving takes strategic and deep business planning. Its not a joke. The bare brains of ordinary education does not cut it at all. Serious strategic business strategies are needed along with being shrewd. Its not a game.

Where is the National Vision for Ghana? Ghana and ECOWAS should be building National Laboratory's that are mandated to develop the critical technologies necessary for the Nation to prosper. A partnership between National Laboratory's, Universities, and The Business Community must be developed. Rapid advancement can only happen with a plan and a vision. Africans must master reverse engineering of existing technologies. A National Power Grid must be developed etc.

@@veraaddoyobo8482 The world health organization has nothing to do with technological research. The Government allocates resources for scientific research. Here in the United States we have what's known as "The Iron Triangle" its a collaborative effort that's made up of National Laboratory's, Universities, and Industry. They work closely together to advance scientific research and innovation in multiple areas of human endeavor. ECOWAS Nations could also create a National Laboratory where all member nations benefit from the technological breakthroughs made at the Laboratory's. Just like the CERN collider project. Look at how many nations are working together in that project. National Laboratory's are critical for scientific and engineering advancements.

You need to speak about the corruption as I watched a video where it was spoken about at length, and it is what put me off wanting to move there - having to give bribes to police officers, government officials - etc. No from me - The Gambia has the same issue. I'm now looking at Namibia and my mother's country of birth in the Caribbean.
@NanaAshanti
@NanaAshanti Год назад
Everywhere in Africa has this issue. It's a cultural practice of giving gifts to people you meet that has morphed into an illegal thing of bribery. If that's what's putting you off, Africa might not be the place for you. I will say though, it's mostly lightweight cash, pennies & a dollar really. Better to take a trip & experience it yourself. It's barely a bother.

All respect due to the motherland countries such as Ghana; however, when you take a country that first allows their own income producing manufacturers/industries to be overtaken by foreign state organizations; subsequently then inclined their own country men & women to have to go overseas and work within the same industries that was initially dropped and neglected 'back home' (by same mother country state government); consequently, that country has a serious national problem. All said, this vlogger hostess is correct, as applying to most things, planning is a key to a successful life change.
