I salute you both. Wish i can do the same. I know this what I want to do but the noise of life is pulling me back every now and then. I know that I am in a battle where I need to shut off these noises and be more disciplined. Will leave this here and visit this video again some time later to see what happened since I typed this:) Sending love to all

People ditched traditional cable programming and went to youtube because youtubers were more relatable to the average person. Today it has become corporatized, over produced, and even a bit pretentious. RU-vidrs have become just as out-of-touch as their cable TV program predecessors.

I am glad to read this comment. Likes and views and subscribers. Sponsorships and brand deals and ad revenue. It's all numbers. And whenever get focused on the numbers as a bottom line, we change. Im glad you pointed this out. I wantnto stay authentic in my own channel. After 4 or 5 years of listening to RU-vid help channels, I had become programmed and desired what we are talking about. I don't really want all of that. The prospect of it being my income stream began to take over. That's too much attention for me. I want to grow slow.

I believe it’s because we saw a few very renown creators express the same concerns and RU-vidrs are finally trying to shred light on it. We are finally understanding how the platform has shifted from making your own creative videos to having to sort of conform and take it on as a business and the cons that come with that.

I’m in my 50’s and found your channel, not sure which one now that you have these 2 however during pandemic especially I watched you a lot, I admire how articulate you are and would recommend your content to our own children. I recently came across your dad on YT, your family is creative, talented and such good humans. This video speaks to me in a whole different way because last year I quit my day job of 31 years to pursue YT. It took me 6 months to get the courage to even begin. This video was encouraging. Thank you for always being so transparent. I’m going to keep going.

What I'm learning is that I need to infuse more of my personality into my content instead of trying to come up with the perfect niche & formula; it's too much pressure and takes away from the entire reason of starting in the first place. I've been working on some new content ideas that I'll be rolling out later next week and I'm feeling so much more aligned with my path and just having fun & enjoying my journey every step of the way! 💃🏻

I truly appreciate your sincere talk, from to the content to the delivery. It's so nice to see something that's not overproduced and at the same time gave me so much value, while also being really easy to watch. I could see myself watching youtube videos like this every day because it is, like a friend talks to me. I've been thinking of doing this on my channel. It's just somewhat tough, since I'm so used to talk in a more lecturing way. But somehow I'll get there (or somewhere else :)). Thanks!

This was a really insightful watch. I've been thinking a lot about trend cycles recently, both in this new wave of creators and in other aspects of life, and it was really helpful to hear those thoughts reassured and built upon from someone in the place that you're in, so thank you for sharing that! I also particularly enjoyed the story towards the end and the perspective it provided. I'm really enjoying the experimentations with new styles as well as these less produced chats. Appreciate your work!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! The value of RU-vid for a creator and a viewer can be so different that I think what really helps guide long-term success is when the chart of what you value creating lines up with what viewers find valuable. If you create for an audience's values rather than your own it seems like it would be hard to not burn out.

I love to watch low production videos like (silent) vlogs. It feels like the "old" youtube back in the days where everything still was authentic and real and you felt like you could connect with the person making the video, have a glimpse of their life and/or see what their everyday life looks like. I understand that this might be boring to some people to some extend, but for me this content soothes me. It's kind of like a resting pole in an internet that became way too much profit oriented and more fake from day to day.

I hear you, Sam. Your videos have beautiful content. Since you want better numbers, did you happen to ask your viewers how they might want things changed? For example, I watched a few of your gorgeous and well produced videos. I wanted relaxation in this stressful world and not having to think. You are a beautiful person who I would love to listen to on any day - but when viewing a video labeled ‘relaxation’ I would be looking for no vocals and just music, (in my opinion.) Your intuition & data from your viewers can best guide you in the direction you think is right. - Signed, Some Rando On the Internet Who Has No Business Giving Unsolicited Advice

I've been working hard on getting my channel monetized, and I really hope that this year will finally be that year. Lately my channel has been getting more love and it really helps me stay motivated. I've also been focused on being more consistent lately and have noticed that with every video (or at least most videos) I make, my editing skills get better, along with the way I tell stories. It's a really fun and interesting journey. I don't really have a "niche" because I really just want to make videos about the things that I'm passionate about. As much as I get worried that my videos are too different from each other, that's just who I am and am trying to embrace my "eclecticness" haha. Wishing the best for everyone who is working on their creative journey! 🥰❤️

This isn't limited to RU-vidrs. A lot of people, myself included, are feeling a general fatigue and are thinking of switching up the way they earn their money and/or live their lives. We're much more aware that we don't have to be the same versions of the people we always assumed we were or thought we needed to be.

Here's my take from someone that is not a RU-vidr. After the pandemic, people crave the intimate human interaction, but also love the fact that they can work hybrid and from home and get away from being around too many people at the office etc. So the intimate style of video, like this one, where you feel like the person is having a deep conversation with you maybe scratches this itch.
@user-ex3mx7hk4l
@user-ex3mx7hk4l 4 месяца назад
I agree - To me it seems connection with others and valuable information is what people want most. They want to trust the person delivering the goods. This is why AI, although incredibly powerful, will never replace real human beings. The pandemic likely heightened our need for connection, but the truth is it has always existed because we are social animals. The more people can see who we really are - and the degree to which we put forth our best selves in the effort to serve them (while avoiding burn out & not overextending ourselves) - the better. 👍

I agree with a lot of your points. However, some of the high production value stuff looks over polished, and the people presenting too shiny. The over polished content often falls into the trap of representing the unattainable, the too perfect or too good to be true. I also think there is something to be said for consistency as many people watch a channel over and over simply because they know what they are going to get; kind of like watching a familiar movie. In this case often the production value is far less important. The flip side is, that those who present honesty and real life ‘tell it like it is’ content, in reality often start over sharing and spilling to much tea, or spelling out TMI. Many viewers don’t like that, as they are looking for friends through the screen, not over-sharers. Finally, I think there is a difference between educating the viewer and preaching at them. At the point those RU-vidrs start forcing their ethics and opinions via the screen onto their viewers, they split their viewership between those who go along wholeheartedly and those become disappointed or disillusioned and quickly move on. I think many would-be RU-vid educators end up falling into the trap of preaching or developing excessive ego’s that eventually lead to them losing subscribers. Finally, production values are all very well, but if the content provided is nonsensical, childish, idiotic, inane or inaccurate then people will also unsubscribe or move on very quickly.

Excellent points! A ‘preaching’ tone can turn people off as well as literally preaching the word about your faith can. My Mother always said when it comes to talking to people DON’T talk about money, sex, or religion! But when we really believe in something , we must integrate it into our platform if we are going to be true to ourselves. For example, I struggled with the idea of integrating my faith with my business. But after Jesus totally turned around a crisis in my life, I made a serious promise that I would stand for Him. I have to honor the promise I made and I am willing to have tomatoes thrown at me: ‘I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.’ - Philippians I’m standing for what I believe in and what I believe is right. You can’t make ALL the people happy ALL the time. No matter WHAT stand you take there will always be the mockers and the critics. Among that group somewhere are YOUR people. Hopefully I can help people with my content as they take what they can use and leave the rest. 👍

They're quitting because YT is screwing channels they don't like. It's so bad that even other channels have noticed YT is messing with my channel! In fact, another channel sent me proof! He caught YT removing likes from my videos. As a content producer himself, this greatly concerned him. He took a screen shot of one of my vids, clicked on the description, went back to the thumbnail view and took another screen shot. RU-vid had removed at least 20 likes away from my video simply by him clicking on my video's description! He did that to three of my videos, and on all three, YT removed likes from the video, so he stopped. He took before and after pictures of all three videos. I called YT and they said it was impossible so I sent them the screen shots and they back-pedaled. They said they picked up "spam" on my channel so that's why they removed likes! They are straight up, bold faced, liars! I exclaimed that I'm a small channel and don't even monetize! They said it doesn't matter. If they see spam, they remove it. Trust me, no one would spam my little channel. If I had a spammer, my channel would be bigger! I assured them I wasn't being spammed and demanded that they restore the likes that my viewers had given my videos in good faith. It's not as if I had such a grand amount of likes to begin with! Also, because those likes improve my channel's social proof and analytics. As a small channel, I needed them. RU-vid refused. I continue making videos because I hate evil and don't want them to win. Plus, I'm committed to providing helpful content. If you want to see my before and after screen shots, let me know and I'll send them to you.

Hey Nathaniel 👋, I find it interesting that you talk about this because I also noticed that a lot of RU-vidrs I follow are either not as active as they were before or seemingly no longer active at all. I remember when I started watching certain RU-vidrs like yourself, I felt as if I’ve gotten used to anticipating at least a video or two either every 2-3 weeks or every month or so. (A weird way of describing it, I know 😅🤣) Nowadays, some of the RU-vidrs I follow who still post videos from time to time are you, Lana Blakely, Malama Life, Lavendaire, Kelly Stamps, Life of Riza, & Colt Kirwan. I’m not sure if you agree with this, but I think another reason many RU-vidrs nowadays don’t post as often as they used to may have something to do with them just wanting to take a (long) break from RU-vid and actually enjoy living life. Maybe one day, many RU-vidrs will make some kind of surprising comeback when we least expect them to. 🤣 Sending you lots of love!!! ❤️❤️❤️🤗 Ritchie P.S. I know you talked a little bit about Nathaniel Drew 4.0, but I’m curious to know if you still have plans to continue your No Backup Plan podcast and feature any guests in future episodes. 😁

Thanks for your thoughts Nathaniel, as a consumer of alot of youtube videos I can say that I actually way prefer the low production value, high intrinsic value vlog type day in the life videos or even just chit chat videos. As much as I appreciate the effort and production value that goes into a channel like LifeofRiza, when I watch video's like that it feels "over produced" and "more like a movie" than getting to connect with someone's life online. I personally don't watch youtube to watch movies but rather to learn about how different people live their lives, so that kind of "overproduced" "over cinematic" content feels a tad too much if that makes sense. I think there's a balance where just enough production value meets just enough intrinsic value and I think channels like Jusuf, Hitomi, Moya, AvaJules gets it right. But each to their own! different people enjoy different things. Thanks for sharing!

The departures, well some of them are just 'changing things up and focusing on different channels', may well just be the 7-10 year itch to do something different. Now in my middle age I have felt that several times in my life, and it's painful when you feel trapped in the grind unable to change, reinvent or move on. So factor that into your career - expect that what you do will have seasons and the next thing will grow out of the experience you have developed in the previous season. Also creativity needs sabbaticals and new inspiration to stay alive.

It’s refreshing to hear you say part of it’s luck. After going from a year where I had a video get 100,000 views and hundreds of comments to start the year and I finished the year with a few videos that got less than a hundred views I’ve really started to hate myself 😂. RU-vid is hard to figure out and it is the most humbling endeavor I’ve ever embarked on.

YT is unpredictable and the algorithm can seem so unfair. However if you have something to say I say KEEP standing on your soap box and SAY IT. Even those hundred people could have been changed by your message. In this world of ridiculous numbers, we must remember even helping ONE person learn something new is meaningful. Look at the ‘Starfish’ story. You threw one Starfish back in the ocean. That MATTERS, Jon Joseph. ❤

I think this has something to do with the fact that almost everyone is treating this as a business or as pure statistics, and honestly it's hard not to. You want more viewers more subs longer retention longer watch times and you start feeling detached from your follower and they start relating less and less to you. What once was fulfilling just stopped hitting the spot like it used to. Imo there will always be time for uprising and new content creators to shine as long as what they are making has value as you mentioned. Really well done video. I like the more relaxed and personal type of videos!

We can never lose connection with our people or we are TOAST. Part of this equation is asking them what they want for content ideas and also answering social media comments without wasting too much time. ❤

HOW TO OVERCOME IMPOSTER SYNDROME: 1. Talk back to that negative voice in your head. It never helps you to be more productive. Tell it to SIT DOWN and SHUT UP. 2. Be YOURSELF. 3. Know that true success is paved with failures along the way. It’s just the nature of the learning curve. Remember, you are not trying to be someone else. You are just trying to be the best that you can be at this particular stage in life. Know that having bad days is part of the equation. Tomorrow is always a new day to start over. Just because there are already voices out there doesn’t mean that you cannot add to the conversation. Remember that nothing is perfect in this world this side of Heaven. Good enough is good enough! The worst thing you could do, in my opinion, is try to be someone else. God made you a unique individual for a reason. He put the creativeness in your heart for a reason. You have a purpose in this world. Your job is to know who you are, and stand for what you believe in - come what may. What you can be sure of: When you go out in the arena, you WILL get your *ss kicked. You can never please all the people all the time. All you can do is your level best. If you don’t give up and keep trying to learn, you get a badge of achievement for your courage and tenacity. ❤

Ad creep is real. One became two became 10-minute "commercials". YT built on the independent creator but now they can ignore that person or even make it harder and harder to move them off the platform.

The main problem is that people desperately want others to notice them. The solution is very simple - live for yourself, not for the others and perhaps most importantly, never turn your passion into a job.

I wonder how much being on youtube just to be on youtube, how much just being a creator as a career, doesn't really make sense for a sustainable, deeply meaningful career. I think to truly offer that intrinsic value, youtubers need to develop significant expertise, skills and perspective, beyond just the ability to understand the trends and skills of youtube. I think that you're almost saying that here but I hope you look into developing a career identity/skillset that goes even further. I think that the truly best content on youtube, in my opinion, maybe not the most viral, but with a loyal and growing audience, goes beyond the trends, has a unique voice and presentation on a topic in which they have truly become experts, through study and practice over many years or even a decade or more. I think youtubers see the relatively fast and huge success of some and just try to find the formula without focusing enough on building the knowledge base for that intrinsic value. I think the bar for what is considered valuable is too low, because something can hold someone's attention and seem valuable in the moment. It is interesting and engaging, but it is sort of the junk food of entertaining in that it doesn't really have substance.
