Why Some People Find It Hard To Support Black Owned Businesses

I was riding to dinner with a friend, stuck between 2 restaurants, and an interesting conversation developed. Wanting to go to this Black owned spot that is known for great food but horrible service and Houston's, we opted to go to Houston's. But the magic was in the conversation that was had en route to Houston's as to why some Black owned businesses live up to the stigma of not being up to par.

I would like to patronize more black owned businesses. I wish black people would branch out more into more things OTHER than food though. Black people need more than just “food.” We need banks, retail stores, places to get massages etc....

Yes. so true. I work for Disney and they do NOT play when it comes to customer service. We don't even call them customers, we call them GUESTS. I have learned so much working at Disney and I know my Hookah bar will be successful when I finally bring it to fruition one of these days, because of the guest experience I have acquired at Disney. So many people have been FIRED just for not appeasing a guest at Disney. ACKNOWLEDGE EVERYONE. WHATEVER THEY WANT, MAKE IT HAPPEN (If we don't have it, grab an iPad, and search where they can find it). ANTICIPATE THEIR NEEDS

I tried to support a black owned restaurant and it took 10mins for them to greet me and take my order and 2 hours to get my food. I only waited because I had went out of my way to get there and it was a nice day so I waited with the windows rolled down. Their family was coming and ordering and getting their food immediately before myself and other customers that were already waiting for over and hour. And the food was just mediocre. I left a review of my experience and when I hear someone ask about it i tell them the same story.

You nailed it! There was a black owned soul food restaurant out in Maryland that had the best chicken and waffles, homemade cake, etc. The owner let his son and grandson take over the business and demoted the Latina girls who were previously managing the store very well. Those girls knew my name, knew what I wanted to order whenever I called, and were efficient. When the black owner let his son and grandson take over, they ran the business into the ground. The son was nasty and rude to people, and he would yell at customers. The grandson was 20 something, wore saggy pants, and would stand at the front counter with his friends (who worked with him) and they were all really loud and ghetto. They were slow in taking and filling orders, and eventually the Yelp ratings went down so low, they lost many of their long term customers who had been going there for at least 10 years. The owner eventually fired his son and grandson and tried to salvage his business, but the damage was done. Sad to report that this restaurant closed at the beginning of this year.

I literally just experienced this about a week ago. Drive 35 min to get a product (food) that was posted on their IG as on the menu and available for this particular day. Get there, was told, oh...we’on have that tuhday...ok. No problem...I just ordered something else. I paid for my order and had to WAIT 53 minutes. Never was told that it would be a minute, given an update....AND it was only TWO people head of me. Yes, my food was cooked fresh, BUT I only ordered two deviled eggs and two seafood Mac and cheese bombs. Q is right..the food is Amazing!! Hell, my 35 minute drive speaks to that, but that gives me pause every time I’ve thought about revisiting since then.

How are you going to charge me $25 if I arrive more than 15 minutes late and then you yourself show up 30-40 minutes late? Whatever standards a hair stylists expects from their clients, I hold them to those same standards!

Where is the collection plate because this was a WORD!! I can’t begin to think of how many times I have said “their customer service is horrible,but the food/product is on point.” I have to adopt the same mindset that if I will walk out or refuse to patronize big brand/retail stores for bad service I have to do the same for black owned. Now is this synopsis for all black businesses....no, but the old adage “one bad apple spoils the bunch” tends to ring true more times than not. It’s not that I don’t want to support the business. It’s that I don’t want to continue to tolerate bad service/protocol JUST because it’s a black owned. As consumers we have to start holding our own to the same standards as any other business or this type of mindset will continue and black business owners need to understand that your consumers have other options than the service you provide, so don’t treat customers as if YOU are doing US a favor simply by offering the service or product to us. Excellent video!!!

While checking out the owners insta story, I was shocked by her lack of professionalism. @CortriTrotter

I've been saying this for years. Having come from the restaurant industry and worked for both black and white owned establishments, the difference is what they call a culture, basically the same as a protocol. The white owned business DRILLED that culture in our head. Made us APART of that culture. Tested us on the culture. Had multiple levels of training in this culture. And when I tried to bring a culture into the black owned restaurants that I managed, there were ALWAYS resistant and it reflected in the service. Creating that culture takes a lot of time, money and effort. So essentially, it could come down to resources. Most black owners are hands on, from the construction to the opening, to the operation. Sometimes I think its the excitement of finishing and the time it takes to run AND OPERATE a business, they just dont make the time to invest in building that culture. In the white business and franchises, there are whole teams dedicated to building that out.

With this side hustle, time is money. I can be on another delivery order, but no I'm still at this restaurant waiting with the cashier with funky attitude, with the long nail and playing on her damn phone. Funky u and your friend hit the nail on the head! I have tried to start 2 different businesses with 2 different friends and the reason they did not take off is because in our partnership I came with the research and protocol on what you HAVE TO DO TO NOT ONLY COMPETE WITH THE COMPETITOR BUT JUST BE IN THE RACE. And the straw that broke the camels back both times was “I’m NOT GOING TO RUN OUR BUSINESS LIKE THAT WHY CANT WE DO IT THIS WAY! “ and I would scream to the top my lungs because “IT HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN TO WORK!” I could not understand why they didn’t get it and I have been trying to figure out what was it that this happened 2 times in a row with 2 different people and now y’all have found the missing piece to my puzzle! Now I know what to do! Thank you Funky and your friend! You are truly a blessing to our community!

I agree with everything that was said here. However, we also need to “reprimand” (using the wrong word here lol) black shoppers as well. As a food critic and a part time private shopper, I’ve noticed that many black customers tend to rudely and aggressively leverage or have disdain toward black establishments or black-ran establishments when that particular customer doesn’t get their way with something. For instance, protocol, policies and procedure may state something that goes against the black customer or what he or she wants, so they’ll write nasty reviews to defame the establishments or they’ll treat the staff nastily just because...I think it goes both ways between the customers and the operation of the black establishments. I say this because I can see these same customers at white establishments being told “no” about something and they will act TOTALLY different from how they acted at the black establishments....

Such a good video! I’ve struggled with guilt for my views about black owned businesses, but I’ve given them a chance and been burned before. There was a soul food takeout that I ordered on the phone only to get there and STILL have to wait and the staff was rude. A different soul food takeout wasn’t open on the days the website said they were and when you try to order certain items, they would say “we didn’t cook that today”. Then why the hell is it on the menu!?!? There used to be a black owned grocery store in my neighborhood and the prices were glaringly higher than another grocery store 2 miles down the street. The black store is gone now. Just the other day I saw this post about all kinds of black owned businesses in my state that we can support, so I started looking at the websites out of curiosity. I went to a Spa’s site that charges $95 for a 60 minute relaxation massage. Y’all, I live in Ohio, not California or New York where that price might seem more normal at a stand-alone spa and not a luxury hotel. My regular girl (white) who owns her business that I’ve been going to for about 5 years now charges $65 for a 60 minute massage. I just feel like black owned businesses often overcharge and that’s not good strategy to grow your business when I can get the same product, possibly at better quality at a lower price from the other folks.

I’m not shopping at any business who acts like my presence isn’t appreciated no matter what race runs it. I am not spending my money at any business that I can’t afford no matter what the owner’s race is. I hunted for a black person to do my nails a couple of months ago. When I say this girl’s attitude was so nasty and Idgaf’ish, I mean it to the one millionth degree. That was it with her for me. If an Asian nail tech treats me that way, I’d be done with her too. Respect and Customer skills must be up par, or I’m gone. Simple as that. I won’t be made to feel obligated to patron any business because the owner is Black.

First thing I learned in customer service was that attitude, a smile, and word of mouth will kill a business that is not already established. You can have awesome food, do hair like a beast, have great products but if your people who speak and greet the life line of your business are rude its a done deal bad review. I agree with you and have heard black business owners say "this my shit if they don't like it they can go somewhere else" and 9/10 they do and then they wonder why the business has slowed. Like sis u know 😂🤣😭

I will say as a home based business owner there are some things that I am still learning as I go. I had an influx of sales and was falling behind to the point where I thought man I wouldn’t wanna buy from me for as long as it’s taking me to get these products out. So I adapted on how to make my product quicker but with the same quality and I also called the people who’s order I was behind on and let them know what was going on and even posted what was going on not only on my business page but my personal page as well for the transparency of the fact I’m not trying to bs you and just take your money. (I’ve been making and sewing mask 😷 with built in filter pockets from start to finish and didn’t think it was going to have as bid of an out reach as it did and had also just started going back to work full time as well. But this is how I fixed it. I not only look from a business prospective but also a customer prospective as well. )

From my experiences, many black owned businesses abandon customer service. I remember an experience at a seafood restaurant in College Park, GA, that embodied the very point that you're making. They didn't take credit cards on the weekends...I'm like HUH! What successfully business in the 20th century denies their customers the right to use their credit card. When I voiced my opinion it was an all out war with the black women and her children and/or neices and nephews behind the counter. One actually came from behind the counter to fight. Needless to say I've never gone back. The restaurant is Crab Pot Louge on Goby Road in the plaza with Old National Discoumt Mall...Don't visit.

I'm a sucessful business entrepreneur, a UCLA graduate from Anderson Graduate School of Business. Four things I learned from this white establishment that carried me...and that is to equip yourself with knowledge in best business management practices: 1. Attitude determines your altitude and success. 2. Exemplary Customer Service is Revenue Assurance. 3. Know your business competitors and master their products by producing a superior grade commodity. 4. Have a robust distribution and delivery system in place. If you don't know these disciplines...learn them before starting your business and make them your core values. Failure will not be an option because knowledge is indeed empowerment.

I think the problem is that people don’t realize, or understand, the concept of options. That PEOPLE have options. My dad owned several restaurants, corner stores and night clubs when I was coming up. I understood the importance of service, GOOD service, at the age of 13 - even when my father didn’t. I came in the door putting my foot up grown folks asses. I was able to do that which my fathers heart wouldn’t allow HIM to do - have to you straighten up, or get the FUCK UP OUT THE THANG! Sometimes people have that, “You know that’s just how she is!” shit with certain black folk. We had a cook who was like that. She thrived on her reputation to “tell it like it is” and be disrespectful IMO. She was my dads childhood friend, so I couldn’t fire her.... ohhhh, but I wanted to! My dad saw that in me and it worked to his benefit because it bettered his business - and it worked to my detriment because I lost my childhood when he started to depend on me for shit that his managers SHOULD'VE been doing. He worked my ass to DEATH and I was 13, 14, 15 - 19 having grown assed men and women running away when I came into the room! “There are tables full of dishes out here and y’all sitting back here on the coolers laughing and kee kee’n?”... “Why is that lady standing in the dining room waiting for someone to seat her and there are four of y’all back here gossiping? You don’t want to work - two of y’all can go home! Clock out!”... “You don’t stand in front of this building smoking a fucking cigarette and then walk back inside and ask a customer if you can help them!” You were not arguing with customers, there was NO ONE in the restaurants, the clubs or, the stores with that dead assed, “I’m just here for a check... I don’t give a fuck about this place, myself, OR you... you can go down the street if you want to - I don’t get paid to smile or be friendly” resting bitch face - or your ass was GONE! I support black businesses- even when the prices are a little higher because, coming from a family of business owners, I get it. I understand that the corner store is going to be higher than Walmart because Walmart buys in bulk and pays .77 cents a bag for corn meal and sells it for $3.19. They make their profit 5 times over. The dude at the corner store got his shit from Sam’s club and it cost him $2.15 a bag so he has to sell it for $4.25 to make a profit and he’s only selling two bags per week, so yeah, you might not want to compare Mr Johnson’s prices to Walmart’s. It’s not the same thing. When black folk have restaurants, we buy seasoning the same way. Shit is expensive because Chili’s buys in bulk. Hattie’s Soul Food is not so, not only is Hattie paying MUCH more - Ms Hattie is seasoning the FUCK out of her greens - so she’s USING more. We don’t buy meat the same way a rib CHAIN does so we don’t get it at the same rate. Nowhere near. You have to charge more to make enough profit to pay your overhead and have something to make it worth keeping the doors open. I try to buy black as often as possible. I buy shit I don’t even NEED just because you’re black. I have tons of Shea butters, cheap assed t-shirts and, books that I’ve never read - but I bought it to support my brothers and sisters. Where I will absolutely NOT waiver is when it comes to your customer service. I don’t give AF whose name is on the business or what they look like - treat me like shit and I ain’t coming back. I have options.

I disagree with you Quentin. I don't think that black owned businesses (BOBs) abandon protocol. Many BOBs are working with less resources including training and don't necessarily know protocol or how to implement it when there are more pressing priorities like keeping the lights on and getting enough help from staff you can barely pay. This is not an excuse but a common truth for BOBs. I own two BOBs and we have excellent customer service per our customers but that's only because I came from corporate america and had a lot of work experience . I brought those best practices with me to my own business and it reflects in everything we do. Many of our BOBs have owners who have never worked in large organizations with extensive HR training practices. Paying for an HR consultant is the furthest thing from their minds. You don't know what you don't know. The best thing you can do for a BOB is to drop the owner a note if there are problems, build a regular customer relationship with them, and speak life to the business. As a customer, make sure your attitude is right. Don't ask for a discount if one is not offered and don't compare them to said white business. Don't complain but uplift. Regardless of if it is business, events, etc. if it is put on by black people, other black folks will put it down and complain because many of us hate ourselves and each other. You didn't do this but many do.

I’m sorry but at this point, everything you need to start your business can be found online. This is a piss poor excuse if you ask me. Customer service cost nothing absolutely nothing. The truth is, they don’t really care. If they cared about their business, they would have taken the time to give a damn but they don’t. The biggest complaint about these businesses is their level of service, so as a business owner it’s your job to counteract that.
@MeekMusings
@MeekMusings 4 года назад
I hear what a couple of you have said about customer service being about greeting people. Customer service goes well past the point of just saying hello when people walk in the room. Yes a greeting is the minimum and can possibly be quickly fixed. Most black people just want to be acknowledged. But good customer service goes well beyond that into problem-solving, empathy, making sure the customer’s needs are met, being punctual, having thorough product knowledge, etc. These things are learned and enforced. Many black customers need to change their mindsets about BOBs at the door. Be proactive. If you like a businesses’ product but you don’t like the service then be proactive in informing the ownership of the problems you experienced. Don’t just leave and complain about them. It doesn’t fix it for you or the next person. Address it! The next time you go in for a product and you get the same bad service then keep a smile on your face and ask to speak to the manager/owner. Pull them to the side, give them praise about the things that you like and then let them know where your pain points are. In other words pull the manager to the side and let them know that they “got the best peach cobbler this side of the Mississippi but your staff isn’t approachable, warm or friendly. They don’t acknowledge you when you come in the door with a hello. I want to continue to frequent your business but I just wanted to let you know that that’s a problem and I would appreciate if you changed it.” A good manager will listen to you and then work on training his staff better. If you continue to frequent the business and that has changed for the better, then you have saved a black business. If they don’t change then the manager has a character problem and you shouldn’t frequent that business anymore. They’re letting you know that they don’t want to change. But most black people won’t do that. Because we don’t think we should have to. We’ll just stop going. There’s no community building in that. We base our expectations for customer service on white businesses that have spent millions of dollars a year on training their staff in customer service. BOBs don’t get that.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I have been trying to support only black owned businesses but it's so difficult. I try to support entrepreneurs and it's always a problem with customer service, product or, simple professionalism. I often run into no pride. There's no pride in customer satisfaction. I mean, right down to handyman, my landscaper, and my local boutique. As for restaurants, oh please am down to only one. As for supermarkets, that's a full problem because there's no black owned supermarket, meat market or, seafood market. As for hairdressers and barbershops, am down to non because they're unprofessional and overpriced...i do go to the black owned produce market but i mudt say, it's completely run down and poorly managed...I even pulled back on 3 different businesses i was starting before COVID-19 because of the jealousy and unprofessionalism of the black community. The businesses were supposed to mostly benefit the black community but they're so negative that the businesses were turning into an all benefit for the white community, which in turns was a competition for the few black businesses in town...so, I shut them down, especially with the added stress of COVID-19, The current Civil Rights Movement and, the state of politics in this country.

These businesses need mentoring. Business coaches should offer some discounted or free services to help black owned businesses learn how to properly scale, customer service coaching on the chic fil a level and how to expand. This is things that if black owned businesses learn and master black people will have no problem flocking to the businesses that look like them.

I agree wholeheartedly. It's so funny, black businesses are expected to uphold and present a certain level of service, but are quick to be called low-budget or quality. Or even worse, black businesses don't get acknowledged for the huge financial and emotional tolls they incur as a result of trying to uphold business models that were designed to shut them out. It's almost as if black folks can't win if they tried.

I can agree to a degree. Standards and protocol is a good point but customers very often come in black owned businesses seeming like they want to complain, get over, and etc from the start. I've heard comments by customers saying I'm not trying to pay your bills. If you are a self employed or a business owner, yes your customers contribute to the bills. I've witnessed very derogatory and unnecessary comments from customers that wouldn't dare make those comments in a white owned business. Which kills me. Now I'm not saying B.O.Bs should get a pass for poor service and subpar business tactics but give the same chance that you would white and asian businesses. How many times as black people have we gone into the beauty supply stores, convenience stores, liquor stores, restaurants and have been mistreated, followed around as if you are stealing but yet we keep patronizing them. Then we write off our own?! It makes no sense to me. We must support our own. Thats what separates African Americans from the rest. They support their own. We have to do better. Alias must support too. Consistently, not just the sympathy support for right now because its popular at the moment.
