It is an absolute gem of a film. And I'm gonna be rewatching it a LOT. I'll even pre order the digital release for RU-vid. (Yes, it's out for pre order right now actually)
13:41 there is an easy explanation towards why these kids cared. The power of the internet is pretty strong and they most likely found or watched SA2 cutscenes on the internet. It's basically the reason why I got invested into the adventure games because every RU-vidr was talking about them in 2017 again. Me who actually was only with boost and classic familiar bought them and now I am a huge fan of those games.
i love how much of a love letter to the games this movie is, from larger plot points to audio easter eggs to blink-and-you'll-miss-it references to even more obscure games. i noticed a lot of details when i watched it, but every review i've seen has mentioned stuff i didn't catch, so i'm looking forward to rewatching it and seeing what i can find! it has its flaws, but like you said, the good vastly outweighs the bad, and i'm really excited for movie 3 and how ambitious it's going to be. EASILY the most fun i've had at a movie theater in years.
It's a 10/10 movie for me. I loved sonic and tails' friendship growing and knuckles is probably my new favourite character only because of the baseball scene 😂.
The Sonic Movie 2 is one of the best experiences i've ever had in my life as a sonic fan. It was so epic and groundbreaking, a definite 9/10 for sure, it's very good.
Honestly, I didn’t mind the wedding scene, it introduced a lot of things and allowed for a lot of loose ends to be finished off. We also can’t forget that it was the scene that introduced gun, and in turn allowed for Shadow to show up in the end credits. So while it could have been condensed a little, I feel like it was important to the overall plot of this movie, and will have an even larger impact on the plot of the next one.
I LOVED the characterization of all our faves, especially knuckles. Whilst I found the reasoning for how tails found sonic, odd. I can easily look pass it as there wasnt too many other ways to explain how tails came in to warn sonic. And maybe, a few other scenes I believe was just to extend the runtime. Knuckles was written SO well, writers seem to have a problem separating naiveity from stupidity. He's a genuine warrior, strong and determined with a very straightforward view of loyalty and socially inept. He's not a genius, but not the usual 'hot headed idiot' either which I love. They dont downplay his badassery at all. He's not stupid, he's just socially unaware and inexperienced. Which is completely understandable as Knuckles hasnt had family and friends to raise, and be taught this. Sonic is being taught maturity and strength by knuckles, intelligence and that its okay to need help by tails. Tails is learning confidence, self worth and how to be a hero in his own way by sonic and knuckles (hopefully in the future). Whilst knuckles is being guided into family and friends, by sonic and tails. Which is absolutely sweet, they've all come together and form their own family. It's adorable to see, and I'm so looking forward to how each character gets development from eachother. Robotnik having such an appearance change and slowly becoming more and more into the recognisable character we all love, eggman? I LOVED seeing that progression from the first movie. As well as his assistant's comedic and one-sided crush there.
Yeah, the tails finding sonic was so poorly done, but easy to just look over. Just wish they spent 5 more minutes in the writing room to actually come up with a slightly better reason
Sonic and Tails' relationship here is literally the biggest praise I give this movie. I mean giving us cute moments was literally something the games don't usually do and I am so impressed that the bro to bro relationship between the two is just acknowledged!
I went to see the movie alone, because I don’t know anyone else who really likes Sonic or played his games and to hear the loud cheers and screams of fans of different ages when Shadow appeared, made me feel less alone as a fan. This movie made me feel good to be a Sonic fan 💙
Can’t believe how many people left the cinema before the Shadow scene, it’s definitely a miracle and I’ve been to watch it 4 times now, I’m tempted to go again!
Seen it twice, and it was AMAZING. It was so worth the wait. That Super Sonic scene at the end tho🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. Plus all the Adventure and Genesis references are a treat
I saw both Sonic movies back-to-back, and I can honestly say that these movies are some of the most fun and enjoyable films I've seen in recent memory. Can't wait for the 3rd movie.
I've been talking to kids and parents who have seen the movie (I work at a target Starbucks next to a theater, so excited kids asking for blue cake pops and talking about sonic come through a lot) and it seems like kids have been watching Sonic X on Netflix a lot. I think Netflix kids probably boosted all the sonic programs close to the movie release. I'm sure they've watched boom as well, but there was a kid straight up talking about Vector and Charmy. So I think that's where Shadow's popularity with young new fans came from. It's so heartwarming to see the newest generation of kids experience the kind of sonic we had when we were kids. And possibly even better in the future, I hope.
i really love what you said about the care the writers took about with the story, they didn’t just make some bullshit typical minion-esque movie. they made a movie for EVERYONE!!! it’s as rare as the chaos emeralds to find a kids movie worth a shit
It's good to know that you aren't the only 13 years old kid who tells to his mother at the end of the movie the differences of the movie lore with the Sonic Adventure lore, explaining some references like that the Master Emerald temple reminds me to the the dark gaia temples and also reminds me to Laberinth Zone, or that I knew that Shadow would appear because on GUN'S helicopter appeared the Sonic Adventure 2 initials and the great character development that this movie had. (Great video)
It's nice hearing you talk about younger generations being hyped about sonic. I went to see the movie with my 10yo brother after introducing him to sonic boom and subsequent sonic lore videos, and while he was SUPER hyped about the Shadow reveal, he spent the entire care ride home explaining that the explanation behind GUN in the movie was inconsistent with their relation to Shadow in the games... after getting into sonic for two months he knew more about it than I did haha
A decade or more of films based on video games has lowered the bar to such an extent that "Doesn't suck" is considered a success. Sonic 1 and 2 have vastly exceeded expectations.
The first movie didn't bring me so much Sonic vibes, but I liked it for what it was and accepted that it was different. But the second one... I don't even have the words. I felt back in the Sonic universe, with the characters I love and all the easter eggs and game references. Yes, it was clearly a miracle. 13:12 in my theater too, even though we weren't a lot, Shadow got me hyped (I've never played SA2 but I'm a huge Sonic X fan, heh) and behind me I heard a little kid so happy, explaining who was Shadow to his dad with such excitement. It was so cute.
Tbh video game movies have been feeling non true to being accurate but sonic movies 1 and 2 I loved them so much and I can’t wait for 3 they really blew it out the park with it.
saw it today it was a great movie i enjoyed the first movie but one minor problem i had with it was the lack of fan service now i'm not saying i wanted the entire movie to be just shoving fanservice in my face no that would have been a mess but i do wish we could've gotten more soundtracks from the games put into it. the sequel fixes this problem and give us all the fanservice sonic fans could ask for tails , knuckles, chaos emeralds, death egg robot, super sonic, GUN, sonic doing his adventure 1 pose , and shadow the fricken hedgehog this movie definitely feels like it was made for the fans first. while not perfect it was a really enjoyable looking forward to the 3rd film with shadow being in it i have a good feeling the 3rd film would have a sonic adventure 2 like plot.
as a sonic fan since the genesis and sonic 2 game i was shocked and could not believe how good it was maybe it have 1 part the wedding parts. but it was adrenaline pumping the death egg robot fight , seeing sonic and tails flying the tornado sonics plane into battle, the snow boarding segment from sonic 3 ice cap the sonic adventure reference right at the start on the top of the building was amazing the mystic ruins segment was so good still in wow of how good the movie was and the very ending was a shock I loved the ending it. this was like watching sonic the hedgehog games coming to life and I'm hoping to see more of sonic adv 2 story in the next one sorry guess I'm s bigger sonic fan then I can realize lol
I give it an honest 9.5 out of 10 because simply put... those two scenes that disrupt the pace. I mean they were fun and all, it slows the plot a bit too much sometimes. But... it still is small change compared to a decent Knuckles for what feels to be a first time in forever, a return of a golden beacon of hope, and the finishing reveal of a tragic hero.
May not be on Switch, but Sonic Adventure 2 is on steam, xbox and playstation. So, it's perfectly possible that kids today are still able to access and play them, even without older consoles around the home.
what i want is sonic characters made so much justice that can scare me that they could take the place of sonic as main character only to sonic make a comeback eve awesomer that what i want. actual characters, this is the perfect opportunity to fix them all and to give people a reason to get everything and anything about every character.... they have a great opportunity here just waiting to be seized
Indeed it is and I really did enjoy this sequel as a fan. As for the criticism, I think G.U.N should've just had their first appearance in the post credits we just saw. I also like the message despite being told before. It's leagues better than The Last Jedi which did a terrible job of explaining the leadership and responsibility stuff. Overall, this film is good.
als why people say that it's been such a long time since there was a good sonic story , while we have sonic archie comic since ian flynn joined archie in 2006 and kept constantly improving upon storytelling in these comics up to 2016 with final arc being probably sonic unleashed adaptation , seriously , is not there some really know about that and how awsome ian flynn run in these comics and his work on it
The message and themes of the film didn't strike me as cheesy, or as good but that just for being a children's film. They struck me as good. Period. Cultivating and encouraging virtue is important. Our society is so busy exploring all sorts of indulgences that our modern relatively-easy lifestyle allows. In its proper place, and to a proper extent, such things aren't bad. But promoting virtuous character shouldn't be minimized. It has practical value for all of us.
After watching this, I haven't been this excited for another movie coming out since avengers Endgame came out. That post credit scene was legendary. My only gripe about the movie was all the wedding bullshit, running around the resort. They started to lose me there lol
My sonic story pitch is that a mysterious force is pulling the entirety of Angel Island towards a giant volcano in Lava Reef Zone. I would love to see the main characters get split up and put in unlikely but interesting duos. Sonic and Espio, Cream and Charmy, or Big and Omega. I don't know much about Espio but I could see him trying to 1-up Sonic with his ninja ability. Or Omega's hate for Eggman contrasting Big's laid back attitude until Froggy get's captured and powering an Omega(or Gamma if that's who I'm thinking of) robot.
You just said that you were surprised the kids knew about Shadow when they should be too young to know of him? Well, I remember seeing on Twitter about that one kid who assumed that Shadow is Sonic.exe!
I'm not a Sonic fan but I still enjoyed the movie and it made sense to me. 8/10. Also they kept the master emerald so that means Super Donut Lord is a possibility for Sonic 3
Jeff Fowler understands what movie studios don't: the people are the actual critics, those who will carry a movie forward or not; as opposed to some keyboard warrior who thinks his opinion is everything (i.e. Rotten Tomatoes as a whole).
I loved a lot of the movie but I stand by the idea that they could have literally cut like 30 to 40 minutes out and the movie would've been significantly better. I'm talking specifically about the filler shit with the siberian dance battle and the stupid stupid part with Rachel's wedding where the movie just stopped being a sonic movie for a solid 15 minutes to give a bunch of characters the spotlight that didn't need it.
You know how the new Batman movie is being praised for feeling like a Batman movie? Well, the same could be said for Sonic. While the first is a decent overall Sonic movie, it's like Sonic 1 in that the intro is well established, but the rest of the story feels rather bland by comparison save for maybe one or two scenes. Sonic 2 is more like, well, Sonic 2. It's bigger, establishes Super Sonic (lol), brings in Tails (also lol), and establishes what a Sonic adventure (VERY lol) should look like tonally.
The baseball scene at the end really felt like such a beautiful and subtle nod to end the movie on. I almost cried for sure. So much of this was just cinematic gold for me. This was the movie we needed. 🙏
Sonic 2 reminded me why I am a Sonic fan. It's because of quality gems like Sonic 2 but its been so damn long since something like it has come out. It felt like I had forgotten what Sonic was about
Watched it and although nothing ground breaking its still a very good movie. 7/10 and very hopeful that the games can keep the hype going and get us some new fans and content for the old fans
@@reservoir4798 Yh for sure I’m wondering I’m wondering though if they will change shadows backstory sorta but we will defo need sonic music for sure in the third movie
Watching this movie as a Sonic fan is a perfect 10/10 for me. It was so emotional for me. Everything I wanted in this movie was there. For me, I can’t find flaws. Amazing watch and I HIGHLY recommend sonic fans to watch this.
SPOILERS AHEAD! IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE DO NOT CLICK "READ MORE" The movie was pretty mid up untill the part where sonic and tails find the compass. After they found the compass everything picked up. Almost everything besides the wedding was great. There were so many references to the games that even the little kids in my theater were screaming about. The real of shadow got everyone even the parents in my theater freaking the f out. The 3rd movie and the knuckles series is already confirmed but I honestly would like a 4th movie if they do not wrap everything up in the 3rd.
I went to see this movie with my cousin (we're both huge fans of anything sonic) and we absolutely loved it. It was probably the most fun experience I've ever had in a movie theater. There were so many times the two of us just looked at each other because we understood the references. But my favorite moment was during the post credits scene when they said that the file dated back to 50 years ago, I swear that my brain just exploded. Then when Shadow showed up on screen, the theater EXPLODED like, not kidding over half of the theater was going nuts. Sure the movie did have its strange moments, but the good totally outweighs the bad. I know that as a regular movie this might not be perfect, but as a SONIC movie, this is what so many fans have been wanting. I totally recommend it to any Sonic fan.
Finally! Someone whom loved the dance scene and found it charming! EEP! :) By the way Matthasnocuts and I both had the same kind of experience with the movie in general and Shadow appearing at the end credits. There was a kid in front of my Mom and I (I saw the movie with my Mom) jumping up and down letting out excitedly, "It's Shadow! It's Shadow! It's Shadow!" He was so cute! :) Then there was another boy whom kept on endlessly repeating, "There's going to be a Sonic the Hedgehog 3? There's going to be a Sonic the Hedgehog 3?!" My heart was flying to the heavens above! EEP! :)
One of my favorite parts was when sonic was going to run into the master emerald and it looked like the beginning of a level, the camera was moving around him while he was stretching, i love it so much
I am a 10-year-old and I've played every sonic game besides 06 and secret rings and know almost all the lore such as Maria dying in sa2 and Shadow seeking revenge. I was also one of the kids screaming SHADOW in my theatre and almost started crying with joy when I got home. and in case your wondering I played SA1 SA2 Unleashed and gens on my ps3 though I eventually bought all of those (besides unleashed obviously) on steam to mod'em. And I bought Lost World on my Wii u Forces on my Switch Mania on my Switch but I lost it so I bought it again on Ps4 I played the classics on *deep breath* ps3 ps2 Wii phone PC Xbox 360 and my switch but I'm gonna but it again when origins comes out. I played heroes on my Wii but haven't finished it and I played black night on my Wii obviously. I also really loved the Sonic Movie 2 It's one of my favourites if not my favourite movie of all time the first one wasn't really up there since it didn't feel like a sonic movie it felt more like a regular movie with sonic in it wile, on the other hand, this feels like an actual sonic movie ask me any sonic question and I'm 99.9% sure ill answer correctly
@@corbinwoodall9206 Well that depends if people want to see Sally and the other Archie characters in live-action but honestly I don't think that they would fit in the movie universe like I can't imagine movie sonic and satam sally being on one screen. though it would be nice if they got a cameo since she's never been in the movies and she hasn't been in a game since sonic spinball
@@Fahaddex perhaps, but given the potential success and earnable billions for this new cinematic universe, the Archie series can extend the grand story out by several years. Plus, kids these days don't really know about the true Freedom Fighters, and how compelling they are.
@@corbinwoodall9206 at first i thought "nah archie characters wouldnt be a good idea" but i think you have a good point about how it could stretch this movie series into a whole extended franchise/universe. imagine some avengers level threat in a later sonic movie and all thos characters band together? that would be unreal
A setup wedding so G.U.N. could get close to the Wachowski's to catch Sonic and you think that was a bad way to introduce them? That was one of the smartest ways to introduce them because not only did it introduce them, it explained and showed exactly what their purpose was
Sees Tails - good! Sees bald and lore-accurate Eggman - great! Sees best portrayal of Knuckles in years - awesome! Sees Super Sonic - outstanding! Sees Shadow in post-credits - AMAZING!
Better than the first movie. But perfect? No. I feel like with this they took steps forward but while doing it they had some missteps. Like this film is basically cut into two "parts". The first part is Tails and the second is about Knuckles. I just dont really like how they handled humans, like that marriage thing in the middle of the movie, ik that theyre trying to relate with the parents and shit, but it just goes on for a long time and is stupid. In the next movie they should ignore the humans a bit I think. But still there was a lot of sonic references and most missteps are nitpicks. There are sooo many awesome scenes, the final scene is all I ever wanted. And the post credit scene..... I was still shivering when I got home from the cinema. I would give this film an 8/10.
Fans will love the film but as a film it was a bit disappointing. Still, let them make their own opinion and this movie is good on its own right. But my concern is how well will they balance Sonic with the general audience going forward, because there were alot of blind spots. Also it’s just sad, that in order for Sonic to be enjoyable…Sega shouldn’t touch anything. Believe me, I agree this film was a miracle, but I’m tired of Sonic being relevant because of miracles. It’s time we see Sonic EARN his respect back the old fashioned way, not because we’re expecting someone else to fix the problems for us. Again, the movie was good, but still…step it up Sega.
I mean, it's a movie based on animal game characters meant for kids. What do you expect from it in terms of pure cinem and film? Take a look at spider man no way home. Everyone loved it because of the multiverse thing, but remove spider man from the title and look at the plot and you realize it's so bad, forced, confusing, etc. In the end, the purpose of the move isn't to break film making grounds, it's to bring sonic to life which it did in a very enjoyable way. It seemed like a big budget movie with plenty of great cgi, action sequences, locations, popular music, etc. Obviously improvements can be made, but that can be said for anything. Furthermore, everyone will have a different opinion, so some things with always remain decisive amonst audience, there's no pleasing everyone. So far I've noticed 99 percent of kids, and sonic fans have loved the movie. The only people not enjoying it much are non sonic fan adults, and I can understand why. But it's not a movie meant for them
I cannot put into proper words how much I love Sonic Movie 2. I loved everything about it. Even the wedding subplot. The humans made this film feel more lively and they were actually fairly useful. From Team Sonic fighting Eggman to Super Sonic to Shadow in the post credits. I was hyped asf
even though the message is cheesy I feel like sonic has always been a little cheesy in it's message and its OST's lol and I love that about sonic. a perfect balance of cheesy messages and epic badassory. I just love this movie so much
I honestly don’t understand the hate for the wedding scene, it was literally not even 1/4th of the movie and was actually funny when she had the kart. Showing gun there was unnecessary but it wasn’t PAINFULLY unwatchable like ever fan keeps exaggerating. I’m not saying you have to like it but every Sonic fan I’ve watched keeps saying it was terrible, it sucked, it dragged but when I watched it it wasn’t even that bad, it went by fast imo. Ijs, before constantly saying that part sucked, just….Don’t lol
I saw the Sonic movie with my brother and although I’m a sonic fan my brother isn’t really a fan, but when it came down to the wedding scene we both thought it was hilarious mainly because of Rachel lmao 🤣 So no hate for the wedding scene here
I never thought a live action sonic movie would be widely accepted and even liked. When you hear “live action” it usually means a heartless project made just to get some extra money but these sonic movies have been beyond what I expected. An absolute thrill ride and just a great time to watch.
Me my younger cousin and my sister just saw it today and I told my cousin lets wait till the credits end in the first half. And we did and we saw Shadow rising up and waking from his sleep. My cousin had a huge smile on his face and he was like no way! ( I saw it by leaks sadly before he did but I didnt say anything.)
Things that would make the Sonic movies WAY better: If they didn't even take place on Earth, UNLESS such a thing would need to happen as part of a story involving an actual Sonic game(s) and the only human character would be Robotnik.....which makes me think that is why the Sonic movies even involve Earth to begin with. The characters that are actually from the games can handle their own in the movies just fine without the need to add on new characters. If there were TONS AND TONS of sonic the hedgehog music from all of the games sprinkled through out both movies in various forms, in addition to the pre existing music, which I DO love (ESPECIALLY FREAKIN PANTERA!!!!! WOOO!!!!.....ahem....anyway) Robotnik's assistant, Stone, should NOT be in EITHER of the movies! What the living hell does this guy actually bring to either of the movies? NOTHING! Robotnik doesn't need an assistant! THAT'S WHAT HIS DAMN ROBOTS ARE FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF, MOVIE!!??? Jim Carrey should have worn a fat suit for both of the movies, because while pretty much every detail about Dr. Ivan Robotnik was captured by Jim in both movies, a crucial detail was left out of BOTH movies, a detail so important that Robotnik's nickname LITERALLY REFERS TO IT: DR. EGGMAN!! Jim Carrey as Robotnik doesn't resemble an egg! He's SKINNY! Dr. Ivan Robotnik is PLUMP!!!
13:41 As a (mostly) kid, I can say that I've grew up with sonic Adventure, sonic Adventure 2, ect I've played it on Xbox a lot, I still play it today too Shadow has always been my favorite character, and then sonic, so seeing shadow made me really happy (but I didn't scream out his name like the the other kids) Like, even my 7 year old sister got excited when she saw shadow
These movies single handedly made me get back into Sonic. Used to love Sonic growing up but lost interest after the lack of quality games. I finally remember why I even liked Sonic to begin with lol
(Spoilers!!! Pls dun read this if you haven't seen the movie) I have a feeling the third Sonic Movie is going to be based off both Sonic Adventure as well as Sonic Adventure 2 so Rouge appearing is a possible chance and we also might get Maria too and also my fave moments in the movie was Super Sonic which was a surprise from Sega and Paramount Studios and the way Tails made a lil laser Gun to shoot at the badniks is pretty Clever, how Team Sonic was Formed, Baby Knuckles( he's just a sweet and innocent looking as Baby Sonic). What I'd like to see in Sonic Movie 3 Rouge and Maria if it's possible for her to show up Shadow saying his iconic phrases such as ' Damn' if not ' I'm the ultimate life-form Shadow the hedgehog ' , 'behold the ultimate power Shadow Riding his motorcycle , Shadow Holding a Gun Shadow and Sonic calling each other a Faker I'd also like to see Super Shadow ,if it's possible imagine Super Shadow vs Super Sonic or if Shadow ever removes his Inhibitor Rings to become Chaos Shadow If Dark Sonic is possible too
My sister told me the movie was going to bomb. I went to the theater and it was full, with kids and grown-ups, heck I sat next to a man who was older than me and we fist bumped at the great parts. A 70 million dollar weekend! Haters gonna hate.
Yeah, your sister could not be any more wrong about Sonic 2. It's already past $150 million in the box office so far and well on its way to $200 million.
Movie was amazing. Im 40 years old and grew up playing Sonic. However, now Im even a bigger fan than ever. Why? Because of my kids! They are 7 and 4 and LOVE all things SONIC. How did that happen? They found Sonic games on their tablets. Yes, they found old Sonic games and played them over and over again. Im talking Sonic 1,2,3, Sonic Dash, Sonic Forces, Sonic Olympics and more. That is how they learned all the characters and even taught me some of those characters that I had no idea even existed. So to me it is no suprise these kids know who Shadow is. Why? Because these kids are literally going back and playing ALL of the Sonic games. Now that has two movies that are wildly successful, the next generation has become bigger fans than us. I mean these kids literally run around the house, at school and even at sporting events like Sonic with their arms out stiff like him. They talk about collecting rings and fighting Dr Robotnik. Im telling you, the next generation are bigger fans than us and it aint even close. Sonic is their hero for real and Im loving every single second of it because it is taking me back to my childhood watching their interest in Sonic grow.
I think this film has tons of issues but its heights were so high, I'm perfectly fine with everything that drags. Also Knuckles is so good, and his relationship with Sonic was so well developed, definitly the best version of him. I loved that third act, it felt exactly like what I wanted from a sonic movie. I'd give this film a 6/10 where the first was a 2/10, a good film bogged down by the bad tropes in kid's films.
