I was going to say, in many countries this is the first time women can actually choose not to have children. Its been studied and proven the more educated women are, the less kids they want. I do think there are also societal and economic problems keeping women who do want children from having them though.

Why have kids? Well, how about experiencing self-sacrificing, unpossessive charity, and forging an eternal bond within a loving family? At least my dad is an amazing guy and does the shopping and cooking, while my mom do the house cleaning and laundry. It baffles me how it's more normal in households for the women to do all the house work as well as shopping and cooking, while the man get's to relax. The county/state does not care to pay a lot for their public kindergarten teachers who literally ruin their hearing in their job, but a big private company with expensive products are more likely to pay their employees a fair wage for some office time. I would also feel bad seeing those kids studying to the wee hours of the night. At some point I would go back to my home country for my sanity and peace of mind, if possible. I homeschool my kids in Africa and they do serious study about 3 hours a day and get to play or have other fun activities for the rest of the day. I'm grateful and wouldn't have it any other way.

It makes all the difference. I'm working a 40 hour job, but when I get home I know that my wife's been working with our young kids the entire day. I've tried really hard to make sure there aren't times when my wife is cleaning or taking care of the kids by herself when I'm home. Does she do more housework than I do? Absolutely. But I try really hard to keep the overall balance of work fairly even, or give her a break when she's just done. I feel so bad for those families where they expect the mom to do all the work, it just doesn't seem sustainable.

It is a problem with the social system. Many women want to have a family one day, but they also want to have a career. The problem is that people (men and women) are expected to work so much that they don't see any possibility to start a family because taking time off during pregnancy and when raising a kid will set them back years in the pursuit of climbing the corporate ladder, if it doesn't get them fired first. The fact most men expect the wife to be the only one raising the kids and taking care of the home surely doesn't help at all either. With the current culture they are forced to chose between children and a career, there is simply not enough time for both. I wouldn't say it is inherently a wise choice, they are just forced to pick the option they think will make them least unhappy in the end, which is kind of sad.

I’m proud of you for knowing yourself. I too, was screamed at to clean and cook. I was even left with a bunch of little kids so the adults could run. I was made to be fearful because if something happened to those kids I’d get hurt and have handfuls of hair ripped out. The scared me because they knew they shouldn’t be leaving babies with an 8 year old. Anyway, I grew up knowing I didn’t want kids but then I met my husband. My whole being was screaming to have his babies and I did. And it works for us but I’m mentally messed up trying to prove to myself that I’m a better. I already know I’m better but I stretch myself so dang thin just to keep my children from feeling a drop of what I felt as a child. Don’t have babies just to prove to yourself you’re better. You’re already better by validating yourself.

My mom didn't threaten me, although she did say some very hurtful things at times. I could tell from a young age that she probably would have been happier going to college and getting a degree, even if she wouldn't admit it. My grandpa didn't help her pay for it, but he helped me and my cousins. I was able to graduate without debt and my mom would sometimes say I wasn't grateful enough. What does that even mean? I used my degree to go teach English in Asia because I wanted to live abroad, it's not like I didn't use it. Anyway, the main message here is to make yourself happy and do what you want to do. Only have kids if you will truly be happy with that choice. If you had asked me 10 years ago, I would have said I wanted kids. But that was because I wanted to prove to myself that I had value. Now I don't want kids even though I love them. I spent 8+ years teaching kids, that was enough. If I change my mind in the future, I can probably do some kind of volunteer work, hosting or tutoring.

Child rearing in mostly boring, stressful and neverending. If they get sick is even worse. You spend your time at home, cleaning, cooking, takeing care of someone who can't do anyting on their own. When school starts, it is all over again for you. Studying, homework, boring classes..... You still love your child, but it is labour everything around them😀

I've slaved away at warehouses, gotten yelled at by entitled customers, collapsed from exhaustion as a nurse, and suffered through a harassing micromanager in an office up in a high rise. My whole purpose elsewhere was to line the pockets of a megalomanic. No job has been able to fulfill me like raising my children has.

I'm a single mother because the father left me for another woman. Yes men leave and then you struggle alone. Also my child was diagnosed with autism at age 1 years old. A child's health is not guaranteed you can be surprised with a disabled child. I love my child but I would be lying if I said it was easy. It's been a real struggle because children who are special needs don't sleep and have feeding issues and behavior issues and doing it alone really takes a toll on you.

To me, it seems that Korean government knew what the problems are for the low birth rates, but their solutions are rather half-ass. They need to come up with some radical solutions if the old methods do not work. I believed in being patriotic to my birth country, but if the government of the day is not listening to their plight, and nothing has changed, then I'll leave. Mental wellbeing is more important than any money.

I would also like to add a No. 5- with no financial independence for women, that means that they will have no retirement savings of their own. There is a high chance that once their husbands pass away, they will be dependent on their children for support. Hence the vicious cycle continues back to square 1.

My father was a police officer and he was the worst husband and father you could think of. When my mom finally divorced him he never looked back at his children. He's the reason I knew deep down being a wife and mother wasn't for me.

And if you believe it’s a problem of too many people competing for the same amount of jobs, wouldn’t it be a good thing if less people have kids? The women who subscribed to the same ideology we see today will find themselves dealing with the same problems the women of the Ancient past encountered when they to had subscribed to the same ideology. Women think working and serving a corporation is with more than working and serving they family. They think getting paid in money for vanity is better than getting paid in love for purpose is better. Unfortunately they will give themselves in a bad spot after a while. There's a reason why women in their 40s who have no children are often signing up for euthanasia.
