Bella Rosa in Michigan. I bought seed from Hoss. My Bella Rosa grew well but were shorter, barely 3-1/2ft. And, they were loaded, packed with good size tomatoes the whole length of them. Michigan can be cooler and wetter, always mixed up seasons. Bella was a fantastic tasting tomato, I'm growing six more of Bella this summer, the seedlings are about 4" tall now, 3-4 more weeks and they will be outside.
Hey Hoss, Russ here from around Macon. With 12 tomato plants, instead of hilling I will try wrapping the stems with tubes made of cardboard and twine. In the tubes goes compost with some slow release organic fertilizer laced with trace minerals. 'being 76 with a stiff back, I plant in elevated planters. I will water in the tubes lightly to start rooting but try to avoid too much to prevent disease. Next year I will try your determinate type tomatoes since we do get sun scald here also. To counter sun scald now, I think I will let them grow to about 5 or 6 feet, then top trim them to encourage side growth but first put cardboard and pine needle mulch down to keep branches from ground contact. Then prune the end of the branches after growing a couple feet out. Next year, it will be the varieties you mention. I am planting black indeterminate types and miniaturized varieties that apparently have larger leaves that might do well to shade the fruit. By the way, I accidently built a place that encourages lizards to live that are crawling on all the plants as they patrol for insects! So far, not one plant has a chewed leaf! Let them grow, live and prosper, I say, LOL!
This definitely works for me! I'm growing Bella Rosa, Brickyard (Yes! I still had a few of these seeds!), and trying Shelby for the first time. I'm hoping to put up enough to last until next year.
I hear you on the hot sun in Summer here in Georgia. I have a bunch of indeterminate to find out which ones will do okay. I am North of you in Alpharetta (7B) but last year we got a blazing beat down in August and lots of rain too. I have planted 6 Bella Rosa and 6 Red Snapper. I bet they do great. Your seeds are in big white pellets that germinated fast and have been growing well. Also got some Black Krim. If you can grow them way down there I can too. Thanks for all your great info. I’m definitely going to try these this year along with my indeterminates I normally buy! Here in NC were right on the edge of getting away with a full summer of indeterminate tomato’s since I planted them on the side of our house that gets shade after 2pm. I think that’s the real thing that saves them from that insane afternoon heat we get in July and august. Last year we had such a warm fall I was harvesting tomato’s well into October before the cold finally took em out!
Red Snapper and Hossinator doing well for me so far. I'm a little behind you. I do grow a lot of OP indeterminates because I love them, but last year really convinced me to step up my determinate hybrid game!
I live in the panhandle of FL and I am setting up my first garden this year, so far it is about 1/8th of an acre, but i plan on expanding it to 3/4's of an acre I have planted some tomatoes in the main garden behind my house but also I have a semi shaded area of the house (on the NW side) that I am going to plant around my patio. I will have enough space for 2 rows about 40ft... a nice sized side garden, and I am going to try planting some vegetables there as well. I am trying all different kinds in both gardens to see what grows best where and next year I will know better what to put where.. but based on what you've said and other videos i have watched i think the patio garden will be a good spot for peppers & tomatoes to extend my growing season throughout the whole 8-9months or so of warm weather we have here. I encourage everyone reading this to not feel that they must plant flowers next to their house (i do have flowers in the front yard and veggies around the sides & back) and to be open to planting veggies in their flower garden as well as being open to potted veggies that can be moved to where they like to be. These are just a couple ways I am planning to be able to get the variety & production I am looking for out of my gardening effort. Also, planting merigolds, & other flowers around your main garden's edge is another great idea for multiple reasons. Nice video either way, & I like that it seems more pertainent to my zone
Man I love this channel. I live in Cullman County, Alabama so a lot of the climate is practically the same. I bought my first house last year and I have the room to do my first garden. I was only going to do a raised bed or two, but now I’ve bought a rear tine tiller and 1,200 square feet of Dewitt Sunbelt. I’m probably in over my head but I’m excited about it. I appreciate all the knowledge I gain from this channel.
I'm gonna try some shade cloth over my tomato plants this summer down here in Ocala, Fl. Hopefully it will extend my season a little bit. Looking forward to see how the Hossinator does this year.

I’m in Eastern ARKANSAS, right at the Tennessee/ Mississippi tri-state area… It gets smokin hot with unbearable humidity here as well… I have a grow bed that’s shaded by my carport until around 10am and trees give around from 4pm until dark! My Indeterminates thrive in that spot from April until November! In my open garden areas, they get smoked by Aug
I grow indeterminate heirloom varieties here in the central valley of California. They produce fruit all the way till October! I do have to cover them with burlap on very hot days. This year for the first time, I'm using raised beds. I have a very bad back at 64 and can't bend over to tend to my garden anymore.

I am grilling red snapper for the first time zone 10B. Was amazed at how fast the plants grew.The plants vigor is very good, they are about 4 feet tall with quite a few flowers I do not have a lot of fruit just a couple here and there. It has been in the 80s so I don’t know if that is deterring them. But they are nice looking plants so far.
I have red snapper and roadster this year. So far they're the prettiest and healthiest looking tomato plants I've ever grown. I'm in north Florida zone 8b and I haven't had much luck with heirloom varieties. I'll probably get the same seeds next year and maybe try one of the Roma varieties also
I'm from pumpkintown SC and have always farmed horses not food. This is my second year with a garden amd first year with corn and watermelon 🍉 I need all the help I can get and then some and I don't need any help from the deer!! Hopefully I'm planting enough for the critters and us

Here in the north (Southern Ontario) determinate tomatoes have done well for me too. I can grow indeterminates too, but determinates are more productive and they don't produce fruit all at once, they just shift to focusing all their energy on fruit in July (first harvest in early August), and the production period is not shorter than for determinates, they keep producing until the first frost (typically in October). Mountain Merit is a hybrid determinate that has done very well for me and gets 4-5 ft tall. Indeterminates can get 8-10ft tall here (and 10-15ft for cherry tomatoes).
I'm trying some determinate and dwarf this year. I usually grow indeterminate but they don't produce well here with all the heat we get. I'm growing early girl bush determinate and several dwarf varieties this year. I will try some of the ones you mentioned next year. Thanks.
Bella Rosa variety is the best for my 9b garden. The fruit are large, real red tomato flavor healty plants and ripens well when picked early. I underappreciated BRs until you guys highlighted it a few years ago.
I'm growing Red Snapper and Hossinator for the first time in North Central Florida. If anyone has grown both, I'd be interested to hear how they compared in your garden.
I grew both last year in Oklahoma 7b. Red snapper did better. Hossinator initially set more fruit. Red snapper grew bigger fruit. Red snapper took the heat better and produced longer.
@@b.p432 You have confirmed my expectations for this year. I planted twice as many Red Snapper. By the way, the Bella Rosa I grew last year did not impress, but they were planted quite late and that's tough on tomatoes in our heat...
Here in the very most southern part of Missouri using H202 has allowed me to frow indeterminate varities into november basically making a blight and funguses a non factor. It gets very hot and humid much like the deep south. here its not uncommon to reach over 100 degrees every summer with dew points in the mid 70s
I'm in central NC, zone 7b. I do OK with indeterminates and grow primarily heirlooms. I have tried a couple of hybrid varieties and they're...fine. But I grow tomatoes for the delicious taste. How would you say that these compare to that old time tomato flavor that home gardeners love?
Personally, I want less acid and more sweet. I guess it is up to individual taste but the grocery store tomatoes are too acidic to eat out of the garden with a salt shaker. I don't want to grow clones of those. I hope the OP has some better recommendations.
In North Carolina most everyone grows indeterminate tomatoes, but most everyone in states south of us grow the determinate because of the excessive heat and humidity limits tomatoes productivity.
Hey Hoss. I live in Southwest KS. We have hot super windy summers. Imagine living in a blow dryer where temps can easily reach 110 in summer. Our tomatoes can struggle to set fruit. Do you think these indeterminates are worth a try?
In our part of Virginia we cannot grow determinate types. They rot on the ground. Determinate do not work well even with a trellis system. When we lived in the semi arid west, determinate work well, not here in Va.

Which ones have thin skins and the most flavor? I don't want to waste my garden space on the same bad tomatoes I can buy at the grocery store. I rather have 10 really delicious tomatoes than 40 grocery store baseballs.
Do you sucker determinate type tomato’s? I’m a Virginian so I grow indeterminate and suckering in my opinion, is necessary to produce big tomato’s. Old man next door showed me how to do this and it’s just what I’ve always done. What is your opinion on this?
That is silly, a simple mister will convert cheap water to expensive fruit. I live in the south east and can harvest tomatoes from may to Oct. Yes you have to start them inside with a grow light or cover them when frost comes. But its a small amount of effort to get a lot more tomatoes from each foot of growing space.
quality advice. ive always grown indeterminate's because ive enjoyed the hand pollinating aspect. but its now become tedious and i do get a lot of blossom end rot if i dont control the heat theyre exposed to! I shall take this advice and try determinates
