Welcome to a brand new vlog! In this video I'm going to be doing a CITY REVIEW of Saint Petersburg (also known as St. Petersburg and Leningrad in the Soviet days) - the former capital of the Russian Empire, the second biggest city in Russia, one of Russia's most European cities and also probably my favorite place in the entire country. In this poor man's travel guide we're gonna go over some cool places in St Petersburg and I'm going to try to explain why I think it's the greatest city in Russia. Smash like and sub for more thx xoxo

Saint Petersburg is truly magnificent. From its Imperial architecture to its long canals. Absolutely among the most beautiful cities in all of Europe.
@Riyoshi000
@Riyoshi000 3 года назад
That's exactly why I didn't enjoy it as much though. It's too European, most buildings look exactly the same as somewhere in Europe or colonized by them. I enjoyed visiting smaller cities near Moscow and St. Pete more then those themselves. Novgorod's Kremlin is fantastically beautiful and there's an awesome monastery in an island in a lake in the nearby region (forgot the name of the place, if someone knows please share). I highly recommend you visit this city and region if you're going to St. Pete. Located between it and Moscow you can add it as a stop for a day or two in your itinerary.

@@Riyoshi000 Well, I do not get the "too European" part, It is quite obvious considering Russia is a European country. Communism is what put a halt on historical Russian architecture, and replaced them with plain boring low-quality Communist blocks. Only architecture that I like from the Soviet era are the Seven Sisters in Moscow... quite beautiful.

@@Riyoshi000 There actually two islands, one with monastery and another with reconstructed church, but they are on different lakes. Valaam monatery is located on Valaam island in lake Ladoga, second largest lake in Europe (if counting Caspian sea as lake) and you can get there on ship from St. Petersburg. Actually in lake Ladoga there are another island with monastery - Konevets island. Kizhi island is placed on lake Onega and has famous Kizhi pogost which is a UNESCO world heritage site. You can take a ship to Kizhi from Petrozavodsk. All islands and sites are fantastic places to vist with natural and architectural beauty. By the way, Valaam and Konevets islands have active monasteries.

@@identity2257 Ofc America has culture, it just does not have a long history, since it's a relatively new country. And by saying "culture" here you mean "history". And being young isn't a bad thing, nor for humans nor for countries. It's like bashing teens because they have not been thru things you have been thru. Don't worry they will grow to your age one day, and maybe they will be better human beings than you at this age. And America due to its geographical position is designed to be a Great Country. It already has a great culture, and it will be so in the future. The whole world learning English, and it's not because of UK, Canada, or Australia, it's because the whole world watch American movies, listen to American songs, it's because America is a strong political and cultural center of the world, and it's all happening right now, not somewhere in the past. STP is the city of the emperors, Moscow is the city of the czars. It's a historical fact. Peter the great hated Moscow bc it was such a traditional czarist city. So, after he declared himself an emperor and removed the title of czar he had decided to build a new capital, an empirial one. STP is historically called "a capital of empirial Russia" . Empirial STP was build to oppose czarist Moscow. Czar and an emperor are not the same thing. It's very different economic, diplomatic and political approaches.

I've been to Paris. It IS impressive. Paris is literally just different. No more no less. St. Petersburg blows away all west coast USA cities....It gets beat by Chicago and NY and barely in Chicago's case. London is on par as well. You are in one of the greatest cities in the world. I can feel my grandmother's spirit calling it home in my heart. She never wanted to leave. Her mother did, so she had to. She always wanted to go home. And died before she could.

@@jm-je4tl I'd say it's cleaner and much more organized, but more beautiful? The roads cutting though the city center (I mean, literally you can drive up to McCormick) rob it of its potential beauty. It's just too hollow and cold (not in the weather sense, although that's also true). The fact that there are no vista terminations (ie the street grid stretches beyond the horizon in every direction) makes it feel wide open and unwelcoming... IMO of course

I have two requests though. Please PAN SLOWER! Think of your camera as a remote version of every single viewer in your audience. When you think you're panning slow enough, PAN SLOWER. Don't treat your camera like a spray paint nozzle! And also, when speaking and cutting your audio, please TALK SLOWER and leave more breath pauses. Some random shit i found on St. Petersburg history. "It’s not hard to imagine that Sweden has had to deal a lot with Russia in the past. Since Finland has been a part of Sweden longer than it’s been its own republic, Sweden’s eastern border was the long border to Russia and way, way back where St. Petersburg proudly stands today, there stood once a fortress. The man responsible was Torgils Knutsson. At the time there were only Finnic and Livonian tribes residing in the area and during a crusade to the east, he had the fortress Landskrona built. Now, this was in 1299 and only two years later it was destroyed by the Russians, however a few hundred years later, in 1611, the Swedes started to build another fortress called Nyenskans. Around it, the town of Nyen started to form. About 100 years later, the Russians managed to take over the area and founded St. Petersburg. I know it’s a bit of a stretch to say that St. Petersburg itself was founded by Swedes, but at least it makes for a good story." Is it Swedish/European is it Russian? You be the judge but seems like Russia's had a firm grip on this area since the 1700's More random history about my boy Torgils Knutsson "Now, our friend Torkel or Torgils was not a lazy man, he also founded the Russian city of Vyborg (). The city started out as a castle in 1293 and, naturally, a town grew around it. The town got city rights in 1403 and was then Sweden’s strongest defense against Russia and one of the finest fortresses in the kingdom. However, the city was lost to Russia in the Great Nordic War and later incorporated in the Grand Duchy of Finland. This, a few years after Sweden had lost its eastern half to Russia in 1809. Since then, Finland has turned into its own republic and after the Winter War the city was handed over to the Soviet Union and still remains a part of Russia today."

this may have been a good price for New York/Disneyland/etc, for eastern europe it's still a ripoff since it's possible to get lunch for 2 for that amount. Also, it's not just the money it's the principle of the thing: those types of people exist here in Ukraine as well, and they can be quite persistent. Oh and god forbid you so much as interact with them and not pay them anything, they will kick up a big fuss and begin to act like gopniks ( because that's what they are). Also you think anyone can just go there and try to earn money that way? If you were to dress up as a character and try to make money nearby they'd beat you up.
