Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers, Sleepy Hollow) joins us this week to share how he changed course from his military upbringing to pursue his dream of acting, and how his career has come full circle with the lives he’s impacted through this work. Casper shares a lot from his experience with Starship Troopers - from the marketing stunts that weakened it in the box office, to the industry legends who geek out over the project, and why there’s a resurgence in its popularity nearly three decades after its release. We also talk about what it’s like having a daughter pursue acting, his Ironside mentorship, and memorable moments on set with legends like Ernest Borgnine.

I spent half a day hanging with Casper at his very first convention, in Tampa. He was the NICEST GUY he possibly could be. He went above and beyond for his fans and even did live commentary for Starship Troopers 3 on the spot, which he wasn't even obligated to do. I was there when he was talking to the event staffers. He was like "hey, is there a microphone setup in that viewing room? Would you mind if I went in there and did commentary for my fans?"

I watched it in the theater when it came out and it was amazing--the whole audience (it was a full theater) was as animated as I have ever seen an audience. Cheering, laughing, everything. I knew it was something special the first time I saw it.

Sci-fi films, with the obvious exceptions like Star Wars, E.T. and Jurassic Park, have had a long history of not always finding their most-deservedly huge audiences right away. Retrospectively they can encourage the most thoughtful discussions as Starship Troopers can here. Thank you, Casper.

Man, his role (along with two others in that movie) was one of the reasons I joined the military. Crazy cool (and not surprising) that he spent a lot of time amongst the military early on and initially had planned on doing that. He perfectly portrayed that role, and the movie in general I think inspired a generation of kids to join (the bulk of the GWOT generation). This is awesome!

There's a price for being "ahead of its time". Sometimes it can be recognized right away or take some time for it to be recognized. Or sometimes it takes decades. Either way, the appreciation and respect by the masses doesn't happen until much later, because it needs to stand the test of time to get there.

I remember watching this around the time it came out on an afternoon with nothing to do. Felt like a decent popcorn movie but didn't think about it further. Randomly, last year I revisited and adored its satire which I completely missed the first time around. I'm not that smart is what I'm saying. Great flick.

I was about 13 in 1997 and saw it in the theaters. The SS uniforms at the end hit us over the head with it, so I got what the movie was about at the time. I loved it from the start. I also remember watching something about it on E! at the time, stuff behind the scenes when filming the knife and brain bug scene.

Starship Troopers the movie is not supposed to be taken too seriously and it was fun to watch. I enjoyed it in the 90s and I have watched it many times since. As with HG Wells War of the Worlds it no doubt departs from the book but who cares - it made at least some of us smile and it’s just got entertainment after all. I really enjoyed this podcast.

The movie has its place in my heart but I also had read the book a few months before the movie released and the book has a different tone and is so much better. They also eliminated @ a 3rd the book where they go through boot camp to learn the very cool IronMan like mech suits THAT ALL THE MARINES wear. Like scout suits, infantry suits, tanks suits, so much just left out the movie.

Casper, I came to starship troopers through the book. Hate to tell you, but Verhoven was a mutt. He was trying for sarcasm, and instead, the team interpreted the source material almost perfectly as to its spirit and intent. Michael Ironside nailed his character. Its a shame they, because they were being sarcastic, didn't include the final scene in the book, where Johnny is on a transport in space and finds out his Father not only survived the bombing, but enlisted and is now his first Sargent.

The character building, the timing of each step in the plot, the acting, and the action itself were so good that the "message" was truly a secondary thing. At 20+ I understood the poke at our culture where they hide the violence towards a cow but show all the human gore and war. The Army guy with his legs and hand missing was not subtle. Even though I was prime selective service age I still went in for the gung-ho attitude of the whole movie. I had also read the books. I cannot tell if that helped or hindered the movie in my eyes. I certainly did not try to make the movie about the book, back then.

There was a couple of reasons that Starship Troopers failed at the box office and the first is being rated R so anyone under 18 could not go see this film. Which eliminated a lot of younger viewers. The next is the critics review bombed it(called journalism when they do it and bad when fans do it) when it opened as pro militarism propaganda and made for the far right chuds. Now the same critics have "reassessed" it as a great military satire making fun of jingoism. Which all the fans knew from day one before the clueless critics.

The VFX crew back then didn't have the technology yet to do the power suits like they can today with CGI so the changes were made to accommodate the film tech of the day. Not the book but maybe a better film for it.

Let’s be honest: it was made by a director who didn’t bother to even read the book. All he knew was that he wanted to mock the book because he mistakenly thought the book (again, which he didn’t read) was fascist. He made up a straw man and boy did he beat the shit out of the straw man, but he missed absolutely everything that made the book a sci-fi classic. If you haven’t read the book, just one big example: the core of the Mobile Infantry was a suit of powered armor with tactical nuclear bombs. One Starship Trooper, by himself, could wipe out a city. A huge portion of the book was an analysis of how you could trust such power to one man, how you would train such a man, and what values a society would inherently need to do it. Absolutely NONE of that was in the movie.

I've got to admit that I was confused about what the movie was going for when I first watched it. I just remember thinking the costumes and sets looked really generic and corny; which even then I recognized was intentional, but all the actors played it straight like they were in a legitimate Sci-Fi action movie, so it was a bit of an enigma to me for a while. I was also a teenager with no access to the internet at the time, so that probably had a lot to do with my confusion.
