A while back I discussed why Star Trek Insurrection was the worst Star Trek movie. So this time I wanted to discuss what I think is the best Star Trek movie and no it's not The Wrath of Khan. Instead I chose the most recent big screen outing, Star Trek Beyond.

it's my favourite too!!.. i am not a huge fan of movies in general, and i always prefer watching series over movies.. but Beyond is my favourite in the list of ST movies, and i had the largest smile while watching the film for the first time that was enough for an entire train to go through me.. speaking of smiles; i wonder if you've ever watched the 'Other Space' that was released on (the now dead) Yahoo-Screen platform.. the 2015 'the Other Space' was a fantastic sci-fi/comedy 10 episodes series but was killed by Yahoo Studios after only one season and with a cliff hanger at season finale.. the Other Space (to me) is an instant classic, like Firefly, that was also killed for no good reason (that i can accept) but unfortunately, it is a bit hard to find it online nowadays.. please do check it out, if you are able to.. tc

YES, YES AND YES!!! I couldn’t agree more! Beyond examines the core of Star Trek & what it means better than any other Trek film! I hate that this film was drowned in the midst of an over crowded summer season. It was released on the same weekend as Comic-Con for cripes sake, the weekend in which most of your core audience will be busy! Also the PR for Beyond was terrible! Im a die hard Trekker and this is the only Trek film I didn’t see in theaters! I hate that I did that! Regarding Sabotage, I enjoy it’s use but as a means to turn the scene on its head I would have used Jayla’s favorite human song “Fight The Power”. Its just as thrilling & works without the potential eye roll of reminding audiences of the first Trek film. Thank you for this video, you summed up all of my feelings on it rather succinctly, an opinion I just recently came to after a recent rewatch. Star Trek Beyond was the best, most wonderful surprise of a Trek film. Cheers!

Optimus Prime My problem with Into Darkness Kirk is that he hasn’t changed or grown from Star Trek (2009), he’s learning the exact same lessons again. At least in Beyond we see some of the maturity of TOS Kirk. The version of Kirk from the first 2 Kelvin films felt more like a parody or at least the version that passive Trek fans imagine he’s like because of pop culture: “man whore womanizer with a big ego” which is not the essence of Kirk as played by Shatner. I still love the first 2 Kelvin films but in this respect I prefer Beyond.

For me, Star Trek Beyond combines the best of old and new. It took the heart of classic TOS and the magnetic storytelling style and visuals of a modern blockbuster and mixed them together to teach a lesson while having fun. It is honestly a blueprint for what I hope Strange New Worlds would be like. And the ENT era references and the continual attention to OSHA safety with the kelvin pods and seatbelts are just extra bonuses that make this film so much more fun for me!

It was nice how the film commemorated Leonard Nimoy's passing and adapted it for the film respectfully. They incorporated it well as an emotional motivation for Spock to question his role in the Federation almost paralleling Kirk's. Then they found they contribute the most working together within the Federation.

I'd agree it's the best of the three recent "Kelvin Timeline" films. I still enjoy VI The Undiscovered Country a lot more than I think I should, and IV The Voyage Home has both dated badly and become a solid time capsule. If it came down to First contact Voyage Home, Wrath, Undiscovered country and Beyond... They are each excellent in their own way. A Blockbuster, a comedy, a character study, a drama and a space opera. respectively.

Best of the alternate Star Trek movies? Yep, no contest. Best of all Star Trek? Special effects department excepted, not a chance. Still, it's a very enjoyable outing that didn't get a fair shake thanks to Paramount stupidly assuming that the 50th Anniversary would market this film for them, & only a tenner for the marketing budget would be fine.

In spite of how much Star Trek Into Darkness tried to be their own version of The Wrath of Khan, Beyond ended up being a better tribute to the old film. STID was filled with nods, classic characters, and blatant rips but it was a very hollow movie. Wrath of Khan had a scene showing the characters celebrating Kirk's birthday and the film was filled with themes of Kirk dealing with getting old. Beyond had Kirk's birthday as well but had him dealing with the realization that he was now older than his dad and wondering what his legacy is and whether the captain's chair is his future. Both of those films had the character confront his own mortality and whether he still had anything to offer to the service. Beyond may not have been incredibly popular but it was more Star Trek than any film we'd seen in years.

I agree with you on Beyond - it's just the climax, they ALMOST got it right and it could have been so powerful if the villain really saw his true past self and what he has become - he should have helped Kirk destroy the weapon before he dies - but they just went to the regular Hollywood ending. The movie is fantastic but still, they just fell slightly short from true Trek social commentary.

You're one of the few Trek channels I watch, and it's due in part to videos like this. I have long been fed up with gatekeepers and the "it's not real Star Trek" crowd. I love the Kelvin films (although the "odd number = better" rule holds true here too). I thought the '09 film was a brilliant way to avoid canon issues and develop a story that could slot the crew members into place quickly. It was fun watching Pine skirt the edges of flat-out Shatner impression in some scenes (there's one scene where he barks out the name "Spock" that perfectly captures Shatner's staccato delivery and clipped consonants). The film gave Kirk, in particular, a nice (if overly rapid) character arc from aimless punk to budding legend. And there was plenty of camaraderie and positivity in the film. I also loved Beyond, and agree with virtually everything you said about it. Anyone who dismisses this film as "not real Star Trek" just hasn't been paying attention. The fact that it was written by a huge Trek fan shines through in every scene

This movie really makes me wish Simon Pegg and Doug Jung been the writers of all the newer movies. Into Darkness was such a disappointing mess that I skipped this one. Only later learning of the new writers. When I rented it I wish I had went to see it in theaters. I like how each character got something to do. I like that they introduced a new an interesting character instead of acting like we trek fans can't handle anything new and drudging up some character from some previous episode or something. I do remember Pegg saying that he was told not to write anything to Trek into his Star Trek screenplay by execs.

Thing I hate most with the Kelvin timeline, is the fact that the Enterprise doesn't seem a "character" in and of itself, like all other series, when the ship had damage, we "felt" it .... When J.J. 'S Enterprise is destroyed, I was like, ah well, just some other random ship !
@random007nadir
@random007nadir 4 года назад
To be fair, the other film Enterprises had yeas of TV time and many stories where a character, of a sort, was established. The reboot enterprise, with its unique looking interiors, has no such advantage. I do feel the set art direction was somewhat uninspired, however.

@@random007nadir In the Kelvin timeline they also wreck the ship every time like it's meaningless, just a prop to explode. And new Interior has the nonsensical flashy sci-fi aesthetics. The old Enterprise was a simple but functional design and it was much more resilient and never sustained hull damage until Wrath of Khan, where only the engineering section got charred, not turning the whole ship into swiss cheese sucking out its crew. The main problem of Kelvin timeline: Dumb action movies which don't fit classic Star Trek (space adventures about the human condition)

I'm glad to see this video, I think Beyond gets shit on for no reason way too often, its a really great Trek movie and also just a good movie overall. There is only 1 major plot hole, which is how did Krall know the Enterprise was the only ship that could make through the Nebula? If anyone else had gone, he plan would fail, so it HAD to be the Enterprise...the only ship that could do it. There is no way he could have gained the information that the Enterprise could do that, NOR would he have any information that they just picked up the weapon he was looking for.

"Beyond" is definitely my favorite of the reboot films, and certainly up there as one of my favorite Star Trek films overall. When I first saw this film and was watching the "Sabotage" scene, my thought was that their radio jamming scheme would simply cause the drones to go out of control or become inoperative. Having them spontaneously explode as they get within spitting distance of the Franklin doesn't really make much sense... but holy crap, the image of the Franklin surfing on waves of fire with the power of "classical" music as they avenge the Enterprise was so awesome I don't even care!
@ukmediawarrior
@ukmediawarrior 4 года назад
I would say the best of the Kelvin timeline without a shadow of a doubt, but the best Trek movie ever? No, not by a long shot, lol. But I respect Rowan's opinion as always. I think the reason Wrath of Khan is so often at the top of peoples lists is that we had three entire series of TOS crew, years of being with them and growing close to them, and Khan was a pay off to a degree, more so than The Motion Picture was. It gave us an older Kirk who saw his life going nowhere, but by the end felt rejuvenated .... actually the same as we see in Beyond, but with a MUCH younger Kirk who has only Captained the ship a couple of years, which is one reason I don't like Beyond. They destroy Kirk's love of exploring after only a few years as CO of the Enterprise while with the original crew it took two five year missions and several years as an Admiral before he got there which is much more believable. BTW how can be up for an Admirals job already?! He got bumped from Cadet to Captain in the first movie and now after a few years as captain of the Enterprise he is being offered an Admirals position?! I think the same reason could be used for why so many people list First Contact as their favourite Trek movie, we had SEVEN seasons of TNG and a movie before we get to Contact which is basically Wrath of Khan for TNG crew. Theres payoff in Contact, a payoff we don't get in Beyond simply because we have only had two other movies with these characters. We didn't have the time to bond with them as we did with the original Kirk and Co. and the TNG crew. Another aspect of Beyond I don't like is the plot, it makes no sense and has plot holes you could fly the Enterprise through. The Yorktown Starbase is ugly and ridiculous. Why the hell would they make a space station that looks more like a piece of weird modern art. It's layout and function has no reason to it. Why would they build this, one of the biggest most high tech starbases they have right next to an unexplored nebula?! Are they asking for trouble? Why didn't our bad guy remember where he crashed his own starship? As to the argument that in this movie we see the crew helping each other which is something we don't get in other Trek movies that is just plain wrong, First Contact would be the perfect argument to that. Also Beyond DOESN'T send the ship off to explore strange new worlds, they get assigned to map the nebula on Yorktown's doorstep (something many episodes of Trek have had as their plot) and get destroyed ... that's hardly exploring new worlds and new civilisations, lol. As to the point about the argument people have that the new Trek movies are just dumb action movies with no heart, yet Beyond is better than that ...? Do I have to remind you they hired the director of four Fast and Furious movies to direct Beyond, LOL. You don't do that if you are looking for more heart and soul and less action in your film :)
@lokitus

I agree. I think Rowan, as usual makes really good points. But the plot is so clumsy: the visuals are good (no lens flares, etc.) the background music is good, but the writing is still poor. And poor writing gives cardboard characters. And putting to fine a point on acting is pointless with poor writing. I remain unmoved and still think the latest installment still misses the heart of Trek. It's those missing elements that made the Wrath of Khan sooo good.
@ukmediawarrior
@ukmediawarrior 4 года назад
@lebela I can see you argument about the Yorktown, but I simply can't agree, lol:) Why build, in your words 'the epitome of practicality, a status symbol' on the edge of unknown space where probably no one is going to see it? I admit I haven't seen this movie for ages, so can't quote McCoy, lol, but from what I recall it's simply the next starbase in line, pushing the boundaries of Federation space further into the unknown, it was never meant to be this spectacular awe-inspiring piece of diplomatic firepower. I may be wrong about that and it may be described as such in the movie and if so I'll recant;) However why build such an ugly piece of impractical engineering? Why design it so it HAS to have advanced artificial gravity because it has loops of itself bending over and around at odd angles in such a way people would just fall off it otherwise. Why not build a practical starbase as we see in TNG and the movies with nice and practical floor by floor design? If you are pushing the limits of known space into the unknown where any potential enemy might hide do you build a fragile piece of art, or a sturdy functional base to send out your explorer ships from? But at least we are in agreement that it is the best JJ'verse Star Trek movie and that is down to Simon Pegg writing the majority of the script as a Trek fan and it shows. It is much better made, looks incredible and the acting is on point. I think Karl Urban is perfect as a younger McCoy :)

@@ukmediawarrior So with Yorktown... Well. I don't have a problem with its design. I actually think it looks rather cool, and it's impressive that they were able to accomplish such a thing. Which brings me to my argument. For the sake of the story, the Federation built this because it shows off how intelligent they are and what they're capable of doing with technology. Nothing more. Is it practical? No. Is it fear inducing to people living there? Most assuredly. But it's a symbol to possible rivals, as well as current ones, that "We're smarter than you". Or at least that's what I took from it.

The entire crew gets something to do, it's not just the Kirk and Spock Action hour, and more importantly imho, the Enterprise crew solves their problems with intelligence, resourcefulness, and using elements established on screen, combined in new ways. The establish the "solidifying gas" and the motorcycle, and in the climax Kirk uses both to essentially create a "real life" Tron bike tool. Brilliant writing that shows these guys are Smart.

Star Trek Beyond may not be completely dumb, but it pretends to be and that’s it’s problems. The themes you cite are there, but they are overwhelmed by the spectacle of the bike ride, the sabotage surfing, and other action sequences. What’s more, the thematic conflicts aren’t really executed all that well. The struggle for identity gets lost behind a superficial presentation of xenophobia vs open-mindedness. That thematic confusion combined with the overwhelming action sequences makes the movie feel like a frenetic jumble.

This is why The Undiscovered Country is so great. Characters have to evolve and change and not get rooted in the past and old ideologies. It's such a genuine Star Trek story - of course Edison predated the Nero thing and was isolated the whole time so him and his planet and his plan would have existed in the primeverse as well, I like to imagine the same movie happened there, just with a different ship because the Enterprise was elsewhere. Or maybe some Klingons happened to fly past and Krall and the swarm got wiped out by accident because they were blasting Aktuh and Maylota over comms.

I wouldn't put Beyond over Khan, but it's the best since The Undiscovered Country. It's too bad the Kelvin timeline movies didn't start with something more like Beyond. I didn't make any attempt to see it until it popped up on Amazon prime since I loathed Into Darkness so much I'd written off the series as a lost cause.

I love the ST Kelvin timeline, and am also a big fan of Discovery. I have to admit, I wasn’t crazy about Beyond. Visually, it was awesome, but it seemed to fall flat. After watching this, I’ll definitely give it another chance and pay more attention. There’s clearly more to enjoy than not.

Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country, and First Contact may get a nostalgia bump at this point, but I think they still score highly if you compensate for that. ST09 was fun but a bit lacking, Into Darkness was an embarrassment I'll probably feel better about when I get around to seeing it again, but Beyond was what the Kelvin movies should've been all along. Though I think the themes kind of fell to the side when it was time to punch Krall until a resolution fell out, but until then it's so very much about cooperation, exploration, IDIC, strange new worlds, hope, and peace. It was the Star Trek I wanted to see in 2016. Also it has the best interpretation of the TOS uniforms. I remembered liking the 09 uniforms a lot, but coming back to them in the retrospective they don't have the punch I was expecting, and that's because I've since been spoiled by the light redesign that Beyond brought in. I also appreciate the Enterprise uniforms on Discovery, but they're a transitional thing between the excellent Discovery 23rd century uniforms and what they're "supposed" to be wearing.

Did not like STB: (1)the drone ships slice through the Enterprise's hull easily, but during the final battle, the starship is inexplicably destroying the drone ships by crashing into them (after it was already demonstrated that their composition is harder than federation starships). (2) why would Krall abandon his old starship as a base of operations to camp out in a gully? The ship would be better fortified, have more amenities- it reminds him of bad memories? Then do some re-decorating. (3) one of kall's gripes he felt abandoned by the federation. But, there were drones on the planet which he used to capture ships--he used one ship to send his spy to Yorktown. Why not use the captured ships to escape the planet in the first place? (4)the whole starbase was visually impressive, but not practical. Who wants to live in a snow globe in space where only the only thing separating you from the vacuum of space is some glass? Oh, where should we put our giant snow globe? Near an unexplored nebula where a federation ship disappeared a 100 years ago. What could go wrong? (5) making sulu's character homosexual seemed superfluous and unnecessary--it felt like an unnecessary attempt at fan service that misfired. (6) the villain's motivations and scheme did not make sense. Utimately, it seemed like the film-making strategy was to visualize some specific sequences: enterprise being destroyed, saucer section falling over, "sabotage" battle scene, motocycle rescue scene--then, they tried to write a script around those scenes. Utterly underwhelming. For further information: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N6dkJX-ybfA.html

While I wouldn't say "Beyond" is the best, it is one of my favourites (I'd but it 3rd behind Undiscovered Country and WoK). I truly love all 3 of the Kelvin timeline movies! I would have to say my ranking of them actually goes in order 1. Best. (Virtually perfect film) 2. Overall nearly equals the quality of the first… virtually overall just as good. 3. This one was awesome, slightly different than the previous two but bigger, flashier, simpler, easy to rewatch! To be clear even though I ranked them 1st, 2nd, & 3rd… I enjoy all of these films individually close to equally.

I like this movie too, especially after not liking the first in the series and being a bit on the fence about Into Darkness. Which surprised me, because the trailers didn't sell the movie to me in the slightest. Its a solid movie, full of good character development, great chemistry between the crew, excellent battle scenes, subverted expectations and a good overall theme to the story. First Contact is still my favourite overall, with Wrath of Khan being a very close second. But Beyond is very possibly my third favourite.

The Kelvin Timeline really got the shaft from the fan base. I've heard so many fans call them dumb movies, or complain about the designs. It's an Alternate Timeline! Some things are going to be the same, and other things will be different. The comic series really showed this. Several issues were retellings of TOS episodes, but with slight differences. Example: Only Gary Mitchell gets powers. Bones is the CMO instead of Piper.The lady doctor isn't there because she and Bones had a relationship that ended badly. I hope they either make another movie, or make more comics.
@PraxesArdenn

People probably called them dumb movies because they're dumb movies. All of them are brainless action movies that have multiple plot holes you could drive a starship through,, and none of them have anything interesting to say. Beyond being the best of the three isn't a very high bar, it clears it simply by being relatively coherent. Ultimately it's a movie about multiculturalism overcoming a space white nationalist by shooting it with pop culture.

I was a child when there was only one Star Trek and was always a fan. I agree with most of what you said. I have to say this film felt the most like what I experienced watching the show as a kid. I liked finally seeing the Kirk I remember in a completely new adventure while he’s in his prime. It has all of the Values I associate with ST and I get to have a lot of fun at the same time. That’s the the Star Trek of my memories. (Mature Kirk has a brief appearance in the ‘09 movie. Before he and Spock beam to the bad guy’s ship he orders Sulu to fire on the Romulans if he gets a clear shot weather Kirk and Spock are there or not. Kirk is back, baby.)

Honestly I think you make excellent points, and I enjoyed the movie as a roller coaster on its own. However the main failing I found here was that it never earned any of its emotional climaxes as A) the movies leading up only ever tried to coops nostalgia instead of building its own characters in a larger context, so nothing lands heavy, only rings hollow and B) it never slows down. My favorite part of this movie was the drink with McCoy as it was the only breath the movie took. Its good, but what makes the others great were the actual legacy of the characters being built over time and embraced. I am not an authority nor is this my channel, just a comment from the other side.

I agree with your views on "Beyond" - it also made one further correction to the JJ-Kelvinverse era films which I personally greatly appreciated; it switched out the Beer Brewery interiors of the Enterprise and instead ( through CGI set extensions) gave us ship interiors which looked as if they belonged inside a 'real' Federation Starship. Pegg & Lin's LOVE of Trek help to ensure Beyond became the best Trek film from this iteration of the franchise.

Absolutely agree! This is my favorite of the Kelvin series. It perfectly captured everything I ever loved in the entire Star Trek franchise. Flawed? Which of the movies isn't? Pine finally nailed Kirk's character squarely. And by far, the best destruction of the Enterprise...ever. My personal gripes are the identities of the villains. Instead of human origin, the makeup was perfect for a Cardassian. And the "bee swarm" drones were also perfectly designed as Breen. I was actually let down upon the release, because all of the teasers and trailers had me pumped and expecting Breen led by a Cardassian antagonist. But this was a perfect Star Trek entry. I can't say it's my utmost favorite, but I'll agree it's fundamentally the best.

The only things I didn’t like about this movie were the angled back pylons on the enterprise but it isn’t super noticeable in the movie but very noticeable when looking at a model. And second would be the constant camera cutting during the battle on the enterprise because I couldn’t get a feel for the area like the saucer sep room. I just found it annoying. Aside from those nitpicks I loved it.

I respect this channels opinion so even though I really didn't care for this when it came out I gave it another watch just now. Unfortunately I still didn't appreciate it even going in with the points brought up in this video. And it's not that I'm some Kelvin timeline hater as I really enjoyed the fist movie and thought the Into Darkness was also pretty good save some really forced scenes since you know...Wrath of Khan influence. This movie just didn't do it for me. First off it starts off with a funny tiny aliens scene and then falls into the previous movies issue by copying the Kirk / Bones scene....It works for Wrath because Kirk IS older. It doesn't work in Beyond because we literally just saw Kelvin Kirk become a full fledged captain the past movie. We have no history to this character and more importantly- Kelvin Kirk is in his prime, he is still commanding the Enterprise. It's like Spock said - "Commanding a starship is your first best destiny"....it works because that Kirk was old, he was no longer in command of the Enterprise. The loss of the Enterprise was also well...poorly done. I mean nowadays the Enterprise gets destroyed every 5 minutes but when it was lost in the Search for Spock there was a reason...Kirk sacrificed the ship to save the crew. This time there is no sacrifice so there is far less emotional attachment. It's like it's done just to check off a list. There is just too many plot holes. Uncharted Nebula that is within reach of shuttle ship? I mean the Yorktown looks gigantic like a freaking Halo ring or something. So what, this alien inside is from a species that has never been encountered before? Why not? Like, how did the antagonist know the Enterprise had the macguffin on board? And even if he did, how did he know that would be the ship sent? His army of drone ships seems pretty strong, they took out the Enterprise in minutes....if that shuttle pod could get to Yorktown...why do they even have to lure someone in? Is this movie worse than say The Final Frontier? Nope...which by the way IS the Enterprise going where no man has gone before as well. I'd say after watching the review and then re-watching I did appreciate it more but it couldn't get me past the plot holes which are way more numerous than what I mentioned. It's STILL an enjoyable movie, I'd say I would move it up in the ranks from where I had it...maybe lower middle tier? To each their own though. If you asked 100 fans to rank all the Trek films you'd probably end up with zero matching lists and some large variety in rankings...although please tell me Final Frontier is the worst lol. In the end we all generally love Trek and that should win out over everything else.

THANKS! I couldn't stop thinking about all of this very same things as this guy just kept going on and on praising the movie. Yes, the "feeling" of "old trek" is there but only for the sake of referencing the source material. In the end it's just another story of a mad man who couldn't let go the past and has a doomsday device that threatens the entire United Federation of Planets. Just like the other kelvin movies, but with some eye candy for new and old viewers, but nothing for the critical ones.

I agree that it is good, definitely in the top 5 or even 3. My only gripe is that in going "beyond" the movie just circles back around to the Federation, ie the "aliens" are really mutated proto-Federation military. I'm wondering if it would be possible to do a film focused more on exploration without seeming like a monster-of-the-week episode on a bigger budget.

I loved the movie, but eventhough i didnt check i assumed it would be disliked - like many things i enjoy. I especially enjoyed the camera style (being a photographer myself i know a thing or two about composition and focal lengh) and way how the colors looked, it was not only a joy to watch on my (bit older) hdr 4k tv but also felt purposefull in selecting when and what shal be bright, neither do i enjoy a skittles look rainbow movie that just puts the RGB ruler to 100%, nor do i enjoy rapidfire cuts where you dont even have the time to realize whats going on until the camera cuts to the next place. Both Wide and close, as well as far and tight make sense and i saw manytimes the use of a smart foreground object to empathize size to really make the viewer understand how HUGE a ship is. Plus colors where bright where they needed to be and especially versus the MCU, they had contrast, but no oversaturation. - at the sabotage scene i was a bit confused at first and thought "oh no - cringe ahead" but after a minute in the scene it made sense, showing Kirks "rebellous rough ryder" background in a futuristic style, plus i would have put on a similar song during that scene myself - when one does yolo, he shall yolo in style :-D . On the fight scenes: I much more prefer way of cutting where the camera is like a "referee" view, trying to dodge out of the way of the contenders, allowing the viewer to actually understand the force behind kicks and the way they fight, moving from side to behind actors and back - not jump cutting, especially in fight scenes a jump cut makes it very confusing to follow "why did he grab that there, it wasnt there before" . Also it helps that it has a set cast with 1-2 new characters that are only relevant to the given movie, not like the MCU that gets 3-4 new "main characters" in each installmnet and tries to fit them all in with screentime in every installment there on, making the movies a undirected randomfest where the director just tries to give everybody his 5 minutes... (its safe to assume that you now understand how much i liked the mcu before the first two avenger movies (up to Ultron plus the first GoG) and how much i was alienated by them in the latter two years ) Movies should strive to explain the characters, transport their feelings and reasoning and be purposefull in what the actors do and say - that is fan SERVICE for me (delivering a good movie), fan service isnt just trying to shoehorn in every character there is just to walk by and drop his standart line and then vanish again until the end climax of the movie... And obviously since the heroes get stronger each time, the next villain needs to be stronger as well but how far can you go past "Destroying time" and "destroying the universe" ? ...

I don't know if it is "the best" Star Trek movie. Definitely a candidate for the top spot. But it is by far the most "Star Treky" of all the movies. It felt like a good episode of the TOS. All of the actors were on point with their characters. You could tell that with a 50 year old franchise each of the actors were all born into and raised on Star Trek. From Karl Urban's dead on impression of DeForrest Kelly's McCoy to the way Anton Yelchin brought in his experience as a real life Russian (immigrant) to his portrayal of Ensign Pavel Chekov. The chemistry that we all loved in the relationships that the characters have toward each other was there in spades. What Michael Lin and Simon Pegg did was to get past the problematic plot points of the origin story of the Kelvin Timeline. Like Kirk being promoted to Captain straight from Cadet w/o any seasoning or time of training. Now how Barry Stew is that? The continuing fight over what corporate entity has ownership of Star trek movies and the tragic sudden death of Anton Yelchin makes Star Trek Beyond by far in all ways the saddest of all the movies. Because just as the cast and crew were finally hitting their stride after two okay but problematic outings it all stopped and may never start up again.

As an old-school Trek fan I really enjoyed Beyond. There was the odd head-scratching moment for me, like why the Franklin had to be (re)launched the way it did and why it had a dirt bike aboard, but ultimately I think both were done for the fun of the scenes they set up and that's fine. Of the various deaths of Enterprises I think Beyond's is the best, with the way the crew struggle with increasing desperation to save the ship before ultimately failing. It's a shame that the franchise seems to have stalled after this one, especially since Karl Urban has now played two roles I desperately want to see more of him in. (The other being DREDD, of course.) Now back to waiting to hear about that on-again-off-again Tarantino movie. EDIT: Forgot to add that of everything in the movie, I think Yorktown is something Gene would have absolutely loved. The Federation dream given form.

I'd love to hear your take on how the Enterprise is treated in the Kelvin films, as opposed to the ships in the Prime timeline. I hear criticism like, the Kelvin vessel is treated more like a shiny centrepiece, rather than a character of her own, like how ships are shot in both films and TV before the 2009 film. I sorta half agree, it doesn't help how a lot of sci fi films and TV now have these grand, sweeping shots of ships or things, designed to make them feel big and bold and heavy, but not shot with the entire ship in frame, calmly, like it was a character that 'stands' in the frame of a shot. I may not be explaining it well, but I'd love to hear what you think.

I’ve never understood why some don’t like the Kelvin timeline films, they are a ton of fun and honestly have more rewatch ability than The Next generation films or original series films as they are not horribly dated, overly goofy, or noticeably Made on a restrained budget. I mean of the original series films only three were honestly good, The Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and The Undiscovered country. The only two really good Next Generation films were Generations and First Contact. The Kelvin timeline films however, I have loved all three.

I liked Star Trek 2009, pretty much hated Into Darkness, and loved Star Trek Beyond. As a longtime Star Trek fan, it was really entertaining while at the same time feeling as thoughtful as Star Trek should be. The action is great, the villain is interesting, and Jayla is a fantastic new character. So I'm not on board with Star Trek fans who lump it in with the other reboot films and hate it all. Crab apples, the lot of them. Though some of that feeling could have come from the marketing campaign for the movie, which did it no favors. It's a shame that the movie did poorly at the box office and put the Star Trek movie franchise into an ongoing hiatus.

Beyond has a few large problems to me. Yet overall it is by far the best of the Kelvin offerings, and a decent Trek film as well. Probably my biggest issue was the space battle which was not really a battle. Also how they dealt with the drones. They were a weak set up, and I can see it working. But not causing them all to go boom, fun as it was. :) Pew pew being something I'm very interested with, Star Trek II is still undisputed king there.
