Speaking as someone who had a real emotional connection with Last jedi, I think the sense of nostalgia is drying up, so the market is shrinking because all my friends who aren't devoted to these fanbases or have strong opinions about this stuff, just don't really care since there's like a million other things for them to watch and the novelty of familiar star wars being back has completely worn off.

I agree with Jeremy Jahns the first Order isn't threatening. It also wasn't a smart Idea to do Resistance vs. First Order it makes the entire Original Trilogy pointless because the Empire came back and took over with ease. They really should have planned the Trilogy better. Star Wars is not an every year franchise it's supposed to be an event franchise every 3-5 years.

honestly i think the problem with star wars is that its getting over saturated to the point of insanity, also not to mention the star wars games by EA is running the franchise to the ground, Also to getting rid of the expanded universe didn't help matters either because by getting rid of the expanded universe you eliminated tons of great stories and great characters like darth revan darth malgus grand admiral thrawn Kyle katarn the list goes on and on. point is Star wars needs major help.

Tevya Smolka Not to mention that Kathleen Kennedy ruined Star Wars by putting forced feminist agendas in Last Jedi. And you know that it was feminist bs because they made their own female characters but only focused on making them strong female characters and not really making them likable (Rose and Holdo) Or are perfect at everything with little flaws (Rey) instead of adapting the Extended Universe female characters like Mara Jade. It's a shame because i thought Finn was really interesting in this new trilogy and they decided to push him aside in some pointless sideplot.
@TevyaSmolka
@TevyaSmolka 6 лет назад
yeah that's true man because i personally felt Rey and Finn had so much potential to be a interesting character but like you said bad execution which is such a shame because both characters could have been good.

I kind of like episodes 2 and 3 honestly. I grew up in the 2000s so they seemed pretty cool and recent, while the OG star wars movies at some points seemed too old. Now that I'm older I see the value in the originals, but the prequels are pretty nostalgic for me. As far as the new movies go, I don't really like the direction Disney is going, though I liked Rogue One and The Force Awakens.

It's not a Boogeyman Star Wars Fandom is super toxic and has been for years. But with social media and RU-vid blowing up the way they have hate movements have sprung up and, it has lead to a very negative environment for all who are involved in Star Wars. This is not simply I did not like the movies here is why it has gone to the extreme of attacking the people acting and making the picture and not with legit critique just spouting hate and calling for people's jobs along with every type of sexist racist rants certain fans go on about.

I think Star Wars is way too big of an entity to be over entirely, but it certainly has lost what made it special. Speaking from my own experience, as a kid when a new prequel film was coming out it was a special experience. Each new release felt like a monumental event that I couldn't wait for. Now that Disney is cranking these films out nearly every year, it feels less like a momentous occasion and more like a sort of weird movie holiday. The thing i loved about the old expanded universe is that, while it was bloated and crazy, as a fan you could pick and choose what you wanted to learn about. If you didn't care what happens after episode 6 then you never had to read the books. But because films are a much bigger medium with a lot more impact on a property you're forced to accept it as part of the order of things. Ironically, by Disney taking over the brand it's lost it's magic. Like with the characters of DC and Marvel, Star Wars has been in-grained into the world's popular culture for far too long to die-off completely. It'll never go away, but the public's memory of it can most certainly change, and probably will if Disney keeps this trend going.

Solo: A Star Wars Story was pretty much doomed from the start. They had to switch directors, reshoot a vast majority of the film, which caused its production costs to skyrocket, was, as Ethan said, poorly marketed, but most of all, it came out 6 months after a highly divisive Episode Eight. You had general audiences who were simply burnt out, having recently seen a Star Wars Blockbuster, combined with a significant number of diehard fans who felt betrayed by Episode Eight and flat out refused to support the movie on principle. As for a potential remedy, I don't think it's possible. For myself, I have no plans to watch Episode Nine.
@njbauer02
@njbauer02 6 лет назад
The thing with the first six films is that it was one man’s vision. You could argue that it wasn’t all executed correctly but there was a goal. Lucas was going to make 7-9 but decided against it and all the better for it. If Lucas made those films, it would just be an add-on. With Disney telling LucasFilm to continue put stuff out constantly, Star Wars isn’t special anymore and Disney thinks it’s like the MCU but they are very different as expressed in this video. I think Star Wars should be put on hiatus for now. The movies are not that good, the television shows aren’t the greatest, Solo’s box office was disappointing, and the fan base is divided.

I don’t think that SW is dead, far from it. While some of the films are not as received as expected, they are doing well with their comics and shows. Their books are great too. I think as long as JJ delivers with Episode 9, people will continue to enjoy SW. I love Rogue One and Solo. I liked TFA and enjoyed TLJ. I think too many fans want SW to magically be the original films while also being completely different. I also believe that TLJ’s reviews made people less wanting to see Solo. On another note, some of us live in echo chambers and feel that our opinions are universal. I know a large group that like the more recent films and some who don’t. BTW, kudos to Tiffany for continuing to push her point while others keep talking over her.

No. I think Solo's box office total was indicative of releasing three big blockbusters within a week from each other. If the film released now or in December, It would have done better than what it did in May. Then there's The Last Jedi which is the best Star Wars movie since Empire Strike Back, but was very controversial due to it's message. TLJ's message is letting go of the path, which I think is a great message or mission statement for Star Wars. If I can boil my feelinf of this message in one quote it would "Clever things make people feel stupid and unexpected things make the feel scared" Phillip J. Fry. This quote perfectly describe critiques of the TLJ. Luke being a hermit, and wanting to stay far away from the Jedi's influence is a shocking concept, and subverts the expectation of Luke being this wise and powerful space wizard whom can crumble a fleets sized ships with nothing but his mind. Rey being just a person who exists, but just so happens to have a strong connection to the force is equally smart, and makes the force feel magical. Also Kylo being to angry, and pathetic person despite being in a "dynasty", and has obvious issues using the force is a clever way to enforce the message of the movie. I have a theory about Star Wars that will piss people off, but I honestly feel it's the case. I think people want all Star Wars movies to reflect what they saw as a child, which honestly will never happen. Mainly due to your childhood memories glorifying the quality of the Original Trilogy. The OT were good. Individually the only great SW movie was Empire Strike Back, A New Hope was good, and Return of the Jedi was just average and at times painfully so. The same can be said for the Prequel Trilogy as well, since people whom grew up with those movies can at most be in their mid 20's, and have fond memories of those movies. That is why I am seeing a more general defense for the PT even though not that long ago people were ragging on those films. Adults always glorify things from their past, it's just how our brain works, and Star Wars will forever be a victim of this. With that said, can't wait until 2026 where we get episode 10 and everybody will be mad at it for any reason.

Here's the thing with Star Wars, it's all a matter of the times we live in. Back when Star Wars first came out, the internet and media wasn't as advanced and Star Wars was this fresh new thing. So if someone heard of it, it was like some mysterious and incredible movie that everyone had to see to experience for themselves. The lack of better communication systems helped the Star Wars brand immensely. Now, we're at a time where everyone has instant access to everything that everything has to offer and Star Wars, even before Disney bought it, has become a franchise. Books, TV-Shows, cartoons, more movies, video games, you name it. So, due to the instant accessability of everything the franchise has to offer, Star Wars isn't suddenly this brand new thing that you gotta see to get the full experience. Now, you can just google everything. And that's what hurting the brand. If the sequel trilogy was released back when ROTJ was released, Star Wars wouldn't be in the predicament it is in now. Yeah sure, you still would've people who complain about the new trilogy, but word wouldn't get around so fast. Compare this to Marvel, whose emergence has took the movie industry by storm. Marvel compared to Star Wars has took full advantage of the media landscape of today. They are utilising everything the internet has to offer to their advantage. Comic book trivia became incredibly important to many people, not only comic book fans. You very often see videos on RU-vid titled something like "10 comic events that Marvel needs to make a movie about" or "10 comic book easter eggs you missed in 'insert Marvel movie' ". The constant osmosis of information about the MCU keeps it alive, information gets around very fast. So when a movie comes out, most of the people already know everything there is to know about the movie, except how the movie plays out. This helps tremenduosly. Sure watching one movie is pretty fun but the full experience of the shared universe concept comes in the form of constant replays at home, watching previous and later movies, researching references and easter eggs and talking about everything online. Here's where it gets tricky, Star Wars, as mentioned was already a full blown success with games, books, shows and everything when the sequels rolled around. However, before the extended universe got retconned there was one problem. And in my opinion it was the fact that the extended universe takes place in the same universe as the original trilogy. So, if someone were to bring those things to the big screen, you would either have to make a point on recreation of the events in the EU after Palpatines death or you create your own new stories. Either way, it would have its downsides. Sticking to the old stuff will get boring because it would be just the same stuff and retconning everything would piss people off. Marvel also was an enormous franchise before the MCU. But, the key differnce is, the MCU is not connected to anything that's happening in the comics. Sure, it takes inspiration from them, but it does not follow them. It has enormous autonomy in that regard. TL:DR: Star Wars doens't benefit from the media landscape of today and it's former source material, Marvel does

Force Awakens = Over $2 billion Rogue One = Over $1 billion Last Jedi = Over $1 billion Solo is an anomaly (for now) and not a referendum on the audience for a Star Wars movie. If you're watching this video chances are you know that nobody wanted Solo and you know all of the behind the scenes problems and you know the marketing did nothing for it. This movie shouldn't have been made and the fans knew it so they didn't care. The true referendum for Star Wars will be episode 9. If that is critically successful like the first 3 from the Disney era and the people who see it give it a high rating like with the first 3 then we can look at the box office. If it has positive viewer and critic reaction and it doesn't break a billion? That's an indication that even the Star Wars fandom is losing interest. It may still make 700 or 800 million and be a profitable movie but clearly if it doesn't do much better than that then it shows people are leaving the franchise, or are at least not as interested as they were before and you can expect that trend to continue. It's premature to call Star Wars over until we get through Episode 9 and we see where people's excitement is when we get news about the Rian Johnson franchise and the other one by the Game of Thrones dudes. For me personally Star Wars hasn't lose its shine. And there's nothing like being in a movie theatre as that score hits and the text starts rolling. Solo and Rogue One didn't have that and while they felt Star Warsy (Rogue One more than Solo) I was definitely excited. But having the experience of seeing Force Awakens, Rogue One and Last Jedi on opening weekend Force Awakens and Last Jedi gave me feelings not many movies can give.

It was incredibly bad for the franchise. The Prequels did nothing but ADD to the lore and created amazing new races, planets, concepts and characters. As someone who has grown up with Star Wars and had it present in my life pretty much since day one I am really sad to see all the negativity this franchise can generate. I think the main problem with Star Wars currently is so over zealous fan base who are turning a “bad movie” (I liked the Last Jedi but hey) into an excuse to harass members of the cast. I realize this is a very small portion of the greater Star Wars fan base, but the fact that the Kelly Tran deleted her social media speaks volumes. It’s okay to not like a movie, it’s okay to not like a character, but it is never okay to use racial slurs and hurtful comments to defend a bunch of movies you claim to enjoy. I feel like this coupled with the recent news about the man who played Jar Jar will make other actors hesitant to join the franchise. In conclusion, be excellent to each other. Don’t use your fandom as a weapon, use it as a way to connect with people all across the globe about something you enjoy. May the force be with you

I feel like Star Wars will never be “over” as a cultural thing, it practically changed blockbuster films, special effects, and the idea of a franchise film. I do think the “story” films have dimmed the magic a bit, but I think that the main films of the new trilogy are still solid. Force Awakens was exactly what it needed to be to rejuvenate the franchise, and, in my opinion, The Last Jedi felt like what I would think of as a “new” Star Wars sequel. Like, if after ROTJ, they’d handed off the sequels to a young filmmaker and this is what happened.

I will absolutely grant that I'm disappointed with the state of cinema today, and that superhero movies are partially to blame for that. However, I think the real problem is studios trying to produce blockbusters and not caring about the quality and not that superhero movies are the dominant form of blockbusters today. In fact, I'd say superhero movies are better than they've ever been. Before the first _Iron Man_ came out, good superhero movies were few and far between. Now there's still more crap than quality, but the ratio is far more favorable than it had been

Amazing Zero, not the same thing. The porgs were inconsequential, removing them from _The Last Jedi_ would have made no real difference. Removing the Ewoks from _The Return of the Jedi_ would have drastically changed the movie.

LucasFilms issue from the get go, wether you enjoyed or hated what Disney has done so far, stems from not having a coherent plan for the sequel trilogy. Star Wars went from saga films being mapped out ages in advanced by Hollywoods most famous control freak to now being this thing that is passed around the camp fire by storytellers that aren’t being given a narrative through line. I understand the idea of not wanting to hinder an artist but the very nature of the Star Wars saga is to tell a complete story through all 3 films. Star Wars is not Marvel, but even if you could follow that model LucasFilm, like everyone else in Hollywood, ignores the main lesson of the MCU... EARNING YOUR LEVEL OF IP SATURATION! The MCU did not jump out the date with a film EVERY year. They started with films released when they were ready. They took their time to get audiences invested and gradually earned the ability to make 3 uber successful films per year. Its apparent that there is no game plan at LucasFilm, otherwise plot threads that were deliberately created in Force Awakens wouldn’t be contradicted and out right ignored. Rumor is that Lucas put into his contract when selling LucasFilm that the so called original pre Specialized Edition films will never be officially released in any format because to Lucas ep 4, 5, & 6 and its myriad stupid changes are the ONLY version of the film moving forward. Sigh... damn you George! Lol like usual I love when you guys have discussions on creative endeavors like this. You should do ComicLine more often frankly. Never underestimate our wanting to watch educated thoughtful discourse on pop culture and storytelling in general. Id love to hear you discuss the current state of DC, Sony and every franchise out there failing to duplicate Marvel Studios success and why. Cheers!

Making Star Wars more real and relevant would realllllly help in the arena of writing some level of complexity of the good vs bad. Remember how Old Republic, the Jedi Order leaders themselves were fallen Jedi? In the new First Order, I was expecting there to be less “everybody here is a bad bad person”. Like DJ is honestly the best new character because he had some depth. Finn’s past should’ve been explored more in the films, and overall every new film character on both sides needed ...more. The Marvel and Dark Horse comics clearly had better characters to draw from, same with the games! AND BOOKS! Thrawn! Ahsoka!! Cmon.

Movies have ascended to the point where the standard star wars formula just isn't good enough but yet the fanbase is so decided in their opinion nothing else will do. If Disney had decided to go back to the old republic maybe they'd have generated enough hype with enough creative liberty to carve out a new franchise, rogue one was an excellent pallet cleanser it was still routed in a time people love but removed enough that they told a compelling story. If Disney were smart they'd backdoor kylo Rey etc into the universe outside of the main franchise which should have followed a consistent narrative for the evolution of the Skywalker family which I feel they're trying to do with Ren but in such an indirect way people aren't picking up on it

For me, I felt so tapped out after the Last Jedi. I severely dislike that film and to me, it really highlighted that Disney did not care. So I didn't see Solo for a long while, I was not motivated to go do the Disneyland thing, and I'm still bitter about the Last Jedi to this day, I do not accept it as canon. The worst part is, I've become very distrustful of Star Wars media as as a result of that film, I am generally very indifferent to the new material. And I'm a diehard fan, but I never wanted to see Star Wars go on forever. I'll always accept the occasional spin-off or side story but Star Wars is one of the greatest sagas of all time and one of things that makes it great is that it is complete. It has (or at least had) a perfect ending. I never wanted Star Wars to go on forever and have that ending ruined. Great art doesn't need to go on forever, no one asked Shakespeare to make Hamlet into a climatic universe and that's because it was already a prefect story. You don't need to make something last forever to enjoy it forever. I am and always was 100% content with just my 6 movies. And like I said before, extra content is fine because I can take it leave it, but to have so much extra content coming out all the time and Disney's choice to make it all 100% canon is absurd. Frankly, all this content also damages the specialness of the Star Wars IP. Disney needs to calm down and respect the sanctity of the story and universe over making money and I don't think they can ever do that.

Is _Star Wars_ over? Well, Disney isn't going to stop making _Star Wars_ movies. They paid several billion dollars for it and they're going to keep doing what they can to make it a worthwhile acquisition. So from that perspective, no. From my perspective, yes. I'm done with _Star Wars_ movies. After the atrocity that was _The Last Jedi_ I'm just not interested anymore. As far as I'm concerned, everything that came out after _The Return of the Jedi_ is just fan-fic, and I don't recognize the bastardizations of the original trilogy that came out in 1997.

When I heard there was going to be another trilogy after the one we’re having I thought this is enough. And I thought after this trilogy that we’re about to finish I want it to be over cause the prequel trilogy explained how everything happened which is ok and the original trilogy did it’s story and had a good ending. We didn’t need any sequels but hey to introduce Star Wars to the new generation fine. Because the week before the force awakens my sister had me watch all the Star Wars movies so I can be ready and that’s how I was introduced to Star Wars. So it did it’s job. But somethings have to die or stop. You already have the movies, shows, the many books and comics, and more. Love Star wars but I feel like they need to take a brake so fans can breathe.

I would love to see the Star Wars move beyond the Rebel vs Empire timeframe. If Solo had done better, i think a Boba Fett movie made in the vein of Eastwood's spaghetti westerns could have worked. You could also have crime films and i think a republic era jedi quest film could work as well. I want thr Skywalkers to go away and for the movies to open up the universe the way Marvel has opened up.

In general star wars lost it's crown as pop culture king,marvel owns that now. Disney created a ton of merchandise while at the same time insulting their fanbase and creating divisive movies,the general public doesn't care enough to buy a rose or finn merch,they want yoda or vader. Losing your hardcore fans and not pumping new blood to the franchise is crippling star wars,this makes disney just market older stuff like the clone wars and forget about the new era so that remaining fans stick around.

The books that people liked the best were always the 3 Timothy Zahn books and there's a reason for that: They continued the story after Return of the Jedi with the same characters but added a new badguy and a few more force users. Nobody gives a shit about the Han Solo trilogy or any of the other filler bullshit that they tried to do.
@rahava
@rahava 6 лет назад
The center of the Star Wars universe is the conflict between the Jedi and the Sith and if I go to see a star wars movie I expected to see space wizards with magical force powers fighting while a space battle occurs in the background. You could have a 100% successful star wars film without ANY of the old characters as long as there's a Jedi main character who is connected in some way to luke skywalker who is fighting against evil darkside users over the fate of the galaxy.
@rahava

The fact that a 3 generations old franchise in a basically dead genre (children's Fantasy) that are forced into a specific aesthetic and feel that was dated 40 years ago, can make billions at the box office is a gawd damn miracle! But because it's called Star Wars somehow that fact is worthy of doomsaying? *Star Wars is not the King of franchises and that's okay.* Are there problems with the franchise? Yes, none bigger than fan entitlement & expectation, which is absurdly well documented on the internet. Disney took a Film Franchise and announce that all of the ancillaries are of equal importance, regardless of medium, leading to alienation of the masses. Star Wars Stories are just more fucking Prequels, which regardless of franchise never really work, and worse they're Prequels about contrivances & a Star War is 30% contrivances. That said I personally think the new Trilogy has great characters, thematics (especially Last Jedi), look, feel, and are genuinely way better than such a corporate dead horse of a franchise has any right to be and am very much looking forward to episode 9. If they decide to do another run of Saga films (ep. 10-12) I'm onboard for that, and I'm the type who doesn't give a crap about cartoons, comics, merchandise, hell I don't even want a Lightsaber (unless it's actually real cause yay!). But I also wouldn't care if it stopped because Star Wars irrevocably changed American Cinema (and Capitalism) for better & worse. It can't do it again, but because it did it's legacy is cemented. Is Star Wars over? It can never be over it's Americana that's as ingrained as Superman or Johnny Appleseed (and that's coming from a Canadian who's always wary of 'Murican influence) it is culture to a country, regardless of how much money it makes.

For me personally, I have very little interest in what's going on with Rey and Kylo, i don't really like what JJ did with episode 7 to trust him to do something amazing with episode 9 and he was already on thin ice for the "Guys, John Harrison isn't Khan, I swear he's not Khan *movie comes out* okay so I may have lied to you" with into darkness. I'm also not a fan of the "story" films either because either it's clear where they're going with it at points(solo with the "don't trust anyone" advice) and others it's just not engaging (Rouge one). Last jedi has really just killed all momentum I had coming into star wars under Disney after. And I'm of the general belief Rey is a Mary Sue and Rose was poorly written, I'd much rather have a character like Ahsoka in Rey's place and Bo-katan or Sabine in Rose's
