Why Subtick makes CS2 feel worse

In this video i try to explain why subtick might be a net nagative for the game, at least when used in combination with 64 tick servers.
I ignored ping and other ticktiming delays as we are just comparing the delay from input to
animation to server tick directly.

damn if only there was a well known method to get better responsiveness than 64 tick while still keeping the benefits of a fixed interval simulation

This explains why when you defuse a bomb and visually watch the circle close it still blows up in your face. Bomb was defused client side but not sever side.

Gutes Video! Wollte eig. auch mal eins drüber machen weil subtick meinen Playstyle kaputt gemacht hat und es sich einfach wie COD spielen anfühlt aber war einfach zu faul 😅. Danke das du dir die Arbeit gemacht hast 😁❤

Die Vorstellung war echt stark - mega Schauspiel, tolle Regie, und die Story hat mich voll gepackt! Aber die Bilder... naja, die haben irgendwie nicht so ganz gepasst. Teilweise sah es eher wirr aus und hat die Stimmung eher gestört, als sie zu unterstützen. Schade, weil der Rest echt gut war. Vielleicht könnte man da beim nächsten Mal noch was rausholen.

The explanation is accurate. And the solution for movements seems on paper good. (the 128 ticks servers won't happen). If they keep the instant hitreg position + firing animation (next frame), I won't be bothered to have movements on ticks (or half a tick to reproduce 128 ticks GO movements).

Please send this to valve email, loved it. Great explanation for everything we are feeling, this game is on a strange way and moving and spraying is really bad still, it was worse before, but still far from good...

Super good explanation on the pros and cons of subtick, actually a guy who knows what hes talking about. I'd say around 95% of posts of subtick in reddit is total bullshit and they have no clue what theyre saying XD Subtick does alot of things good, but yea, shooting a peeker becomes a little sluggish, can perhaps client/server interp values help alleviate that more, i remember they did a pass on that in the beginning, and it help alot i believe. Before that it was crazy, i remember literally people buying mac10's and shit on buyround since interpolation values was sooo bad XD I really like subtick, but i dont like, how you explained, thats a variable degree of input-to-server pickup, due to them using timestamps and looking back in time.. A non subtick solution with 128 or lets be a little crazy here, 256 tick, it should feels pretty much like subtick does on the client, u know. If you have the FPS, and in theory the 256 would have the response time of 128, which would at that points be very close to 0, aka instant AND consistent feeling! Thanks for the contribution!

On your latter point: subtick is supposed to make 64 and 128 tick grenade throws exactly the same, so even this downside doesn't exist anymore.

it didnt make them the same. in the couple of faceit 128 days in the beta they were different.

in one round i shot at an "empty spot" and after the animation ended+tracers i got a kill. that's when the model popped out from the side. we don't have delayed bullets in cs, so that lad was on my screen with his model before i could see him on mine. this delay is annoying to play with and i feel like valve introduced this so it would shut us up about the 128 tick, it locked CSGO so it wouldn't be forced to make the game better. To avoid what happened in 2012, people did not play the new game until it got updated enough. it's cheap to do that.

CS:GO always gave me feedback to a headshot within 1-2 frames at 60FPS. With CS2 it's always 4-8 frames. Also the Subtick movement sucks so hard for counter strafing. In CS:GO I used to start shooting once I hit a low enough velocity, like 40 u/s. If you do that in CS2 your shots just go somewhere because the server thinks youre still moving. Ive been playing since 2014, I'm level 10 and have >4000h.

didnt they also reduce movement inaccuracy of a lot of weapons eg pistols and smg? Since cs2 i tracked hundreds of matches and the reason why my counterstrafing statistics are going down is simple: its just too overpowered to do the donk slide or just run and gun. its not like i cannot counterstrafe anymore, but it became natural to NOT do it so often anymore. thanks for your good german interpretation of the shit-tick situation.

I would have a question for you: Do you know when exactly every tick starts or ends in this game? Have you known it at CSGO, to align your moves to them? If not, why at most +-0.015s (on average +-0.015s/2), matters at all? Good players are capable of adapting, bad are not. Only one thing I agree: the tickrate could be higher, and it would be good to have commounity servers to provide the server operators with the opportunity of setting higher tickrate. Maybe Valve does not want to spend more onto infrastructure to operate the higher tickrate servers. But the official servers are a problem themselves. It is just bad to try to force the vast majority of the commounity to play on adminless servers. The quality of the scene is morally low enough by now, and will only further sink this way.

ok so subtick is faster on the client and that makes server feedback inconsistent. Shouldnt this make movement feel really good though? But it doesnt. Also i disagree with the 3rd party take. Good thing everyone plays on the same servers now.

Not sure If I understand correctly. You're saying that in CSGO, when I press a movement key, the animation will be played at the end of the tick? Trying to understand the explanation at 6:40.

128 tick would fix a lot in cs2.. just allow 128 tick at faceit.. i dont ask for more. as more cs 2 i do play.. as more it feels shit. But the second biggest problem of cs... holy shit.. run and gun is way to strong. even with ak and m4 its horbile how often bad people hitting shots will running or sneaking. It also feels like the enemys jiggeling with deagle completly missing the strafe, spraying with deagle and headshot all the time. not sure whats wrong.. but something feels off.. clear kills dont hit.. and off aim kills xD thats the new meta.. and i am not a newbe complaining about the game. 7k h 2.5-2.8k faceit elo..

Isn't there an even bigger discrepancy between server and client because of latency and the corresponding lag compensation. If I have 50 ping and I press my Movement key right after a tick happened. It takes the server around 4 ticks to receive my movement action or am I getting this wrong. Wouldn't this make it even worse than a maximum of 1 tick in delay?
