Why the 👑 Queen drove an Indian Daimler

When you think of Daimler, you think of Mercedes-Benz, and that’s perfectly understandable. Up until recently Mercedes parent company was known as Daimler-Benz. The name comes from Gottlieb Daimler, a German engineer who was a pioneer in early internal combustion engines, and founded Daimler Motors. It eventually became Daimler-Benz, named after the “father of the car” Carl Benz, even though both men hated each other and spent a lot of the 1890s in court suing each other over patents. And Daimler-Benz of course is the company we know as Mercedes-Benz today. But since I can remember the Queen had been driven around in Daimler cars, and although she has German roots, she wasn’t supporting German car industry. These were very British cars. So what’s the connection between the British Daimler company and the German one?

As an American, my only experience with these came by way of my Father, who spent enough time in Europe with the U.S. Army to become seriously infatuated with (among others) the Daimler-Jag V8. He told me about them for years until we came across one at an auto show. He actually owned a pre-WWII Mercedes sedan, a V8 BMW, and a Beetle he picked up new right at the factory. While working for a major German distributor during his time off-base, he got to set up new Porsche Speedsters for delivery, lapping them on the banked track behind the dealership, with many going to Allied officers. He also claims to be the first person to drive the NSU rotary engine in its test mule chassis, blasting laps at a then mind blowing 8-9000 rpm. Pretty exciting stuff for a 19 year old kid who'd grown up building stripped down flathead V8 1930's Ford roadsters....

Jag got 2 good V8 engines by the takeover, but failed to make good use of either. The 2.5 V8 when fitted the Mk2 Jag was a lighter and more powerful than the 2.4 inline6 by Jag. The 4.4 V8 beat the Jag 3.8 in a similar way. But the idiots at Jag suffered from the not invented here syndrome and refused to take these engines seriously.
@floydblandston108
@floydblandston108 2 года назад
@@basilpunton5702 - it's an interesting argument; if the absolute potential increase in displacement created by 'v'-type engines isn't required, is the inline the better type? Many German and English companies seem to have favored the inline, while here in the US "V8's are great", and sixes (even v-type) seem to be considered dull.

@@floydblandston108 I was alluding to the weight and power of the V8 engines. You are right about the differences between cultures.The Jag i6 were heavy and lower power compared to the V8's. I do not care what is the cylinder count. At 2.5l it is realistically top of 4 and bottom of 8 cylinders, there are exceptions mainly diesel 4's. Weight/power/fuel usage are what is most important.

Before you say it, Brits say "DAY-MLER", Germans say "DIE-MLER". I've picked one way to say it and I've stuck with it. To explain why Daimler became to use the Mercedes name, it was a brand name that they eventually used as their company name, maybe because of the confusion of using "Daimler".

There was also Austro-Daimler, which started as a sister company of german Daimler in Austria but became independent in 1909. They stopped making cars in the 1930s and went up in the Steyer-Daimler-Puch industrial conglomerate. In the 1970s now Steyer-Puch colaborated with Mercedes Benz to design and manufacture an off-road vehicle, which became the g-class.

There has been a bit of restructuring in what was the Daimler AG. We now have three companies: Mercedes-Benz AG including sub-brands Mercedes-Maybach (luxury), Mercedes-AMG (performance), smart (small cars), Mercedes-EQ (electric cars). Daimler Trucks AG selling trucks and buses under the brands BharatBenz, Freightliner, FUSO, Mercedes-Benz (again), Setra, Thomas Built Buses and Western Star. And Mercedes-Benz Mobility AG specialising on financing, leasing, insurance and fleet management. (Side note: Siemens Mobility uses the same term but does something completely different: building trains ...) People will remember that Daimler-Benz, Daimler-Chrysler or just Daimler was the name of the corporation behind all of it but that's not true any more with the recent split up. Now it's a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz Group ....

The really interesting part is that Gottlieb Daimler was born Däumler (pronounced "Doimler"). Nowhere is it mentioned why he changed the spelling of his family name. My best guess is that he wanted to adopt his name to British spelling (as there is no "Umlaut ä" in the English alphabet) when he started selling engines in Britain.

Very informative video about the two "Daimlers". But a small correction. While Tata Motors had a long relationship with the Benz company of Germany, Daimler Benz no longer has any share ownership in Tata Motors. While Tata bought JLR, they did have about 5-6% share, because Mercedes Benz car manufacturing in India had partially depended on the Tata Motors manufacturing facilities at one time. In fact Mercedes Benz India started as a JV with Tata Motors, who were then called Telco (short for Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Ltd.). Though over time Tata exited that JV and Daimler took a few shares in Tata Motors. But eventually once the co-operation was no longer required, and Tata effectively became a competitor through JLR, Daimler Benz divested its share of Tata Motors back in 2010.

@@TunedMercedes Well "competitive" is a subjective matter, though I had only mentioned JLR are a competitor. @TunedMercedes
@TunedMercedes Месяц назад
@@julupani this is a basic business school example actually. MB sets pretty much the market and then you have competitors to it that compete on power or other areas (bmw) and then niche manufacture that may dominate a segment like luxury off road vehicles, ultra luxury etc. I think range rover if they focuses on reliability it can continue to be a great brand.

The Mercedes name came about in 1900 - Emile Jellinek was a very wealthy individual and was the Consul-General for the Austro-Hungarian empire in Nice, France. He was a supporter of the Daimler company and acted as an unofficial distributor of the cars to his friends. Paul Daimler (Gottleib's son) had designed a new, more radical, car and Jellinek was so impressed, he placed an order for 36 of the new model paying a large amount of money up front. The new car was called the Mercedes after Jellinek's daughter. After that, all the cars were called Mercedes and later Mercedes-Benz, following the merger with the Benz company in the 1920s.

And also a similar topic that sort of bugs me: Why are Germans just SO BAD at naming their cars? They give those cars weird, forgettable and confusing alphanumeric names. The worst offenders are BMW, Mercedes and to a lesser extent, Audi. Why not just give those cars actual names that are easy to remember like "Guilia", "Passat", or "Camaro"? Mitsubishi Pajero apparently had to be renamed to Shogun in Portugal, because Pajero is a rude word there. German cars used to be quite logical in their naming system. A 330i used to be a 3 series with a 3.0 l engine with injection. Nowadays it is a bit more complicated.

It's worth recording that the Royal Family were almost exclusively Daimler users until the present Queen changed her allegiance to Rolls Royce in the 1950s. One reason was that the patented Daimler "fluid flywheel" preselector transmission made them ideal for low-speed parade work. From the mid 30s the British Daimler company made more money from their bus chassis than from the cars, the last buses coming off the production line in 1981. That same transmission which made for ease of driving was still a major selling point.

Absolutely fascinating. I never knew the two were related. I always thought the UK company’s name was pronounced Dameler while the German, Dimeler. Incidentally, my P1 teacher, Miss Langmuir, with whom I was in love, had a Dameler, sorry, Dimeler.

Nobody in the UK pronounces it 'Dimeler', at least, I've never heard it said that way. Most German brand name pronunciations get 'Anglicised' in the UK, either because of the spelling or because the German pronunciation is just too, er, German for us to get our tongues around!

no Mercedes tie in. Daimler tie in. The Mercedes brand name was created years later by Emil Jellinek, son of a Vienna rabbi, who became Daimler´s (DMG, Daimler Motorengesellschaft) first international salesman. Mercedes was the name of Emil Jellinek´s daughter. Jellinek´s first wife was from a Sephardic (Spanish) Jewish family in Algiers. Hence the Spanish name of their daughter: Mercédès

4:58 "The car company is now only known as Mercedes-Benz" Not quite. In some parts of the country, especially in the area around Stuttgart (Where Daimler is from) Mercedes (-cars) are often referred to as Daimlers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dETguedmF-4.html Here's the (green) prime minister of Baden-Württemberg joking about his company car.

That's the old rivalry between Baden and Württemberg, the former grand-duchy and kingdom making up today's southwest German state of Baden-Württemberg. Carl Benz came from Karlsruhe (Baden) and Gottlieb Daimler came from Stuttgart (Württemberg) so the same cars are now referred to as Benz in Baden and as Daimler in Württemberg. They are sold under the brand name Mercedes-Benz but most people will just say they drive a Mercedes (or Daimler or Benz).

Thanks! I always wondered how we got Jaguars under the Daimler brand. Daimler was and is still often used by workers of Mercedes-Benz AG (former Daimler-Benz and DaimlerChrysler) to represent their company. The say "Ich schaff beim Daimler" and they didn't mention neither Mercedes nor Benz. So... Daimler is still a thing in Germany, although is officially not used anymore for the car division.
