Even though most car experts and fans have forgotten about the 1984-1996 Chevrolet Corvette or C4 Corvette, doesn't mean this car is unworthy. Here's why this car is historically so very important and why you should give it another look.
As if that's not impressive enough, at this very moment ( July 19, 2020 ), the current standing 1/4 mile world record for ALL stick shift cars is in the low 7's .........by a twin turbo charged Camaro called: "Grub Worm".......even faster than the turbo powered Coyote Fords.......and get this: THE ENGINE IS AN OLD SCHOOL LT1 ( 327 cu in ) with a GM factory intake!!! How cool & impressive is THAT!!! It not only set the new world record, it stomped the competition & brought home the 1st place trophy, winning EVERY round. Look it up, right here on youtube. I'm no "brand loyal" snob.....I like all of the American muscle & performance cars, but I have to say, for several years, all of the Ford guys were bashing the Chevy guys due to that yellow Mustang that was beating everything & once held the world record itself. That is, until Grub Worm rose to the top. All of those Ford guys are suddenly quiet as a church mouse right now. I just wish all of the brand loyal snobs would grow up, and learn that most of the guys at the track, regardless of what brand they run, are actually good friends who even help each other between races when in a pinch. This includes the owner/driver of that yellow Mustang and the owner/driver of the "Grub Worm" Camaro. Nothing wrong with having a personal favorite........but real men don't behave like online bullies as "brand loyal" snobs.

You're absolutely right, the C4 was VERY significant in Corvette development--even though it was only 2 years separated from the C3, it was 20 years ahead from a technological standpoint. I remember when that car first came out---man, did it make some waves!
Yep. The C3 was basically an early 60s Mako Shark concept car updated for production in the late 1960s. Except for those old GM standbys like the door handles and ignition cylinder the C4 was a totally new car.
The C4 is one of those cars with a timeless design. If you look at one from the rear left or right as if you were walking to the door from the back of it, you really can’t help but admire that low and wide belt line that travels from the rear hatch and glides all the way to the front fender. This was the car that revolutionized the corvette into the supercar killer we know today. Great video! Keep it up!
Love my C4 (1992 convertible, LT1 engine) Corvette. The C4 is my favorite Corvette body style. Clean lines, ample power, fun to drive, easy to live with. I've considered buying a new one but I'd rather keep my C4 and put the money into her to keep her beautiful.
@@ad356 Yeah I heard about that and I wonder why the engine designers did that. I'm keeping a close eye on it. Otherwise a good ol' solid Chevy motor. And mine has the 4-speed auto transmission, which normally in a sports car I would prefer a stick but the shift points are mapped perfectly with the torque curve of the engine and the engine develops more than enough power to overcome the power draw from the auto transmission. (I like to have a beverage with me..er, coffee or a soft drink not alcohol, so not having to have a hand free to shift all the time is a plus) Still, sometimes just for kicks I run the rpm's up and shift her manually just have to watch the tach. I'll never see the top end of that car, that's for sure. Road & Track magazine tested the 1992 model (coupe, standard transmission, LT1 motor) and got the test car up to 167 mph; I figure mine's good for at least 150 mph. My 'Vette had 47,000 miles on it when I bought it in 2017 now just turned 55,000 miles, so she's got a lot of life left in her yet. Don't drive it for six months out of the year what with our winters here. My lady loves it she's a sports car gal. I've got a wild hair to try to pick up a '96 Grand Sport, but good luck on that one they didn't make many of that model and I'm sure they are worth mucho $$$ if I can find one. Have fun with your Z.
The ZR1 was a very Special Corvette. i bought a 1996 Vette New (Great Car) and now I own a 2004 Z06 Commemorative, that I bought New, and now has 132,000 miles on it. Still runs like new (LS6), does atleast 176 MPH, I ran out of road, doesn't leak a drop or burn oil AND, it's still on the original factory clutch. I drove it, bit didn't beat it. Great Car.
Had to make sure that hood wasn't opened for very long, those "aircraft landing lights" under the hood would drain the battery within 2 hours! Kind of embarrasing to have to ask for a jump start on your brand new Corvette! There were no "high tech" automatic "power off" in THOSE days! lol
This is the car I loved when I was in college. I promised myself one day I buy a Vette when I can afford it. In 2016 pulled the trigger at age of 57 for a Admiral blue base Stingray with chrome wheels. Best decision I ever made.

So at 58 I went and bought a 2014 STINGRAY.... 7 speed manual.... Now REMEMBER this , l havent drove a clutch car for 20 some yrs... Wow is this thing a sweet... Headers & cold air intake and shes WANTING to go.... l have built a niCe GARAGE just for this car ... Maybe a automatic is in my FUTURE down the road , but for now I'm having a blast... oh by the way I'm another PAUL M.

You forgot to mention all the international and world records that the C4 ZR-1 set. And the fact that the C4 ZR-1's top end (180+) makes it the fastest factory stock GM vehicle of the Twentieth Century.
Can't believe that one sold for under 40k at auction.. mad me a bit sad.. as a kid this was the One.. I can even remember people debated the 32 valve twin Cam Chevy.. Hahaha... Someday she'll be mine.. or any layer gen C4. Peace

I had a clean Black new 1985 Corvette, it to this day was one of my Top 3 favorite cars I've owned, it was way ahead of it's time & the last year model before the mandated 3rd center roof brake light. I worked for Guldstrand Engineering in the early 90's where we worked on many C-4 Vette's, I drove one of their 406 Lingenfelter Vette's with a 219 mph top speed in the early 90's Silver State Classic in Nevada, the best of times.

Yep. I think it has something to do with the Viper. Every kid and their dog jizzed their pants about the Viper starting in 92 and it just overshadowed the Vette
My brother owned a '84 and currently has a '03 Z06 with 17K miles. Drove the Z06 to Florida and it got better MPG than my WRX. No way you are getting anymore bang for the buck than a Corvette. I own a '91 NSX, the original owner paid 22K over list ($83K). Less bang, more bucks. Totally different cars.
the C4 sets new standards for sports cars, especially production sports cars in terms of handling and performance. it had capabilities unmatched and bested that of many of the finest and best from italy, britain and germany.

At the time we all noticed the C4 was a huge improvement over the C3, I was a fan the first time saw it. As you said for a car collector the C4 makes sense, it's a great all-around sports car and for now it's a bargain price. It's a beautiful car and will only go up in price as time goes on. Marten Trudeau I thought the C3 was great when it came out but the first time I sat in one I was disappointed - all you see is those huge fender flares. The C4 has cleaner lines than the C 5 or C6. The C6 has funny electric door handles too. ( not an owner).
I've just purchased an 84 myself. New fuel sending unit&pump, and she roared to life. There's a few other issues were working out, Headlights aren't popping up, for example, but she runs strong. A new paint job, and she's gonna be as impressive as she was in '84
I distinctly remember the build up to the C4's introduction. My buddy and I read everything we could get our hands on about it in every car magazine there was. When the new generation Camaro/Firebird came out, we were a bit disappointed, but when the C4 came out, we were ecstatic. Style wise, I prefer the C3, especially the chrome bumper models (prior to 1974 IIRC), but there was never any doubt that the C4 was an enormous improvement in every other respect.
Doug Lee I remember those days. I was a kid and would get any mag I could to see the spy photos with great anticipation. I loved the C3 at the time and my Dad had one in the driveway, but when the C4 came out I have to say Dad's vette became very dated overnight until they bounced back. While the press hated the gauges, I used to track down C4 owners while starting their card to get a glimpse of them. I always loved that generation.
As a owner of a 1995 LT1 6 speed coupe not much to say except I love driving this car. Flew to Albany, NY to buy it and drove back to Michigan what a blast for my 1st Corvette.
7/2024: Hello From The Future: i bought a 1996 Vette New (Beautiful & Great Car). Now I own a 2004 Z06 Commemorative, that I bought New, and now has 132,000 miles on it. I always thought that the BOSE speakers Sucked! UNTIL, I installed a Kenwood Quality Stereo. Night and Day Difference!! I wouldn't and didn't change anything after that. Great BOSE Speaker & Stereo sound and Great Car. Note: I put the car on a Dyno once. I stood behind it while the engine was turning 6,000 RPM! That sound was Beautiful. Never changed that either. The factory did a fine job on this car. Thank You for this Excellent Posting. The C4 Corvette still is a Beautiful, Remarkable and Affordable Car. I Loved mine. Best Regards
Nice video as always. It's often overlooked that a very near stock C4 ZR1 (and an L98 alongside it) set multiple FIA World Land Speed Records, including breaking a 24 hr land speed record that previously stood for 50 years, again in basically a stock production car. The records were only broken 11 years later by a one-off prototype race car from Volkswagen. I don't think to this day anything near a production car has surpassed those records.
@@johncollins7423 in the early 90's the Corvette was one of the few models making a profit for GM. Specifically options, most Corvette buyers spent big on options.

I remember racing over to the dealership the day the 84’s arrival was announced. I was stunned by how short and wide it looked. But it didn’t take long for that shape to grow on me, and today it’s my favorite American car design of the last 40 years. The C4 was best looking in its original iteration.
_Lots of good content here on the fourth generation Corvette. After having owned seven C4's, I still drive a clean '96 Corvette convertible today. For those negative comments here about the C4, just remember this generation saved Chevy Corvette from the chopping block. Subsequent generations were and will always be an improvement from their predecessors. Lots of great bargains out there for this generation though, consider this, a brand new 1996 Corvette convertible had an MSRP of near 50K, which is close to 80K+ today._
I own a 94 , they don't have huge HP like today's vettes , but the C4 handles extremely well at high speed, still has pop up lites, clamshell hoid is cool too!
The 90s ZR-1 Corvette was one of my favorite cars when I was a teenager (I would litterally daydream about this car during class) and I still highly respect this car even today. I would still love to have one! It is so far the only production Corvette with a four cam 32 valve engine.
The others had the Cam Shaft located lower in the block - where God intended for it to be. Pushrod engines are the majority of the Chevy 5.7 liter engines.
Sure.. but pushrods were never making anywhere near that kind of power in those days. The top of the line LT1 was barely breaking 300HP and at debut was like 215 or something. Even today, they have to go forced induction to get air through the small port area to take full advantage of what the bottom end can handle.
@@calvinnickel9995 LT-1’s never had less than 275 horsepower to my knowledge, and that was in the F-bodies. They had 300 horsepower when they debuted in the Corvette. Although I am a huge fan of, and actually prefer pushrod (OHV) V-8’s due to their simplicity, reliability, and robust low-end torque, I can’t deny the strong advantages provided by the OHC layout. DOHC with 4v/cylinder in particular allows for higher revs (due to individual pieces of the valvetrain, such as valves and no pushrods, being smaller and therefore lighter), better flow (more air in and out) etc. Edit: Also, pushrod engines wouldn’t have intake ports any small than any other design by nature. Actually, due to having more room in the top end without all those cams and whatnot in the way, there would be *more* room far larger ports. The restriction mostly lies in only having 2 valves per cylinder, as well as peak rev limits being lower as far as what the valve train can handle

@MrSrScott how much did you pay back then? Mine was 6 years old with 44,000 miles and cost me $10,500 in 92. Over $20,000 in today's money. It now has 86,000 miles.
I bought a 1985 Vette in 1990. I was at the dealer when a lady came in wanting to trade in the car thinking it was ready to blow. It was really running rough. The paint was fading also. Any way the dealer actually painted the car at no charge, and after I replaced the MAF sensor the car ran great. It did develop an oil pressure problem at I00 k miles. I thought I’d get lucky and replace the bottom end bearings through the pan but that had no effect. The cam bearings were the culprit. At speed the oil pressure was 35,38 lbs. of pressure but at an idle 0 ! The car handled magnificently and with chrome stock rims, bolt on exhaust and a window tint it looked great. Not wanting to pull the motor I sold it 4 years later. The idle oil pressure problem wasn’t a big deal just raise the rpms at a long light and not worry about it.
The C4 ZR-1 is a special jewel and its wonderful LT5 engine is the best motor GM installed in a Corvette ever. I know what I am talking about because I do work on these fantastic engines.
I don't know why but I have always had a place in my heart for the 1970 LT-1 Corvette engine. You could get bigger engines that year but the 70 LT-1 just felt right. Is true that the C4 Zr-1's came from the factory with synthetic oil?
Still have my 1989 Corvette convertible 6-speed and loved it from the moment I first drove it. The handling is phenomena, I was surprised how snappy it was with the factory h.p. .. However, after some "ad ins and on's" it's pushing 365 h.p and wow it is fun. GM really developed an exceptional, outstanding, and an astonishing feat of engineering with the C4. I have owned some older corvettes and test drove newer ones, but I really enjoy the one I have. One day they will be much more appreciated.

I had 2 of em. 1984 one black, one white. I rebuilt my black one, it ran like a rocket. 2SXE699 CALIFORNIA They were a DREAM to race. Doing over a buck 20 one hand on the wheel, Targa top off... Nothing like it.
I still get compliments in my 86 today, its a bit tired, and shows its age in places but still puts a smile on faces when I pull up in it...its an old car but still fun to drive.
I dunno, C4 owners seem to think their cars are worth more than anyone is actually willing to pay. They're always priced close to the price of entry of a C5, and the improvements made there are easily worth it if you actually plan on driving your car and not just looking at it in a garage. Corvette community is well aware of a plethora of issues on C4's and general rattly qualities that are not there on C5's. ZR-1's are too expensive for their performance these days when a C5 Z06 can be had for similar prices and outshines it.
My first Corvette was a 1993 C4 which I enjoyed very much and traded it on a 2000 C5 Corvette which was leaps ahead of the C4 but have considered selling it to purchase a C4 ZR1 more as an investment than anything as they are still good buying and will only go up in value.
I will always remember the c4 from my childhood as Face had one in the A team. They looked really exotic for their time, with the clamshell and massive tyres.
My wife just bought a 1990 C4 for her summer car this year. At first I was unimpressed. I’ve always been much more interested in old Dodge muscle. However, over the last few weeks, her C4 is really beginning to grow on me. Once I got used to the go-kart-like low to the ground feel, it started to be, well, kinda fun!
Finally there's a video about the C4 Corvette. Tbh, idk why ppl hate this generation so much, but I really like the styling. Heck, I'm getting one at the end of the month as I alrd moved to the States.
i love my c4 and the digital atari video game dashboard. i've seen this first as a child in the 80s on a video game called "test drive" on the commodore 64 and this was the most futuristic car. really happy to have a real one now as an adult =)

I'm still very fond of the C5. Beautiful lines and the wonderful lS1 engine. My experiences with the C4's has not been the same as others. I remember replacing the digital dash on my 86 twice and the 88 once. The 91 was plagued with cooling issues. They all drove like they were on rails but they were also one of the most harsh riding car's I've ever owned.
hi dzg, my used 90 coupe, the middle digital speedo and gas gauge, started disappearing the readings on me...had to remember the fuel level or make the gas station my first stop...I hope All the problems were fixed by 96, or the Covette c4 after that, would have died.
Let's be real here, Any Corvette you own is always going to hold a great value. You've certainly have the king of the 96's but hold on to it for as long as you can. I know the 84's and 85's were over - produced but the Corvette was NEVER compromised down for economical costs. Chevrolet never let their number one baby go the way of the T-Bird and Rustang. And every year they make them, they only make them more collectable. However the signature Corvette to me will always be the ones with the hide-away headlamps. Keep your baby happy!!! My dad has a 1973 big block 4 speed car all original numbers matching with every option... worth 50k on a really good day. By the time you factor inflation in today’s money the car cost 44k brand new... don’t get your hopes up the reason the C2’s went for stupid money was largely due to the economic collapse of 2008 and the uncertainty of the Obama administration. Won’t see those influxes again for a long time. Money is better spent on real investments. Drive it cause it makes you happy because they certainly arnt an asset
Mario G good for you. You certainly can make money restoring cars if you know the market and what it will cost to bring a car back to life... that being said if we still talking about c4’s I don’t know how you are doubling your money on a car that if is perfect may be at most worth 12k... those are slim margins and to me at least not worth the effort. Hopefully by restoring you mean refreshing and not doing a frame off restoration. Doing so kills the long term value and originality of the car.
I want one. Especially with those saw blade wheels. Ugh I just love it. It has those classic modern looks. The memories they brought when they were modern. It looks so futuristic, yet so old school. Chevrolet really thought outside the box with that one.
I have a 1994 C4 6spd in the bright aqua metallic (1209 produced) that I bought from the original female owner in Tucson Arizona in 2001 with 47 k miles on it. I've owned it 21 over years now and it still only has 56k miles. I love this car and will never sell it. To me it was one of the most beautiful Corvettes ever made and I could never replace it. I get a lot of complements when I drive it and take it too the occasional car show.
Best bang for your buck. We have a 93 6 speed tpi. I'll take it over any C3. 26mpg hwy, 300 hp, cold AC, starts right up. Great looking too. I just hate the cup holder. LOL
Great video on the C4, a lot of really good information. I just got a 95 C4 in January and I absolutely love it. 84k, manual, and in amazingly good condition. And you are totally correct about price compared to the other generations.
Ive been a corvette owner since 1970 when I bought a used 64 coupe . I now have a C4 a C5 and a C6 and agree that the C4 doesnt get the credit it deserves. There are differences in C4s I have an 87 ,the 88s have better brakes and went to 17" wheels . The early ones do ride rougher but I prefer my 87 to the 92 that I gave away as a gift. They are exceptional cars for the price in todays market. Dont pay attention to the lower H.P. ratings . One thing I really didnt like in the 92 was the dash and gauges. The 87 digital dash is fantastic and never been any problem. One last thing is forget the crossfire on the first C4s .Tuned port is a big improvement.
Virtually every car magazine comparison test between the C4 and its competitors pointed out its superior value, performance, practicality, and even gas mileage! That big V8 got better mileage then the rotary and most V6s. Still holds true today.
Just a few of the records held - 1990 L98 had record for 6 hrs @ 170.887 mph. ZR-1 has record for 24 hours (held for 50 years by the Mormon Meteor III) at 175.885 mph, 5000 K at 175.710, 5000 mile at 175.91 mph and 5000 mile traveled in 28 hours 46 min. 12.426 sec.

Offered one called 'the widow maker', Stinger, 427 and 4 speed. This '84 style always looked great. Never drove one but rode in one, Black Beauty red lined onto a freeway onramp. Pretty awesome !!
6:00 > It's worth clarifying that although 91+ adopted the rear ZR1 design, it isnt the same. The whole rear clip as well as bumper cover is significantly wider by a few inches. And I could be mistaken but I believe the door skins and rockers differ slightly
Glimmers of 1975 happened recently when Caddy just unveiled the new CT5-V with 355hp, when the last CTS-V made 640hp. They're just cashing in on the V name but now I can see what it was like when HP dove in the 70's and 80's.
I can't afford one, and I wouldn't buy one. Cadillacs have been sinfully ugly for fifteen years, all angular like some refugee from Blade Runner. It has guts for sure, but I can't look at the things without cringing. No amount of power can outrun that kind of ugly.
I'd absolutely love to have any C-4. There's so much you can do with them. I'd also love to have a Monza like the one shown at the beginning of the video!

At first I didn't think I'd like a C4 Corvette. I was used to driving my brothers 56, 59 and then other friend's C3's. I think the 56 and 57 are the most beautiful Corvette's ever made but I can't afford one of those. So, a couple years ago I went on the search for something I could afford. I found a bright red 1991 base couple with grey leather interior that had sat for awhile...so the price was right...had to replace the injectors, put on new headlight door motor's, etc. But now...I'm in love with the thing! The more I look at it, it seems the more it grows on me. And the clamshell hood is pretty cool, too. And the way it drives and handles? Way better than anything before...I've driven just about every Corvette from 1956 to 1995 and I can't figure out, now, why I thought the C4's were ugly and inferior. I love everything about mine. The ingress and egress leave a little to be desired, but once you get used to it, it's not too bad. I'm 66 now...and so glad that I got to fulfill my life's dream, of owning a Corvette. I'm still buying Lotto tickets, in hope that I'll someday be able to buy a 56 or 57. But I'm a pretty happy Corvette owner right now. Every day I am thankful for what I have! I've never been wealthy, but I have been poor...and it has taught me to be grateful...very grateful for what one has. Cheers!!

I owned a 1986 4+3 and it was a blast to drive. Great fun car and well ahead of its time. Every time I see a C4 it reminds me of many great memories of the 80's and 90's. In my opinion the ZR-1 will be a huge collector car of that era, along with the 89 turbo Trans Am, 87 Buick GNX and 84 Mustang SVO
The ZR-1's LT5 engine was built by Mercury Marine in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Lotus Group, which helped engineer the ZR-1, is today part of Malaysian-based Proton (the leading automaker in Southeast Asia) and still builds great sports cars today.
I worked on the lube rack at a Chevrolet dealership in the early 1990's. The dealership had a dedicated Corvette mechanic, he worked on a lot of the C4 Corvettes and the one thing that kept him the busiest was replacing the instrument clusters in those early C4 models.

I have to say that while my taste in Corvettes is drawn to the C6 Z06, I cannot belittle the C4, especially because I was born the same year it turned 50, as well as giving its little brother possibly the most underrated 350 in Chevrolet history.
I owned a 1988 35th Anniversity Edition. I just loved this car. The ride, handling and performance were great. My only issue was getting in and out. At 6'4 getting in without cracking the right side of my head was a challenge. The car was so much fun to drive.
Have a 85 bone stock no mods inside or out. 4th owner all elderly gentleman. Love to park at a store and when I come out there's all ways a crowd around it ! Classic Muscle that never goes out of style !!!
My absolute favorite C4 is the old body style, 6 speed, convertible, and the regular L98 classic SBC. It's unbelievable to think it, but that's only 2 years in the model run with with those options, very scarce for a M/T and ragtop. Out of those 2 years, the '89 is the "most C4" with the old interior and Atari dash. My second favorite would be a '96 GS with red interior, then anything '96 and LT4. Too bad so many old men ordered Automatics, lol.
