Why The Amazing World of Gumball's Finale SUCKS (if it is one?) 

What did you think of the finale? The narrator during the Rob segment is my good friend and voice actor, Micheal Edwards! - twitter.com/MEdwardsVA Also, I want to make it crystal clear that I don’t know for sure if this is a season finale. So I talked about it from the perspective of a series finale, a season finale and a regular episode to cover my bases.

This episode was basically an excuse to see the characters human oc's

Even this finale was bad, we can all agree on something: that ending music with Rob frozen falling into the void is bone-chilling, if not a little bit.

My only guess here is that the writers were trying to convey what WILL happen to their world if the series ends: It's over. Their world is put on a permanent hold. Like freezing time forever. And with time, memories fade. They become forgotten. Like the world of the forgotten in the show. Rob must have known this. Somehow. He and Tobias have figured out that their world sort of revolves around Gumball and Darwin. Tobias was for the comedy, Rob was for the actual shove it in your face kind. My only ideas are that Rob tried to warn everyone about the series finale. When he's falling through the hole and says it's happening, or started, he means the end of all of them has. The beginning of their end. They're going to be forgotten. And maybe he tried to make a step towards that not happening. But it didn't work. Because nobody cared to listen. Everyone was too caught up in their own thing to care. I think this ending isn't a bad idea. But it needed more to it. Several episodes dedicated to figuring out the series is close to ending, trying to stop it, sacrifices, and finally acceptance of their fate. Would it be a dark ending for a show centered around comedy and selfish people being selfish? Yes. But Gumball has shown us it can be serious when it really tries. Like with Penny's issues. The shell, her family, everything. But there's always that hint of comedy in there. A hint everything will be okay. If this series finale had more time put into it, it could have been something much more amazing. The process of forgetting the show is in place. It will take years. But some day, it will be forgotten, if an effort isn't made to remember. I think that's the message the show was trying to put into the final episode.

Let's be honest. Gumball flossing had already done it in for me.

We all know they're gonna get a movie. If TTG ans SU can get one so can TAWOG.

One thing to note is that when the final shot of the finale freezes and plays the theme, the last note of the theme doesn't occur, possibly hinting at how it isn't over yet. EDIT: one year later and we officially have an awog movie announced to be in development !

The creator didnt want this to be the finale and he said something about being in the talks for a Gumball movie, i think the image of them in the void is a clue about what the movie, the actual finale would be about. i wont discard the idea since SU got a movie after what seemed to be their final episode.

I like the episode overall, and a lot of people seem angry about the way it ended...feels like it's pretty clear that it was setting up for an actual Finale...it fit perfectly with a show known for being the most meta of them all. They were clearly referring to the series getting cancelled, even without explaining it

(a little bit late here) I thought that the Finale was perfect, let me explain. We didn't understand what Rob was doing, his motives, or what was happening. But that is where WE are wrong. This show is very Meta, it is self aware, and it plays to that often. We need to take a step back from the show, this isn't a big bad destroying the world, this isn't an explainable thing in-universe. This is a show. A show that was ending. Rob, being in touch with the Meta-ness, KNEW the show was ending. Rob did unpredictable, unexplainable, and seemingly pointless things to GET US to react this way. Rob was trying to cling on to the mystery, and get us to question things, he wanted us to be dissatisfied, he wanted us to want MORE. Rob succeeded, his plan worked, and the series LITERALLY ended on a cliffhanger. Rob foresaw the end of the show, and tried SO HARD to get us to question things, and not be satisfied, so that Rob could save Elmore, save the show. Rob was trying to get US, the fans, to save the show, but in the end... The show ended anyway. The finale wasn't bad, it wasn't stupid, it did exactly what it was trying to do.

It would seem that the metacommentary in play here was literally the fact that the show was coming to an abrupt end. The chaos depicted in the painting of the future---that very well could've been a prediction of the show coming to a cataclysmic close. The ending of a show, by that logic, is an apocalypse for the characters inside of it. And it only seems fitting that the character self-aware enough to realize his role as a peripheral character (unworthy to even exist in the shadow of the MC like the other peripheral characters) would be the one to recognize the reality of what an ending would mean.

The reverse of the opening theme song to a dark, mysterious, and sinister version of it taunts the audience because just like Rob said, "You have two choices. Live in ignorance about what's gonna happen here, or listen to what I have to say, it might just save your lives." That dialogue is what makes the ending music so bone-chilling. Knowing that the characters we've seen go through difficult challenges and character development, will perish, and the audience won't be there to help, support, or even be there for their characters. I can't handle hearing about Gumball in the past tense

Personally, I liked the episode.......for about 2/3 of it. It had a fascinating plot and I was with it, up until the ending. If the creator has a movie in the works, then I may change my mind about it, but for now, I expected more of an ending that felt earned.

I think the thing rob was warning them about was the fact the show was ending. They choose to live in ignorance. The don't know it's over. Rob didn't get to tell them.

Nobody expects the Elmore Inquisition

No joke when I first watched this, I thought this was the penultimate episode and not the finale. It probably would've been a better finale lead-up than an actual ending.

The Inquisition was a good episode. Was it a good finale for a show like Gumball? Definitely not. It definitely seemed like a type of finale for a show that got cancelled and they had little time to come up with a finale. But this show ended on its own terms. I’m just really hoping for a movie.

"Dealing with why Elmore is falling apart" I mean...Have you just not watched the show? Gumball exists in a TV reality. Within its own universe, it is a TV show. And the show was cancelled, or ended, or whatever. So its universe falls apart. Gumball being a TV reality even fits with Rob's behavior. If he's got good intention, saving Elmore, why call himself Superintendent Evil? He's bound by the rules of a TV cartoon, and TV cartoons most typically don't deal in nuance: Nemesis? Villain. Evil. It's also why nobody listens to him. He never did break the systems that keep him down.

But, what if the thing ROB was scared of... was the end of the show... The whole world of Elmore is going into the void, and they have nowhere to go to escape, because where they would have gone, has gone with them, and none of this would be shown because, the void of course, is where everything that isn't to be there anymore goes. The whole show has gone to the void, along with any resolution. (Doesn't make the Finale satisfying tho)

maybe it is about the whole show entering the void. I mean it ended, it knew that when things end things are forgotten. Even when characters are transformed into human figures, its the show showing how live actions and fully realistic art styles are more leaned towards by major companies. It think it went well with trying to be meta at the end as it was already going for it.

This episode is a part 1 that exists primarily to persuade a part 2 to be greenlit, and that is never a good idea. I've said this on Twitter: Teen Titans '03 tried to pull the same gambit with "Things Change". And look where *that* ended up. Whether it succeeds for Gumball and they get the conclusion movie they're trying to get remains to be seen. If it does work this time, the result could be phenomenal. The problem is, *that is a very big "if".*

personally, i think this buildup is great. it has all the necessary things to build up into a, say, tv movie. i can't stop watching that final scene. it's just so good. but if nothing, literally NOTHING comes from this, then this will go down as one of, if not THE most, disappointing cartoon series finale of all time. and with such a brilliant show as gumball, i wouldn't want to happen. let's just hope a movie comes out soon. maybe we'll look back at this and say, "hey, this was actually pretty good" because we got something from it. we got a payoff. and that is what we're waiting for: a good payoff.

This felt more like a creepypasta than a "finale"

I thought it was realistic A generic episode where they don't know that they are all going to essentially die so they treat Rob like just a generic villain giving it a sense of realism

PLEASE make a video on the Gumball and Rob arc. He is my favourite character, I find his backstory so unique and he is literally the reason I started watching Gumball. His character has so much about him and is so easy to sympathise with.

While a movie isn't confirmed, let's be real. The chances tawog getting a movie is probably decent. We are probably getting one of SU, Regular show, OR TTG could get a movie. Especially since a movie would be a finale.

Wait, is this REALLY the end with a character screaming in despair without knowing what really happened to the story? They should launch a hidden episode breaking the fourth wall, but hopefully they will not let a good drawing have such a strange end as this

I think it was great. The picture in “the future” shows the watterson family running from the void Meanwhile, in this episode, rob mentions that he was trying to help them by turning them “normal” This was RIGHT The show was getting canceled and he was the only one that knew, so he tried to help everyone by making them go into another show Yet the citizens of elmore were too ignorant to care, and they left him The void came, the show ended The painting? That is what happens after what we see in the finale Everything Just Stops.

I'd found this to be the most Disappointing series finale ever next to Star vs the Forces of evil sometimes I'd wish that Gumball was picked up for another season with high steaks and explanations

This episode was too exposition heavy and kept explaing things we know already about the show.

Kk... no way in common sense would the director reveal interest in a movie, and then have the show end like this and NOT HAVE A MOVIE

I kinda dropped Cartoon Network after they started focusing more on TTG, occasionally coming back for Steven Universe. But I will admit that this finale had a good idea. But in the end, it didn't deliver on it. We can hope that a movie is planned or some kind of special otherwise.... this was a letdown.

The last episode wouldn't start with 'The' so it could symbolize the difference it has from other episodes like "Christmas" and "Halloween" Or it would be called "The Amazing World Of Gumball"

Most of the viewers of TAWOG have grown up with the show, and I’m one of them. Seeing the show end at such an odd and horrible note just makes me think about the past and how amazing TAWOG was before it’s later seasons. The world of Cartoon Network will never be the same but I thank them for making up the best parts of my childhood.

The meta part was that rob was trying to warn them that the show was ending and that they needed to change themselves to become more interesting and they rejected it because they didnt want to change who they were and this was a satisfying ending because that’s exactly how the characters would have reacted if they heard the show was ending

Rob was right, if the show really is over and it’s not coming back in any way then they are dead, basically. Rob was trying to give the show a new look and therefore rebooting it, but he was stoped and the void comes to destroy them once and for all. Also the picture banana painted is what happens after rob falls into the void.

With hindsight of them announcing a gumball movie, this ending is great.

Also i was waiting for this video by you for a LONG time and now that its here, and I’m only half way through the video, this is easily the best video on your channel for me. The way you broke down the arc in an explanation for a deeper meaning is what your videos different (and may I say better) then other cartoon reviewers.

I feel like the episode shouldn't have got as much hate as it did The episode is about how Rob has found out that Elmore shall soon cease to exist, so he tries to get all the characters to under go transformation so they can escape the collapse of Elmore, but when they find out its him they think he's try in to destroy Elmore, so they don't let him explain why he tried to transform them, so they go home, leaving Rob in the school, and then Elmore collapses and as Rob falls into the void, it freezes on the one frame, that was shown in one of Banana Babara's pictures while she says, "There is no future.", that one frame is the frame we are left on, the frame that ties into the movie, which most people think will be about the people in Elmore trying to escape the void, and some people think part of the movie will be in live action There you go My thoughts on the episode

Notice how Regular Show ended in 2017, Adventure Time ended in 2018, and Gumball is possibly ending in 2019. It’s all a pattern.

So it's not a season finale. Course banana Barbra painted the actual future of what is going to happen from the episode where gumball tries to prove its not a prophecy. Has anyone forgot about it? Makes it weird why they call that episode a final episode.

Hear me out. What if the thing that was going to happen to Elmore was just, ending. After all, this was the “last episode”. And the fact that these characters are super self aware, I wouldn’t be surprised if they knew the show they were in was ending. But I have to agree with you, this show definitely deserves a better finale.

Theory: How the episode ends is supposed to represent the show ending. He was trying to save the cast by making them resemble the human race, so they could blend in. Gumball, Zack, whatever you want to call him, Unwitting doomed him, his family, all of Elmore, because Rob was supposed to be the bad guy.

Wait. That was the finale? As in no more new episodes after that?! I'm so disappointed. So much build up, all that build up! You didn't even mention The Vegging where they got that warning from the future. I guess we're all just supposed to assume that their whole world ends up in the void.

If the series is cancelled, why are they still showing it on Cartoon Network?

Really? I loved this finale. Yes, there's still the question of how transformation could help the people of Elmore escape, and why Rob only did this in the school instead of the entire town, but I liked the idea of their entire world ending *because* the show is ending too. And from a technical standpoint, the live-action was blended really well with the animation.

this finale makes a lot of sense. if you look at the episode "the future" you can see banana Barbara's last painting is of Rob going in the void. at the end of the finale, Rob goes into the void. and when they found out Rob was the superintendent, he was trying to warn them of what's to come, A CANCEL. they would go into the void because they were going to be canceled and forgotten. so Rob was trying to make them live action for a new show where they are all live action. ALL ROB WAS TRYING TO DO WAS SAVE THEM ALL. but they didn't listen. that was/is they're last episode. and Rob was the good guy the whole time. Gumball was trying to stop rob's plan of saving them.

As a set up to a finale? This episode was pretty fantastic. As a Finale itself? It falls pretty far behind. There's a good way, and a bad way to end something on an open note. Some shows are praised for the mysterious questions left unanswered by their endings, even in the cases of cancelled series, like Cowboy Bebop, which left a very inconclusive ending that has left fans talking about it for years afterwards. But this didn't do that correctly. As Meta-knowledge, we all KNOW what the apocalypse represents, the meta-physical end of their show. But it's never made aware to any of the other characters. We don't even get to SEE what happens to the universe, or the characters themselves, all we see is it's "beginning", but not it's "end", leaving a rather sour taste in the mouth, like a book that had it's last few pages ripped out, providing and inconclusive, unfinished feeling end. Not only that, but it implies a rather tragic ending to the show, which, while not inherently a bad thing, seems unfitting, Gumball never really WAS a tragic, or even a really plot based show, it was mostly just comedy with loose continuity and great meta commentary and comedy on issues in real life, making it a show both adults and children could enjoy. It's ending should have been representative of this fact, using it's meta knowledge, making use of it's characters to their fullest, and "changing" their fate, story wise. It's ending almost reminds me of Star Vs The Forces of Evil's ending, which, slight spoilers for those who haven't seen but plan to, it ends on a rather abrupt note, one that, possibly may have even been worse off than TAWOG'S as it sets the show up as if it were having a whole nother season, but ultimately, THAT was it's ending. I truly hope the creator gets the movie, the series deserves it after all this time. But building your finale to RELY on getting a movie you aren't confirmed on, is a bad idea. A finale may be IMPROVED upon by a movie, such as Madoka Magica's was, but ultimately, a finale should close the book, not leave it open indefinitely, banking on an ending that may never come. But I think perhaps, it may be too early to come to a full conclusion. we may after all be surprised to find this is actually the SECOND to last episode, or that they truly do get the movie. Only time will tell.

This is not open ended I see it as the show being “cancelled” rob falls into the same static he kicked Gumball into but now it’s effecting the whole show

I just thought it meant the series was canceled or the story ended, and that would mean they would all go to the void, making the void not just a place for mistakes but for the end of stories as well. This would leave Rob wanting to avoid this by basically transforming the show’s inhabitants to make something different enough to leave interest for a new story and thus save Elmore or keep it alive at least a little longer.

idk why i kinda love the ending when rob falls down. Its beautifull yet scary, in my opinion ofcourse. But the only thing thats very frustating is the lack of an answer or an episode followinh to this

i think that at the end the real reason why the intro is 1 note short because it consists of 6 notes but since they didn't finish the last note is a hint that there is more to come which is the movie

I thought it was good. I wanna know what happens next and if Rob comes back at all. The thing I hated was when they announced new episodes and they were just lazy one scene/clip show episodes.
