Ok so at this point, The Batmobile is one of the most famous and iconic cars in Hollywood History. First debuting in detective comics as a red roadster, the car has transformed over the decades to become as stylisied as the Batman behind the wheel driving it. For every new iteration of the Dark Knight that we get we also get a new car to fit and these machines very much echo the personality and attributes of whoever is in the cowl.
Just in the same way that James Bond will forever be tied to his range of Aston Martins, Batman is very much tied to the car and each one of them is symbolic on a number of levels.
Anton Fursts Batmobile perfectly fit Michael Keatons stylised gothic take, Nolan's Tumbler echoed the groundness and practicality of Bales Batman and Robert Pattinsons is also a machine that mirrors the way that he is.
Getting the tone of a movie right very much depends on the choices that are applied to the machine and it can very much make or break every incarnation of the caped crusader.
The Batman brilliantly brings his ride to life and throughout this video we're gonna be discussing why we think it's one of the best car chase scenes ever put to film.
If you enjoy the video then we'd massively appreciate the thumbs up and also don't forget to subscribe for breakdowns like this every day.
With that out the way, welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show I'm your host Paul, now let's get into why we think, chicks dig the car.
Ok so if you followed us during the run up to the release of The Batman then you'll know that we made several videos on the new Batmobile. In 2020 it was stated that the new ride would be somewhat of a muscle car that Bruce had built up in the same DIY manner that he crafted his armour.
Through the film we even get several hints towards this and when he enters the batmobile you can catch it under a tarp. There's then shots of chains, the engine and througout the film Reeves slowly plants it in our mind that it's coming.
However, what we didn't expect to see was just how terrifying it was and in many ways it perfectly mirrors Batman.
At the beginning of the movie when we're introduced to the dark knight we hear a monologue in which he talks about how he waits in the shadows for his prey. Upon emmerging at the train station he strikes a terrifying figure and the idea of Batman coming out of this darkness is too echoed in the introduction of the car.
After a shootout with the Penguin we watch as Cobblepot he's the menacing scream of the cars engine from down a dark alleyway.

When folks talk about this scene, they usually talk about the deep rumble of the engine firing up. What got me was the high screech it made. That of a jet engine. That to me sounded alive. Like a beast screaming to be let loose so it can eat. It’s the simplest but scariest batmobile ever.

I absolutely love the batmobile scenes in Nolan’s movies but I think this one tops them. The cinematography, the packed highway, rain, and that awesome finale. I was on the edge of my seat. That said, I agree it’s out of character for Batman to cause so many casualties (obviously lots like you pointed out, but then, to a far lesser degree of course, I think some of the police car collisions in Batman Begins had a high likelihood of being fatal.) In the context of the movie and the character it’s very “un bat like” and I appreciate you pointing that out, but on its own I think this is easily the best Batmobile scene.

You can feel the heft in the Batmobile in that shot and how the suspension works overtime on those fat tires. With Nolan's, especially in the first movie's rooftop chase, I always thought it looked odd. Figured out that it was actually shot in slow motion because the car was a miniature. No way would a car that big be able to do that practically. Driving from one roof to the other would literally just plunge straight down, even with the jets. The jets at the back could only make the car shoot forward, and not up-and-out like the film suggests.

It was by far the worst scene. In a movie that goes to such great pains in the name of realism, dozens of people certainly died in that explosion and pile-up and it is never addressed. Not only did Batman recklessly lead to the deaths of innocents but he doesn’t address the carnage afterwards. People are burning alive behind Batman and he’s slow walking towards the camera. Completely took me out of the movie. I was enjoying it until that point.

@@tek3311 When does he slaughter "dozens of innocent people" there where was collateral damage sure, but that was because he was chasing Penguin and the latter didn't care much about others safety. Also how is that chase scene unrealistic? It feels like some people went in with this inaccurate expectation that this film's goal was to one-up the realism of TDK trilogy that when it has any action sequence that's more than just "Batman punches thugs" they think it betrayed its artistic integrity or something. It was clear from the trailers that this film had heightened and stylistic elements.

He struts slowly towards Penguin. I don’t mean physical realism. If anything, this movie is more physically realistic than the Nolan trilogy. But the fact that no one addresses the giant fireball on a packed highway is dumbfounding. It’s also illogical that Batman would be so reckless. The movie's got some problems though, like Selena's phone not being destroyed by Falcone immediately, and the Riddler being surprised that Batman hadn't solved the riddle with the map under the carpet yet, which implies that he counted on Batman having solved it already, which would have screwed up his plan. For a movie that prides itself on realism, these two scenes felt like radical departures and took me out of the movie

@@tek3311 the penguin purposefully causef the death of the civilians and batman was trying to not collide with anu vehicle, and had to jump from the ramp to not die himself and to catch up with Oz. I see that as Bats still getting used to the car. Other than him driving it to that location, he didn’t have much time to test it. It was in pieces up until that point. It was deliberate and just added to how much of a rookie he still is. Just like the wing suit scene. But even with all that, Bats is still pushing it 110%. I love this scene. New fav batmobile.

I feel like something that makes this feel as good as it does is the fact that the other examples given were of antagonists about to kill the protagonists. They're scary because we don't want the good guys to die. Batman being the protagonist means that we feel elated when, against all odds, he still manages to catch the Penguin who was powerless to stop him.

It was a really good chase. The car introduction is awesome, the chase is spectacular, the jump before he flips Penguin was awesome (and very lucky). The main problem I have with it was how much it risked all the other driver's lives, obviously killing some, just to talk to the Penguin AGAIN. He knows where he is all the time, so just let him go and catch him later. He is literally right beside him 3 more times in the movie.

Paul, I watched the video you posted a couple of months ago, expressing how excited you were about this movie. I was skeptical as I’m a die-hard Nolan fan, but I gotta tell you, after watching it 5 times and having my 6th viewing scheduled for Saturday, I just can’t get enough of this film. It was so carefully and beautifully crafted; so detailed, so thorough, so intentional. It takes its time in building the story and the characters. The fact that you feel you’re with him throughout the movie at all times makes you experience the story at another level. And those shots! Jeez. That final scene with the flare, gives me goosebumps and teary eyes every time. This scene in particular, the sound of the engine when it starts, when he’s trying to save Selina, man! The different perspectives of the cameras; the one that specially gets to me is when Oz shoots him and you can see Batman through the cracked/shot window, he definitely looks scary. Reeves and his team created a masterpiece. Long story short, you saw the potential early on. You’re a pro bro! 😜

Nobody discusses how everything surrounding this scene is frustratingly dumb, every popcultcha youtuber is "this movee is p3rf3ct" but everybody conveniently ignores all the dumb shit in it: 1 The penguin has already been established to be easy to find. 2 Yet Batman CHOOSES to go after him even after he enters the highway, instigating a chase and indirectly causing the death of all of those people, instead of letting him go and find go after him later 3 Once the penguin is caught, it's the penguin himself that gives Batman that Eureka moment of the URL Rata Alada (which is cringely dumb on its own, great detective work there genius) 4 Both Batman and Gordon let the penguin GO, right after him causing such mayhem in the highway, they just let him go. Yeah, makes sense. Dumb fucking movie, the more I think about it the more it pisses me off.

It's perfect for a young, new Batman too. Two years into his time as Batman, he wouldn't have something like the Burton version, he's not just spray painting existing Wayne products like the Tumbler in the Dark Knight films. This Batmobile is just a suped up muscle car that Bruce modified to make his new role easier, and I like that he only uses it when he absolutely needs to, doing most of his actual travelling on a motorcycle. When he busts out the Batmobile, he means business.
