This week: my favorite spy film. Written and edited by me, Julian Rhodes. All music, images, and clips are used for the purposes of commentary in conjunction with the Fair Use Agreement under U.S. Copyright Law.
I think the reason this movie resonates with people, is it feels real and it’s a man against the shadowy government story. It feels good to see a lone man outsmart dozens of trained government tech types, field agents and administrators. All this and it does it in such a believable way that sees our hero gets some bumps and bruises along the way. We all wish we were like Jason Bourne and live vicariously thru him to gain a sense of empowerment.
The bourne identity is my personal favourite action movie in general. I think most of it comes from the locations where the movie was shot, this early 2000’s snowy and foggy Europe, which I find extremely pleasant to watch, along with all the plot development and action scenes. I recommend to all of you guys who really enjoyed this movie, and the Bourne franchise as well, to read Robert Ludlum’s books, the original Bourne franchise. It’s an amazing experience, and I tell you all upfront that it’s far different from the movies. In summary, great video, and I’m subscribing the channel. :)
The character of Jason Bourne is an archetype. He’s not just a blank slate, he’s an archetypal evil character who by some circumstance has forgotten his evil ways and becomes good. Doug Quaid in Total Recall had a similar character arc.
Hey, these are really great videos. I'm sure people make suggestions for movies all the time but I feel compelled to mention a few. Vertigo, Rashomon, Playtime, November and Werkmeister Harmnonies. You're doing a great a job.
Tbh, the first movie is so good that it improves the next two movies if you watch the trilogy in one sitting. But the 2016 one is just plain bad, whatever you do! To me the cool thing about the first movie is the fact that it's so low key, and then if you want some more grand stakes you can allways watch the second one. So a win win. Just don't go past the third one 😬
billyjoelfan100 yeah North by Northwest was great as was Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much. Munich was very good not sure I would give it a 5 out of 5. I have not seen The Torn Curtain you may like The Spy Who Came in from the Cold Richard Burton does a good job with LeCarre’s first novel
It’s not just an average spy film. There are so many little details which make it different to the average spy films. He doesn’t know who he is, his girlfriend is an average woman and not a model, they drive every day cars and not expensive cars, there are no real good guys or bad guys. The action is more realistic than most spy films.
good job men, even Bourne Identity was long ago and almost forgotten, but still its a good movie ! maybe sounds strange but could you make a film-review to "last mohican" and its sound effects, its maybe theee best movie out there....and why they did not make such movies today?
Hmm. The first act is really good. I love that John Frankenheimer European, Ronin type vibe and the intrigue is built up really well. After that, roughly about the time of the big car chase, it starts to become just a decent but rather basic action/thriller movie with very little real character or relationship development. The final act in particular felt rushed and poorly fleshed out, with no real exploration into the move away from violence when he no longer has any sense of identity with all his conditioning. The throwing away of guns in the first act is almost all we get of that. Overall, I always felt it needed to be a bit longer with the middle and end, plot and relationships fleshed out a bit more. Despite them continuing on directly in the first sequel, they just immediately killed off Marie. That still just left that potentially great movie relationship totally undeveloped and abandoned. One other gripe I have with it is the style Wombosi is acted in - it just sticks out as too cartoonish for the tone of the movie.
I think the final act actually really works because of how strong the performances are and how well made the film is, good directing can save a dodgy screenplay and vice versa Also totally fine with them killing Marie off so quickly in supremacy, what would she have done anyway? Get in the way like in so many generic action movies? Agree with wombosi but hes so irrelevant that I can let that slide
Good movie, but MUCH better book. Too late for most people, since the point throughout the book is that you don't know who Bourne really is, if he's really a good guy or bad guy, since he has these skills but amnesia. Interesting in these days of people wanting better female role models that in the movie Marie is kind of ditsy, but in the book she's a PhD in economics, whom Bourne meets when she's in Europe doing a high level presentation.
ummm I'm a film buff as much as the next person, but this is definitely not an essential film along with the avengers (!?) the avengers? really? considering all the other films that you have covered I am hoping that this was just a human mistake. I mean you have black narcissus 2 videos next to the bourne identity. really man? what is next? the gremlins aside kobayashi's human nature? I don't know surprise us! And please try non-classics as well. in many cases, they have much more to offer than classics. on this final note, I shall raise my glass for your inclusion of barry lyndon; simply put, the most beautifully shot picture of all time.
Attaching the inclusion on the list as opposed to the ideas presented as to WHY it's on the list is a textbook example of a personal incredulity fallacy.
