Cruiselines need to get back to building smaller ships. Most of the smaller ships are 20+ years old and can go into some spots where the Oasis class and above can't.

Thanks for the live chat... I guess the bottom line is that cruise ships will have no choice but to port in cities that they are welcome.

Good point. Unfortunately we fear that that means a lot of great places will not be accessible while on a cruise vacation.

Not only are the new ships too big, but they are attracting unruly kids and sloppily dressed passengers. Bring back the days when cruising was a relaxing vacation where the passenger felt special and were appreciated.

Unfortunately what we consider classic cruising is a rare find lately.

I’ll never cruise on the mega ships. Don’t like the long cruise. While I loved the Royal Princess, the queues and crowds were challenging. Mind you, silly me for cruising over Xmas. We also never had to wait for dinner as we had the Reserve dining. Still was a fabulous cruise on a beautiful ship.

When we were on our last MSC cruise the lines were ridiculous at times. It is not how we want to spend our vacation time.

The Airbnb problem is a thing in many cities in the U.S. so I'm not surprised that it's becoming a problem in other places. I do think the cruise lines will have to figure out how to match ship size to ports to not overwhelm the ports.
@lisadiver5253

I also wonder if part of the problem is Airbnb wanting the piece of the "Tourist dollar" in major cities... this is making lots of cities unaffordable not just overseas! I live in Vancouver lower mainland area and it one of the highest rental markets in the country. I think many countries have to put restrictions and limits on all short terms rentals.

Good vlog. We are watching the situation in Barcelona closely as we are traveling to Europe for the first time ever in April 2025. We plan to spend 3 nights in Barcelona before we board the Sun Princess for a cruise to Rome. Hopefully things will calm down by then. 🙁

Barcelona is a beautiful city, we hope that they will continue to welcome tourists like they did us when we were there last year.

I'll go on record as saying I do love the big ships primarily because of the variety they offer. Obviously they carry more passengers and the occupancy levels really do sound intimidating, but I have been on plenty of smaller ships and felt incredibly crowded. A fully-occupied small ship, with far fewer venues and public space, can be entirely claustrophobic. Ship layout is key on any ship, regardless of size. Seems like Europe, and now Alaska, is where overtourism is an issue. Our first Mediterranean cruise opened the world to us and after having just a few precious hours in such historic cities/ports was obviously not enough. We have returned on many land trips to really take in the sights. Otherwise, when visiting the tropical locations, the ship to me really does matter because the "journey" takes precedence and thus, I'm looking for a ship that has a lot to offer. Hopefully the travel industries will work with localities to find compromises that work for all.

We definitely hope that they find a solution to this raising issue. We love cruising but don’t want to cruise somewhere where we aren’t welcomed. 🛳

I have not had the desire to go to Barcelona long before they were protesting tourists!!! Alaska should get over it. The cruise season there is part of the year!!

Emerald Princess has bigger balconies than even the Regal. I prefer the older ones and we leave on the Volendam on Saturday. Because of your vlog we know it already😍

Another big issue is local businesses do not often benefit from cruises. This comes down to very short port visits. The longer the ship is in port the more likely passengers are to spend money in local businesses. Tour companies and souvenir shops do ok, but that’s it.

We are wondering if we need to mix a land base trip with a cruise in order to see smaller places that cruise can’t go.

New Zealand is limiting cruise ships in certain ports. And Australia is increasing the port fees for cruise ships, alot of cruise lines are opting not to cruise to Australia in 2025.

This is such a shame and NZ has the strict biosecurity rules. Cunard is not homeporting Queen Elizabeth in Aus after this summer! 😢😢😢

Hello J&J! I do applaud the cruise lines for building larger ships to attract families. But i personally like smaller ships. The bigger ships help keep the kids away from the smaller, quieter ships. I believe we should reevaluate the less port intesive schedules for the megaships. Maybe that would lighten the load on smaller port communities. I honestly believe children are really not interested in port stops. Most of the time in port, it looks like the kids would rather be back on board.

Good point. As a parent who frequently cruises with our children we can attest to the ease of sea days compared to how expensive and stressful port days could be. 🛳

During the Vietnam War, I was stationed in Key West. The city was not amused by the presence of the Navy and was thinking of ending the Military presence. So, the Navy paymasters paid everyone in cash, Two Dollar Bills! When the local merchants realized how much business the Navy gave to the city, by the influx of two-dollar bills, all base closure discussions were "tabled" by the powers that were in charge at the time. On the question of mega ships, it is cheaper to construct one 6,000 passenger ship, than three 2,000 passenger ships. You'll keep seeing bigger, but not necessarily better cruise ships.

Thanks for sharing. Very interesting. Great point that it is more cost effective to build one mega ship compared to three regular size ones.

I have no interest in cruising on a mega ship... they have way too many people! Yes, they may have more activities and more restaurants but they also have more people! Smaller ships are the way to go in my opinion... that's why I love HAL. 😀

We feel very similar. We have yet to try a 6000 passenger cruise but every small ship we have cruised on we have enjoyed more than the 4500 passenger cruise that we took this past winter.

I think the Mega ships should be banned. For a big ship holding up to 5,000 - 6,000 people to come into a port where other ships are also going you can’t blame those locals affected in the various ports to say enough is enough. I can understand locals feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. The problem I think is compounded by post Covid travellers who couldn’t travel wanting to make up for time lost. Speaking of Iceland …I am just about to do an Iceland/Scotland cruise leaving from Netherlands. 10 days and counting!

These mega ships are floating destinations in themselves. The only destinations they need is their private islands. Leave the ports for smaller ships with less passengers. 🤔

That is what we are starting to see a few of them do. They are just going to their private island and then back to Florida.
