The Daytona 500, the Great American Race, is upon us. For NASCAR fans, it's their favourite time of the year. For non-NASCAR fans however, they kinda don't really get the hype? So, here's an F1 RU-vidr with a stupid accent to explain why this is worth watching ;)

I love how racing culture seems to be moving toward just being a fan of it in general and people watch multiple different series. Nothing is more fun than having a weekend where F1, Indycar, NASCAR and IMSA are all racing.

For those who are new to the sport he’s some more information that BFM didn’t have time to touch on for every team Hendrick Motorsports- BFM pretty much said everything needed to be said about them. One thing to note is that William Byron has been one of the better superspeedway drivers in recent years and that Chase Elliott, while good at superspeedways, as had nothing but bad luck in the 500 Team Penske- A villain in the eyes of some Joey Logano is a former 500 winner and is one of the favorites to potentially get his 2nd. Everyone’s 2nd favroite driver Ryan Blaney has come oh so close oh so many times but has yet to hit gold in the 500. Austin Cindric is a rookie the 2020 Xfinity series (basically formula 2) champ and almost won it in 2021 as well. Joe Gibbs Racing- owned by Hall of Fame American Football Coach Joe Gibbs, JGR has some interesting storylines. While Denny Hamlin is arguably the best modern era Daytona 500 driver Martin Truex Jr and the Villain Kyle Busch as mentioned are still looking for that elusive 500 win. Truex hasn’t won in 17 attempts and Busch 16. Christopher Bell is also a sneaky underdog Trackhouse Racing- owned by Pitbull, yes that Pitbull, Trackhouse has two lovable underdogs. Ross Chastain who fought and clawed through backmarker teams to get to where he is today and Daniel Suarez who is stil attempting to become the first Mexican NASCAR winner. Richard Childress Racing- Childress’s grandson Austin Dillon has won the 500 before and has a tendency to win on the biggest stage. And Tyler Reddick has been one of the fastest and aggressive young drivers over the past 2 years but is still looking for win number 1 Stewart-Haas Racing- Owned by the same Gene Haas that owns Haas F1 (although this team has actual speed) SHR is one to watch for. Kevin Harvick is the 2007 winner and looking to rebound from his first winless season with the team. Aric Almirola is a great superspeedway racer who is still looking for that 500 crown, and Cole Custer and Chase Briscoe are two young drivers who are still looking for their breakout year and moment RFK Racing- now co-owned by Brad Keselowski RFK hopes that their new influx of cash can lead them back to their former glory. Keselowski is a phenomenal super speedway racer who has yet to get that elusive crown (coming oh so close before getting wrecked last year). Former Xfinity champ Chris Buescher is a sneaky underdog in the 17. Spire Motorsports- Corey LaJoie has always shown solid speed at Daytona. And perennial underdog Landon Cassill is a fan’s lovable underdog in the 77 Rick Ware Racing- David Ragan while basically retired has been running only the 500 for a few years, he’s a former Daytona (but not 500) winner who almost won with the car to beat in 2011. Team Owner’s son Cody Ware is a bit of a career backmarker but with new help from SHR both drivers hope the team can compete. Kaulig Racing- defending Xfinity Champ Daniel Hemric took years of great performances but coming up short to get his first NASCAR top 3 series win last year. He now hopes to add the 500 to that short win list, and Justin Haley who has been dominant at superspeedways in lower series hopes that can transfer over to the big leagues. Wood Brothers Racing- the oldest team in NASCAR the Wood Bros are looking to rookie Harrison Burton to win the 500 in his 2nd career start. The last time a Wood Brothers driver made his 2nd career start in the 500… was when cinderalla story Trevor Bayne won in 2011. 23XI Racing- Owned by THAT Michael Jordan this 2nd year team has two drivers who could easily make history. Former Villain turned hero who’s brother became the Villain (that’s a lot to read) Kurt Busch has won it before in 2017 and Bubba (Darrell) Wallace is looking to become the first African American Daytona 500 winner. Front Row Motorsports- The defending winner Michael McDowell looks to do it again and put himself in the history books. And rookie Todd Gilliland in his debut race hopes to do what his teammate did last year JTG Daughtery Racing- another team owned by a former NBA Player (Brad Daughtery) Ricky Stenhouse Jr hopes to get them their first 500 win. A phenomenal superspeedway Stenhouse is looking for his first 500 crown. Live Fast Motorsports- Owned and driven by quiet underdog BJ McLeod he hopes to pull of a monumental upset (you can never miss their cars as their paint schemes are always the best) A few part time teams will be filling up the field hoping to win as well Team Hezeberg- former F1 champ Jacques Villeneuve will be running for his first Daytona 500. The former champ and country music artist showed some speed in qualifying. NY Racing Team- Greg Biffle is a long time NASCAR Veteran who came oh so close a few times back in his day and is now looking to finally get over the hump. The Money Team- Owned by Floyd Money Mayweather TMT will look to underdog Kaz Grala to give the rest of the field a knock out blow. Bears Motorsports- The Villain of the Xfinity series Noah Gragson will be attempting to give this tiny team with only a few employees an incredible Daytona win

Agreed! Every type of motor racing has its place, and slagging off one type that you know bugger all about is just plainly ignorant. Not watching a formula because it doesn't appeal to you, for whatever reason, is valid, but unless you know - _really_ know - about it (i.e. having watched it for a few years, because one year is never properly descriptive of how it works on average, for want of a better phrase), you have no right to talk it down - at best - and you have absolutely no right to trash talk it. All you're entitled to say is that it doesn't appeal to you and you should leave it at that. I used to think, for various reasons, that I wouldn't enjoy Indycar, particularly the oval races, even though at the time I was into Champcar. Then after the merger, and because it was actually easily available for me to watch for a few years, I gave it a crack and learned to appreciate the technicalities involved (unfortunately it's now only on a sports channel that I can't afford, so... 🤷🏻‍♀️). Josh's description of NASCAR being a chess game is also a good one for Indy racing on ovals. Heck, it should be a good description of all racing! More brains than brawn, but still with plenty of balls 😉

That's the stereotype, and it was unfair to the drivers and teams for a long time....still is. But "flat out and turn left" is basically true, now. The cars are so slow and so laden with downforce that tire wear doesn't play much of a factor anymore, and while intense focus is needed to not wreck in a pack race....the same can be said of any other race, and a road or intermediate oval race doesn't carry the same reputation for screwing over drivers who didn't deserve to be taken out of contention. In this year's event alone, Toyota lost basically 2/3 of its entries because of wrecks that were uniformly not their fault. Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, and Martin Truex Jr. all received massive damage in one crash or another, and Hamlin - a three-time former winner and the defending champion going into this year's race - DNFed out of the 500 for the first time in his entire career. I'd be lying if I said there was zero skill involved - teamwork is CRUCIAL to survival. However, that's the thing - it's survival, and not in the usual sense when it comes to endurance racing.
@sleepdeep305
@sleepdeep305 2 года назад
Dude it's hell in a hand basket for sure. NASCAR drivers sure as hell aren't pampered in those machines, and enduring crushing g forces going flat out for hours at a time isn't easy for anyone. Nearly five hours of constant battling to finish the Coke 600 at Charlotte. Even endurance racers get breaks and straightaways every once in awhile.

Holy shit, those collabs were unexpected and amazing. Wasn't expecting that and thoroughly surprised! Fun act. Daytona hasn't always been the season opener. It used to be Riverside, California in the 80s (which also closed out the season too some years), and.... I Dale had awful luck at Daytona. Rusty had as bad luck, if not worse luck. See his 1993 season or the poster child example why. Datona: Flips spectacularly (the Rusty Wallace 30 feet in the air comment, gotta love Ken Squuier) and then Talladega...flipped yet again at the line. Also 1993 had Dale Jarrett holding of Dale Earnhardt. I mean, This year feels different. The past ew years I've not been that excited for the 500, but this year it just feels like it's wide open with a new car, new rules, new teams/drivers (I'm hoping Caz Grala does well and I want Jacques reaking Villneuve o win. tThat's my dark horse pick..._)

I eat there every year when I’m in Daytona. I also feel like a lot of fans from outside the US don’t give NASCAR a fair shot. Yes, it lives up to its stereotype at times, but it’s so different from other forms of racing and that’s what makes it magical and enjoyable. The variety of tracks and long season makes it unparalleled to other forms of racing.

I don't know how many F1 fans know it, but even F1 God Jimmy Clark even tried NASCAR. He ran a race at Rockingham I believe in 1967 and expressed interest in racing more. Unfortunately, he was killed a few months after. I believe had he not been killed, we would have eventually seen him in the Daytona 500, probably in the early 70's after winding down his F1 career. He had a connection with the Wood Brothers, who pitted his car when he won at Indy in 1965, and, of course, was closely tied to Ford. I could easily imagine him running a Wood Brothers car, maybe as a teammate of AJ Foyt, at Daytona around 1971 or 1972.

Absolutely love this video and I’ve always said going to Daytona Daytona is the motorsport holy pilgrimage as there’s so many races that go on there from the Rolex 24, flat track, NASCAR Races, Supercross ( where you wait and see Eli Tomac win it for what feels like his 80th time) and the sport bike racing. Add all that and it’s a track that any person can find something to enjoy. As for the 500 it’s NASCARS version of Monaco but with actual passing on track. Even if you never heard of NASCAR you’ve heard of the Daytona 500 just like if you never heard of Indycar you’ve heard of the Indy 500. To all my formula 1 fans, as an American I can tell you there’s not much more exciting than watching a nascar cup series race where leaders come and go, pit strategy is huge, tempers flare, we still cuss each other out and it usually gets on tv before the commentators apologize, races aren’t won on lap 1 but they sure are lost. That’s why nascar. They’re bricks going 200 miles an hour inches away from others trying to do the same thing. Plus with the new car essentially being a V8 supercar without the wing and a growing emphasis on road racing, there’s something for everyone. It’s touring car racing at 200 miles an hour with that southern “I don’t give a damn” charm.

Hello! A fellow Indonesian motor racing fan here. I had the opportunity to live in the US for college for 4.5 years. During my time, I managed to join my campus' Formula SAE team and befriended people who have an interest in both American and international motorsports, especially NASCAR, F1, Indy, sportscar racing (WEC/ALMS/IMSA), and even local dirt ovals and they love them almost equally. Prior to joining, I was "that" person with some superiority complex on how F1 trumps all (no reference to the 45th POTUS). I didn't have the chance to see a Cup series race but during the summer of 2019, I managed to see an Indycar race and a NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway, in which I managed to see Simon Pagenaud using the porta-potty (I met him up close at the SEMA exhibition later in the same year) in the former and experiencing a victory lane celebration at the latter (current Stewart Haas driver Chase Briscoe was the winner), not to mention some post-race verbal altercation between two teams and a club alumni's country music performance at the front stretch. I spent the rest of the year gaining an appreciation for other motorsports. Not only NASCAR and Indycar, but I also discovered a newfound interest in IMSA and sportscar racing in general. In addition, the club alums decided to start a sim racing league as a form to get in touch with each other. I also tried to catch up with the races on TV, but whenever there's a race on-air I'd usually work on my homework or study my quizzes in the afternoon, or simply hang out with my friends to work on club-related stuff. Usually, I turn the TV on while I was doing my college chores so I could have some company on Sunday afternoon. In the same summer, I paid a visit to Charlotte, NC - where most NASCAR teams are headquartered and I experienced the feeling of riding up Charlotte Motor Speedway's banking in a tour van. I graduated from college at the end of 2019 and planned on flying to Daytona to meet up with a fellow Indonesian (non-FSAE) alum and watch that year's Rolex 24 with him, but I, somehow got an interview lined up therefore I stayed back and watched the action from TV. Then, 2020 decided to fall apart and with my options disappearing, I decided to fly back to my family back home. The sight that sticks out on my memory whilst flying was the sight of Road America. I was fanboying a little bit, but in the end, I was a tad sad because that was my last sight of the United States for now - a track I almost religiously drive in sim racing all the way from my freshman year - as a student blowing some steam off playing Assetto Corsa on his laptop on a cold January semester. Seeing your comment made me a bit nostalgic over my time there. I miss my friends over there and I am looking forward to an opportunity to see them again - and experience more motorsports to make up. Cheers.
