Why the DOD Rubberneck is the best analog delay in the galaxy!!!

As a delay junkie i had a lot of them on my board in the last decades. All the classic and some special/unknown ones. They all vanished from my board. The rubberneck still blows my mind and i am convinced that it will become a classic one like the deluxe memory man. In the end it is only my preference and my ears.😉

See. Lol Ive been saying that for years!!! Now two years later EAE came out with sending v2, and everyone hollering bout how great it is……im like bro…..its just a rubberneck with some extra amenities like a bunch of save presets, and midi, and a couple cool things, but they do the same thing with the effects loop, they do a swell when you hold down a switch (which is similar to right footswitch on rubberneck) etc. and its $650!!!! No way am i jumping on that bandwagon, the rubberneck is better, has longer delay time, and has the delay oscillation with one footswitch and the rubberneck with the other. Still, like 8 years after it came out, the rubberneck is the one analog to rule them all. I honestly believe the rubberneck is the most important analog delay to come out since the original deluxe memory man in the 70’s.

I’ve had mine for about 2 years and it has only left my board once and replaced with the Catalinbread Echorec. It’s since made it back on board. I need a back up one in case this one fails.

I have one and love it! However, I've found you have to be careful with the repeats knob. Too much, and (for me, anyway) it starts a really low feedback loop that overtakes everything. Not sure what's up about that! But using it as a simpler chorusy delay works great for me!
@HelpingHandAlias

Every setting has an influence on another. Exspecially the gain, output and repeat knob. This is what some people what call an issue, but to me it feels alive. Thx for posting your thoughts.

Seems like one of the best analog delay on the market today. I would immediately buy one if there were some controls over knobs with an expression pedal input.

This is what video pedal reviews should be like! No words - no ceremonies! Really like this style! Have this pedal as well. My favourite delay so far. Yes there are pedals like strymon and other high price monsters but my philosophy was to avoid mainsream things and to find smth special. It is really special. Love it for Dub and Reggae a lot! Especially for studio work!

Highly recommend getting the fs3 footswitch. It helps to prevent turning off the delay when using the rubberneck effect. Also, the second button turns off the chorus effect if you don’t want it. In the loop I use an old boss dd2 to emulate tape-like repeating head patterns and a volume pedal to control the level when I do not need as much level. Very useful.

Did you have to do anything to set up the foot switch? I have one but all it seems to do is the ramp function rather than chorus on/off etc. Perhaps I have the wrong cable? Thanks

@standingbadger 10 месяцев назад
Hi. This does happen to me too occasionally. Disconnect the pedal from your mains/pedalboard and take the cable out of both the FS3 footswitch and the pedal. Reconnect the cable and power up the pedal. Check you're using a TRS cable also.@@BillHaleyInTheComments

Agreed. Best analog delay ever. I mostly use mine set to 1.5 seconds. Love it. Definitely has a tape quality to it.

Great demo. Is it possible to create an infinite layer without volume increasing with the regen knob pressed?
@HelpingHandAlias
@HelpingHandAlias 3 года назад
Hey Marco. I am not absolutely sure about this. But i am sure that it doesn't behave like a digital infinite layer sound. I think it's harder to get that sweetspot, that you aim for.

@jorgepeterbarton

Its great and my choice to use but still might want to head for a DMM for brighter tones. The tone control is more like bass-cut and i think rubberneck feels like tape emulation. Quick delay times dont do a DMM chorus, the tap divisions reset at slightly nudging time, and the bypass switch 'rubbernecks' when you want to bypass, fx loop nonessential compared to a wet/dry blend. On the whole really interesting sounds though. Wish it could have some brightness on control though for some parts.
@HelpingHandAlias
@HelpingHandAlias 2 года назад
The dmm is much darker sounding than the rubberneck.
@jorgepeterbarton
@jorgepeterbarton 2 года назад
@@HelpingHandAlias i found the opposite. Or at least it preserves the guitar's attack. In the dod all that is gone, its more like the echo is with your tone control rolled off fully, whilst the dmm is like it were on full--but on dmm it drops off from bright to dark as it decays quite quickly
@HelpingHandAlias
@HelpingHandAlias 2 года назад
@@jorgepeterbarton Mmh. That's strange. As you can see in my video the tone knob has a deep impact on the brightness. Mine doesn't sound dull at all. Maybe try my favourite setting: Tone on 3, gain on 9, rate&depth on 8.30 o'clock. Level and Decay just a little underneath 12 o'clock.
@theslaves

I own several delays (about ten), but this one is my absolute favorite, it just sounds so musical and warm, but when you hookup a Boss BF-3 Flanger to the FX loop together with a reverb and a digital delay, you’ll be in orbit of Saturn.
@HelpingHandAlias
@HelpingHandAlias 2 года назад
Yeah, the rubberneck is well engineered. A lot of options and to me it just sounds alive and dirty. What's your go to setting on the rubberneck?
@theslaves
@theslaves 2 года назад
Tone 3 o’clock, gain at 9, depth 8, rate 10, tap ratio on dotted 8ths, time and repeats depend on the tap tempo.

Yesterday i had put a Old Blood Noise Endeavors Dark Star in the fx loop, that sounded just awesome.

mine had VERY noisy repeats. is this one different?
@HelpingHandAlias
@HelpingHandAlias 2 года назад
Depends on the time setting, the tone control and amp. On my solid state amp i hear more white noise. Dialing up the tone knob to a high setting there is even more noise. Choosing long repeats also produces more white noise. I love it. Sounds and feels very organic to me.
@albertplaysguitar
@albertplaysguitar 2 года назад
@@HelpingHandAlias I was gonna ask the same thing as I was checking out your settings. In the gear page, the dod guys were saying they didn't think the noise floor was any higher than other analog delay. But idk about that. I really do wish the repeats didn't have so much white noise but I agree it adds character.
@HelpingHandAlias
@HelpingHandAlias 2 года назад
@@albertplaysguitar Yeah, maybe it is that the other analog delays, like the analog man sound so much darker..
@albertplaysguitar
@albertplaysguitar 2 года назад
@@HelpingHandAlias yeah, probably! I've tried sticking an eq pedal in the loop but it kills the delay tone when you lower the highs. The white noise is only partially removed. It's all good, worth it for the rubbernecking effect. Works even better with the external footswitch.
