I have deep respect for you because you are the only one who says that the suction power is on Boost Mode only. Which is bad for the battery and is not the setting one would use it on when doing normal day to day cleaning. I throughly enjoyed your video.
Facts. However with experience using these machines, u don't need to use max suction for general daily cleaning. The low suction is perfect and is powerful enough. Not to mention, ever since the v10, max suction will rev up to a specific point when on carpet. Then when u use the fluffy head or any suction attachment, it will rev up to its maximum rated suction level because if it uses its full power, it will be too powerful to move in carpet. So really the power of the machine is for bragging rights and won't be utilized on carpets. But like I said in the beginning, low suction is perfect for general daily cleaning or medium/auto suction
I’ve had a v15 for nearly 3 years. Using it on ECO with the gates on the floorhead closed vs auto mode has nearly no difference in carpet performance. I pick up no more fine dirt and debris when using either mode. Boost mode is something I’ve probably used half a dozen times in the years I’ve had mine. It shows how well engineered the floorhead design is and efficiency of the vacuum that it doesn’t rely on absolute raw suction. I’m incredibly happy with mine.
Excellent review as explaining the pro’s and con’s of each unit. I have my original yellow ball Dyson from the year 2005 and it’s still running like a beast. I broke a piece on the neck of the upright but it still turns on and off. With a few zip ties to hold it in place I decided today was the day to upgrade. Just purchased the Dyson Gen5outsize Absolute and came to RU-vid for more reviews. Should arrive Saturday and looking forward to seeing it in action. I know many people are turned off with the price but having a vacuum for almost 20 years and still working says a lot about the brand of Dyson. If you can afford it, Dyson is the route to go.
7:55. NO NO NO NO NO. mAh IS A VERY MISLEADING BATTERY CAPACITY METRIC! The battery may seem bigger on the Gen 5 in terms of capacity, but it isn’t. In fact you didn’t even notice that it has a smaller mAh rating because of the different voltages. You also didn’t notice the voltage differences which is why there is no backwards compatibility with powered tools. It uses 10 smaller 18650 cells instead of the the 7 larger 2170 cells found on the V15. The Gen 5 actually uses a slightly smaller 90Wh compared to the 91Wh on the V15. This shows how much power efficiency Dyson engineers are able to achieve. You should use Watt Hours (Wh) as it takes into account different voltages and cell configurations. Excellent work! I’ve been second guessing my v12 slim and thanks to your video I can stop stressing about returning it in time. I like that it has on on button, I would never ever buy a trigger one. I’ve had multiple hand surgeries, my hands are weak and extremely painful but I can use this okay. I don’t like how small the bin is but to have it lightweight I will empty it more. I have long hair and it’s great that it doesn’t get wrapped up around the beater bar however it’s a pain in the but to empty the bin because the hair is so wrapped up in there. I have to use a chopstick to get the hair unwound and out. Otherwise I’m pretty happy with it. I’ve watched a ton of videos and I found your to be the most helpful. Thank you!
Thanks for the review. It is great video. I have a question for you. Does Gen5 and v12 work with the same suction power in eco mode? So one is 262 air watts and the other is 150 air watts. Is this difference only felt in boost mode?
Great video. I was totally sold on the V15 except for the trigger. The button is a game changer for anyone with nerve or arthritis issues. Not something everyone needs to consider, but the trigger is a no go for a lot of folx with those issues and the trigger adapter is aggravating at best. Great info in this video!
I can`t figure out why Dyson doesn`t put a trigger lock on their vacuums like virtually every other power tool on the market. That would end the complaints and controvery of trigger versus switch.
Because the trigger button takes no effort to depress. It’s not like a heavy leaver. The benefit of it is you can stop and start the vacuum rather than keeping it running when you don’t have to, going between rooms. Those few seconds or minutes add up. A trigger lock would be a good medium between those who like the trigger and those who’d rather not to have to press it.
As nice as the trigger switch is to use, they have had issues with them “failing”, causing the machine to stop working. Maybe Dyson got away from the trigger switch due to these problems.
@@StKnightis64 it’s actually kind of sad when you think about it. I have numerous tools that all have triggers with locking mechanisms on them and they work flawlessly. A company who does 2 million dollars worth of R&D each year should be able to come up with a simple trigger lock.
Dumb design that blows the exhaust air up by the operator. Should come out the bottom by the floor so the operator does not have it blowing on them and drying their eyes as my wife experienced. Dyson Should go back to the drawing board and come up with a decent design.
Hi! Cordless Stick vac for ultra high pile carpets? Dyson V15 or Gen5 based on suction power as long as pile is not too tall. Not most cost effective though.
Which one would you recommend for a hard floor house with a pet, I have a rabbit who likes to free roam and loses a lot of hair during shedding season and the hay is getting everywhere... I was looking at the V11 or V15.
I use mostly the fluffy head, I switch to the other head for area rugs. If I want to just do a quick sweep, I use the other main head so I can quickly get the rugs at the same time.
Gen5 is not worth it, go with v12 slim. I think gen5 including the smaller wand inside the larger wand is not a good design. It adds weight and you dont always use the smaller wand in most cases but you carry the weight all the time
Hi, I have a 3 bedroom house, would the V12 be big enough? I like that it’s light with a push button as I have arthritis in my hands. But I’m worried I will have to empty the bin a few times when I vacuum. I don’t know if the gen5 would be too heavy
Thanks for this honest review! We had the opportunity to test the Gen5Detect in local Market near us, ITs really cool and works well, but I totally agree with you its way overpriced! Dyson makes the best cyclonic separators regarding filtration performance. Nevertheless the price is too high. Also they should really improve their build quality regarding plastics and connection clearances etc. Regarding overall build quality I would say Vorwerk is way ahaed. Maybe a self emptying station is a must have for this high price! I think you should not have to clean your vacuum if spending more than 900€
Great review. I'm debating between the Gen5 and the V12 Slim. You mentioned that attachments for the Gen5 are not backwards compatible. Does this mean that the various attachments that are out, such as the fine dusting brush, will not fit the Gen5?

i have some points as well: - the point of baöance is off -too much play on the wand, also the combo is not new( i hink in honkong dyson they sell a v15 with smaller bin capacity) -No future proof, with the introduction of the new submarine attachment we can guess that firmeare can not be updatet by the user. a usb c port would be nice. agreeing with all youre points as well
My wife and I really enjoy the V12 but the cannister is incredibly small. We have a 3000 square-foot house with two pets and I calculate that I would have to empty the cannister two or three times every time I vacuum the house. With the GEN5 I estimate that I would only need to empty it once every time I vacuum the house. In the end, it was a dealbreaker.
I was quite happy with even my V6 until recently. Just switched to Gen5 and I recommend it for people with severe allergies (ours is mites). The powerful suction is really helping us and I use the boost mode on mattresses, sofas etc.
So V12 detect slim absolute isn’t good for people with allergies (for example me and my father)? Because, I’ve a robot vacuum cleaner (Dreame L20 ultra) and it’s very good, but I want to buy one Dyson for places where robot can’t go, or for when I want to clean more efficiently. i am racking my brain trying to choose a Dyson stick vacuum...narrowed it down to Gen5 outsize 1399 / Gen5 1199 / V15 detect 999 thats in canadian funds........i notice online there are less attachments available to the Gen5 line compared to the V15....the cleaning kit is wanted but only the V15 can get it between the 3 vacuums i am pondering.....we are 58 years old with aging joints...lol..plus we have a dog....wanna use it for house and car...mostly hardwood floors except one room plus there are various area rugs.....the 2 floors are a total of about 2500 sq ft....at the end of the day i would also like an extra battery...honestly which would you recommend ?....we also thought about the V12 but the storage bin seems pretty small plus we would like more power or do we need it ?....thx for your reviews....cheers from Canada
Hi! I would recommend the Dyson V15 detect because it's lighter than the Gen 5 and replacement parts will be cheaper. With a dog, you will be using the two floor attachments and the crevice/power brush hand attachments the most. I have seen the V15 heavily on sale ($550-$600 at Costco recently) and even with the gen5, I doubt you would notice any difference in performance. I would recommend getting a small clip that can hold down the trigger on Amazon. That will make vacuuming a 2500 Sq ft house much easier. Hope that helps and thanks for watching! :)
For 700, the gen5 is a better value now. If you house is messy or lots of carpet, the gen5 at 700 will be a better value than the v12 slim at 600. But it's heavier and you will feel the difference every time if you wanted a lighter vac.
I am waiting for the new Dyson to come to my country, it'll be the first one for me, i want this one because i have been watching reviews and i found out that i would love it without the trigger, so that is the main reason why i am getting this one.

There was a clearance of the V15 Detect Complete here from the local channel. Every retailer was cleaned out once the sale hit the bargain sites. They only have the V15 Absolute available now. Every couple of weeks there seems to be some kind of discounting from the RRP. The Gen5 Complete is $1549 AUD, Absolute $1499 AUD , both overpriced. The V15 Detect is $999 AUD (on sale from $1499) and the only variant currently.@@TheFrenchGlow
Hi! That could cause the unit to fail. I have a 78 oz high pile and high pile shag rug. No issues yet but if I leave the Gen5 on the shag the wrong way, it does pull up the shag.
@@TheFrenchGlow If I open the gates all the way it works on auto, but can't use boost. I can't close the gates even on eco. Middle on eco works. Its so powerful on my rug.
i returned v12 and got the gen5. V12 on auto has horrible battery life, 78 square meter house and when you use the fluffy optic head, there is no way you be done in less than 30 minutes when you notice every dirt.

I started appreciating the dyson particle counting, coz I was detected to be highly sensitive to dust mite that's cause severe adoptic dermatitis problem to me. So it does help me understand is my effort of cleaning regularly work well for me or not... *provided the particle counting is accurate...
It’s almost end of Feb on Sunday. I bought it on a whim from qvc for not too bad a price. They take out about $100 a month out of my checking account. It’s heavy. I’m 75 years old with arthritis and holding down the button is hard. But on the other hand good exercise. Thanks for your help. I need help in knowing what pieces to use where!
Outside of the power adapter (larger battery with different rating requires a stronger charger) it is easy enough to make the Gen5 backwards compatible. They were fairly lazy in their design to prevent it by simply putting a plastic divide between the power connections. If you cut away approximately ¼" of this divide then the other models become compatible. The transfer of power and total use of any accessories, including an additional full length wand which doubles its overall length, for high or long difficult to reach places are fully operational.
@lorettasimmons8387 I bought the Gen5 last week, $997 Australian directly from Dyson online with a bonus package including the floor stand/doc. Absolutely fantastic, every accessory stories on the stand.
now dyson gen5 came with 280 air watt no more 262, alsothere are a lot of thest on youtube that show you the suction power in v15 is strongere in every mode eco normal boost than the v11 like every generation and in gen5 is stronger than v15 in every mode you use it not only in boost mode!
Thanks for your comment. And I agree that every generation except v12, the Dyson's have gotten more powerful but there is a point where more power isn't enough. The gen5 is a great cordless vacuum but is it worth almost $1000 when the V15 is about 25-30% lower in price. I have both and for me, the V15 and Gen5 are nearly identical in real world use.

I'm in Melbourne Australia, and trying to decide which Dyson stick vacuum to get. I like the V12slimdetect but right now it's retailling at AUD1349 and the Gen5detect is retailing at AUD994. I don't know why the massive price difference given Gen5detect is the newer model, but after watching many reviews including your own and taking into account the current prices, I think I will go with Gen5detect. Just purchased a Gen 5 detect. On special its price was $994. I managed to purchase it from David Jones who had it for $997, However if ordered in David Jones online store there was an extra $100 of. Coming in at $897. Amazing price. It is very powerful compared to my V11.
The other thing Dyson needs to do is to dial back their Boost setting to make it more usable. Virtually nobody uses it because it drains the life out of any battery.
Hi! V15 would be the best bet and I saw Costco started selling them at $550. If money isn't an issue and you are ok with a heavier vacuum, the V15 outsize is the ultimate version. Then The soft brush roll is a must for hardwood so it forces you to get the detect brushroll. Most V15 comes with the detect brush standard.
