Why the EU is still buying Russian energy? | DW News

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the European Union has radically reduced its imports of coal, oil and natural gas from Russia. In fact, the bloc's stated goal is to eliminate all Russian fossil fuel imports by 2027. But there is one glaring exception to this trend: Liquefied Natural Gas - or LNG, which the EU has been importing in record volumes from Russia. Video features report by DW’s Jack Parrock, as well as expert analysis from Carole Nakhle, CEO and founder of Crystol Energy, a consulting group.

Replacing Russian pipeline gas with Russian LNG. Thats a smart EU move.
@yp77738yp77739
@yp77738yp77739 7 месяцев назад
And paying much more for it, which genius thought that one up. The other nonsense is that they buy more Ukrainian piped gas too, again at an inflated price, and where does the Ukrainian gas come from, yep, Russia. Anyone might reasonably wonder whether the real intent of the sanctions was to screw the consumers, come to think of it, that’s the only possible rational explanation.
@gaborrajnai6213

No its not cheaper. Russian gas on pipelines generally have fixed price contracts, which is attached on the oil prices. Spot market works in the way, that an LNG tanker ship starts up from a Russian port, and its cargo is in bid while it moves, and it will travel to the port of the highest bidder, so its price is not fixed to anything.@@yp77738yp77739

Actually it is quite logical move, with LNG Russia have to compete with all other suppliers in world market, while on pipelines it has monopoly, so selling LNG reduces profits for Russia, also capacity is not the same, at the same time there isn't much point restricting purchase of Russian LNG as it can just easily be sold elsewhere.

We’ve had the CDU as a ruling party 3 years ago and they’ve been the main government for about 16 years in a row, give or take. In their legislation they’ve canceled nuclear power and slept on renewable energy to replace nuclear energy. Thus we are in the awkward situation now where we rely on coal, oil and gas to have a comfortable way of life. As of 2022 Germany has 47% of electricity from renewable sources and 17% „heating“ (energy in form of warmth) from renewable sources.

To the west is the US, which is the EU's superior. However, no matter how strong you are, if you have a habit of starting fires around yourself, the smoke will eventually go into your eyes. With some effort, it should be possible to reduce the use/consumption of methane gas enough to avoid any imports from Russia (both liquefied by ship and gas by pipeline), by the end of 2025. Find the report by searching for "EU can stop Russian gas imports by 2025" (by Ember, E3g, Bellona & RAP)
@NikolaiBeier
@NikolaiBeier 7 месяцев назад
According to the analysis by Bruegel, "The European Union is ready for the 2023-24 winter gas season", the EU imported methane from Russia amounting to about 485 TWh gross calorific value of energy, in the 12 month period from August 2022 to July 2023. (This amount is 1379 TWh less energy from Russia, than 3 years earlier, before the the disruptions of the gas supply started.) The energy from wind & solar power, the heat pumps and the nuclear power plants that are repaired since last winter, is estimated to save around 74 TWh this coming winter. (To that can be added the savings from changed habits, greater awareness on reducing wasted energy, etc.) Les and less of the activity in the EU countries depends on methane.

You can do all the analysis you want. But at the end of the day, you will find that you need cheap Russian oil and LNG for European factories to manufacture goods competitively. Long-term contracts for the import of Russian LNG - a strange excuse. If the EU gives a lot of money to support Ukraine, it can set aside a part for compensation in case of termination of the contracts.
@shamuratov
@shamuratov 7 месяцев назад
Have you hear what the CEO said?? Long-term contractors bough already all available LNG gas for years to come, there is no available (spot) gas to buy in short-term. It's not about compensation it's about having the gas which you really need if you don't want to freeze. And, buy the way, if your goal is to cut money to Russia you pay then the compensation and you leave them the gas that they can sell elsewhere so they get double money! what solution is that??

I'm from Russia. There are a lot of people here who are angry at the Europeans and are outraged that Russian energy is still coming to Europe. Putin does not completely close supplies and he and his government are criticized for this. Although I believe that if the price is high, then this business is right. If you don’t want to receive cheap and uninterrupted gas through a pipe, you pay more for liquefied gas.
