Thanks for the great video. I switched from a BMW R1200GS Adventure to the Africa Twin Adventure Sports after I moved to France-I had to sell the BMW in the U.S., and it had been a great bike, but after trying the Honda, I didn’t look back. The Honda AF is much cheaper. In initial cost and in servicing, and the engine is sublime. It has the grunt right where you want it, and the manual transmission is incredibly smooth. Once I spent a little time to figure out the rider modes, it was as if it had been custom built for me. I also prefer the firmer seat-it’s actually more comfortable on long trips than my old beloved BMW. While the Honda doesn’t have the raw power of the new R1250GSA, it’s not needed, or at least, I don’t miss it. The AF is plenty fast, but with excellent manners in town. Thanks again!
Enjoy the off roading in France. You can go pretty much anywhere as it is open range. Here in the London area we only have a few green lanes, you have to go to Scotland or Wales to find some tracks.
@@xontheweb2376 London is really urbanized zone... You have to visit my country - Bulgaria. You will be lost between so many tracks to get. Especially in the mountains... There is one man having a channel and showing a lot - Motorcycle Adventures. Have a look! Safe ride and Cheers!
The animated mouth fits so well. The AT definitely has a mean looking front end. Looks and sounds like a great bike. I am with you Robert, I am sticking with my T7.
I really like the way Honda is taking the more narrow path with the new Africa Twin. Great video and nice to hear more from the rest of the Nomad Show 👏🏻 Really love the b-roll inbetween... keep it up guys. Really enjoy the videos you make. 🇳🇴🔥🤣
Yes it's time we train these gods to be polished youtubers :) It's not easy as we all know but it's great to have the team in this. Yeah the b-roll turned out nicely with the little ZV-1 :)
This video fits in right time, cause I'm one week from my new Africa Twin CRF1100D4L fully loaded and also with DCT. New model of DCT is just amazing. I rode off road with new DCT and it felt just amazing. Plus on longer stretches, as I want to ride the whole TET Sweeden next year with this bike. Thank you.
Excellent review, I agree, Africa Twin is much wiser choice. I have the same, 2021 version but the DCT model. Get the Honda engine guard, crash guard and center stand and your bike will be complete.
My advice: better the good looks of the Honda be affected by crash bars than crashes changing the look of this nice and pricey machine. I crashed yesterday in a wet green lane in Southern England, crash bars did a nice job.
Now, only two hours before my final appointment at the Honda dealer, I could finally make my real world color decision between tricolor and black. Thank you chaps!
Good to hear Robert, that you'll keep the T7. Your channel is a true inspiration to me and why I've choosen the bike. I hope the Swedish winter is not too hard so that it prevents you from providing more valuable content.
I’ve had an ATAS 1100 Es and I’ve now got a T7 RE, the only thing I miss about the ATAS is the superb electronic suspension. The T7 is a better bike, its lighter and feels much lighter, the riding and standing position is much better, the screen is better (lots of turbulence and vibration on the ATAS), the engine is better and I don’t miss the extra 30bhp. The Yamaha quality and reliability is better than the honda. The honda is a pain in the @R$E to work on as well, whereas the Yamaha is easy. By the way, your T7 looks great with the new bash plate and decal kit👍🏻.
@@gregarnett6994 My friend is constantly trying to find a better seat solution on his ATAS. Still convinced it's a lot up to the riders expectations and tolerance.
For me, my '18 AT is the Unicorn. Could use more power and simpler air filter change but other than that its closest thing to perfection if you consider all things
Another Nomad here agrees with you. Now 13tkm behind and I'm happy with the bike. I went for Motortek Crashbars and pannier rack + Mosko Moto soft panniers. Negatives of AT for me is a bit high first gear + sensitive throttle opening, also I'll get a bit stiffer spring for the shock and maybe revalving if necessary.
Hey man, a lot of us watch this on our laptops with headphones. So please be mindful of the audio levels and keep it relatively close between speech and music. When the intro music kicked in, it almost took my eardrums with it since I already adjusted the volume to hear your intro. Thanks.
Hejsan! Better don't get the Honda "crash bars", they are rubbish! I made good experience with Outback Motortek ones, which you can also get only for the lower half of the bike. Also, Bumot and BB Offroad (better but expensive to import from Oz) make bash plates which cover the engine case, which is really the Achilles' heel of the Twin. :)
Did at improved front brakes in 2020 version? My '18 have front brakes like sponge and very weak bite. To engage abs you have to squeeze lever literally with whole hand, you can forget about one or two finger braking. Lack of braided brake lines is really felt and it destroys overall high quality feel
Great video! A little bit unfair to compare a super cheap Tènèrè with an expensive and exclusive Africa Twin though... 😉 But for the first time (in a youtube-video) you tell something important, putting something new under the looking glass - the fact the Africa Twin feels both smaller AND lighter than the T7! 😳 Especially for people like me (miniature people, with 28” in seam). I found it very surprising the fist time I had the T7 and AT1100 side by side, and rocked them sideways, that the AT felt lighter! 😮 On top of that, it doesn’t only have a lower seat but also a better ground clearance! 😀 That is most impressive when you take into consideration that the AT has a perimeter-frame, (with two tubes going under the engine). The reason for the high center of gravity and the slightly lower ground clearance of the Ténéré is of coarse the CP-2 engine, made for road bikes, with a big oil sump underneath, that costs ground clearance AND makes it necessary to put the engine high in the frame in an adventure bike. It is a very nice engine (except for the jerkyness at low trottling), and it was already available (wich made it cost effective), but it does have an intrinsically high center of gravity. 🤨 All in all, the price for the Ténéré is low, superbly low. It is simply “more bike for the money”. Not including this is unfair. You could have pushed that more (to defend the Ténéré). But yes - the AT is absolutely fantastic, if you can afford it, and if you don’t break the clutch cover... 😆 /Hugo
PS. The width differens between the T7 and the “normal” AT is much smaller. They are basically the same. If I’d known how to put pics in the comments (is it even possible?) I would have done it! 😉 The standard-AT is smaller than the Ténéré, but not narrower, just about the same. Much narrower than the wide “long distance-versions” that the guys bought.
PPS. You forgot to complain about the stupid and even dangerous change that Honda have done regarding placement of horn and signal for the left hand thumb. All modern Hondas are up side down! 😖 That really sucks, if you own more than one motorcycle. It is my number one reason for not buying a new Honda. Not finding the horn and/or signal when you need to do it instinctively and fast, is really bad!
Not really comparing anything but size. It would at least give those who tried the T7 an idea of the size. Thanks for the info on engine tech etc to explain the clearing. Interesting.
True. It was i size-comparison. And one the I’ve seen no-one else do! Therefor most people believes that AF is a much larger bike. You really cleared that up! I didn’t mean to say that you compared anything other than size, it’s more that I’m saying... that you could have! Like mentioned the price. The AT is very Pricey. The T7 is not. Only by comparing with BMW 1250 gs, the AT comes out as “nice price”! 😉 No matter - love your videos, always!
A nice review as you say a lot with simple words. And your smiles are telling even more than the words :)). Having 2018 ATAS DCT can't say it feels heavy on the go, but can imagine how better is 2020 Manual version with seriously reduced weight. I have HEED crash bars, which are really well done for their purpose. Not sure they released a mod for 2020 ATAS, but you can check if you're regularly off the road. Wider fuel tank is beneficial for the long trips as provides better protection against weather elements. Slower booting and complicated dash might be pain, but until you get use to. But who is watching that, once you enter the settings you need. Fun to ride is to enjoy, when you hit the road, not to steer on the dash. The old version is much more simple and quiet enough, even the settings. You might always add a TomTom navigation if you need more to see. Great new bikes! Enjoy a lot of milage on them! And stay safe on the road! Cheers and regards from Bulgaria!
Just discovered your channel and you have another subscriber from Australia! I'm a fellow adventure rider, my bike is a "Bush Pig". Love your humor, cheers mate, Glenn. 👍
It was really nice to have the side-by-side comparison between the Africa twin and the T-7. In my mind, before the comparison, the CRF1100 was much larger and heavier, but in reality the weight and size difference in very small.
Yes I was surprised too. The AT weight is still much higher. 238kg. (We had the wrong weight in the video). Also the T7 is soo much thinner. The AT adventure sports has a really wide tank.
lovely to see real riders picking their bikes based on their real needs, vs "professional" reviewers who push forward bikes based on paper stats. Personally, I would pick the v strom 1050, my riding is mostly asphalt and I do appreciate simplicity :)
Great to see the team again, where were Seymor? I have never ridden the AT but was surprised by how nimble it felt at the Gothenburg show. Keep it up dudes!
Thanks Matte! Seymor had other stuff this day but it’s nice when we can be full team. It’s also nice to see these two guys happy and satisfied at last 😊
Thanks for the review fellas 😀 I have the 2020 ATAS es and love it! I hope you get to try the electronic suspension one day. Can't believe the difference actually! Happy trails eh 🇨🇦 P.S. I have Norway envy! You guys have a trillion in the bank, we just broke a trillion in debt, lol!
Crash bars on the AT are not that bad in terms of aesthetics. Personal taste IMO. I like them. I can recommend HEED. Very good value for money. Great vid btw.
Have a deposit on a tenere 700 but every time I see the Africa twin I’m smitten. Like the idea of the tubeless tires and longer range. I see the real difference as thus: AT is geared toward cross country touring and tenere 700 to backcountry touring. Something to be said for the tenere’s simplicity. IDK which bike to buy... a tenere with a bigger tank and tubeless would make it a no brainer.
Been reading up on a tank flaking issue on the ATAS that causes fuel pump failures and loss of power. Anyone else familiar with this? Could be a reason to stick with T7
hello from Turkey :) thanks for the video it really helped me and I am about to buy Africa Twin but confused which one to choose between the DCT or manual. what was the reasons when Tony decide change from DCT to manual gear? thanks in advance.
Congratulations, the Africa Twin is a lovely looking bike. My very first bike was a Honda and I’ve had a soft spot for them ever since. Did you have many reliability issues with the KTM, or was it more the perception that it would be unreliable? I’ve just watched your Adriatic Adventure, fantastic trip.
I had some issues when I first got the ktm, 3 screws and gear-rod went missing in the first month. Also had some engine-start failures. But I guess thats all I had, like I said in the video, the ktm was a really fun bike, especially in the trails.
Hi guys, thanks for this video. Great stuff. I can see you have a garmin Zumo installed as well. Which fixture did you use to attach to the bar ? Thanks. Take care. All the best. Oli
Nice Bikes When the bikes are standing on the wheels and you are riding them you doesn’t feel the weight so much but they are rather top heavy. All-right but try to lay the bike flat on the ground then you understand why i always bring my portable MC Crane when i am alone off road i have a AT 2019 DCT and it suits me quite well 😉 the only real drawback are the fuel economy 18500 km last year 60 tanks 900l. that is rather thirsty❓
I own a 23 ATAS DCT wirh 2000 km on the glock and love it. Why does your exhaust sound so amazing? Did u Change anything? Does it get better after more km ?
T7 is the clear winner. 1. Simple dash and no ridiculous unneccessary electronics. 2. Great chassis and motor, low weight. 3. Most importantly, it says Yamaha on the tank, so you can put aftermarket Speedblock decals on it....
Not sure how you get a dry weight of 210kg and wet of 223kg! 24 litres of petrol weighs approx 18kg and Honda lists the basic model as 227kg dry. Great bike, the Africa Twin but it is not a light weight weapon. Good video, it is good to get some real-world perspective from owners.
I always thought the T7 was a lot smaller than the AT, but looking at them side by side they look the same size. Is the wider fuel tank of the AT the only real difference in size? Thank
Beautiful bikes, always eyeing them when I see them in the wild. What’s strikes me as strange is the point about the weight for switching from the Beamer to this. Isn’t this one heavier with 243kg? Every time I feel like swapping my 2011 1200gs is look add the weights of the competition and I decide to stick to my trusted cow.
Hi Jasper! The Weight is 223 wet on the AT sport. That is not so big difference but on the BMW you hits by the weight when you lean it immediately. But on the AT you don’t have that problem. Really an easy bike to handle.
@@NomadSweden I should try it out, just for the fun of it, for the health of my wallet I hope I won’t fall in love with it though..;) weight is a tricky subject, and your right about the subjective part of ‘weight’ in terms of how a bike handles and feels. When you have to pick it up or peoplehandle it around in the mud on the other hand, the real weight starts counting. Honda lists the bike as a 238kg kerb weight, which usually means not fully fueled, so you might want to check those numbers..
Nice bikes, but not a T7 😉 I imagine they are great for long drives on relative good roads, and decent enough for gravel and not to technical stuff. Great channel!
It's the man on the bike that matters, not the bike. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oqctqd5UPno.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EvqBhmqNdRg.html
@@haveaseatplease you’re absolutely right, hence the smiley 😉 Just like any other gear, it’s what you make of it that matters. And these bikes are all great for adventures 👍
Well, for technical stuff you get 250 ECX, not 200kg adv bike. You probably mean some rocks/ruts and wide enough single track. That's usually doable even on GS1200 as it's mostly driver's skill, not bike.
@@dexio85 I see that you didn't have a look at the linked vids. In the first one the AT is pretty much keeping up with six-day enduro machines. In the second vid, the AT won the open class of the KRKA enduro rally in Croatia.
Basically of all the videos I have watched on the Honda if you are going to spend a lot of time off road then dont get the DCT if most of your time is spent on tarmac then the DCT is the better option
Interesting. In my experience, KTM are lower quality than the Japanese or BMW. I've owned well over 40 motorcycles, including 5 new KTMs (Adv and Enduro), 4 had warranty problems including a jammed throttle that nearly killed me. I'd never buy another, let alone do a long, unsupported journey on one again. I've never had a warranty problem with a Japanese bike, or BMW. Actually, my KTM 950s lost it's water pump in Sweden. When choosing from these three market leaders, I'd say: mostly off road, simple, reliable: Tenere; 50/50 on/off road, some long journeys and road riding, easy to ride: Honda; mostly on road, fast, experienced off road: GS. The GS is very capable off road (and on), but maybe not for the inexperienced off road - it's heavy. and very expensive.
@@NomadSweden Well, you get through a lot of bikes, racing! But yes, just to agree with your choice and your friends'. KTM very fun and dynamically good, but they have not been reliable/dependable for me, nor some very experienced racers and travellers whose opinion I trust. Honda and Yamaha are so dependable and the Tenere is simple too, another important factor.
If I had the money I'd get an AT for the road and a WR 250 for the green stuff. I would hate to face the bill involved with dropping the Honda off road. Very enjoyable video. Well done.
The GS is heavier but carries the weight even heavier. The AT feels much more agile and balanced when riding. Didn't you feel the same when riding those two bikes?
@@NomadSweden point is all bikes over 200kg are heavy and during my testing GS felt more nimble while AT more stable at low speeds. For heavy bikes both are quite good off-road.
If u damage this display yours settings gone...... It's useless. I have off fuse abs and traction control most better drivable. Test u bike how to brake on off road with abs or complete off I mean fuse take out
*PLEASE replace those cheap plastic "hand guards" to a proper metal one, if you ever ride offroad.. thank me later when your hand levers dont break during a fall*
Strange that peoples like you who i think have made tons of videos, and still have a annoying "wind noise" in the film ?? don't you never heard about a "dead cat" to proteckt the microphone agains wind noice?
Same nobish bullshit "It is heavy, but you don't feel it" and after, we don't get the electronic suspension because it ads weight. And the KTM was bad despite the fact it is way lighter and much much more better suspended, not to mention the cog. And one of the two guys don't even know what he didn't like at his old bike. Ahahahaha priceless.
Hi there Mr ERUtheWIN. I think you have an KTM 🙂. If we have offended some KTM owner, we are sorry. I never sad that I not liked my BMW but I like may new AT better. Have a nice day
@@NomadSweden Unfortunately I do not own any ktm, mainly because I'm to short for them, but they are amazing bikes, best bike this days. Bmw fall behind ktm nowadays, and the Japanese are way in the dust. Also if I buy a ktm it will not be a 790 or another fat pig with adventure brand on it, but rather 690 and made what ktm didn't do Adventure variant, cause the other bikes are to heavy for real enduro.
